Update: We have to physical servers and want to build reliably solution using cluster approach. We need to clustering our application and DB (MS SQL). • How to resolve virtual disk degraded in Windows Server 2012

  I am using the new Storage Spaces feature in Windows Server 2012. I have the following disks: FriendlyName CanPool OperationalStatus HealthStatus Usage Size ------------ ------- ----------------- ------------ ----- ---- PhysicalDisk2 False OK Healthy Auto-Select 2.73 TB PhysicalDisk3 False OK Healthy Auto-Select 2.73 TB PhysicalDisk4 False OK Healthy Auto-Select 2.73 TB PhysicalDisk5 False OK Healthy Auto-Select 2.73 TB There is also a separate OS disk. The above disks are part of a single storage pool: FriendlyName OperationalStatus HealthStatus IsPrimordial IsReadOnly ------------ ----------------- ------------ ------------ ---------- Pool OK Healthy False False Within this storage pool some virtual disks are defined, see below: FriendlyName ResiliencySettingNa OperationalStatus HealthStatus IsManualAttach Size me ------------ ------------------- ----------------- ------------ -------------- ---- Docs Mirror OK Healthy False 500 GB Data Mirror Degraded Warning False 500 GB Work Mirror Degraded Warning False 2 TB Now the virtual disks are all running normal 2-way mirror, but two of the virtual disks are degraded. This is probably because one of the physical disks was offline for a short period of time. However, now the virtual disk cannot be repaired, even though, all physical disks are healthy. There is plenty of available space in the storage pool. This I cannot understand so I was hoping for some help, on how to resolve this? • Best Practice - SQL 2012 & IIS in VMWare

  We are pretty new to VMWare and looking for some thoughts on our environment. We have a VMWare cluster that has on one host: VM#1: MS Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise & SQL Server 2012 VM#2: MS Windows 2008 R2 Standard & IIS The IIS asp.net app talks directly to the SQL Server. We had this similar environment on physical servers a few months ago and just recently moved to the virtualized environment. Regarding the setup, we have not tweaked any of the vm resource parameters -- all is set as standard and all is working. What is observed is that the VMs seem to spool down and we get lags in response. Of course this sin't as fast as the old physical environment, but I am wondering if: *is it a good idea to run the SQL server and the IIS server on the same host? They are the only two VMs on it. The host is a new Dell R620 with 192 gb mem. does it make sense to change any CPU or memory reservations when it doesn't seem like there is any contention is there a way to keep the VMs spooled up to eliminate delays? This is a brand new squeaky clean vanilla install. What are your thoughts?

• Windows Server 2012 licensing issue preventing RDP connections?

  I am witnessing an unusual behaviour on 1 of 5 Windows Server 2012 R2 machines (clean install) that is preventing any remote connections from being established via RDP. I have run through the prerequisites for RDP here but I am finding that any remote connection attempt instantly stops the "Windows Protection Service". When I check the event logs I see the following entry. The Software Protection Service has stopped Event ID: 903 Source: Security-SPP From what I have read Security-SPP is tasked with enforcing activation and licensing, it appears that RDP requires this service to be in the running state. Is it possible that I have inadvertently activated this instance of Windows with a key that has already been associated to another instance (We have 5 keys as part of an MSDN subscription)? Would this be sufficient to block RDP access? When I look under System Properties (Windows Activation) it states that Windows is activated and there are no other obvious indicators that there's a licensing issue. EDIT 1: I ran a Powershell script to display the product keys for all servers in order to check for any duplication. For the problematic server I am getting the message The RPC server is unavailable.

• DNS manager in Windows Server 2012 Essentials - My one server appears twice

  I have a newly installed Windows Server 2012 Essentials. It works pretty good although I'm working on some DNS improvements. Something that seems a little weird is in DNS Manager, my server appears twice. Once as hostname and once as hostname.mydomain.local. They seem to be identical and locked in sync. If I change one, the other follows. Is this normal? Does anyone know why I have this? I'm talking about the top level on the navigation. The very top is DNS and then these two below. Zones, forwarders etc are below them. I've found a couple of forum posts of people asking the same thing but no useful answer. All tutorials etc I can find with screenshots show only one which makes me uncomfortable. The server was installed out of the box as standard with the wizards. I know about the recommendation not to use .local but the wizards didn't give me any other option.

• Three monitor setup not working on Server 2012

  Using an ATI firepro 4800 card, with three monitors connected (1 dvi, 2 displayport) on Server 2008 R2 worked fine. Ive now moved to a new machine, although identical spec, with a fresh Server 2012 install, and cannot get a three display output - only two. When I try to extend the display on to the third monitor, I get the message "The display settings could not be saved. Please try a different combination of display settings" The machine is a Dell Precision T1600. Any help appreciated.

• How does SSMS and SQL Server Licensing work?

