• How to disable monitor auto detection in Windows 7?

  I am currently running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with a dual monitor setup with an NVIDIA 7950 GT graphics card. One monitor is dedicated to this machine and the other monitor is connected to a DVI KVM switch. When I switch to my other computer, Windows 7 disables the monitor. However, when I switch back it does not re-enable the monitor. The only circumstance that automatically re-enables the second monitor is when I switch back after Windows has put the monitors into power save mode. I am continually having to bring up the NVIDIA control panel to have it re-enable the monitor. Under Windows XP I would just disable the NVIDIA service to prevent it from auto-detecting the monitor (which doesn't solve the problem under Win7), and in Vista there was a registry hack that would prevent this. It looks as though that has been removed in Windows 7. I have found similar questions posted on this site, but nothing that matches my problem exactly. • How to install Windows 7 onto software RAID-0

  I recently got a new laptop (Asus G73JH-A2) which has two identical hard drives in it. Unfortunately the motherboard does not have a RAID controller. What I would like to do is run the drives in a RAID-0 configuration to improve performance (plus get the extra capacity on one partition). I would like Windows installed onto the striped volume (RAID 0). I have spent some time using diskpart to create a striped volume across the two drives, however when I go to install windows and select the volume it will not let me select 'Next' giving the error "Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. The partition contains one or more dynamic volumes that are not supported for installation." I'm hoping theres a step that I am missing that will allow me to install windows on a striped volume. Any ideas?

• Is there an RSM replacement in Windows 7? (to eject USB and Firewire devices from command line)

  I know Windows XP and previous had an rsm.exe file in the <root>\windows\system32 folder that could be used to manage media. I used this command in batch files and from the command line to eject external disks (iPod, CF cardreader, etc.). This utility appears not to be included in Windows 7, and I wonder if there is some replacement utility that will allow the same thing. I've been unable to find any such thing. I'm aware of the 3rd party utilities; this question is only about what is included with Windows 7.

  I'm trying to use stunnel to secure a legacy application's communications. I can't seem to get it setup and working. Can anyone provide any hints where I'm going wrong? Here's what I'm trying to accomplish: A windows service on a client machine connects to a server on port 7000 using TCP. I'd like to encrypt the communication between client and server. Here's what I've tried: Created a new server that accepts ssl connections on port 7443. Got a certificate for the server and installed it. That seems to work with my test setup. Installed stunnel on my windows machine (version 7.43 from the distribution archive file). Installed libssl32.dll and libeay32.dll in the same directory as stunnel.exe ( from the openssl-0.9.8h-1 binary distribution). Installed it as a service using "stunnel -install" Configured stunnel as follows: debug=7 output=C:\p4\internal\Utility\Proxy\proxy.log service=Proxy taskbar=no [exchange] accept=7000 client=yes connect=proxy.blah.com:7443 I changed my hosts file to trick the old application into connecting through stunnel: server.blah.com 127.0.0.1 # when client looks up server it goes to stunnel proxy.blah.com IP-address-of-server.blah.com # stunnel connects to new server "server.blah.com" now resolves to the machine it's running on (i.e. stunnel). "proxy.blah.com" goes to the real server. stunnel should connect to the server. I start the stunnel service and try to connect.   I have the following script I wrote by searching Google, and it backs up my Linux system to an archive: #!/bin/bash # init DATE=$(date +20%y%m%d) tar -cvpzf /share/Recovery/Snapshots/$HOSTNAME_$DATE.tar.gz --exclude=/proc --exclude=/lost+found --exclude=/sys --exclude=/mnt --exclude=/media --exclude=/dev --exclude=/share/Archive / This works, but I am wondering if I can format the script to show the command over multiple lines, something like this, so it is easy to edit later: tar -cvpzf /share/Recovery/Snapshots/$HOSTNAME_$DATE.tar.gz --exclude=/proc --exclude=/lost+found --exclude=/sys --exclude=/mnt --exclude=/media --exclude=/dev --exclude=/share/Archive / That way it is easier to read and edit later. Is it possible to format a Bash script this way?

• firefox add on problem

  I have windows 7 and the newest version of mozilla. when i try to install the add-on vimperator for firefox i get an error message: Firefox could not install the file at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/downloads/latest/4891/addon-4891-latest.xpi?src=developers because: Unexpected installation error Review the Error Console log for more details. -203 i have restarted firefox and my computer but nothing seems to work, any suggestions?

