  • IE 6 dropdown selection area too narrow

    Hi, I have a dropdown menu with the width set to 142px however the selection area when you drop down the menu needs to be larger as it has text that exceeds this width. Firefox (and most modern browsers) is clever and extends the selection area to fit in this text. However IE 6 and unchecked newer versions of IE do not show this text and keep the selection area the same width as the dropdown unclicked. The problem lies here, how can I get IE to extend the selection area where you click the selection you want without increasing the width of the dropdown area with out the dropdown selection showing.   • Equivalent to produce field glow in other browsers?

    I was long using this to add a glow to focused fields, I accessed my page from Firefox for the first time and realized it doesn't work on it, and most likely not on explorer either. border: 1px solid #E68D29; outline-color: -webkit-focus-ring-color; outline-offset: -2px; outline-style: auto; outline-width: 5px; I had copy pasted it from another page so I'm not quite sure how it works. What is the equivalent for Firefox or Explorer? I mean how do I make a similar glow in other browsers? Thanks

  • Links in rounded boxes? In ALL browsers (yep included IE8)

    I tried maaaany script but every time I get stuck in something bad. My goal is to create rounded boxes for links. You can see an example of I'm talking about here in the read more link (effects not necessary). Very common I know, but I want to make it work in eeeevery browsers at least safari, FF, chrome and most important IE7+ (IE6 not necessary...). The script that took me closest to the solution is Cornerz but I can't fix a very bad issue on IE8. Does anybody knows a way to get rid of this or to achieve my goal?   • What characters are widely supported in CSS class names?

    As detailed here among other places, the only valid characters in a html/css class name is a-z, A-Z, 0-9, hyphen and underscore, and the first character should be a letter. But in practice, what characters are in fact supported by most browsers? More specifically, I wonder what browsers properly understands a slash (/) in a class name, and what browsers support class names starting with a number. I'm primarily interested in getting an answer for html rather than xhtml, in case there is a difference. Thank you.

    Hi, I'm curious what are some effects/downside of not putting an index.html file to your directories (e.g images). I know when an index file is not present to a directory, files inside that directory are no longer private and will be visible to the browsers when point (eg yoursite.com/images/). Aside from that what are some big effects to consider? and how to properly secure them. thanks!

    Is there any safe way to detect, on a web page, client side (JS), whether user has an Google/Yahoo/Live/? account? I know about some suspicious ways to do this by styling visited links and then sneaking on computed style attribute, but it's more of a hack, Mozilla and maybe other are planning to crack down on this, as it might be abused. But I need this to allow users more integration with their identity providers, like: Have a Google account? ~ load contacts for sharing from Google Contacts API Have an Yahoo account? ~ load contacts for sharing from Yahoo Contacts API none of the above? show no link I don't want to provide all these options to all visitors, would be nice if I can detect the account, and provide integration only in that case.

  • How does IE8 handle xml header.

    I was wondering where I can find some information how IE8 actually handles xml header... for example how is handling <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> different to <?xml version="1.0"?>. One other questions would be how FF handles those header. How is that different to IE8. I am almost 100% sure that they handle them differently but am still doing some research. /Marko

  • jQuery overlay not working in IE6, Opera

    Hi, I've been scratching my head for hours trying to figure this out. I have this page: http://173.203.72.190/default.aspx. On clicking 'Any Cuisine', a sort of overlay is supposed to open. It works fine in nearly all browsers except IE6 and Opera. In IE6 and Opera, the jQuery 'overlay' won't open. Anybody have any ideas why this might be?

  • Why does this page look different between IE, Firefox & Chrome

    In Firefox it looks just like I want it to look, in IE it looks "a bit weird", and in Chrome it's all twisted. What non-standard HTML I am using that makes it looks so different between browsers? Specifically, how can I fix the Chrome & IE versions to look more like Firefox? Note that Chrome only goes haywire if all or almost all columns have the yellow stickies. If one or two columns are empty, then Chrome displays the page just like Firefox. The full HTML is at this pastebin.

  • What's the current (as of April 2010) state of affairs regarding <object> vs <embed> in HTML?

    The age old question. <object> vs <embed>. From what I gather, <object> is the XHTML-compliant way of doing things, while <embed> is for legacy support. I'm currently building a Flash application that will contain a pre-made embedding code for users to copy and paste, and I'm wondering if it's feasible to simply dump the <embed> tag altogether. Which browsers would be unable to load my application if I gave my users an <object>-only embed code? Thanks :)

  • Are these Mozilla-specific CSS styles doing anything?

    I'm working with some CSS (from a Joomla template) like this: div#logo { -moz-background-clip: border; -moz-background-inline-policy: continuous; -moz-background-origin: padding; background: transparent url(../images/head.png) no-repeat scroll 0 0; ... } I've looked up some of those -moz- properties and they seem to be assigned their default values, and if I turn them off in Firebug nothing happens visibly. Would there be a reason to add them to a CSS file? Are they for an old version of Firefox perhaps?

  • Future of IE9: Opacity + Performance

    I just tried the IE9 "Second Internet Explorer Platform Preview" - which supports CSS opacity now. That's nice, but I tried it with one of my website prototypes, and it's quite slow when scrolling etc. Admittedly, the prototype uses hundreds of images with opacity != 1, but everything is snappy with current versions of Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera. Does anybody know, if there are plans for IE9 to become faster in this area? Even rumours about this would be interesting in this case.

    I am using a horizontal scroll for a page on my website ~ works great in FF but not in IE, how can i get it to work in IE? Is there a hack or something I can use to get it to scroll correctly in IE? Thx in advance!
