  • Windows Server 2012 R2 application installation slowness

    - by Eric
Good afternoon, Windows Server 2012 R2 as host fully up to date Windows Server 2012 R2 as guest fully up to date Whether I am running it as a host or guest, whenever I am installing an application that should take a couple minutes it always ends up 3x-5x longer than it should. If I take the same applications and install it on any other OS (IE 2k8, 7,) it they install very quickly. Dell server management software took 30 minutes or so when it takes 5 minutes or so on 2k8. Even a clean install not joined to domain I still experience this same slowness on applications I attempt to install. So my question to everyone is, are you or anyone else experiencing this? I cannot find anything on google so this is why I am here

  • Change Windows Server 2012 color scheme without Desktop Experience feature

    - by Fez Vrasta
I have a Windows Server 2012, blue is nice... but I'd prefer a less "eyes puncher" color, maybe gray or black... I'm a GNU/Linux sysadmin and just the fact of have the entire GUI on a server is difficult for me, so I would avoid to install the Desktop Experience feature just to change the color of the GUI. I have read here: How to change color scheme in Windows Server 2012 That once I've changed color I may remove the Desktop Experience feature and the color will not be reverted to the original. So I guess there must be a way to change the color without install this feature pack, because looks like it just adds the control panel to set the color, but not the core feature, that maybe could be accessible within some registry key. Does someone have some idea?

  • Adding a Windows Server 2012 Essentials server to an existing domain, without migrating the AD

    - by TiernanO
I have an existing Active Directory in house, a mix between a Win2K8R2 and Win2K3 domain, and i would like to test out Windows Server 2012 Essentials BETA on the network. When walking though the install, it gives me the option of a new domain, or migrating from an existing domain. when clicking existing, it tells me i can only have one SBS server running on a domain at a time... So, i dont have any existing SBS servers in house (both are full standard or enterprise editions) but i do plan on keeping at least one of these extra servers running... So, how do i get a 2012 Essentials server to join a domain, and not migrate the existing domain? or if i do migrate, can i still get one of the other boxes to act as secondary controllers?

  • SQL Server 2012 LocalDB

    - by user3061846
I´m a noobie so please be patient ! I developed an app using C# and SQL Server Express 2012 with a local database, my connection string is"Data Source=localhost ; Initial Catalog = scalnet ; Integrated Security=SSPI; Trusted_Connection=Yes"; Everything worked ok till the time I made a setup and tried to install my app in another computer. My first question is: - What version of SQL should I install is this machine? it should be as ligth as possible. - I tried to install SQL exprees 2012 but it gives me an error when I execute my app "A network related or instance specific error occurred while establishing a ..... (provider:Named Pipes Provider, error:40 - Could not open a connection to SQL server." This probably should be a problem with the server configuration but I have no ideia how to solve this... Can anyone point me to the rigth direction ? ? Thanks

  • Dell VRTX - slow cluster shared storage

    - by NorbyTheGeek
I have a brand new Dell VRTX box set up as a Failover Cluster running HA Hyper-V virtual machines. This is my first time setting up clustering, and my first time with one of these boxes, so I'm sure I've missed something. The virtual machines are experiencing high disk latency and bad performance when accessing their VHD(x) files located on a Cluster Shared Volume. The VRTX has 10 x 900 GB 10K SAS drives in RAID 6 configuration, and the VRTX has the redundant Shared PERC 8 controllers. Both blades have full access to the virtual disks. There are two M520 blades installed, each with 128 GB RAM. MPIO is configured for the PERC 8 controllers. Operating system on the blades is Server 2012 (NOT R2). The RAID 6 array is split into a small (8 GB) volume for cluster quorum witness and a large (6.5 TB) volume for a Cluster Shared Volume (mounted on the nodes as C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1) An example of slow disk access: logging into a Server 2012 VM and having Server Manager come up automatically. Disk access goes to 100%, with write speeds at 20 MB or so, read speeds of 500 KB or so, and Average Response Time of over 1000 ms, sometimes spiking at 4000-5000 ms or so. It's the latency that really worries me. Is there something specific I should look at in my configuration? It doesn't seem to matter whether I use VHD or VHDX, dynamic or static.

