• Setting a non-standard proxy

  I am behind a proxy which requires users to login during the first connection with a username and password with a HTML form. Thus, it is not handled with usual http://username:[email protected] and any attempt to access the internet from this setting falls into the login form. How could I automatically login to the proxy? In linux, what manages proxy stuffs when a command tries to access the internet? Thank you.

• Why is the VGA Cable attached to new monitors

  When opening a new monitor I am amazed that the VGA cable is always attached. Even with new high end monitors that include Display Port and DVI cables the old VGA cable is always attached while the others are just left in the box. What is the reasoning behind attaching a cable in the first place and why the VGA cable in particular?

• Question on date and timezone in Linux

  Hi , I did the date command and it gave the following output root@localhost:~$ date Thu Dec 30 14:19:47 UTC 2010 Then i modified the date using date -s command whichn gave the following output root@localhost:~$ date -s "12/30/2010 JST 14:19:47" Thu Dec 30 05:19:47 UTC 2010 I noticed that the time changed to 9 hours behind UTC time to show exactly the JST time. But timezone as you can see is still showing UTC. Why is it showing the correct time and incorrect timezone? Thanks

• Why do server administrators not open up IMAP on an Exchange server?

  In a corporate environment running Exchange and Outlook clients connecting to it why do server administrators not allow IMAP to be turned on for those that would like to connect to the server using IMAP? I'm assuming the simple answer is port attacks and please excuse my naivety but does Exchange not suffer the same problems or is it because its behind the firewall and within the corporate network?

• Mysql replication, Slow resyncing of slave after an error

  I have a slave that got an error about a months or so ago and got way behind the master. I fixed the error and now playing catchup with the master but its going very slowly. Its going at 1.3x real time. I was using less that 10% of the db resources when these writes were first happening so the speed of the server shouldn't be an issue. Is there any settings I can switch to help the slave catch up with the master?

• Use same url externally as internally

  If I have a web server on my home network I can connect to it from work with http://my.external.ip/whatever/ (assuming NAT and forwarding). Naturally I have a bookmark in my browser that points to http://my.external.ip/whatever/ however when I use that bookmark on my home computer (also behind NAT) the link does not work because my firewall blocks it. (firewall is a old'ish Dlink) What is the best way to fix this issue?

• Windows XP: Make Google Chrome's minimize, restore and close buttons match other programs?

  I like the way Google Chrome puts the tabs above the address bar, but I don't like the way the minimize, restore, close buttons are a different shape to every other program's. It means that if I sit the mouse in the top corner and minimize everything, I find that I've restored Chrome, not minimized it. Is there any way to get these buttons to a normal shape and size? That's Firefox in front, looking normal, like every other program, and Chrome above and behind, with the buttons at an off-standard position and size.

• problem with zsh interactive shell

  When I use zsh in interactive mode, I get some glitches. This mainly happens when the command spills over onto a new line and I use backspace, with backspace leaving behind some glitches on the screen and moving the cursor to an odd position. It happens in a VT, in xterm and urxvt, although it is most noticeable with my chosen terminal, urxvt. When I use zsh as a login shell, it does not happen at all. What could be causing this?

• Is there a better IIS 7 bindings dialog?

  Some of my sites in IIS have 20-30 bindings and the bindings dialog box in IIS 7 is 4 lines, which makes editing bindings a real pain. Are there any replacements/upgrades for the dialog specifically? I realize behind the scenes it is just updating an XML file, but I would prefer not to directly edit the XML file or start writing a separate management application, if possible.

• What is the best way to change the replication scheme of 2 currently replicated slaves?

  I have MySQL replication set up in production as follows: DB1 - DB2 DB1 - BAK Where DB2 and BAK are slaves to DB1. All 3 servers are in sync (0 seconds behind the master) and have 30+ GB of data. I'd like to put the servers in a new master-slave configuration as follows: DB1 - DB2 - BAK What is the best way to change the master host on BAK? Is there a way to avoid having to stop the slave thread on DB2 and getting a mysqldump for BAK (a 5-6 hour processes) ?

  Hello all. I opened a file using Vim from MinGW's MSYS on Windows 7, and it crashed, and it's left behind a .filename.swp file which I cannot delete! I'm in the local admin group, and I tried following this, in an administrator command propmpt, and that didn't work. Nor did logging on as the local admin and performing the same actions. Any suggestions?

• How to get the best LINPACK result and conquer the Top500?

