  • overloaded stream insertion operator with a vector

    hi, i'm trying to write an overloaded stream insertion operator for a class who's only member is a vector. i dont really know what i'm doing. (lets make that clear) it's a vector of "Points" which is a struct containing two doubles. i figure what i want is to insert user input (a bunch of doubles) into a stream that i then send to a modifier method? i keep working off other stream insertion examples such as... std::ostream& operator<< (std::ostream& o, Fred const& fred) { return o << fred.i_; } but when i try a similar..... istream & operator >> (istream &inStream, Polygon &vertStr) { inStream >> ws; inStream >> vertStr.vertices; return inStream; } i get an error "no match for operator etc etc. if i leave off the .vertices it compiles but i figure it's not right?   • XmlSerializer equivalent of IExtensibleDataObject

    With DataContracts you can derive from IExtensibleDataObject to allow round-tripping to work without losing any unknown additional data from your XML file. I can't use DataContract because I need to control the formatting of the output XML. But I also need to be able to read a future version of the XML file in the old version of the app, without losing any of the data from the XML file. e.g. XML v1: <Person> <Name>Fred</Name> </Person> XML v2: <Person> <Name>Fred</Name> <Age>42</Age> </Person> If reading an XML v2 file from v1 of my app, deserializing and serializing it again turns it into an XML v1 file. i.e. the "Age" field is erased. Is there anything similar to IExtensibleDataObject that I can use with XmlSerializer to avoid the Age field disappearing?

  • In Java, howd do I iterate through lines in a textfile from back to front

    Basically I need to take a text file such as : Fred Bernie Henry and be able to read them from the file in the order of Henry Bernie Fred The actual file I'm reading from is 30MB and it would be a less than perfect solution to read the whole file, split it into an array, reverse the array and then go from there. It takes way too long. My specific goal is to find the first occurrence of a string (in this case it's "InitGame") and then return the position beginning of the beginning of that line. I did something like this in python before. My method was to seek to the end of the file - 1024, then read lines until I get to the end, then seek another 1024 from my previous starting point and, by using tell(), I would stop when I got to the previous starting point. So I would read those blocks backwards from the end of the file until I found the text I was looking for. So far, I'm having a heck of a time doing this in Java. Any help would be greatly appreciated and if you live near Baltimore it may even end up with you getting some fresh baked cookies. Thanks!

Right now the script currently: Saves Id, Name, Url with a "|" delimiter to a text file Db like: 1|John|http://www.john.com| 2|Mark|http://www.mark.com| 3|Fred|http://www.fred.com| But I'm having a hard time trying to make the "UPDATE" and "DELETE" buttons work.   • Postfix SMTP auth not working with virtual mailboxes + SASL + Courier userdb

    So I've read a variety of tutorials and how-to's and I'm struggling to make sense of how to get SMTP auth working with virtual mailboxes in Postfix. I used this Ubuntu tutorial to get set up. I'm using Courier-IMAP and POP3 for reading mail which seems to be working without issue. However, the credentials used to read a mailbox are not working for SMTP. I can see from /var/log/auth.log that PAM is being used, does this require a UNIX user account to work? I updated /etc/default/saslauthd to start saslauthd correctly (this page was useful) MECHANISMS="rimap" MECH_OPTIONS="localhost" THREADS=0 OPTIONS="-c -m /var/spool/postfix/var/run/saslauthd -r" After doing this I got the following error in /var/log/auth.log: li305-246 saslauthd[28093]: auth_rimap: unexpected response to auth request: * BYE [ALERT] Fatal error: Account's mailbox directory is not owned by the correct uid or gid: li305-246 saslauthd[28093]: do_auth : auth failure: [user=fred] [service=smtp] [realm=] [mech=rimap] [reason=[ALERT] Unexpected response from remote authentication server] This blog post detailed a solution by setting IMAP_MAILBOX_SANITY_CHECK=0 in /etc/courier/imapd. Then restart your courier and saslauthd daemons for config changes to take effect. sudo /etc/init.d/courier-imap restart sudo /etc/init.d/courier-authdaemon restart sudo /etc/init.d/saslauthd restart Watch /var/log/auth.log while trying to send email. Hopefully you're good!

  • Scala factory pattern returns unusable abstract type

    Please let me know how to make the following bit of code work as intended. The problem is that the Scala compiler doesn't understand that my factory is returning a concrete class, so my object can't be used later. Can TypeTags or type parameters help? Or do I need to refactor the code some other way?     Sure, object-oriented techniques are great and have stuck around for a while. I know only less than a handful of critics of the OO principles. It seems as though most non-OO designs and architectures are shunned, yet we continue to write a lot of good software in C and solve a lot of data changes via awk/sed and countless other examples. Correct tool for the correct job, yes? I'm having a hard time finding articles, presentations, or published criticisms of OO (even Fred Brooks has blessed information hiding). Are there any well-known, published and/or outspoken critics of OO?

    I want to transfer video from a VHS tape to my computer with Arch Linux, using a USB capture device that comes with Roxio Easy VHS to DVD, which I recently bought. I tried to plug in the device, and it was properly recognized.   • Build one to throw away vs Second-system effect

    One one hand there is an advice that says "Build one to throw away". Only after finishing a software system and seeing the end product we realize what went wrong in the design phase and understand how we should have really done it. On the other hand there is the "second-system effect" which says that the second system of the same kind that is designed is usually worse than the first one; there are many features that did not fit in the first project and were pushed into the second version usually leading to overly complex and overly engineered. Isn't here some contradiction between these principles? What is the correct view over the problems and where is the border between these two? I believe that these "good practices" are were firstly promoted in the seminal book The Mythical Man-Month by Fred Brooks. I know that some of these issues are solved by Agile methodologies, but deep down, the problem is still the principles still stand; for example we would not make important design changes 3 sprints before going live.

  • Software for capturing still image snapshots from video input

    What software is available that will let me watch video from a USB video capture device at full PAL/NTSC resolution and capture a still image at a button press? More info: I'm using a KaiserBaas USB capture device (http://www.kaiserbaas.com/kaiser-baas-product-page/converters/video-to-dvd-maker), and want to capture screen shots from a PS2 connected to it. I'd like to play the game at the full PS2 resolution and capture certain scenes. The device has a one-touch snapshot button on it, but I can't seem to make it work and there's no mention of it anywhere in the documentation. The device works and the video appears in Power Producer (the included software), but I think it previews it smaller than the full resolution. I could print screen it, but having to crop will be a pain.

  • C++ visibility of privately inherited typedefs to nested classes

    First time on StackOverflow, so please be tolerant. In the following example (apologies for the length) I have tried to isolate some unexpected behaviour I've encountered when using nested classes within a class that privately inherits from another. I've often seen statements to the effect that there is nothing special about a nested class compared to an unnested class, but in this example one can see that a nested class (at least according to GCC 4.4) can see the public typedefs of a class that is privately inherited by the closing class. I appreciate that typdefs are not the same as member data, but I found this behaviour surprising, and I imagine many others would, too. So my question is threefold: Is this standard behaviour?