  • SQL SERVER – Get Free Books on While Learning SQL Server 2012 Error Handling

    - by pinaldave
Fans of this blog are aware that I have recently released my new books SQL Server Functions and SQL Server 2012 Queries. The books are available in market in limited edition but you can avail them for free on Wednesday Nov 14, 2012. Not only they are free but you can additionally learn SQL Server 2012 Error Handling as well. My book’s co-author Rick Morelan is presenting a webinar tomorrow on SQL Server 2012 Error Handling. Here is the brief abstract of the webinar: People are often shocked when they see the demo in this talk where the first statement fails and all other statements still commit. For example, did you know that BEGIN TRAN…COMMIT TRAN is not enough to make everything work together? These mistakes can still happen to you in SQL Server 2012 if you are not aware of the options. Rick Morelan, creator of Joes2Pros, will teach you how to predict the Error Action and control it with & without structured error handling. Register for the webinar now to learn: How to predict the Error Action and control it Nuances between successful and failing SQL statements Essential SQL Server 2012 configuration options Register for the Webinar and be present during the webinar. My co-author will announce a winner (may be more than 1 winner) during the session. If you are present during the session – you are eligible to win the book. The webinar is scheduled for 2 different times to accommodate various time zones. 1) 10am ET/7am PT 2) 1pm ET/11am PT. Each webinar will have their own winner. • Windows Server 2012 Can't Print

    - by Chris
I know this may sound incredibly stupid and there is probably an easy solution but I can't seem to find it. Friends of mine recently upgraded their server for their small business from the POS old one. New hardware and a change from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012. I've got everything they need transfered over and running except for printing. They need to be able to print to printers in the vans their technicians use from the server via remote desktop. In other words the use a laptop to remote desktop into the server and need to print invoices out from the remote server to printers attached locally via usb. On the old server they just installed the identical driver and that was it, they could print as needed. On this server no matter what we seem to do we can't get it to print remotely, and in the process we also discovered that the server can't even print to the network printer. It sees the printer on it's network and it sees (through redirect) the printers in the vans but when you hit print it claims it did and nothing happens. There isn't an issue with the printers themselves as every other device we have can print to them without issues. Is there some setting that is inhibiting the server from printing? Is there something I need to install (print server?) to add the functionality? Thanks in advance for helping me out here

  • How should I set up my Hyper-V server and network topology?

    - by Daniel Waechter
This is my first time setting up either Hyper-V or Windows 2008, so please bear with me. I am setting up a pretty decent server running Windows Server 2008 R2 to be a remote (colocated) Hyper-V host. It will be hosting Linux and Windows VMs, initially for developers to use but eventually also to do some web hosting and other tasks. Currently I have two VMs, one Windows and one Ubuntu Linux, running pretty well, and I plan to clone them for future use. Right now I'm considering the best ways to configure developer and administrator access to the server once it is moved into the colocation facility, and I'm seeking advice on that. My thought is to set up a VPN for access to certain features of the VMs on the server, but I have a few different options for going about this: Connect the server to an existing hardware firewall (an old-ish Netscreen 5-GT) that can create a VPN and map external IPs to the VMs, which will have their own IPs exposed through the virtual interface. One problem with this choice is that I'm the only one trained on the Netscreen, and its interface is a bit baroque, so others may have difficulty maintaining it. Advantage is that I already know how to do it, and I know it will do what I need. Connect the server directly to the network and configure the Windows 2008 firewall to restrict access to the VMs and set up a VPN. I haven't done this before, so it will have a learning curve, but I'm willing to learn if this option is better long-term than the Netscreen. Another advantage is that I won't have to train anyone on the Netscreen interface. Still, I'm not certain if the capabilities of the Windows software firewall as far as creating VPNs, setting up rules for external access to certain ports on the IPs of Hyper-V servers, etc. Will it be sufficient for my needs and easy enough to set up / maintain? Anything else? What are the limitations of my approaches? What are the best practices / what has worked well for you? Remember that I need to set up developer access as well as consumer access to some services. Is a VPN even the right choice?

