  • ASP.NET and Winforms: What PDF reporting tools are out there and recommended?

    I have ActiveReports for .Net which is a great tool, however the version I have is not going to support Visual Studio 2010. Active Reports quite pricey, so just wondering if there are any better alternatives out there at a competitive price or even open source, before I consider upgrading. I am looking for a reporting tool specifically, that has a designer and is programmable etc, not looking for something that can just produce PDF, eg iTextSharp etc. Output will primarily be PDF for web and windows applications. Using various databases, SQL Server, SQL Server Express, Azure and SQLite, so not sure SQL Server reporting services will work for all these cases. All coments appreciated.

  • Android Apps: What is the recommended targetSdk for broadest appeal?

    I have an Android app that only needs internet access and would like to target API level 3 (1.5) to reach the broadest handset base. However, it appears that targeting API level 3 implicitly requires two additional permissions that are visible to users: modify sd card, and read phone state. See: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1747178/android-permissions-phone-calls-read-phone-state-and-identity) So the connundrum, do I target API level 4 and turn away users running 1.5, or do I target API level 3 and turn away users who are upset that my app is requesting so many permissions that it shouldn't need? What is the smartest thing to do here? Are there really a lot of users still limited to API level 3? I appreciate any wisdom offered! Thanks!

  • Is there a recommended command for "hg bisect --command"?

    I have an emergent bug that I've got to track down tomorrow. I know a previous hg revision which was good so I'm thinking about using hg bisect. However, I'm on Windows and don't want to get into DOS scripting. Ideally, I'd be able to write a Python unit test and have hg bisect use that.     When constructing a website, say a Q&A site or a just a forum site for a community, is just knowing HTML,CSS,PHP, MySQL, and javascript enough to make the site dynamic? I am saying this because when I talked with my teacher, he said that major sites use many languages combined. And he said that a site shouldn't be designed only in PHP. So is it possible to create a good website, not e-commerce, with only html,css, and php?

  • What is the recommended approach to add static subdomains to a website?

    I would like to create a few static subdomains like: mycategory.mydomain.com in a rather small website and would like it to point to the folder: mydomain.com/mycategory without showing such redirection in browser address bar. What is an easiest way to achieve it? I can do it in either IIS settings, asp.net, C# code, etc I guess there are better ways then creating a few separate Sites in IIS - one for each subdomain.

  • Is there a recommended logging path/folder for ASP.NEt applications?

    Currently we use log4net and create a new folder (usually below C:) with write and create access rights for the worker process user. Is there perhaps a standard windows folder we should or could be using such as LOCALAPPDATA? I'm guessing that LOCALAPPDATA is a bad choice in the general case because IIS users tend to be non-interactive users and thus I don't think they have the usual user folder structrues available.

  • Is there a recommended way to communicate scientific/engineering programming to C developers?

    Hi, I have a lot of MATLAB code that needs to get ported to C (execution speed is critical for this work) as part of a back-end process for a web application. When I attempt to outsource this code to a C developer, I assume (correct me if I'm wrong) few C developers also understand MATLAB code (things like indexing and memory management are different, etc.). I wonder if there are any C developers out there that can recommend a procedure for me to follow to best communicate what the code does? For example, should I provide the MATLAB code and explain what it's doing line by line? Or, should I just provide the math/algorithm, explain it in plain English, and let the C developer implement it with this understanding in his/her own way (e.g. can I assume the developer understands how to work with complex math (i.e. imaginary numbers), how to generate histograms, perform an FFT, etc.)? Or, is there a better method? I expect I'm not the first to need to do this, so I wonder if any C developers out there ran into this situation and can share any conventional wisdom how they'd like this task to be transferred?     I'm working on this big website and I want to put it online before its fully finished... I'm working locally and the database is getting really big so I wanted to upload the website and continue to work on it in the server, but allowing people to enter, so I can test. The question is if this is good for SEO, I mean, there are a lot of things SEO related that are incomplete.. For example: there are no friendly URLs, no sitemap, no .htacces file, lot of 'in-construction' sections... Does Google will penalize me forever? How does it works? Google indexes adn get the structure of the site just once or its constantly updating and checking for changes??? What i should do? What you recommend?!!?

    Many IDEs supports to import maven projects directly, but maven has a maven-eclipse-plugin, when you run : mvn eclipse:eclipse It will generate eclipse project settings ,then you can import as generic eclipse project. Which one is better? I prefer the first one, as my IDE is eclipse 3.5 shiped with WTP 3.1 and m2eclipse, I don't know if maven-eclipse-plugin support WTP 3.1 project settings ? If I don't import correct project settings, I don't think eclipse will recognize my project,when I deploy a web application, it ususally can't find webroot folder.

  • C function prototype: void f(). Is it recommended?

    Hi, I'm learning C and I saw in a book that a function prototype has the form void f() and in the function declaration or in the calling function, the f function takes arguments. Thus In the function declaration we have something like void f(long double y[], long double A) and in the calling function is f(y, A). The function is doing operations on the array y i.e. when the function is called, some elements in the array y are changing. A is just a constant numerical value that doesn't change. I have two questions: If defining the function prototype at the top in the program as void f() a good practice? Or is it better to put it as void f(long double y[], long double A) as in the function declaration? The called function f is changing elements in the array y. Is void the right return type? The program is working fine as such with the void as described. Or should I change all my "voids" to "long double". I'm working with long double as I need as much precision as possible though on my machine both double and long double gives me 15 precision digits. Thanks a lot

I have being doing some research on the different frameworks that are available and I want to find which one is right for me.   • Recommended ways to install USB drivers with a Visual Studio 2005 Setup Project?

    I need to install a USB driver with an application, and I'm using a Visual Studio 2005 Setup Project to create the installer. The driver only needs to be installed sufficient enough so that when the USB device is plugged in, Windows will go off doing it's "installing device" routine and do the rest of the job. It would be okay also to have the setup finish and then the user connects the device when required with the driver install completing then. However the user shouldn't be prompted to find a driver location. The USB drivers I have are available either as plain .sys / .inf files, or as a full installer (.msi together with a setup.exe wrapper). The full installer deals with combinations of operating systems and languages, but the application is for internal use and I can limit the target OS to Windows XP. Would it be better just to run the available installer via a custom action, or to install via the .inf file somehow (I'm not sure how to do that)?

    At the moment I achieve this using something like this: var myElem = "<tr id='tr-1'><td>content</td></tr>"; $("#myTable").append(myElem); $("#tr-1").click(function() { // blah blah }); Traditionally, when I wasn't using jQuery, I used to do something like this: var myElem = document.createElement(...); var myTable = document.getElementById("myTable"); myTable.appendChild(myElem); myElem.onclick = function() { // blah blah } The thing is, in the second approach I already have a reference to myElem and I don't have to scan the DOM ($("#tr-1")) to find it, like the jQuery approach, and hence it should be much faster especially in big pages. Isn't there a better jQuery-ish way to accomplish this task?
