• w2k3 chkdsk errors as vmware 1.8 guest

  We have two Dell servers (CentOS 5.x) hosting a variety of VMs including 3 W2K3 and 1 W2K servers as guests as well as a handful of other Linux guests. Each Windows VM has 2 drives, C: and D:. on 2 of the W2K3 and the W2K boxes we have recurring errors appearing on a daily basis as reported by CHKDSK. We'll run CHKDSK /f and reboot all affected machines and the errors are reported as fixed. The next day CHKDSK will report the same errors. None of the linux guests nor either host report errors when the are rebooted. The RAID controllers are not reporting errors. We're beginning to think that these are phantom errors somehow, but I'm not willing to go to the bank on that just yet. Anybody have similar experiences or advice? Thanks! Sean

• How much effort is SQL Server 2008 Administration?

  Hi, I am looking for a suitable hosting environment for an ASP.NET MVC application. One of the options I have is renting a Hyper-V server and installing my license of SQL Server 2008 on it. I'm a bit wary of shared hosting since the one I have tried so far did not seem to have very consistent performance. One potential problem is that I would have I do not not know much about SQL Server administration, so I am not sure if this is a good option. I've been running a failover cluster of two linux dedicated servers for over 5 years now and MySQL never gave me any trouble. But that was Linux, and it might be different with a windows system. Is running a halfway efficient MS SQL Server 2008 difficult? Does it require any in-depth administration knowledge? Or perhaps recurring administration effort (such as keeping the server up to date with the latest patches)? Or is it rather an "install and forget" experience similar to MySQL?

  we are building a web front end for a internet access token management system that uses radius (freeradius) queried from a captive portal. Reason for building this part is the integration into the accounting and billing platform that operates behind the scenes (all other parts are currently available open source software) The structure is fairly standard, and setting up the basic bits were easy enough (authentication, traffic updates from the captive portal, account expiry date/times) - but I seem to have run out of ability when it comes to limiting an account by traffic consumed. So we can: set up usernames / passwords set expiry dates/times for a given user see the traffic for that user being accurately updated in RADACCT But we can't figure out the correct way/attribute to expire a user when they have consumed X octets of traffic. What attributes are used, or - maybe more accurately - what would be the correct way to use these attributes to limit an account to a certain volume of traffic? Any links to documentation appreciated - freeradius documentation doesn't seem to address the issue directly, or I'm looking in the wrong place... --mark

I understand that this can occur if the exchange information store is filling up with named properties... but I don't know how to determine which specific named property is at fault here.   I have gotten a request to roll out a total of 8 internet cafe's in a large network. Budget is non-existent as it will all be done for a non-profit. I was planing to use Ubuntu and live-cds to minimize the amount of management required, but I can't seem to find any suitable internet cafe system that is Ubuntu based. The requirements are pretty basic: It needs to keep track of logged in time and log out users when their time it up. No billing will be done, it will just be used to ensure people can share the computers fairly. It should be possible to force logout from a central system. Users will be unskilled, so it has to have a GUI. What (preferably free, considering the shoe-string budget) software would you suggest to manage this?

  Symptoms: Server becomes unresponsive - Increase in load, all services stop Loss of connectivity - Ping/SSH Flush MySQL hosts after reboot - As MySQL refuses new connections Intermittent Apache crashes Generally happens early morning hours - 2 days of the week are however excluded Changes made: Updated the OS - to Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS Not sure if the MySQL server was also updated in the process Current MySQL version - mysql Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.1.63, for debian-linux-gnu (x86_64) using readline 6.1 Updated Plesk from 10.4.4 Update #47 to 11.0.9 Update #23 Rebooted on almost daily basis All crons stopped for the times corresponding to the server crashes Created a MySQL log to monitor the lock times on queries Possible causes: Failing hardware Incorrect software configuration (MySQL, Apache etc) Responsibilities: Small webserver Runs our billing system - WHMCS Responsible for CRONs Bulk-email solution - No delivery times coincide with server crashes Proposed solutions: Move machine over to VM Format and restore the Plesk server backup and take it from there? Side notes: Seems to be a general Apache failure across all our linux servers - Intermittent problem Are we doing something fundamentally wrong in the Apache config? • htpasswd and htaccess in Plesk 9.3