  • VMRC equivalent for Hyper-V?

    - by Ian Boyd
VMRC was the client tool used to connect to virtual machines running on Virtual Server. Upgrading to Windows Server 2008 R2 with the Hyper-V role, i need a way for people to be able to use the virtual machines. Note: not all virtual machines will have network connectivity not all virtual machines will be running Windows some people needing to connect to a virtual machine will be running Windows XP Hyper-V manager, allowing management of the hyper-v server, is less desirable (since it allows management of the hyper-v server (and doesn't work on all operating systems)) What is the Windows Server 2008 R2 equivalent of VMRC; to "vnc" to a virtual server? Update: i think Tatas was suggesting Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager Self-Service Portal 2.0 (?): Which requires SQL Server IIS Installing those would unfortunately violate our Windows Server 2008 R2 license. i might be looking at the wrong product link, since commenter said there is a version that doesn't require "System Center". Update 2: The Windows Server 2008 R2 running HyperV is being licensed with the understanding that it only be used to host HyperV. From the [Windows Server 2008 R2 Licensing FAQ][4]: Q. If I have one license for Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard and want to run it in a virtual operating system environment, can I continue running it in the physical operating system environment? A. Yes, with Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, you may run one instance in the physical operating system environment and one instance in the virtual operating system environment; however, the instance running in the physical operating system environment may be used only to run hardware virtualization software, provide hardware virtualization services, or to run software to manage and service operating system environments on the licensed server. This is why i'm weary about installing IIS or SQL Server.

  • Setting up Group Managed Service Account on Windows Server 2012 R2

    - by Moo MinTroll
I have a Windows 2012 R2 domain controller called cox.win.testlab. I have set up a group of hosts where I would like to use a gMSA (Group Managed Service Account). This group is called SQLManagedHosts. I created the account by following these steps in Powershell on the domain controller: PS C:\Windows\system32> Add-KdsRootKey -EffectiveTime ((get-date).addhours(-10)) Guid ---- 9b68b1e7-db76-c4e4-4978-63c2965e5596 PS C:\Windows\system32> New-ADServiceAccount mSQL -DNSHostName cox.win.testlab -PrincipalsAllowedToRetrieveManagedPassword SQLManagedHosts PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-ADServiceAccount msql DistinguishedName : CN=mSQL,CN=Managed Service Accounts,DC=win,DC=testlab Enabled : True Name : mSQL ObjectClass : msDS-GroupManagedServiceAccount ObjectGUID : cf9df74a-38e0-4d7a-856e-9af882b08800 SamAccountName : mSQL$ SID : S-1-5-21-3443997112-87545443-1733229669-1602 UserPrincipalName : On one of the hosts listed in SQLManagedHosts, I ran: PS C:\Windows\system32> Install-ADServiceAccount msql Install-ADServiceAccount : Cannot install service account. • Other roles on Hyper-V Server

    - by Puneet Arora
Microsoft offers the standalone Hyper-V server for free. I'm wondering if I can install roles other than the Hyper-V role on this? I know installing other roles alongside Hyper-V is a bad practice, but what I'm trying to ask is if the Hyper-V Server edition of Windows Server allows installation of other roles, like DNS server, File Server etc. Infact I'm not interested in running Hyper-V, just looking for a free windows server to install some roles on. Thanks

  • SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2 Cumulative Update #1 is available!

