• iPhone GPS Development - Tips + Tricks

  Hello - I'm looking for some feedback, blog links, etc that offer some tips and tricks for iPhone GPS development. I've read and understand the API, I have my demo app up and running, etc but I have run into some "quirks" with gps on iphone. For example, it seems that you you will receive a lot less location updates when your iphone enters "power save" mode. I've read that you can combat this by playing music in your application [not sure if this is true]. It also seems that, terms of making a reasonable pedometer, you should filter out any reading with horizontal accuracies less than 20 meters. Does this sound right? Is there any kind of checklist out on the web for iphone gps gotchas? Thanks in advance.

I keep hearing about various JavaScript and CSS frameworks. I know very little about these frameworks so maybe this question is overly broad and open ended. What are the strengths, weaknesses, and popularity of the various frameworks? Should I be using YUI, JQuery, neither, or something else?

• Implementing a horizontal compass on the iPhone - algorithm?

  A horizontal compass looks something like this if you are facing due East (90 degrees). 85----90---95 If you were facing due 355 degrees northwest, it would look like this: 350----355---0 As you turn the compass, the number should cycle from 0 - 360 - 0 So, my question is, how would you implement a view like this on the iPhone? I had a couple of ideas: Make one long image with all numbers and tick marks, and shift it left/right when the compass heading changes Create pieces of the view as tiles and append them when the compass heading changes. Create a line of tick marks that shifts with the compass heading, and just write numbers on it as needed. How would you attack this problem? Im mainly looking for algorithmic advice, but if you ave code or pseudo-code to demonstrate, that would be helpful too.

• Novel fitness measure for evolutionary image matching simulation

  I'm sure many people have already seen demos of using genetic algorithms to generate an image that matches a sample image. You start off with noise, and gradually it comes to resemble the target image more and more closely, until you have a more-or-less exact duplicate. All of the examples I've seen, however, use a fairly straightforward pixel-by-pixel comparison, resulting in a fairly predictable 'fade in' of the final image. What I'm looking for is something more novel: A fitness measure that comes closer to what we see as 'similar' than the naive approach. I don't have a specific result in mind - I'm just looking for something more 'interesting' than the default. Suggestions?

  I am using cocos2d on the iPhone and am wondering if it is possible to use a texture mask in order to create tile transitions / fringe layer. For example, a grass tile and a dirt tile, I would want a tile that had both grass and dirt in it... Has anyone done this, or is the only way to create one tile for every possible transition?

Avoiding having to create a whole camera app myself, I am calling up: Intent camera = new Intent(MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE); this.startActivityForResult(camera, PICTURE_RESULT); However, the camera is very advanced and beautiful :) but not for my purposes. :( Is there a way to restrict the camera to control size, resolution, disable setup button, flash, face recognition, etc...?

• Keep Window Inactive In Appearance Even When Activated

  Is there a way to keep a window inactive looking, even if it contains focus? I have two forms (A and B). After the user interacts with A, I transfer focus back to B. The result of the focus transfers (the user clicking on the A, then focus being transferred back to B) is that form A blinks from active to inactive. This looks ugly (especially on Vista where A momentarily gets a bigger shadow). How can I make A stay inactive looking so this blinking will not happen?

  I'm having problems installing the RMagick rubygem on Centos 5. I've followed the steps detailed in http://rmagick.rubyforge.org/install2-linux.html but when I try: sudo gem install rmagick the result is: Building native extensions. This could take a while... • How to temporarily replace one primitive type with another when compiling to different targets in c#

  How to easily/quickly replace float's for doubles (for example) for compiling to two different targets using these two particular choices of primitive types? Discussion: I have a large amount of c# code under development that I need to compile to alternatively use float, double or decimals depending on the use case of the target assembly. Using something like “class MYNumber : Double” so that it is only necessary to change one line of code does not work as Double is sealed, and obviously there is no #define in C#. Peppering the code with #if #else statements is also not an option, there is just too much supporting Math operators/related code using these particular primitive types. I am at a loss on how to do this apparently simple task, thanks! Edit: Just a quick comment in relation to boxing mentioned in Kyles reply: Unfortunately I need to avoid boxing, mainly since float's are being chosen when maximum speed is required, and decimals when maximum accuracy is the priority (and taking the 20x+ performance hit is acceptable). Boxing would probably rules out decimals as a valid choice and defeat the purpose somewhat. Edit2: For reference, those suggesting generics as a possible answer to this question note that there are many issues which count generics out (at least for our needs). • Using Word COM objects in .NET, InlineShapes not copied from template to document