• Easy Server Monitoring/Logging point in time solution?

  I managed my company's servers and I need to know if load spiked at 3am on the web or mysql server, what processes were active in apache or what queries were going on in mysql at that point in time and maybe any other information that will help me. I know all of that is in log files all over and its literally a PITA to look it all up and correlate data. isnt there 1 solution thats been invented. i know we have pingdom to monitor uptime and responsiveness. like if it has taken 30 seconds to load a page or an error was given by apache or php or mysql to the browser, i want to know that and what mysql processes were running at the time, the apache full status and maybe top output also. stuff like that also would be looking for a SAAS like cloudkick, something i dont have to spend an entire month of work hours setting up when we can pay for something cheaper.

We are in the process of migrating to sql 2008. We are planning on consolidating multiple sql 2005 into single SQL 2008 Server.If anyone can suggest hardware I would appreciate.   I'm looking into creating a setup on Rackspace Cloud that will allow me to autoscale my webservers (no db) on demand. Preferably using something like response time. I've read into configuration tools like Puppet/Chef, but I'm thinking I can just launch from prepared server images that are ready to go. Is there any tool out there already that can monitor my existing node response times and then launch or scale up new ones based upon certain variables like average X load over Y time? I see there are commercial offerings like Scalr, Rightscale, but how would I do this myself?

• Need clear steps on how to convert a Windows 2000 Server to a XenServer VM

  The source system is not local. The target host running XenServer is not local. The source system is running Windows 2000 Server SP4 and has 1 disk split into 6 partitions, all NTFS: C: 6 GB (boot) D: 15 GB E: 6 GB F: 6 GB G: 5 GB H: 26 GB Most of the partitions are mostly mostly full ( 60%). What is the most straightforward way to do a P2V migration of the server? I can do minor database & data syncs after the P2V is successful & running as a VM within XenServer, it's just getting to that point which is not clear. The option of installing a Windows 2000 Server from scratch is not available, I need to convert the existing physical server as-is into a VM to be hosted within a XenServer environment. I've looked at XenConvert but it maxes out on converting only 4 partitions in one shot, and I'm not certain how to account for the 2 extra partitions. I'm not familiar with XenServer but it's my only option right now to go P2V.

• What is the most likely cause to a Blue Screen of Death when the user presses Ctrl-Alt-Delete?

  My wife is experiencing this with her work laptop--she presses Ctrl-Alt-Delete to lock and she gets the BSOD. The first troubleshooting step is usually to "re-image", and it's locked down. So with this question, I am asking whether the behavior is unique enough that someone in the stack-universe knows exactly what this is (something I can tell her to tell her help desk support). Update: help desk said to order more RAM. Alt-tabbing caused the same behavior today. And...she learned that multiple users are affected. I'm not sure I'll be able to clean any additional info that will help w/ troubleshooting. I'll leave the question here for a bit and if an answer ends up being the actual solution, I'll accept it. If not, I think I should probably remove the question (i'll check meta). Update #2.5: The cause appears to be a ctrl-alt-delete keystroke while Sales Team Configurator is open. This can either be to lock the screen (there are workaround in answers already present) or to unlock the screen (no workaround for that).

  I want to use MSCOMM control in my MS Excel 2010 VBA. The control shall appear in Tools-> Additional Controls dialog box in VBE of MS Excel 2010. I am trying to register MSCOMM32.OCX on my 64-bit Windows 7 machine. However, as I try to register it using regsvr32 as shown in the command window below, I am getting shown error popup. What am I missing here? Why is this component not getting registered? Or this is not the correct way to include MSCOMM control in MS Excel VBA? • Can't connect to wireless router anymore due to data rate problem

  I was playing around with my wireless router, and switched the mode to a fixed mode B. Now< I can no longer assoicate to the AP. Windows does not give any particular error message, but with wireshark I see that the returned error is that the client does not support the necessary data rate. My wireless card is type n, and it is set to mode a/b/g compatible. I tried setting ot to just b, however this made no difference. How can I set the data rate of my card so that I can connect again to my AP? I would prefer not to just reset the device, as there has been some configuration done that would be a pain to redo, and as well I do not have the ISP password handy. Regardless I would like to understand this situation better.