    - by AaronBertrand
The SQL Server team has released SQL Server 2012 SP2 Cumulative Update #1. This cumulative updates Service Pack 2 to include the fixes from SP1 CU#10 and a few from CU#11, including the fix for the online index rebuild corruption issue I discussed recently on SQLPerformance.com . It also marks the first time in the SQL Server 2012 timeframe that both cumulative update branches are on roughly the same schedule, which makes many of us happy I'm sure. :-) KB Article: KB #2976982 Build # is 11.0.5532...(read more)

  • Migration of VM from Hyper-V to Hyper-V R2 - Pass through disks

    - by Andrew Gillen
I am trying to migrate a VM which is using two pass through disks from a legacy Hyper-V Cluster to a new R2 cluster. The migrated VM cannot use the pass through disks though. The guest OS (2008 R2) doesn't seem to like the disk and eventually tries to format the disk instead of mounting it. The migration process I have been using for all my VMs is to export the VM to a new lun, then add that new lun to the new cluster, importing the vm off it in the hyper-v console, then making it highly available. I assumed I could do the same thing and just add the two pass through disks to the new cluster and then attach them inside Hyper-V. Is there a process I need to follow to migrate pass through disks that does not involve setting up new Luns and robocopying the data over?

  • Installation of Active Directory on separate VM from DNS does not entierly work - not sure why

    - by René Kåbis
Not sure what I am doing wrong here. I have a moderately midrange server (16 cores, 2Ghz, 32GB ECC REG RAM, 6TB storage, nothing too extreme) where I am running Hyper-V (Server 2012 R2 Enterprise) in order to provision virtual machines. So why an AD separate from DNS? I want redundancy. I want to be able to move VMs and back them up individually and not have too many services on any one VM. I have already provisioned a VM with DNS, and have set it up right -- essentially, I have: Set up Static IP’s for everyone involved. Installed the DNS service on the DNS VM. Created a forward lookup zone and a reverse lookup zone (primary zone) xyz.ca Configured the zones to use nonsecure and secure dynamic updates (i will change this to secure later after the domain controller is online). Created a A record for the DC in the forward lookup zone (and a reverse ptr) Changed DC’s DNS server (network settings) to the new DNS server. Checked that I can ping the dns server from the new DC by hostname. When I went ahead and did a DCpromo on the DC, and un-cheked the “install DNS” option, everything seemed to go well (no error messages), but I saw no changes on the DNS server whatsoever (no additional settings). Plus, the DNS server seems to be unable to join the domain, as it claims that the domain is not discoverable. As a final note, I do run Symantec Endpoint Protection, which includes a firewall and most settings set as default. I have not yet tried turning this off, but my experience has been that if a service would open up a port on a Windows firewall, it would do the same through Symantec. There is pretty tight integration these days with corporate-class AV and Windows. I have a template vhdx fully set up (just short of any special roles and features) that I can use to replace the current AD VM with, so doing this all over again is not too much skin off of my nose.