  Given a large Linux HPC cluster with hundreds/thousands of nodes. What are your best practices to get the best possible LINPACK benchmark (HPL) result to submit for the Top500 supercomputer list? To give you an idea what kind of answers I would appreciate here are some sub-questions (with links): How to you tune the parameters (N, NB, P, Q, memory-alignment, etc) for the HPL.dat file (without spending too much time trying each possible permutation - esp with large problem sizes N)? Are there any Top500 submission rules to be aware of? What is allowed, what isn't? Which MPI product, which version? Does it make a difference? Any special host order in your MPI machine file? Do you use CPU pinning? How to you configure your interconnect? Which interconnect? Which BLAS package do you use for which CPU model? (Intel MKL, AMD ACML, GotoBLAS2, etc.) How do you prepare for the big run (on all nodes)? Start with small runs on a subset of nodes and then scale up? Is it really necessary to run LINPACK with a big run on all of the nodes (or is extrapolation allowed)? How do you optimize for the latest Intel/AMD CPUs? Hyperthreading? NUMA? Is it worth it to recompile the software stack or do you use precompiled binaries? Which settings? Which compiler optimizations, which compiler? (What about profile-based compilation?) How to get the best result given only a limited amount of time to do the benchmark run? (You can block a huge cluster forever) How do you prepare the individual nodes (stopping system daemons, freeing memory, etc)? How do you deal with hardware faults (ruining a huge run)? Are there any must-read documents or websites about this topic? E.g. I would love to hear about some background stories of some of the current Top500 systems and how they did their LINPACK benchmark. I deliberately don't want to mention concrete hardware details or discuss hardware recommendations because I don't want to limit the answers. However, feel free to mention hints e.g. for specific CPU models.

• Easy management of multiple connections

  Hi, on a Windows 7 machine I need to switch back and forth two connections: the LAN connection (that works behind a proxy) and a wireless connection via a USB modem. This requires every time to activate / deactivate two connections in the manager and switch on / off the LAN settings. I don't think there is some way to keep two connections alive and specify which one to use based on the program, but my question is: is there a simple little utility that makes switching the connection one-click easy and fast? • OpenVPN multiple servers on the same subnet, high availability

  Hey everyone. Let me start by saying that my Linux experience isn't super awesome but I can usually find my way around things easily. Over at work we have an OpenVPN setup that's been due for some improvement for a while now. The main server (tap mode) runs in our office, behind a rather slow DSL connection. The main problem is that, since I'm usually out of the office, every time I want to access something on the virtual network I have to go through that server to get anywhere else. We have two servers up on 100 Mbit connections that we use for development and production purposes, about 3 more servers in the office (one of them behind a different T1 line for VOIP) and about two dozen clients who use the network on a daily basis from various locations. We've had situations where network routing (outside of our control) would not allow people to reach our main OpenVPN server whilst the other locations were connectable. Also any time someone outside the office wants to fetch something from any of the servers (say, a 500 MB code repository), a whopping 20 KB/s download speed is just unacceptable these days (did I mention slow DSL? ok). We had to implement traffic shaping on this server since maxing out this connection was fairly trivial. I had the thought of running two (or more) OpenVPN servers in the network. These would have to have the same subnet though, as our application relies on virtual network's IP addresses for some of its core functionality. The clients would also preferably retain the same IP addresses but that's not vital. For simplicity, lets call the current server office and the second server I'm setting up, cloud. Call the server on the T1 phone. This proved to be rather complex because as soon as I connect to cloud, I cannot see office. Any routes to a server that would go through office also do not work while I'm connected to cloud (no ping, nothing) and vice-versa. There's no rules for iptables that would be blocking the traffic either. Recently I came across this article on linuxjournal but the solution they provide seems to only cover the use of two servers and somewhat outdated (can't even find much documentation, their wiki is offline). They also state that adding more servers would be a complex task. Ideally I would like to keep the existing server office running the virtual network and also run the OpenVPN daemon on the cloud and phone servers (100 Mbit and very reliable connection, respectively) so that we're on safe ground in case of a hardware failure, DSL failure, etc. So, in essence, I'm looking for a highly available OpenVPN solution (fix, patch, hack, tweak, whatever you want to call it) that will accept connections on multiple hosts (2 or more) whilst keeping the same IP address subnet regardless of the server to which you connect to.   In evaluating a rewrite rule that redirects to a specific URL and say the rewrite condition is met, would it be possible to use HTTP_HOST as part of the URL to be redirected to? Example in question: RewriteRule .*\.(jpg|jpe?g|gif|png|bmp)$ http://%{HTTP_HOST}/no-leech.jpg [R,NC] The motive behind this question is a desire to create a single htaccess file that would match against an addon domain (on a shared hosting account) and an infinite amount of subdomains below it to prevent hotlinking of images.

  While shopping for an SSD I have noticed that some manufacturers promote their "Pro" models as the ones sporting ECC data protection. Those manufacturers do not mention ECC in their budget models descriptions. However, Wikipedia article on flash memory states that "NAND relies on ECC to compensate for bits that may spontaneously fail during normal device operation." So the question is does any SSD device use ECC behind the scenes for its normal operation and is that ECC "feature" just a marketing ploy?

  I have a Citrix Web Interface (as part of XenApp 6.0 on Windows Server 2008 R2) that is behind a NAT, I can access the web interface fine (via both SSL and standard port 80) but when I go to launch a application that connection is still being made over the server's internal IP address. How do I configure the web interface to default to the external IP address of the box instead of its internal LAN IP?

• System time is off in Fedora

  I have a desktop PC with Fedora, Ubuntu and Windows installed and grub used for multibooting. But time in Fedora is always 5 hours behind. If I change the time in Fedora, then Windows and Ubuntu will be 5 hours ahead of the current time. I don't understand how to fix it. Any ideas? All the timezone settings in Fedora, Ubuntu and Windows are the same.
