• West Palm Beach .Net User Group May 25th User Group Meeting Update

  Just returned from the West Palm Beach .Net User Group Meeting featuring Shervin Shakibi who spoke to us about What’s New in Silverlight 4.0.  It was a great talk where the audience was fully engaged with Shervin as he spoke about and demonstrated the various new features of Silverlight 4.0. We enjoyed free pizza and soda as well as a free raffle with every attendee leaving home with a freebie.   For our June Meeting, Don Demsak, Microsoft MVP, will be speaking to us about WCF Data Services.  We will continue to have free pizza and a free raffle with great prizes, so hope to see you all there. • Free SQL Server training? Now you’re talking.

  SQL Server user groups are everywhere, literally all over the globe there are SQL Server professionals meeting on a regular basis, sharing ideas, solving problems, learning about how to do new stuff and new ways to do old stuff and it’s all for free. I don’t have detailed figures but of all the SQL Server professionals there are only a small number of them attend these user groups. Those people are the people that are taking the time and making then effort to make themselves better at their chosen trade, more employable and having a good time. For free. I don’t know why but there are many people that don’t seem to want to be the best they can be. Some of you enlightened people that do already attend could be doing more though. Have you ever spoken at  your group? Not just in the break while you have a mouthful of pizza and a drink in your hand but had the attention of the whole group listen to you speak. It doesn’t need to be a full hour, it doesn’t need to be some obscure deeply technical demonstration of SQL Server internals, just a few minutes on something that you do that might help other people with their daily work. A neat process that helps you get from Problem A to Solution B. There is no need to get concerned that becoming a speaker means that you suddenly have to know more than anyone else in the room. This is you talking about something that you experienced. What you did, what you would repeat, what you might do differently next time. No one in the audience can pick you up on a technicality. If someone comes out with a great idea that you hadn’t thought of, say “That’s a great idea, I didn’t think of that while we had the problem on our hands. I’ll try to remember that for next time”. If someone is looking to show you up for picking the wrong decision (and this, in my experience, is very uncommon indeed) then you simply give a reply like “Well, at the time we chose that option. Perhaps another time then we would tackle things differently but we were happy with how our solution worked”. It’s sharing things like this that makes user groups have a real value, talking about how you coped with or averted a disaster, a handy little section of code or using a tool in a particular way that you take for granted that might, just might, be something that other people haven’t thought of that solves a problem or saves some time for them. At the next meeting you might get the same benefit from a different person and so it goes on. As individuals benefits so the community benefits. For free. Things I encourage you to do; If you are a chapter or user group leader; encourage someone from your group who has never spoken before to start speaking. If you are a chapter or user group attendee that hasn’t spoken before; speak for at least 5 minutes on something related to SQL Server at any group meeting. If you don’t currently attend a user group; please go along to you nearest one when they are meeting next and invest in yourself and your future. Now that developer has given only the ftp username and password to my friend. He asks me to update his website. • Web developer has become uncooperative, what should we do to rescue our site? [closed]

  What can an individual or a company do if the web designer who has designed their website becomes completely uncooperative? In our case He refuses to meet with us for discussions. He refuses to give us training on the effective use and management of the website he has designed for us (and has been paid in full for) despite this training being part of the original contract. Last year he disappeared for a number of months ,refused to answer emails or phobe calls and was totally unavailable to help us He refuses to give us the details of the hosting of our website. We have totally lost faith in this arrogant and unreasonable guy and would like to break off all relationships with him but ,it appears, he's got us over a barell

• How can you become a competent web application security expert without breaking the law?

  I find this to be equivalent to undercover police officers who join a gang, do drugs and break the law as a last resort in order to enforce it. To be a competent security expert, I feel hacking has to be a constant hands-on effort. Yet, that requires finding exploits, testing them on live applications, and being able to demonstrate those exploits with confidence. For those that consider themselves "experts" in Web application security, what did you do to learn the art without actually breaking the law? Or, is this the gray area that nobody likes to talk about because you have to bend the law to its limits?

• Coding a web browser on Windows using a layout engine?

  I've never attempted anything like this before but what I want to do is code a browser for Windows. I know that I can use the web-browser control that Microsoft has released, but I'm interested in seeing how the problem is solved from a lower level. So I want to know what layout engine I should be looking at? Or is a layout engine the best way to go? I've been looking at WebKit, but it seems rather Mac-centric, so I'm wondering if there are any more practical one's for windows? Has Microsoft released the source code for their webbrowser winforms control in the .Net framework? That would be dependent on the CLR anyway, I suppose? Any suggestions?

