• Konqueror on Windows XP : protocol not supported - man

  Hello everyone: I am new to the KDE and I am working all the time in a Windows XP environment. So I installed the KDE's Konqueror browser onto my laptop. The only reason for that is to allow me issue man:ls in the browser address bar and to get the man page displayed into the browser rather than printed inside the terminal. The problem is, I then get the error prompt saying that: protocol not supported man I guess something is wrong in the configuration, how to fix this problem? Many thanks in advance. The problem is definitely not the Konqueror browser, but is between the keyboard and the screen...

• Kubuntu 11.04 bad experience, Gimp crashes and other bugs

  I installed Kubuntu 11.04 64bit today. First let me expose some issues, this is not a rant, just some observations on Kubuntu 11.04 :) Flash doesn't work. The package "flashplugin-installer" was installed by rekonq. But still no flash. Additional Drivers (jockey-kde) doesn't show up automatically after first login. I tried to delete a large file (19,2 GB), an error appeared: "Please empty the trash first, no more space available" or something like that, but you know what? My trash was empty! (Then I found in Dolphin the settings to increment the max size of the trash). Amarok has no play/pause/forward/back buttons, only after changing settings to show those buttons on the top bar. GTK applications like ubuntu software center, inkscape... are in english, but my default language is "german". Only gimp allows to install the "de" language pack. The numblock turns off after each restart. In the KDE Control Center, the "remember last state" of numblock is set. But this is not working. I had some crashes: Nepomuk, Policy-kit, plasma-workspace and gimp. But now to the important stuff. I really need Gimp to work. • What extra packages are needed by Amarok to transcode to MP3?

  I'm using Amarok 2.6.0, on KDE version 4.9.3, on Kubuntu 12.04. I would like to be able to copy my music onto my MP3 player (in this case, my iPhone 3), but to transcode the tracks as I copy them over. However, when I right-click on the selected track, and choose "Copy to Collection" and select my iPhone, the option to transcode to MP3 is greyed out. What additional packages does Amarok need in order to enable the transcode to MP3 option?   Is there a way to add widgets to a Gnome screensaver? I think this can be done with KDE 4, but I've never liked KDE very much. I'm a programmer and comfortable with writing code if needed. I'd like to be able to: See the weather and forecast Control Rhythmbox Use a flash card widget for reviewing musical concepts The reason I want these on the screensaver is that I have login restrictions. • Linux screenshots, how to take them like a mac

  I run opensuse 11.2 KDE 4.3.5. I do not have a mac, but I've used one and really like the one feature of the screenshots. Specifically, Command+Shift+3 which saves the screenshot to the desktop without having to open a program or anything like that. Is there any way to do this in KDE, Ksnapshot is nice, but I'd like not to have to click the button every time. Thanks PS. I've tried the command line Import and it always gives me some X server not confectioned or something, So thats not an option.

• buggy mouse click after a while

  The cursor of my mouse is moving as well on my twin view, but after a WHILE, or if I start kde with runlevels (I don't know why, but startx works better) I can't click anything. I have had replaced the mouse with another one, but it's the same problem, so it's not a hardware problem. The problem occurs both with gnome and kde. My config : PC Dell Optiplex 780 archlinux x86_64 (up to date) xf86-input-evdev 2.6.0-4 xorg-server 1.11.2-2 kernel linux-3.1.1-1-ARCH My Xorg log doesn't contains "EE" string for errors. Any clue ?

• How to automatically show USB camera or memory stick contents in Icewm?

  I normally use a very lightweight Linux setup. No desktop like Gnome or KDE, just Icewm as the windows manager and nothing else that normal users might consider essential. Well, I do need a file manager - I use Thunar. Recently I've been trying Gnome. Whenever I shove a memory stick into a USB port, or connect my digital camera, it can automatically pop up a file manager showing all the goodies on that device. KDE does this too. I like this. Although quick at the command line, I like not having to go sudo to mount the device and all that. If I want to stick with a lightweight setup using Icewm+Thunar, is there something non-huge I can install to make external devices fire up a Thunar window, or otherwise make access to the contents brainlessly easy?

  How can I pass a value into an ssh command, such that the environment that is started on the host machine starts with a certain environment variable set to my choosing? EDIT: The goal is to pass the current kde desktop ( from dcop kwin KWinInterface currentDesktop ) to the new shell created so that I can pass back an nfs locations to my JEdit instance on the original server which is unique for each KDE desktop. ( Using a mechanism like emacsserver/emacsclient) The reason multiples ssh instances can be in flight at one time is because when I'm setting up my environment, I'm opening a bunch of different ssh instances to different machines.