  Using .NET and the Word Interop I am programmatically creating a new Word doc from a template (.dot) file. There are a few ways to do this but I've chosen to use the AttachedTemplate property, as such: Dim oWord As New Word.Application() oWord.Visible = False Dim oDocuments As Word.Documents = oWord.Documents Dim oDoc As Word.Document = oDocuments.Add() oDoc.AttachedTemplate = sTemplatePath oDoc.UpdateStyles() (I'm choosing the AttachedTemplate means of doing this over the Documents.Add() method because of a memory leak issue I discovered when using Documents.Add() to open from templates.) This works fine EXCEPT when there is an image (represented as an InlineShape) in the template footer. In that case the image does not appear in the resulting document. Specifically the image should appear in the oDoc.Sections.Item(1).Footers.Item(WdHeaderFooterIndex.wdHeaderFooterPrimary).Range.InlineShapes collection but it does not. This is not a problem when using Documents.Add(), however as I said that method is not an option for me. Is there an extra step I have to take to get the images from the template? I already discovered that when using AttachedTemplate I have to explicitly call UpdateStyles() (as you can see in my code snippet) to apply the template styles to the document, whereas that is done automatically when using Documents.Add(). Or maybe there's some crazy workaround? Your help is much appreciated! :)

• How can you centre an image within the image control in SQL Server Reporting Services 2008?

  I have got an image in an image control on a report in SSRS 2008. The image is coming from an external source, and varies in width. I would like to centre the image within the control, but the image control does not have an equivalent of the text box's TextAlign property to allow right/left/center alignment to be done automatically. I have seen methods to dynamically calculate the amount of left padding as a hack to solve this, http://blogs.msdn.com/chrishays/archive/2004/10/27/CenteredImages.aspx, but the solution gives an error in SSRS 2008, perhaps not surprising given the age of the article. Has anybody got a solution to this for SSRS 2008?

• TypeInitializationException When Getting an NHibernate Session

  I’ve run into what appears to be an NHibernate config problem. Basically, I ran up a simple proof of concept persistence integration test using NUnit, the test simply querys an Oracle database and successfully returns the last record received by the underlying table. However, when the assemblies are taken out of the NUnit test environment and deployed as they would be for an actual application build, my call for an NHibernate session results in a ‘TypeInitializationException’ whilst executing the code line: sessionFactory = New Configuration().Configure().BuildSessionFactory() The application is a vb.net console app running against an Oracle 9.2 database, using a ‘coding framework’ published on the web by Bill McCafferty entitled 'NHibernate Best Practices with ASP.NET' (pre S#harp Architecture).   Hi there, I need to apply validation on input time intervals that are taken in as seconds. Now i am not really good at Regular expressions. So can any body help making a regular expression that can test whether a number is divisible by 60. I was wondering if i could use to test one that check that the number is divisible by 10 and then check whether the same is divisible by 6. • Rails initializes extremely slow on ruby 1.9.1

  I just got my rails 2.3.8 app running on ruby 1.9.1. To get into the console, start the webserver, anything that initializes rails, takes 3 - 4 times longer in ruby 1.9 than in ruby 1.8.7. I'm using ruby version managers so I can easily switch between ruby 1.9 and ruby 1.8.7. The speed difference happens in both production and development. I want to use 1.9 because its must faster once everything is running, but the startup time is so bad the app is timing out on Heroku on the first request. Any ideas why ruby 1.9 would be 3 - 4 times slower? I can't figure it out for the life of me.

• Invalid iPhone Application Binary

  I'm trying to upload an application to the iPhone App Store, but I get this error message from iTunes Connect: The binary you uploaded was invalid. The signature was invalid, or it was not signed with an Apple submission certificate. My guess is that it is not properly signed. I have downloaded my App Store distribution certficate, but I can't figure out how to "sign" my application with it. The SDK's documentation about code signing is not very helpful. (FWIW, I can install the app on my iPhone just fine using the development provisioning profile.) However, it is possible that I screwed things up on a more basic level. Here's what I did to try to prepare it for upload: In Xcode, select the Device|Release target Select the target and click the Info button. Change "Code Signing Identity" to "iPhone Distribution", and change "Code Signing Provisioning Profile" to my App Store distribution profile. Build Go to the directory where the built MyApp.app bundle is, control-click and choose "Compress" to create MyApp.zip Upload MyApp.zip to the App Store via iTunes Connect (which resulted in the above error message). Can anybody give me any hints? Edit: Found someone with the same problem. • How does Facebook chat avoid continuous polling of the server?

  I am trying to understand how Facebook's chat feature receives messages without continuously poling the server. Firebug shows me a single GET XmlHttpRequest continuously sitting there, waiting for a response from the server. After 5 minutes, this never timed out. How are they preventing timeout? An AJAX request can just sit there like that indefinitely, waiting for a response? Can I do this with JSONRequest? I see this at json.org: JSONRequest is designed to support duplex connections. This permits applications in which the server can asynchronously initiate transmissions. This is done by using two simultaneous requests: one to send and the other to receive. By using the timeout parameter, a POST request can be left pending until the server determines that it has timely data to send. Or is there another way to let an AJAX call just sit there, waiting, besides using JSONRequest?
