  • Where do you keep your code?

    Your code is of course checked into a repository somewhere, but where do you keep your working copy/copies? C:\Program Files isn't right, as it's for installed packages. My Documents somehow doesn't seem right, either—a My Code folder next to My Music and My Pictures? Dumping in C:\ is messy, but seems to be "working" for other people in my office.

    I come from a web developer background, so I'm fairly familiar with PHP and JavaScript, but I'd eventually like to branch out into other languages. At this point, I don't have a particular direction or platform that I'm leaning toward as far as learning a new language or what I would use it for, but I would like to learn a little bit more about programming languages in general and what each one is used for. I've often heard (and I agree) that you should use the right tool for the job, so what jobs are each programming language best suited for? Edit: If you've worked with some of the newer or more obscure languages, please share for those as well.

    Naming things well is arguably Job 1 for professional programmers. Yet we have all suffered from some bad naming choices from time to time. So just to vent a little, what are some doozies that you may have run across? Just to get things started: One of our original developers wasn't sure what to call a secondary key - on what turned out to be a primary table for this app - so he called it: DL2WhateverTheHellThatIs. Unfortunately this system generates entity mappings from the XML, and attributes defined there result in classes, methods, and constants that are referenced through-out the app. To this day it is very hard to find a source file that does not reference this, er, thing! A few actual examples: DL2WhateverTheHellThatIsBean cos = (DL2WhateverTheHellThatIsBean)itr.next(); String code = getDL2WhateverTheHellThatIs().getCode(); From from = new From("DL2WhateverTheHellThatIs"); String filter = "_dL2WhateverTheHellThatIs._code"; (Very difficult to refactor)

  • A Newbie question regarding Software Development

    Hi, I'm going to complete my B.pharm (Hons.) degree and, you know, I don't have much knowledge about programing. I was wondering to build a software on my own. Could you guys tell me what to learn first for that? Is it too hard for a student of other discipline to build a software? Let me know please. The software I want to make is like a dictionary (or more specifically like "Physician's Desk Reference"). It should find the generic name, company name, indication, price etc. of a drug when I enter the brand name and vice versa. To build a software like that what programing language could help me most and what (and how many) language should I learn first? In my country, there is no practice of Community pharmacy (most of the pharmacy stores are run by unskilled people), that's why this type of thing could help them sell drugs. Would you please tell me what I'm to do and how tough it is? I'm very keen to learn programming.   • What is your company's stance on Developers using Laptops?

    I am a developer and my company is moving towards a "no laptop" policy in fear of them being lost or stolen and source code being compromised. Now I don't work for NASA, the military or anything labeled Top Secret but our code is very important to our business nonetheless (as all source code would be). I'll be honest, I disagree with this policy against laptops and wanted to see what others think. I'd like to know: What is your team/company's stance on laptops Your company's size and/or field (small, medium or large, Fortune 500, etc). Whether you've had to take any extra precautions (signing any additional legal, ensure your hard drive is encrypted, etc). Thanks!

    The HP-32S still holds a soft spot in my heart, even though it only had 4 registers. I have fond memories of writing a nonlinear solver for finding an azeotrope curve during a Thermodynamics final. Despite the increase in power, memory, pixels and features the HP-32G that followed never could steal my heart away. Here's to you, HP-32S.   • Model Django Poll

    I followed the django tutorial here: http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/intro/tutorial01/ and now I am at creating a poll. The code below works fine until I want to create choices, where for some reason I always get this error message: line 22, in unicode return self.question AttributeError: 'Choice' object has no attribute 'question' Unfortunatley, I dont understand where I made an error.   • Most frustrating programming style you've encountered

    When it comes to coding style I'm a pretty relaxed programmer. I'm not firmly dug into a particular coding style. I'd prefer a consistent overall style in a large code base but I'm not going to sweat every little detail of how the code is formatted. Still there are some coding styles that drive me crazy. No matter what I can't look at examples of these styles without reaching for a VIM buffer to "fix" the "problem". I can't help it. It's not even wrong, I just can't look at it for some reason. For instance the following comment style almost completely prevents me from actually being able to read the code. if (someConditional) // Comment goes here { other code } What's the most frustrating style you've encountered?

    We're looking to add credit card payments to our system (and it needs to be fairly custom, handling variable "per use" charges each month). We would like the integration to be simple and secure (i.e. no storing of credit card data on our system).