  • SQL Server and Hyper-V Dynamic Memory Part 3

    - by SQLOS Team
In parts 1 and 2 of this series we looked at the basics of Hyper-V Dynamic Memory and SQL Server memory management. In this part Serdar looks at configuration guidelines for SQL Server memory management. Part 3: Configuration Guidelines for Hyper-V Dynamic Memory and SQL Server Now that we understand SQL Server Memory Management and Hyper-V Dynamic Memory basics, let’s take a look at general configuration guidelines in order to utilize benefits of Hyper-V Dynamic Memory in your SQL Server VMs. Requirements Host Operating System Requirements Hyper-V Dynamic Memory feature is introduced with Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. Therefore in order to use Dynamic Memory for your virtual machines, you need to have Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 or Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1 in your Hyper-V host. Guest Operating System Requirements In addition to this Dynamic Memory is only supported in Standard, Web, Enterprise and Datacenter editions of windows running inside VMs. Make sure that your VM is running one of these editions. For additional requirements on each operating system see “Dynamic Memory Configuration Guidelines” here. SQL Server Requirements All versions of SQL Server support Hyper-V Dynamic Memory. However, only certain editions of SQL Server are aware of dynamically changing system memory. To have a truly dynamic environment for your SQL Server VMs make sure that you are running one of the SQL Server editions listed below: ·         SQL Server 2005 Enterprise ·         SQL Server 2008 Enterprise / Datacenter Editions ·         SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise / Datacenter Editions Configuration guidelines for other versions of SQL Server are covered below in the FAQ section. Guidelines for configuring Dynamic Memory Parameters Here is how to configure Dynamic Memory for your SQL VMs in a nutshell: Hyper-V Dynamic Memory Parameter Recommendation Startup RAM 1 GB + SQL Min Server Memory Maximum RAM > SQL Max Server Memory Memory Buffer % 5 Memory Weight Based on performance needs   Startup RAM In order to ensure that your SQL Server VMs can start correctly, ensure that Startup RAM is higher than configured SQL Min Server Memory for your VMs. Otherwise SQL Server service will need to do paging in order to start since it will not be able to see enough memory during startup. Also note that Startup Memory will always be reserved for your VMs. This will guarantee a certain level of performance for your SQL Servers, however setting this too high will limit the consolidation benefits you’ll get out of your virtualization environment. Maximum RAM This one is obvious. If you’ve configured SQL Max Server Memory for your SQL Server, make sure that Dynamic Memory Maximum RAM configuration is higher than this value. Otherwise your SQL Server will not grow to memory values higher than the value configured for Dynamic Memory. Memory Buffer % Memory buffer configuration is used to provision file cache to virtual machines in order to improve performance. Due to the fact that SQL Server is managing its own buffer pool, Memory Buffer setting should be configured to the lowest value possible, 5%. Configuring a higher memory buffer will prevent low resource notifications from Windows Memory Manager and it will prevent reclaiming memory from SQL Server VMs. Memory Weight Memory weight configuration defines the importance of memory to a VM. Configure higher values for the VMs that have higher performance requirements. VMs with higher memory weight will have more memory under high memory pressure conditions on your host. Questions and Answers Q1 – Which SQL Server memory model is best for Dynamic Memory? The best SQL Server model for Dynamic Memory is “Locked Page Memory Model”. This memory model ensures that SQL Server memory is never paged out and it’s also adaptive to dynamically changing memory in the system. This will be extremely useful when Dynamic Memory is attempting to remove memory from SQL Server VMs ensuring no SQL Server memory is paged out. You can find instructions on configuring “Locked Page Memory Model” for your SQL Servers here. Q2 – What about other SQL Server Editions, how should I configure Dynamic Memory for them? Other editions of SQL Server do not adapt to dynamically changing environments. They will determine how much memory they should allocate during startup and don’t change this value afterwards. Therefore make sure that you configure a higher startup memory for your VM because that will be all the memory that SQL Server utilize Tune Maximum Memory and Memory Buffer based on the other workloads running on the system. If there are no other workloads consider using Static Memory for these editions. Q3 – What if I have multiple SQL Server instances in a VM? Having multiple SQL Server instances in a VM is not a general recommendation for predictable performance, manageability and isolation. In order to achieve a predictable behavior make sure that you configure SQL Min Server Memory and SQL Max Server Memory for each instance in the VM. And make sure that: ·         Dynamic Memory Startup Memory is greater than the sum of SQL Min Server Memory values for the instances in the VM ·         Dynamic Memory Maximum Memory is greater than the sum of SQL Max Server Memory values for the instances in the VM Q4 – I’m using Large Page Memory Model for my SQL Server. Can I still use Dynamic Memory? The short answer is no. SQL Server does not dynamically change its memory size when configured with Large Page Memory Model. In virtualized environments Hyper-V provides large page support by default. Most of the time, Large Page Memory Model doesn’t bring any benefits to a SQL Server if it’s running in virtualized environments. Q5 – How do I monitor SQL performance when I’m trying Dynamic Memory on my VMs? Use the performance counters below to monitor memory performance for SQL Server: Process - Working Set: This counter is available in the VM via process performance counters. It represents the actual amount of physical memory being used by SQL Server process in the VM. SQL Server – Buffer Cache Hit Ratio: This counter is available in the VM via SQL Server counters. This represents the paging being done by SQL Server. A rate of 90% or higher is desirable. Conclusion These blog posts are a quick start to a story that will be developing more in the near future. We’re still continuing our testing and investigations to provide more detailed configuration guidelines with example performance numbers with a white paper in the upcoming months. Now it’s time to give SQL Server and Hyper-V Dynamic Memory a try. Use this guidelines to kick-start your environment. See what you think about it and let us know of your experiences. - Serdar Sutay Originally posted at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlosteam/