  Greetings Here is my situation. I currently have one website on my dedicated server. As of now, I have protected the directory /exclusive using the Plesk control panel. I am having a billing company install their password management script on the server but they need the absolute location to the .htpasswd file. I can't find it or the .htaccess file. Would it be easier to unprotect the /exclusive directory and create the .htaccess file in notepad? If this is done, where should I place the .htpasswd file? -jw

• nsclient++ intermittent connection refused on same subnet

  I have setup Nagios and nsclient++ on a number of my Windows servers. They are all in the same subnet so no routing or firewall stuff is taking place in between the endpoints, and I have verified that the firewalls on the servers are not causing trouble. The problem is that the scheduled checks sometimes fail with "connection refused" and sometimes work! It is a frustrating problem to resolve because I do not know what to look for. One place I did look is in the nsclient++ logs, where I am seeing this recurring error: ...\trunk\modules\CheckSystem\PDHCollector.cpp:148: Failed to query performance counters: \238... This sounds promising, but I couldn't find much on Google about this error as it pertains to NSClient++

• Oracle licensing /pricing ?

  Question: I'd like to download Oracle 11g database for evaluation purposes. Now I found this link for downloads: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/downloads/index.html But it says one must register 'for accessing premium contents'. But in the same time, it looks like one can download the full database for free. But surely, Oracle doesn't give it for free, but in the registration, there's no mention of any cost/fees, or any billing address. Is this registration free, or as 'premium' suggests, will you get a bill for it if you do (supposed you enter true data) ? Or how does Oracle handle licensing/payment ? I can not see any price tag there anywhere, nor any information on it on that registration page.

• Ubuntu Kernel Panic on Inserting Network Cable

  I've been having a recurring kernel panic with my Ubuntu 9.04 installation (see other posts by me). Today, I was fiddling around trying to get some cable attached when the system panicked. Looking at the layout, the only cable in the vicinity was the network cable. Upon further investigation, it seems that the system reliably panics whenever I insert a network cable. Removing the cable does not cause the panic. How do I stop the system panicking when I insert the network cable? If more information is needed, please add comments/answers and I'll post the required data.

• Changing administrator for hosted Exchange account

  We are using a hosted MS Exchange provider, and they claim that our account can only have one administrator. They also claim that they cannot change which login is granted administrator privileges. This means that the user account that was initially created five years ago is the only account that can change our billing information, among other things. The employee associated with the current admin account is no longer with the company, so we'd like to move the admin privileges to a new "sysadmin" account, and delete this employee's account. Shouldn't this be really easy to do? Is my hosted exchange provider telling the truth?

• Cheapest way to go for somebody who wants to accept payments, but won't be accepting hundreds of ord

  I have a client who lectures, and wants to sell spots to his lecture online. I would preferably like to set him up with a solution that allows me to collect billing information on his site. My experience with e-commerce is in using solutions like Authorize.net, however this does not seem cost effective since I can't imagine he's making a huge profit off of this. I'm afraid he would lose money in the cost of using Authorize.net (or any payment gateway for the matter). I could use google checkout or paypal express, but this would require me to leave his site (although with google checkout, it looks like, from a glance, that I could just submit to their form from my server, and likely with paypal as well, but I don't know if this is against their TOS). What is the most cost-effective solution for accepting credit card payments in this situation?

  I'm working with Hosted SharePoint 2007 with Forms Server. I need to allow client access to submit HTML forms designed in Infopath. Problem is, I need to make sure the clients don't see the library. There is sensitive data that will be on these forms. I also need to have a repeated library that is based on the Internal Admin records and requirements. Outside of making a seperate library per customer, does anyone have any suggestions? My Goal: 1: Customers enter their requests through a link or provided page 2: Internally address the requests and perform required arrangements, add billing and payment fields 3: Have SharePoint metrics, reports, etc... based on the provided intormation and status.   (not exactly sure if this is the right place for this question, but I trust you will migrate it if it isn't) I was having a problem with gdb, and while there issue appears to be recurring, I found only one instance of someone recently experiencing the same problem. I found this other instance on a mailman archived mailing list. Then I tried some more things and finally solved the issue with gdb. So, now I want to report back the solution I found to the mailing list. However, this is really only of use if mailman recognizes my mail as being the same thread as the original problem, but I do not have that mail (just the online archived version of it) so I cannot reply to it. My question: How can I make sure mailman considers my mail as a reply to that thread? Is simply copying the topic enough?

