• How do I partition my Hard drive to install Kubuntu?

  I am a complete newbie to partitioning and I would like some guidance here. Can anyone explain what exactly I should be doing here? I am installing Kubuntu 12.04 on a currently Windows 7 laptop. My current Partitions say this: /dev/sda /dev/sda1 ntfs 104 MB 35 MB /dev/sda2 ntfs 319965 MB 87164 MB Basically, what I want is some guidance on what exactly to do here. All I want is a partition for my OS (Which will be Kubuntu 12.04) and a partition for all of my data. I also want to restart fresh with my hard drive, with only what I mentioned on here. I am installing Kubuntu from a flash drive (I set it up as a bootable device with Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.0.9), as I do not have any blank CDs/DVDs to burn to. What should I name my partitions? What should I set the type as? What size do they need to be? Edit: My hard drive is 320GB. Just looked it up in my BIOS. This computer will mainly be used for internet browsing and overall just messing around with the Linux OS.

• Is looking for code examples constantly a sign of a bad developer?

  I am a comp sci student with several years of experience in C and C++, and for the last few years I've been constantly working with Java/Objective C doing app dev and now I have switched to web dev and am mainly focused on ruby on rails and I came to the realization that (as with app dev, really) I reference other code wayyyy too much. I constantly google functionality for lots of things I imagine I should be able to do from scratch and it's really cracked my confidence a bit. Basic fundamentals are not an issue, I hate to use this as an example but I can run through javabat in both java/python at a sprint - obviously not an accomplishment and but what I mean to say is I have a strong base for the fundamentals I think? I know what I need to use typically but reference syntax constantly. Would love some advice and input on this, as it has been holding me back pretty solidly in terms of looking for work in this field even though I'm finishing my degree. My main reason for asking is not really about employment, but more that I don't want to be the only guy at a hackathon not hammering out nonstop code and sitting there with 20 google/github tabs open, and I have refrained from attending any due to a slight lack of confidence... Is a person a bad developer by constantly looking to code examples for moderate to complex tasks?

• how do I uninstall old kernel options listed in Grub2? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Is there a way to remove/hide old kernel versions? I installed Ubuntu Tweak in Ubuntu 11.10, went to Janitor, and selected and removed old kernels that appeared there (3.0.0-12). Now, the only installed linux-image that appears as 'Installed' in SPM is the most recent one (3.0.0-13), which is the one I want. It did not however eliminate the kernel listing in Grub 2. At boot: However, at boot, in Grub-2, the following options still appear: 3.0.0-13-generic 3.0.0-13-generic (recovery mode) 3.0.0-12 (generic) (on /dev/sde5) 3.0.0-12 (generic (recovery mode) (on /dev/sde5) And, in Terminal, when I change directory (cd) to /boot, and then list (ls), I get the following listed kernels: 3.0.0-13 2.6.38-12 2.6.38-8 (al There is no change when I sudo update-grub in Terminal 1) what is /dev/sde5, and where is it located in the file system, so i can delete it? 2) why the differences between what appears as installed in SPM, what appears at boot in Grub2, and what shows when I list the contents of Grub2 in Terminal? Ultimately, I simply want to remove the 3.0.0-12 kernel options at boot in Grub2. How do I best and simplest do that? • Install Ubuntu side by side with Windows

  I'm trying to setup both Windows 7 and Ubuntu 14.04 Desktop on the same machine. I've partitioned the disk into 3 parts, so that I can have Windows Ubuntu Shared Partition for Files I've installed Windows 7 on the first partition (which created a small partition of 100MB for boot), so now I have 4 partitions on the disk which is all it can take. Now I am installing Ubuntu, and it's asking me whether I want to: Install Ubuntu inside Windows 7 Replace Windows 7 with Ubuntu (No!) Something else I want the Ubuntu installation to go into the partition that I prepared for it. Should I choose "Something else"? If I do so -- will I be able to choose which OS to load at boot? Can anyone explain how "Ubuntu inside Windows" work? it says that it will allow me to choose which OS to load at boot, which is desired. UPDATE: When choosing "Something else" I see also an option for Device for Boot Loader Installation: /dev/sda -- the ssd disk itself /dev/sda1 -- the Windows 7 loader (100MB partition) /dev/sda4 -- which is one of the other partitions Which one should I choose there? TIA!