  • Ubuntu server loses exactly 5 minutes once in a while

    - by Harold Smith
    I noticed that my server, an Ubuntu server 12.04, was losing time. I figured the hardware clock was off or maybe dying due to a faulty CMOS battery. I installed NTP to ensure the drift would be corrected, but to no avail. During a day it would lose 20 minutes or so. To debug, I created a small cron job to check against a remote servers time, which I knew to be correct. The script calculates the difference in seconds between local and remote time. The result was interesting. It seems to be losing exactly 5 minutes several times during the day. Look at this log (difference from remote server noted in seconds): Tue Oct 23 03:30:02 CEST 2012: 284 Tue Oct 23 03:35:02 CEST 2012: 284 Tue Oct 23 03:40:01 CEST 2012: 285 Tue Oct 23 03:45:02 CEST 2012: 285 Tue Oct 23 03:50:02 CEST 2012: 285 Tue Oct 23 03:55:02 CEST 2012: 284 Tue Oct 23 04:00:02 CEST 2012: 284 Tue Oct 23 04:05:01 CEST 2012: 285 Tue Oct 23 04:10:01 CEST 2012: 285 Tue Oct 23 04:15:02 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 04:20:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 04:25:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 04:30:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 04:35:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 04:40:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 04:45:02 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 04:50:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 04:55:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 05:00:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 05:05:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 05:10:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 05:15:02 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 05:20:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 05:25:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 05:30:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 05:35:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 05:40:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 05:45:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 05:50:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 05:55:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:00:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:05:03 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:10:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:15:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 06:20:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:25:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:30:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:35:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:40:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:45:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 06:50:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 06:55:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 07:00:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:05:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:10:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:15:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:20:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:25:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:30:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 07:35:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:40:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:45:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:50:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 07:55:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:00:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 08:05:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:10:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:15:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:20:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:25:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:30:01 CEST 2012: 585 Tue Oct 23 08:35:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:40:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:45:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:50:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 08:55:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:00:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:05:03 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:10:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:15:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:20:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:25:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:30:01 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:35:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:40:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:45:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:50:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 09:55:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 10:00:01 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 10:05:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 10:10:07 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 10:15:02 CEST 2012: 584 Tue Oct 23 10:20:02 CEST 2012: 884 Tue Oct 23 10:25:02 CEST 2012: 884 Tue Oct 23 10:30:02 CEST 2012: 883 Tue Oct 23 10:35:01 CEST 2012: 884 Tue Oct 23 10:40:02 CEST 2012: 884 Tue Oct 23 10:45:02 CEST 2012: 884 Tue Oct 23 10:50:02 CEST 2012: 884 Tue Oct 23 10:55:02 CEST 2012: 1184 Tue Oct 23 11:00:02 CEST 2012: 1183 Tue Oct 23 11:05:01 CEST 2012: 1184 Tue Oct 23 11:10:02 CEST 2012: 1184 Tue Oct 23 11:15:02 CEST 2012: 1184 Tue Oct 23 11:20:02 CEST 2012: 1184 This does not seem to be faulty CMOS battery in my opinion. • System Center 2012 Service Manager change request status stuck at new