  Could not get a efficient enough answer from MSFT or some of their vendors. Trying to determine exactly how the licensing works before dropping the money on it. Looking to get Server/CAL. We will have the server at our datacenter and then be using SSMS remote on each developers computer. That is, installing SSMS on all developers machine. I am not familiar with MSFT licensing (postgresql & mysql). If I were to pay for the server license and 5 CALs does that mean we can install SSMS locally on each machine. Does each CAL have a specific lic. # that is entered when installing SSMS? We were messing with just the trial edition and the only way I know of installing SSMS is using the full sql server install and choosing only SSMS, it still requires a license number. Any information would be very useful.

I've tried both i386 and amd64; with and without APIC enabled; with and without processor features disabled in Hyper-V. Is it necessary to use the procedure in the Handbook for Xen domU? Does anyone has experience with this configuration?

  I set up a Active Directory on a server machine with Windows Server 2012 and I'd like to create some users with limitations like Windows Steady State does in Windows XP (locally). Seen already the Windows SteadyState Handbook (with Windows Server 2008), but I'd like to know if anyone has tried this before, the limitations are the following: 1. Prevent locked or roaming user profiles that cannot be found on the computer from logging on 2. Do not cache copies of locked or roaming user profiles for users who have previously logged on to this computer 3. Do not allow Windows to compute and store passwords using LAN Manager Hash values 4. Do not store usernames or passwords used to log on to the Windows Live ID or the domain 5. Prevent users from creating folders and files on drive C:\ 6. Lock profile to prevent the user from making permanent changes 7. Remove the Control Panel, Printer and Network Settings from the Classic Start menu 8. Remove the Favorites icon 9. • WSUS is not using Akamai CDN for syncronisation source

  I've just installed a WSUS onto our network, and I'm currently doing the initial sync. I've found that WSUS does not seem to be talking to an Akamai cache, but rather with MS directly. This is contrary to what I've always thought regarding Windows Update traffic. Tcpdump of our WSUS server doing initial sync... As you can see it's speaking with 65.55.194.221. For me to speak to this IP, I have to go over international transit links. And how can I change that (if possible)? I know that I can manually specify a WSUS source to sync with instead of pick the default MS Update like I currently have... But it seems like I shouldn't have to do this. NOTE: I've haven't confirmed if a WUA speaks with Akamai, just looking at WSUS as all WUAs will use our internal WSUS from now on. We'll be looking to join an IX shortly with the hopes of peering with an Akamai cache and have very fast access to Windows Updates. Before I let this drive my motivations for an IX at all I want to first confirm it's actually possible for WSUS to speak with an Akamai cache. I know this is somewhat networking related, but I feel like it has more to do with WSUS than anything, so someone who knows WSUS better than me will likely be able to figure this out.

• What would happen if I did a "Boot to VHD" to a VHD that was configured to run under Hyper-V?

  Microsoft has a Hyper-V based VM I'm interested in running, however, I don't have access to a Windows Server 2008 machine to try it on, only a Windows 7 Pro x64 machine (Windows 7 does not support Hyper-V). But instead of those routes, I'm wondering: What would happen if I tried to go the "Boot to VHD" route using this Hyper-V VHD? Is it possible that during the boot process, Windows would simply notice that hardware had changed and adjust accordingly, installing the appropriate drivers and continuing on without a hitch?

• Is it possible to upgrade using the Windows Server 2012 evaluation?

  I've got a Windows Server 2008 Standard installation here that I'm trying to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 Server, using the evaluation version. (The scenario is essentially that I need to test the upgrade, and specifically the upgrade process, before we spend the money on going ahead with the actual upgrade.) When I try to upgrade, it fails with the message: "Windows Server 2008 Standard cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 Standard Evaluation (Server with a GUI). You can choose to install a new... (etc., etc.)" Is this (non-upgradability) a known limitation of the evaluation version? (Unfortunately, I haven't found a clear answer on this point.) And if not, any thoughts on where else I might look for the problem and solutions to it?

• HyperV management through Windows 8

  Consider the following setup: 1 Hypervisor 3 Clients (Server 2012 with AD, Server 2012, Windows 8). Now we can remote desktop into the Hypervisor and manage the VMs with the manager. This also works from the Server 2012 (I installed the manager there). But it doesn't work from the Windows 8 machine. All machines are in the same domain. Am I forgetting something? I followed this long page http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc794756(v=ws.10).aspx But I find it so weird that it works for the same user on Windows Server 2012, but not on Windows 8.

• Cannot get SCVMM Admin Console to Connect to Hyper-V Server 2008 R2

  I cannot get SCVMM Admin console to connect to Hyper-V Server 2008. I have changed all firewall settings on the server to allow for a connection, I have even tried turning the firewall off completely. I am getting this error message: Unable to connect to the Virtual Machine Manager server xx.xxx.xxx.xx. the Virtual Machine Manager service on that servier did not respond. Verify that Virtual Machine Manager has been installed on the server and that the Virtual Machine Manager service is running. Then try to connect again. If the problem persists, restart the Virtual Machine Manager Service. ID: 1602 I have tried restarting the VMMS service, and that did not work. I have posted a similar question to this before, and was told to make sure to intall the Hyper-V agent on the Hyper-V server. I was told that SCVMM can push the agent out to the server. However, if I cannot connect to the server, how can I use SCVMM to push out the agent? Thanks for any help.
