• Windows XP - removing write protection for usb drives

  I have a laptop who used to belong to my company and when I plug in a usb memory drive, I cannot write any files to it. This is because company policy did not allow writing to usb drives without a special authorization (to prevent theft of files). However the laptop is now mine, and I was given the administrator password, so I am guessing that as administrator I can remove this protection somehow. How can I do this? Currently if I try to copy a file to the drive, Windows simply tells me that the drive is write-protected, whatever usb drive I plug in. Maybe it is some registry setting? Thank you.

• Safely removing my linux dual boot

  Currently, I dual boot with win7 and opensuse 12.1. Is it okay if I first restore the MBR for win7, and then format the linux drives? Or would it be better for me to first format the linux drives, and then restore the MBR? The reason I ask this is sometimes I get nasty errors when I try and boot into my win7 cd in the latter method. Is it possible to restore the MBR without having to boot into the win7 cd? Like, can I remove linux using the disk management utility in win7, and then fix the mbr while I'm still in win7, or do I have to boot into the win7 cd? If I can do this, how do I go about doing so? Thank you. EDIT::::: The spamming of f8 didn't work, it just made loud beeping noises, so I decided to simply boot into my windows disk and use the bootsect /nt60 SYS /mbr command. Note: I haven't formatted my linux partition yet. After I did that, I restarted my computer, and nothing happened. Basically, GRUB is still the MBR and I'm still able to access openSUSE. I think the reason why this is happening is because I think my GRUB is on a separate partion than the linux OS. Here is a picture of my diskmgmt in win7: . openSUSE did all the partioning stuff for me. All I know is that the 40gb that is there is where openSUSE is installed, but I have no clue what's on the 6.05gb and the 14.75gb partitions. Can anyone help me find which partition GRUB is on, and then remove it so I can restore the windows MBR? Thank you.

• Error removing packages in Ubuntu using Synaptic

  I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and during my tries to free space I've removed several packages such as: openoffice, all editors, and some more packages such as players and printers drivers that I don't need and seem o.k to remove. However, after restart, the graphical interface doesn't load, I'm in the xserver, I have console but not gui. I was wondering if anyone can tell me which packages I should not remove or let me know of dependencies I need to consider when messing with packages? Thanks!

But it opens the same settings,plugins and workspace of the previous eclipse .I removed the previous eclipse even the same problem exists. In simple word. How would I set up a system so that I could access it by its hostname? server: httpd apache2 default install I am accessing it with a web browser(surprisingly). also when I ping my osx machine as name, it doesn't work; ping name.local does work.

  Hi, I am running an Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS server. Frequently I open up files using AFP from my Mac. Inevitably this created .DS_Store files on the server (although for some reason they are named :2eDS_Store. However, it also creates variants on DS_Store files. These variants are often named similarly to other files in that directory. • Removing forward lookup zone broke our site - why?

  I'm fairly new to the job and trying to get to grips with the infrastructure here. We've moved a site from being locally hosted on our own network to an external host (1&1). I've transferred the DNS hosting from the previous DNS host to 1&1 to keep things simple. Once everything had gone through, visitors that were external to our network were being directed to the new site on 1&1 but requests from within our network were still going to our own server. I noticed in the DNS server that there was a forward lookup zone for the site pointing to our own server still. My (admittedly simplistic) understanding was that pausing that zone would then cause the DNS server to get the address for the site from our external DNS servers and our users would start landing on our new site. However, what happened instead was that they were being met with "page not found" type errors. I've resolved it my modifying the forward lookup zone A record to point to the external web server but would like to get an understanding as to why pausing the zone didn't work. Would deleting the zone work? I am reluctant to try that as creating it again will not be as easy as simply pressing "start". Many thanks.

  Hi, What is the best way to remove viruses from a Windows machine? Forgot to write down the message, but how I know there was a virus was because my wallpaper was changed to "You have been hacked" or something like that. I've tried reinstalling the OS several times but that doesn't seem to help. Somehow the virus still seems to be there. (i.e machine is slow and some unknown exe is always trying to access the internet). The exe name is something like ,,,,55786. Please enlight. Thanks, Tee

• MySQL slave server not removing old relay binlogs

  I have a MySQL server with slave replication on another host. Today I stumbled across the high disk usage of the slave host and invastigated what takes up all the space. As it turns out this space is occupied by the slaves relay logs. I tried to turn the expire_logs_days variable down and restarted the MySQL daemon but the reported disk space stays the same. I could't really find anything exept that FLUSH LOGS should clear old logs. I tried that with no result. Is there any way I can reduce the disk space that the relay logs take?

