• Cannot access Network Shares on Windows Server 2008 running VisualSVN Server

  I have installed VisualSVN server on Windows Server 2008. The server is part of a domain but not the domain controller, it is just a data server and now an SVN server. VisualSVN uses port 80 and can only be access from inside the network (i do i by going to the dns name of the server). However, ever since i have installed this, other computers on the network can no longer access the shared folders on the server EXCEPT the domain controller which has no problems accessing the shares. I am stumped, i am guessing it is something to do with Apache running and not using host-headers (or whatever the Apache equivalent may be) but just being bound to the servers DNS name or IP. Any suggestions?

• Is it possible to force a credential check every time a network share is opened in Windows 7?

  I am running Windows 7 Ultimate and I have mapped a network share to a drive letter. The first time that I open the share, I am prompted for login credentials as expected. I do not select the "Remember my credentials" checkbox and can login successfully, but every time that I re-open the share during the session, I do not need to re-enter my credentials. Is there any way to force a credential check every time that I re-open the share? I do not want to perform a reboot every time that I want to "re-lock" the share.

The wireless modem through which the internet comes through doesn't reach the entire house, so we have another router set up as well. The modem is 192.168.1.1 (let's call this A) and the router is set up as 192.168.1.100 (let's call this B). Subnet masks 255.255.255.0. The printer is hooked up to a PC on B. If my laptop is connected wirelessly to B, it can see the printer. However, if it's connected to A, it doesn't show up in My Network Places. • Optimize Windows file access over network

  At my company I frequently need to access shared files over a Windows network. These files are located on the other side of the planet, so I guess the file share goes through some kind of VPN over Internet, but I don't control this and it is supposed to be "transparent" for me. However it is extremely slow. Displaying the content of a directory in the file explorer takes about 10s. Even if over the Internet, I did not expect that retrieving a list of file names would be that long. Are there any settings to optimize this from my Windows XP workstation, or is it mostly related to the way the network is configured? The only thing I have found so far is to cache all file names, while by default only short file names are cached (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/843418).

• Linking to network shares from Sharepoint pages

  So the place I work decided to set up a Microsoft Sharepoint 2010 server for task management and I (as the lowly entry-level intern) have been tasked with "figuring it out." One thing that the end users really, really, really, want is the ability to link to network shares (that are readable by anyone who will be using sharepoint) from a Sharepoint web page. In order to do this, I have edited the HTML manually with several lines that look like the following: <a href="file://server/share">Server Share</a> This works (sometimes) but the link reported by Sharepoint is often wrong and editing pages that contain these links will mangle the code such that when I open it, the code no longer looks like what it did when I last hit save (breaking all those links). Obviously this is not sustainable. I've been told by coworkers that "It worked that way at the last place I worked" but I haven't found out how yet. Any ideas on how this would work or am I barking up the wrong tree? None of the knowledge searches I've done shed any light on the sitataion. Thanks for any help! -Russell P.S. It should be noted that the file option in an href tag ONLY works in IE (which is a real bummer since we mostly use Firefox).

• my realtime network receiving time differs a lot, anyone can help?

  I wrote a program using tcpip sockets to send commands to a device and receive the data from the device. The data size would be around 200kB to 600KB. The computer is directly connected to the device using a 100MB network. I found that the sending packets always arrive at the computer at 100MB/s speed (I have debugging information on the unit and I also verified this using some network monitoring software), but the receiving time differs a lot from 40ms to 250ms, even if the size is the same (I have a receiving buffer about 700K and the receiving window of 8092 bytes and changing the window size does not change anything). The phenomena differs also on different computers, but on the same computer the problem is very stable. For example, receiving 300k bytes on computer a would be 40ms, but it may cost 200ms on another computer. I have disabled firewall, antivirus, all other network protocol except the TCP/IP. Any experts on this can give me some hints?

How does it maintain such a map? What are the protocols involved?   I've used The Dude to map my network, but I can only export the network map as a graphics file. I've also used Dia and Vision to manually diagram portions of my network. Does anyone out there have a solution where I can do automatic network mapping using a tool like "The Dude", then pull that file over to a manually editable format for cleaning up and/or enhancing in Visio or Dia?