  The Dc number can vary. The error is a sporadic, but when it happens it prevents the contents of the recycle bin from being deleted. It can also occur when the recycle bin appears to be empty, yet it has the crumpled paper indicator. Rebooting makes the problem go away, but it can also magically go away by just waiting a long time, like over night. But the problem keeps recurring with no rhyme or reason. What is causing this? I really don't want to reinstall Windows.

  I am using Outlook 2010 - I have my emails showing in there. and exported my emails, into a csv file. (file..options..advanced...export..export to a file.. I have opened that csv file in excel Here is a list of the fields it shows. I see "Date" doesn't appear among them. Also, (and less importantly, and as a very secondary issue) is there a convenient way to read the csv file? reading an email with a long body, in excel, is not convenient, I need to select all of the body from the cell and copy/paste it into notepad.

• Tracking costs within one AWS account

  I have what I'm sure is a very common problem. Our company has many projects and groups working for different clients. We do a lot of our development work in the cloud and deploy our solutions there. We have a VPC set up that isolates projects from each other in their own subnet and that VPC is getting a hardware VPN connection back to HQ. We need to keep track of the cost run up by every project. The way I currently implement this is by providing my own tools for starting and stopping instances which log which user (and thus which project) to bill the instance too. This works okay for BoxUsage costs but not for other costs. I could create a separate account for each project and use consolidated billing, this I think would allow me to pay once but track costs per "project", but I would then not be able to share common resources (like bring account B's running instances inside the same VPC). Does anyone have any suggestions? Cheers C

• How to limit router bandwidth?

  Hello, Is there a way to configure my (D-Link DIR-615) router to throttle down the allowed bandwidth after a certain amount of bandwidth has been used? For instance, I want my router to operate normally up to 20GB. After 20GB I want the router to limit bandwidth to a fraction of the normal speed (perhaps 1/5th). I live in Canada, so in about a month, everyone is going to be billed based on the amount they used (usage based billing). Instead of the unlimited bandwidth that I am enjoying now, most people will be capped at 25GB and will have to fork out $2/GB of over usage. Thank you in advance for the help.

• When XP is asleep for a long time LAN reports code 43, gives up the ghost.

  This one's got me stumped. Whenever the system is asleep for a long time, e.g overnight, the LAN driver reports error code 43 ("a problem") and turns itself off. This has being going on for months, but I never caught the problem until now. The owner merely shuttles back to a restore point I set her when the machine worked. Previously (without knowing exactly what was happening) I have tried everything to resolve this. Manually resetting the TCP/IP, fiddling with the driver Wake From LAN settings, DIFFERENT drivers, etc. etc. The solution is easy, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. Understandably, though, the user is uncomfortable with this operation and the problem persists. What's causing it and how to stop it recurring? Any ideas? Thanks in advance to this great community. • How to scrub a document of all text between brackets with find and replace

  I have a log file and I need to find all instances of <password> hash here </password> and remove the hash and replace it with some dummy text like aaa-aaa-aaa-aaaa. The recurring search argument is anything that matches a bracket that starts with <password> and ends with </password>. All the hashes being replaced will be different. What's the easiest way to go a bout this? The log is on a windows machine. Probably easiest would be to use MS word for me, unless it's achievable with wordpad, notepad, or some other light weight editor like textpad. thanks

• Are Rackspace's Cloud Servers really cloud hosting?

  I may be confused about what cloud hosting really is... I asked Rackspace how its Cloud Server (CS) 256MB/10GB compares to Slicehost's 256slice VPS, and they said it's exactly the same (only different billing and BW). I know they are the same company. So, why do they call it Cloud Server? Isn't it just a collection of VPS (virtual private servers)? For me, cloud hosting would be: if I need any additional horsepower at any given time, the cloud would automatically stack more VPS and then charge me at the end of the month for the surplus of resources. Reading Rackspace's info, it looks like it's for me to decide when to stack more CS and that its Cloud Servers don't AUTOMATICLY scale up. Am I confusing things?
