  • Migrating Ruby Site from EngineYard to Heroku

    As part of a larger project I've been tasked with migrating some existing Ruby on Rails sites (built with an old version of refinerycms 0.9.6.34, at least that's the version listed in the Gemfile included with the source). I don't normally work with Ruby so I'm at a bit of a loss. The previous developers simply handed over the latest git dump as well as a db dump. I'm working first with trying to get the site up working locally on an Ubuntu 11.10 local machine before pushing up to at test Heroku install. If it's possible to just push directly to Heroku with the files they gave, then I can try that, but it's my understanding I need to get everything working and then use Heroku's tools to deploy. The previous devs said they're using ruby 1.8.7 so in Ubuntu I've done the following: aptitude install ruby1.8 ruby1.8-dev ruby1.8-full aptitude install rubygems1.8 I've restored the database and in the config directory I've made changes to the database.yml to point to the restored database.   • Unity 3D game idea for a fun and teaching game

    I have been brainstorming for months now on writing a unity 3D game for my final year computer science project. I have been learning unity for sometime now but comming up with a concept is quite difficult than i thought. The game has to be really fun and also educational, one that the school and community can benefit from. I am thinking about a third person game. where the player runs round in an enviroment, picks up coins and earn points. This alone wouldn't earn me points and I have been trying to find new ideas of my own and all over the net but to no avail. Hopefully you guys can help me out with an idea, and how to make the lecturers appreciate the game and also make kids wanna play play it for a reason. Thanks.

Afterall, it is just .NET code right? And it’s just a CAS policy, so why not make that tempting little tweet, and well – all I wanna do is call web services! Ummmm ..   DON’T DO IT!   Yes I know it’s just .NET code! But Microsoft has spent a great deal of time, resources, and thoughts in crafting up the boundary of what a sandbox solution can do, and what it cannot do. Soon as you make that tiny little tweak to allow calling web services, you just opened a bunch of security holes in your SharePoint installation.     Of course one big pro is the amount of syntactic sugar leading to shorter code in a lot of cases. On http://jashkenas.github.com/coffee-script/ there are impressive examples. On the other hand I have doubts that these examples represent code of complex real world applications. In my code for instance I never add functions to bare objects but rather to their prototypes. Moreover the prototype feature is hidden from the user, suggesting classical OOP rather than idiomatic Javascript. The array comprehension example would look in my code probably like this: cubes = $.map(list, math.cube); // which is 8 characters less using jQuery...

    Today is the first day of the SQLPASS 2012 and I will be soon posting SQL Server 2012 experience over here. Today when I landed in Seattle, I got the nostalgia feeling. I used to stay in the USA. I stayed here for more than 7 years – I studied here and I worked in USA. I had lots of friends in Seattle when I used to stay in the USA. I always wanted to visit Seattle because it is THE place. I remember once I purchased a ticket to travel to Seattle through Priceline (well it was the cheapest option and I was a student) but could not fly because of an interesting issue. I used to be Teaching Assistant of an advanced course and the professor asked me to build a pop-quiz for the course. I unfortunately had to cancel the trip. Before I returned to India – I pretty much covered every city existed in my list to must visit, except one – Seattle. It was so interesting that I never made it to Seattle even though I wanted to visit, when I was in USA. After that one time I never got a chance to travel to Seattle. After a few years I also returned to India for good. Once on Television I saw “Sleepless in Seattle” movie playing and I immediately changed the channel as it reminded me that I never made it to Seattle before. However, destiny has its own way to handle decisions. After I returned to India – I visited Seattle total of 5 times and this is my 6th visit to Seattle in less than 3 years. I was here for 3 previous SQLPASS events – 2009, 2010, and 2011 as well two Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Summit in 2009 and 2010. During these five trips I tried to catch up with all of my all friends but I realize that time has its own way of doing things. Many moved out of Seattle and many were too busy revive the old friendship but there were few who always make a point to meet me when I travel to the city. During the course of my visits I have made few fantastic new friends – Rick Morelan (Joes 2 Pros) and Greg Lynch. Every time I meet them I feel that I know them for years. I think city of Seattle has played very important part in our relationship that I got these fantastic friends. SQLPASS is the event where I find all of my SQL Friends and I look for this event for an entire year. This year’s my goal is to meet as many as new friends I can meet.   • Should I reorder partitions regarding performance

    I have in principal 3 big partitions on my Netbook. One Windows, one for shared files, one for Ubuntu. I recently find out (using hdparm) the the hardisk seems to have much better perfomance on the first 2/3 (~ 60MB/s) than on the last 1/3 (~ 40MB/s). I am thinking to delete the second partition and create new partitions for "swap" and / directly after Windows. Does this effort make sense? I also wanna upgrade to 10.4/10.10 but keep the option to go back to the old system, so maybe I install ubuntu completely in a/this new partition?