Our new version is going to make use of progressive enhancement - including transitions and effects as well as rounded corners, gradients, web fonts and other CSS techniques. Obviously there are cross-browser ways to achieve most of these things which require various amounts of work to implement. What I'm currently looking into - and what I'd like your experiences of - is how to decide at what point we draw the line between providing an enhanced experience vs just supporting the functionality. • Protocol to mount fat32 network filesystem on Linux with ability to lock files ( not advisory locks

  I have a fat32 filesystem sitting on a NAS storage device (nslu2) that I need to mount on my Ubuntu system. I've tried Samba and NFS mounts, but both don't seem to support proper locking. More specifically, I am unable to save files to the mounted drive through GNUcash, KeepassX etc, which makes the share fairly useless. Is there a protocol that allows me to achieve this ? Note that the NAS storage device is running a linux OS so I can run pretty much any protocol that has a linux implementation. The only option I'm not looking for is to reformat the partition to ext3, which I'm not able to do due to other constraints. Alternatively, has anyone managed proper locking of a fat32 system over the network using Samba ? Or, is advisory locking the best you get with a network-mounted fat32 file system ? I've thought of trying sshfs but I've not found any indication that this will solve my problem. Edit: Okay, maybe I can reformat the drive, but to any file system except ext3. The "unslung" nslu2 doesn't like more than one ext3 drive, and I already have one attached. So any solution that involves reformatting the drive to ntfs, hfs etc is fine, as long as I can mount it on linux and lock files.

• Qnap won't connect to Windows Share

  I have a qnap nmp-1000 in my network and would like to stream my films from my win7 laptop to the nmap-1000 device. I just managed to do so with upnp sharing, but I would like to, for security reasons, share my files over a shared folder which is password protected. My problem is when I'm searching for devices on my network with the qnap then it won't find any. When I try to mount a remote disk on my qnap it will just fail with an connection failed message. But when I try to connect to the qnap device with my laptop, it does this succesfully. Can someone guide me through on how to get my setup working?

  Loosely related to this question Network Share causing Cygwin to run slowly after 'ls', I'd like to write a little batch file that I can execute to disconnect the host from any network shares and subsequently another batch file to reconnect. Ideally, this would be something that I can execute from a PuTTY terminal, SSHed into the box running cygwin. • Subversion (SVN) equivalant to Visual Source Safe (VSS) "Share"

  Hi, I have a scenario in my project where I need to share a single file between multiple projects in the same solution. Back in my Visual Source Safe days (Shudder), I'd use the "Share" option to allow me to make changes to this file in any of the locations. Then once it was checked in I could guarantee that the other locations will get the update. I'm trying to do this in Subversion but I can't seem to find the option anywhere. I do know about svn:externals however I'm only interested in sharing a single file between multiple locations. Does anyone know how to do this in Subversion? Thanks

• Detect file system changes on Samba share with Java on Windows

  Hi, for a recent project I need to detect file system changes on a mapped Samba share from java on windows: Creates, updates and removes. At the moment I am using a folder poll that maintains a list of files and their modified timestamp to look for events. But my problem is that this folder poll only peeks into the folder at certain times (every 10 seconds for example), so an updated file can be updated twice between two polls without recognizing. Is there any way to get events from windows inside Java whenever a file event occours on that mappep Samba share? Thanks!

• hyperlink in firefox to windows share

  I am having trouble creating a hyperlink to a windows share, that works correctly in firefox and IE9. The original line was this: <a href="\\10.1.3.33\sharename\filename.txt" target="_new">Link</a> This works correctly in IE9, andopens the file as you would expect. However, this does not seem to work in firefox, as it just appends the above to the root directory, so it ends up looking in: /\10.1.3.33/sharename/filename I have tried as someone suggested and appending file:// to the pathname, but this does not seem to load anything in firefox, but does work in IE.   I've installed a WiFi Adapter in my Windows XP PC and created an ad-hoc network. I am able to connect to the network through my iPod Touch. On the same PC I have a LAN connection to the Internet. • Limited connection whenever I connect to a Wi-Fi network outside the company

  Whenever I connect my work laptop to a wireless network outside of my company, the connection shows as Limited, and there is no internet access. I have tried several times by disabling/enabling the network adapter, restarting the computer... without success. Sometimes, after a while, without taking any action, it shows fine, and I have internet access. But can pass 2 hours before this happens. My computer is under a domain network, but I don't think that's the problem, because I can successfuly connect other computers belonging to same domain to other networks. I'm running Windows 8 Pro and my network adapter is the following: Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter Any idea of which is the problem and how to solve it?