  As you can see from the above image, nero is showing some "session is open" in my DVD rewritable disc. The problem is whenever I erase the session it is not getting erased and I am unable to write the remaining part of the disc.   WordPress creates an attachment page for any images uploaded through the post editor and "attached" to that post. After migrating a site, those attachment pages no longer exist, and we now have around 1000 links pointed at 404's. So, I was looking to find a way to do a redirect for any url that has /attachement/ in it's string and then push that url back up one level (which happens to be the post page). so for instance: http://mysite.com/2012/news/blog-post-title/attachment/image-page/ (which doesnt exist) will go to http://mysite.com/2012/news/blog-post-title/ (which does exist). Along with redirecting up one level, I also need to remove anything after /attachment/ (in this case the "image-page." Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

  We have a Dell Power-edge T110 server, with either a PERC S100 or S300 raid controller (I suspect S100), and 2 x 500GB SATA hard discs. These discs are running in RAID-1 configuration, (either 1 or 2 virtual discs), and on top of this, we have the C and D drives. As we are running low on disc space, we are looking at dropping the RAID to get some disc space back. Is it possible to split the discs back into 2 seperate hards discs that the OS can see, without losing all the data on the drives? Even better, would it be possible to split the D: drive, leaving the OS C: drive in RAID1 configuration?

• Issue with Exchange 2010 and Removing a Mailbox Database

  I did a 2003 to 2010 transition and everything is working well. During the 2010 install, a database was copied over with a random number at the end. I found out and moved three system mailboxes out of it into the database that all of the client accounts are in. I used the EMS to move those mailboxes to the other store then used the EMC to remove the mailbox database. Problem is, I am getting an error every few hours in event viewer now complaining about this database. Error is: MSExchageRepl - 4098 The Microsoft Exchange Replication service couldn't find a valid configuration for database '5f012f40-3bad-4003-a373-dbc0ffb6736f' on server 'SERVER'. Error: (nothing reported after this) Does anyone know how to fix this issue? In advance, I appreciate your help and thx for your valuable input!

I have our spam filters now blocking these on the edge until that gets resolved, but now I would like to clean our our users' mailboxes for them. Is there anyway with Exchange 2007 to remove all emails with certain text in the subject line? It would need to be a partial match because the subject changes slightly for each email. I am trying to do this with Forefront's manual scan job + content filter, but it does not seem to like partial matches on the subject.

• Excel removing leading leading zeros when displaying CSV data

  I have a CSV text file with the following content: "Col1","Col2" "01",A "2",B "10", C When I open it up with Excel, it displays as shown here: Note that Cell 2A attempts to display "01" as a number without a leading 0. When I format rows 2 through 4 as "Text", it changes the display to ...but still the leading "0" is gone. Is there a way to open up a CSV file in XLS and be able to see all of the leading zeros in the file by flipping some option? I do not want to have to retype '01 in every cell that should have a leading zero. Furthermore, using a leading apostrophe necessitates that the changes be saved to a XLS format when CSV is desired. My goal is simply to use Excel to view the actual content of the file as text without Excel trying to do me any formatting favors.

• Removing resource limits on Solaris 10

  How should one remove all potential artificial resource limitations for a process? I just saw a case where a server application consumed resources so that some limitation was hit. The other shells into the same server etc were all extremely slow (waiting for something to free up for them; ie. prstat starting 5 minutes). It wasn't CPU/memory related problem so I think it has got something to do with ulimits / projects. Already managed to set the maximum open files to 500 000 and it helped a little bit. However there is something else and I can not figure out what resource is maxed out. I can get some in-house administrator probably to check this but I would like to understand how I could make sure there shouldn't be any limitations! If you think I am going the wrong way (would be better to figure out what limitation should be specfically tuned etc) please feel free to point me to the correct way. I know technical stuff - it's just Solaris 10 that is giving me headache :/