But now: sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth Returns error: update-alternatives: error: cannot stat file '/lib/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth': Too many levels of symbolic links I just wanna revert back to the vanilla 12.04 LTS Plymouth splash.     If you have a plethora of old hardware laying around, especially motherboard and expansion cards, this obsolete-hardware-to-table hack is just the ticket for your office or geek cave. The table’s design is simple. They took a regular coffee table, affixed old mother boards to it and then, over the motherboards and elevated by acrylic standoffs, they put a heavy sheet of acrylic to serve as the table top.     i'm running ubuntu 12.04.3 x86 desktop in my corporation environment. I join the corp domain by Likewise open. But when I ping another pc, say hostname is pc-test, "ping pc-test" or "ping pc-test.domain.name" returns slow interval (about 5 seconds) but the ping value is below 1 ms. When I use "ping -n pc-test", everything works well. So I conclude this is about reverse DNS issue. how to fix this issue? many thanks! Edit: In my understanding, reverse DNS issue is related to DNS server or Wins server, not only an ubuntu issue, is this right? if I wanna fix this issue as much as possible on ubuntu but not on network servers, what to do?

    I am a graphics designer. How long would it take to become fluent in Objective-c for Mac and/or iPhone app development, from no programming background? I want to quit my day job as a designer. I really don't wanna work anymore cause I don't want to have a boss. I can be a writer, or I can become a app developer. Developing mini applications & games sounds excellent to me. That's really what I want to do :) I'm a patient person and I will do whatever it takes to learn & become a good developer. Should I take any courses about app development, or can I learn on my own? Any ideas, tips?

  • Usb Live No hardisk

    Ok so i own a toshiba laptop , and the thing is my hdd went bad,but i had a usb flash drive with i live cd Ubuntu on it. Now i dont have and hdd plugged in my laptop im only with a flashdrive. My question is how much memory does this live cd support cause my flash drive is 32 gigs and after about 1.5 gigs of downloads a screen shows up and tells me that i dont have enough space left. the other thing is i dont have money to get a hdd right now so i wanna use this flash drive for now but can i somehow customize the cd thru the live edition so i could have programs that i need after restarts i tried with Customization Live Cd but when i run it , it stops and in my terminal it says could not execute not enough space. So if anyone can tell me what can i do with this problem im having with space on my live Usb ubuntu.

The question was closed! Obviously it isn't and I'm going to explain why if needed but it can be seen: the question is unique, is the case/story of a young who have SPECIFIC experience with C++ , VB and Assembler and asking, knowing this specifications an answer (It is not a general question like "hey I'm young can I do the programmer??") Let me know your opinion! do you think this question should or should not be closed? And let's think about also the people not only the "data" and "cases covered" ... do you think this is important too? or is better to keep a place where people doesn't count?

  • WPF properties memory management

    I'm trying to build binding system similar to the one that is used in WPF and I ran into some memory leaking problems, so here comes my question - how is memory managed in WPF property system? From what I know in WPF values of DependencyProperties are stored in external containers - what I wanna know is how are they collected when DependencyObject dies? Simplest solution would be to store them is some weak reference dictionary - but here comes the main problem I ran into - when there is a listener on property that needs reference to its (this property) parent it holds it (the parent) alive (when value of weak reference dictionary points somewhere, even indirectly, to key - it can't be collected). How is it avoided in WPF without the need of using weak references everywhere?

    I made a script which swaps two game objects on click.But the script won't work because the objects are actualy clones of the original prefab.   • Unable to install on a Samsung 305v5a

    Have used Ubuntu for years now. Bought a Samsung 305v5a-so2 laptop yesterday. It runs an AMD A8 quadcore. I have a CD of 10.04 and as I am not clear about whether to install 32 or 64 bit I thought I would run the trial of ubuntu from the cd to see it. After about 30m started getting Authentification Failure messages. Squashfs-error Unable to read fragment cash entry Then a zillion Buffer Logical error messages like 17,000+ Should I go download 11.10, in 32bit or go and try the 64bit. Really don't want to screw the new laptop already but aint gonna wanna work with w7 either. Thanks for any help

  • Commandline shortcut for current directory similar to ~ for home directory?

    When i use the cp or move command in a terminal window, i'm currently with bash in a certain folder like this. NES@server:~/Desktop/dir1$ And now i wanna copy a file from here ~/anotherdir/dir2 into the current chosen folder in bash (dir1) i would use the command cp ~/anotherdir/dir2/file ~/Desktop/dir1 does a shortcut string exist to refer to the current chosen directory? So that in this example i don't have to provide the full path to the target dir, but the command knows it should use the current chosen directory in bash? i.e. as ~ stands for the home directory?