• Application windows have colossal fonts in Enlightenment 17, while system windows are untouched

  I'm trying to get used to using Enlightenment instead of KDE on my Slackware64 multilib computer, but I'm having a terrible time getting one problem fixed. My fonts are HUGE on application windows - from Firefox to Gimp to Xchat to anything else, all the fonts are 3x the size they should be. But at the same time, the system menu is the correct size. I'm at a loss - I want the applications to have the same DPI as the system menu. When I'm in KDE, they all look normal. I've included a screenshot to show what I'm talking about.

• Tool to know what is making the desktop load longer than usual

  Is there such a tool? My desktop as of late is taking longer to load than usual. I'd say it takes more than 20 seconds from GDM login until I see the desktop. Aside from disabling all app-indicators and testing it manually one by one, what else should be done? The only indicator I remember activating lately was bluetooth and I have already disabled it from Startup Applications. No improvement. I know of bootchart, but I don't really have a problem with boot. It is only after I login that the issue occurs. I'm on Natty Narwhal. *Updating this thread.... The issue seems to have fixed itself and I did not even do anything. It is really weird. I guess this is how Gnome works (and talk about not recognizing your theme and reverting to Windows 95-like look. How about that?). I have been a long time KDE user and I never encountered issues like this one. The KDE then may have booted into the desktop longer (from KDM) but at least I know it was consistent.

• Perl regex matching output from `w -hs` command

  I'm trying to write a Perl script that will work better with KDE's kwrited, which, as far as I can tell, is connected to a pts and puts every line it receives through the KDE system tray notifications, with the title "KDE write daemon". Unfortunately, it makes a separate notification for each and every line, so it spams up the system tray with multiline messages on regular old write, and for some reason it cuts off the entire last line of the message when using wall (One-line messages are also goners.). I was also hoping to make it so that it could broadcast across a LAN with thick clients. Before starting on that (which would require ssh, of course), I tried to make an ssh-less version to make sure it works. • Is having several desktop environments on one account bad?

  I have gnome classic, cinnamon, unity, gnome 3, and KDE installed on my only user account because I enjoy a little change from time to time (although my favorite is gnome classic) so I installed all of these desktop environments. I heard from a friend that it could potentially cause some problems. I was also told that it would be okay if I created a separate account for each environment, but I don't want to if I don't have to. Any help is much appreciated, thank you.

• GUI keyword confusion

  Ive been using linux for some time, and ive never quite got my head around the various keywords attached to the GUI. I think i understand the difference between the likes of KDE and Gnome - They are collections of applications and other software that make up a given gui environment. However a quick read through any vaguely technical linux websites will reveal terms like: Murrine Clearlooks GTK Beryl Metacity Window manager Which if im honest, i have no real idea what they mean and how they all relate to each other. Can anybody clarify?

Specifically the features from the Kubuntu task manager that I am looking for are the ability to control the I/O priority of individual processes (not just their nice), and the ability to control the I/O scheduling algorithm ( round-robin, FIFO, etc). • How to debug lag using Bluetooth connected mouse and A2DP headset?

  I own a Logitech M555b mouse (since a week) for use with my HP Elitebook 8570w laptop running Kubuntu 12.04. Works fine right after connecting using the KDE Bluetooth control module. However, after some time (seemingly random), it starts to lag. Movements are being delayed for roughly 500ms for a short period of time. Usually it recovers after some time too, but it can take minutes. All actions are being delayed: movements, click, scrolls. Additionally, the movements can be choppy during these times. A workaround that always works for the same short period of time is to disconnect an re-connect the mouse. This can be done using the same KDE Bluetooth control module. What did I try already? Running this at boot time: echo on > `readlink -f /sys/class/bluetooth/hci0`/../../../power/level To disable any power saving features on the Bluetooth hci0 device. Check the mouse's batteries (it's just a week old, other new batteries: same result) Checking logs and kernel messages about Bluetooth-related entries: none aside the expected messages on connect time. I'm running kernel 3.5.0-13-generic as provided in the xorg-edgers PPA. Booting the regular 3.2 Precise kernel results in the same behaviour. Some other information that may help: It happens when no other Bluetooth connections are active on the machine. Similar symptoms also occur on my Bluetooth stereo (A2DP) headset, but then it's audio lagging and skipping. Swapping Bluetooth profiles as described here then helps. Conclusion: it's not the mouse that's faulty. The headset always worked fine using my now dead Thinkpad T61p with built-in Bluetooth. The bluetooth module in my laptop is connected via USB and shows up as Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0a5c:21e1 Broadcom Corp. I'm mobile and several people around me are using Bluetooth at work (A2DP mostly). It also occurs at home, where my neighbours are probably using Bluetooth as well. It could just be radio interference, but I think Bluetooth connections should just hop to another channel. And, moreover, it just works properly instantly when re-connecting. Therefore I think it's a software driver issue and I'd like to debug it. Is there any way to get more verbose logging on the Bluetooth(-hid) modules?