• Contract-Popup at Login

  I want to give my notebook to guests of my little Hotel as an extra service. I love the Ubuntu guest-account and I think that this is the best possible way to help my guests get free internet-access. I found out how to "design" their user-accounts with /etc/skel, but unfortunately I have no clue, how to show them a small introduction to the system and a kind of user-agreement "contract" when they login. I read of xmessage, but this is too minimalistic. I'd like to implement some pictures. Does anyone have any idea of how to make this possible? Would it be possible that the user is logged out automatically if he rejects the user-agreement? Thank you so much in advance, Steve.

• Iterating through controls on a Windows Form

  I seem to have some weird issue going on that I am sure will turn out to be a simple thing. I have a Windows Form and on the form I have 1 panel called MainPanel and inside MainPanel, I got another panel with a button inside and a label that is inside MainPanel, but not in the second panel. 2 controls. What I am trying to do is copy all the controls inside MainPanel over to another panel object. I am using the following C# code to do this: GUIPanel gp = new GUIPanel(); foreach (System.Windows.Forms.Control ctrl in gp.Controls["MainPanel"].Controls) { m_OptionsControl.Controls.Add(ctrl); } When I run this code, it copies over the panel with the button, but not the label. What's even more odd is when I set a breakpoint and run it through the debugger, and I type "?gp.Controls["MainPanel"].Controls.Count" in the immediate window, it returns 2, just like it should. However, when stepping through the code, it only executes the foreach loop once. What am I missing here?

  I need to save and restore settings for specific controls on a form. I loop thru all controls and return the one whose name matches the one I want, like so: private static Control GetControlByName(string name, Control.ControlCollection Controls) { Control thisControl = null; foreach (Control c in Controls) { if (c.Name == name) { thisControl = c; break; } if (c.Controls.Count > 0) { thisControl = GetControlByName(name, c.Controls); if (thisControl != null) { break; } } } return thisControl; } From this I can determine the type of control and therefore the property that should be / has been stored. This works well unless the control is one of the ToolStrip family which has been added to a toolstrip. e.g. this.toolStrip.Items.AddRange(new System.Windows.Forms.ToolStripItem[] { this.lblUsername, // ToolStripLabel this.toolStripSeparator1, this.cbxCompany}); // ToolStripComboBox In this case I can see the control I'm interested in (cbxCompany) when debugging, but the name property has no value so the code does not match to it. • Horizontally align rows in multiple tables using web user control

  I need to align rows in different tables that are layed out horizontally. I'd prefer to put the html code in a single web user control so I can create as many instances of that control as I want and lay them out horizontally. The problem is, the text in the rows needs to wrap. So some rows may expand vertically and some may not (see the example below). When that happens, the rows in the other tables aren't aligned horizontally. I know I can accomplish all this by using a single table, but that would mean I'd have to duplicate the name, address and phone html code instead of dynamically creating new instances of my user control (in reality there are many more fields than this, but I'm keeping it simple). Is there any way to do this whether with div's, tables or something else? Here's the problem: Mary Jane's address field expands 2 lines, causing her phone field to not align properly with John's and Bob's. Name: John Doe Name: Mary Jane Name: Bob Smith Address: 123 broadway Address: Some really long address Address: Short address Phone: 123-456 that takes up multiple lines Phone: 111-2222 Phone: 456-789 I'm not restricted in any way how to do this (other than using asp.net), but I'd prefer to use a single web control that I instantiate X times at design time (in this example, it's 3 times). Seems like: Jboss-web.xml specifies the security domain (which can be found in login-config.xml) web.xml specifies what the security level is I don't understand what happens when jboss-web.xml specifies a weak security domain. Ie: one that cannot do what web.xml specifies. What happens then?

• web.config inheritance problem

  Hello everyone, I am having an issue when I try and prevent inhertiance from a parent web.config down to a child specifically related to the node. My parent web.config contains about a dozen appSettings values while my child web.config contains none. Now, I originally began wrapping around only my system.net, web, etc nodes however when I ran my child application I recieved the following error: The configuration section 'appSettings' cannot be read because it is missing a section declaration I really wasn't sure what this meant and a google search didn't yield me any decent results so I attempted to move the location node to also encompass the field in my parent web.config but to no avail. My child web.config is pretty vanilla so I am not sure what the problem is. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. • how to choose a web framework and javascript library?