    - by Chuck Herrington
The guy that built and setup this system left rather abruptly and I've taken over. My current issues are I have several change requests that are stuck at New. They do not move to Pending or In Progress. The system is not sending emails when incidents are getting assigned to people. This used to work on this system. I have done a lot of searching and the usual solution to this of stopping and restarting the system center services does not help. Can anyone give me any ideas of where else to look? Update: From all the searching I have done it seemed like I was at the point of re-installing. My initial installation of SCSM 2012 was on a machine that was upgraded from SCSM 2010 and also hosted SCCM 2007 and WSUS. We decided to give it a fresh start on a new server by installing a second instance of the SCSM server on a brand new 2008 R2 server then promoting the new server to the workflow master using the procedures outlined in this article - Dealing with Multiple management Servers. I've gotten to the point where we have both the old and the new server up and the new server has been promoted. I had hopped to get spammed by emails all the sudden due to the workflow taking off, but no such luck. Once all the clients are reconfigured to point to the new server we still plan to decommission the old server but at this point it seems to be that the problem is in the database. Short of any other input from the community, my next plan is to install a 180 day trial on a test server, complete with a separate database so that I can do a side by side comparison between a completely fresh install and what I have now and see if I can find any differences. While that install is running I also plan on investigating the event logs to see if there is anything in there that can shed some light on what is happening on the new server. Update 2: So I've now got a test SCSM server up with a completely fresh install including Database and it seems to be able to transition Change Requests from New to In Progress. I'm attempting to find differences between the two. Stay Tuned! Update 3: In looking through the event log on the new SCSM machine i discovered: Log Name: Operations Manager Source: OpsMgr Root Connector Date: 10/9/2013 3:48:18 PM Event ID: 28000 Task Category: None Level: Warning Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: scsm02 Description: The Root connector received an exception from the SDK Service while submitting task status: Cannot set availability on a health service that doesn't exist. This lead me to Event ID 2800 logged after installing secondary server for System Center 2012 Service Manager SP1. I contacted MS to obtain the hotfix, BIG warning here, turns out the hotfix is not so "hot". In order to apply this hotfix, you have to uninstall then reinstall using the files they supply. :( This is where I am at now ... Update 4: Not much luck after the re-install. The errors in the event log have gone away on the new server but the workflows still aren't running and neither the event log nor the workflow status screen seem to indicate why. I've done a comparison of the Activity and the Change Request Event Workflows and I've removed everything from the production system that is not in my fresh test system (which is everything), shut down the services, cleared out the cache folders and restarted the services and still no joy. At the moment the only thing I can think to do is either a)nuke the entire system including the database and start over, losing all of our data in the process or b)contact MS (which is probably going to cost us a butt load of money and time in the end to only advise us to do the same thing. Maybe more idea's will come after coffee ... No answers came after coffee. Attempting to contact MS. Managed to get to their first line of defense, gave them our SA number and someone is supposed to call me back. I am trying to log into my incident on their site to update my ticket with the link to this thread but when i click on the link in the email they sent me it goes to a "Sorry, the page you requested is not available" page ... Linux is looking better and better all the time.

  • NetApp and Hyper-V 2012 best practice/whitepapers?

    - by grimstoner
We've recently acquired a NetApp/Cisco UCS solution, and I'd like to gather some background knowledge as to the best practices when setting up Hyper-V 2012 on such a solution. There is an upcoming seminar (in the Netherlands, http://www.realdolmen.com/nl/MSHyper-v-2012_NetApp), but it's in Dutch, and a couple of weeks away... Does anyone have some whitepapers/documentation about such a setup, or hasn't it been done before?

  • Limit display/session resolution for machines @ VDI environment on RDS 2012

    - by WarP
I have couple of windows 7 entprise virtual machines in collection as part of VDI environment - so users connecting to them through RDS 2012 web site. Is there any way to fix resolution of remote desktops, that user receives (instead of full screen all time) ? I've tried different group policies, but none of them are worked, probably because all those policies are for RDS sessions and not virtual desktops ... And i don't know how to limit resolution locally on win7 machine itself, so connecting users will receive fixed resolution.