  I've been procrastinating learning some framework for web apps w/ some library for AJAX, something like django with prototype, or turbogears with mootools, or zeta components with dojo, grok, jquery, symfony... The point is to spend some of my spare time, have "fun" and create cool stuff that hopefully is some useful. I think maybe I wouldn't like something like GWT or pyjamas because I wouldn't like to "get married" with some technology, I want to keep my freedom to add another javascript library, and so on. I didn't decide even the language yet, but I think I'd prefer python. PHP could be fine if there is some framework that is nice enough. Besides that, I don't even know where to start. I don't feel like learning a framework to then realize there is something that I cannot comfortably do, switch to another framework then find that a third framework has something really cool, etc. And the same goes for javascript libraries. So, some guidance would be really appreciated. I don't really know why are so many options available and what do they aim for, I guess some of them focus on some aspects and some on others, but I just want to make cool and nice apps that I can easily maintain, without spending too much time on coding or learning and avoiding the "trapped in the framework" feeling, when doing something is awfully complicated (or even impossible) with compared with the rest of things or doing that same thing on a different framework. I guess in the end I'll go for django and jquery since they are the most widely used options, afaik, but if I was going for the most widely used options I guess I should choose Java or PHP (I don't really like Java for my spare time, but php is not so bad), so I preferred to ask first. I think the question has to consider both, framework and library, since sometimes they are coupled. I think this is the place to ask this kind of things, sorry if not, and thank you.

• A-2-Z web hosting on Amazon AWS

  All, I am studying web dvp, and one of my classes is project-based. We have to build a functional site that demonstrate our understanding of: HTML, CSS, Javascript, php, MySQL, And potentially Ajax or some other web component. For the project, we can use a local server using WampServer and basically build the site entirely on our laptop. If I have time, I would like to create a real site, and I thought it would be a good way to familiarize myself with Amazon's AWS services. So if I purchase a domain name, can I rely on AWS to host the site from A-to-Z? I understand I can use AWS to host content, the database, and do the background computations, if needed. What else do I need and what are the parts that AWS cannot help me with? Second, is there good documentation for a beginner to navigate AWS and learn how to use it (either on Amazon, or some 3rd party sites, or even a good book, as long as is up to date). The ideal documentation would be a tutorial on creating a web site from a-to-z on AWS, as detailed as possible. As you can guess, I have limited understanding of the IT issues. I have 0 Linux or sysadmin experience, but this is a good opportunity to change that. I hope you can help me. Thank you, JDelage PS: Please keep the answers AWS-specific. • Samba Server Make Multiple User Permissions Profiles

  I have a Samba file server running, and I was wondering how I could make multiple user accounts that have different permissions. For example, at the moment I have a user, smbusr, but when I ssh to the share, I can read, write, execute, and even navigate out of the samba directory and do stuff on the actual computer. This is bad because I want to be able to give out my IP so friends/family can use the server, but I don't want them to be able to do just anything. I want to lock the user in the samba share directory(and all the sub directories). Eventually I would like several profiles such as (smbusr_R, smbusr_RW, smbguest_R, smbguest_RW). I also have a second question related to this, is SSH the best method to connect from other unix machines? What about VPN? Or simply mounting like this: mount -t ext3 -o user=username //ipaddr/share /mnt/mountpoint Is that mounting command above the same thing as a vpn? This is really confusing me. Thanks for the help guys, let me know if you need to see any files, or need anymore information.

• Discount Multilingual Day in the Life of User Experience

  Super article by the WikiMedia Foundation engineering folks about Designing for the Multilingual Web using the Wikipedia Universal Language Selector user interface as an example. Great ideas about tools that are available, as well as covering the basics of wireframing (mockups), prototyping, and user testing. Lots of inspiration there for developers and builders of apps who want to ensure their user experience (UX) really delivers for a global audience. Check out the use of the Firefox-based Pencil, how to translate your mockups, and how to perform remote user testing using Google+ Hangouts. Paul Giner demonstrates how to translate mockups. A little clunky and homespun in parts (I would prefer if tools such as Pencil or Balsamiq MockUps, and so on, could roundtrip directly from SVG to XLIFF for example, and Pencil doesn't work yet with the latest versions for Firefox) and I am not sure how it can really scales to enterprise-level use. However, the UX methodology is basically sound, and reinforces the importance of designing and testing in more that one language. The most powerful message for me is that you do not need special resources, training or expensive tools to deliver great-looking usable apps if you're a developer. Definitely worth considering if you're building apps out there in the community.

  5 sites I commonly vist at home: Google.com Gmail.com Linkedin.com Capella.edu Codeplex.com All of the top 5 sites I visit at home use JavaScript and is applied in various ways for various reasons. Gmail and Google make use of Ajax to retrieve information without the user having to call another page. In addition, all 5 of the websites use JavaScript to enhance a user's experience. Examples of this can be found in content rotation on Capella's main site and the displaying and hiding of specific content sections from within our course room. Codeplex uses Ajax and JavaScript to show dynamic content on its homepage and allow users to page through the data. I think there use of JavaScript is well placed and enhances the viewing experience of the user because it reduces the amount of interaction a user has to perform for them to obtain information they are looking to see. I have used JavaScript in various ways. One of the most memorable ways was to enable an HTML table to be able to have its rows paged and sorted based on the values in each table row.