• Documents stored on separate internal drive, Ubuntu doesn't notice on startup

  My machine has Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS running side-by-side on a single hard drive with GRUB bootloader, each with 500 GB storage. I keep my personal documents on a separate 1TB hard drive so they remain isolated from any changes I make to the OS drive, but when Ubuntu starts it does not seem to notice my documents drive. While I've installed and worked with Ubuntu 12.04 Server x32 before, using it as a desktop OS is new to me. I use my documents drive for all of my personal data, including wallpapers and music, so it is imperative that Ubuntu recognize it on startup. Concerning the two specific examples: Ubuntu loads with the default blue-colored desktop instead of my desired picture of the spectacular Carina galaxy. When I right-click the desktop and select "Change Desktop Background", it wakes up from its amnesia and loads the proper background. As for my music, Rhythmbox defaults to an empty library upon reboot, forcing me to reload the settings manually each time. This gets quite tedious because I certainly can't work to my full potential without my music. The second thing I would like to address is making Ubuntu point the documents directories in ~ to their appropriate counterparts on the 1TB documents drive. I realize that this question is not new, but when I create the symbolical links, they established themselves inside the directories and did not convert the directories themselves into symbolical links. I also prefer not to move the files themselves from their current location on the 1TB drive. I believe this would also help the Rhythmbox library problem as well considering it's a default directory for the music player. • How to make the internal subwoofer work on an Asus G73JW?

  I have an Asus G73JW laptop which has an internal subwoofer built-in. Currently, the system detects the internal speakers as a 2.0 system (or I can change do 4.0 is the only other option). I found a bug report here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/673051 which discusses the bug and according to them a fix was sent upstream back at the end of 2010. I would have thought this would have made it into 12.04 but I guess not? I tried following the link given at the very bottom to install the latest ALSA drivers, here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules however I keep running into an error when trying to install: sudo apt-get install linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r) Reading package lists... • Hard drive clicking noise on Acer AO722

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 on an Acer Aspire One 722. Whenever I'm on battery power I get a clicking sound from my hard drive every 5 seconds or so (this does not happen when the laptop is plugged in). I'm dual booting with Windows 7 and I don't get the clicking sound in Windows. The clicking sound stops when I run the command:sudo hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda Also, according to:sudo smartctl -H /dev/sda my hard drive is healthy. Is this clicking sound something I can just ignore? Or is it a serious problem and will it eventually damage my computer? If so, how would I fix it? I have tried adding hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda to my /etc/rc.local file, but I still run into the clicking problem if my computer boots while plugged in and is then unplugged. Also, I'm finding this fix to be unreliable. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. Is this a good solution and is there a better way of doing this? Also, would running my laptop with a -B value of 254 have any negative effects? (I read somewhere about a lower level protecting the hard drive from bumps)

• SQL SERVER – Mirroring Configured Without Domain – The server network address TCP://SQLServerName:50

  Regular readers of my blog will be aware of my friend who called me few days ago with very a funny SQL Problem SQL SERVER – SSMS Query Command(s) completed successfully without ANY Results. This time, it did not take long before he called me up with another interesting problem, although the issue he was facing this time was not that interesting and also very specific to him, however, he insisted me to share with all of you. Let us understand his situation at first. My friend is preparing for DBA exam Exam 70-450: PRO: Designing, Optimizing and Maintaining a Database Server Infrastructure using Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and for the same, he was trying to set up replication on his local laptop. He had installed two different instances of SQL Server on his computer and every time when he started the mirroring, it failed with common error message. The server network address “TCP://SQLServer:5023? cannot be reached or does not exist. Check the network address name and that the ports for the local and remote endpoints are operational. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 1418) Well, before he contacted me, he searched online and checked my article written on the error in mirroring. However, he tried all the four suggestions, but it did not solve his problem. He called me at a reasonable time of late evening (unlike last time, which was midnight!). I even tried all the seven different suggestions myself, as previously proposed in my article; however, none of them worked. While looking at closely at services, I noticed something very simple. He was running all the instances on ‘Network Services’. In fact, his computer was a stand-alone computer. There was no network at all. Also, there was no domain or any other advance network concepts implemented. I just changed services from ‘Network Services’ to ‘Local System’ as his SQL Server was running on his local system and there were no network services. This prompted to restart the services. As this was not the production server and his development machine, we restarted the services on the laptop (do not restart services on production server without proper planning). After changing the ‘services log on’ account to localsystem, when he attempted to reconfigure the mirroring it worked right away. As usually in production server, proper domains are configured and advance network concepts are implemented I had never faced this type of problem earlier. My friend insisted to post this solution to his situation, wherein there was no domain configured and setting up mirroring was throwing an error. According to him, this is bound to help people, like him, who are preparing for certification using single system. • Hosting a website on Heroku.... I know how to, but im running into problems!

  I'm starting to learn more on the back-end scale of programing. Recently I started up Heroku for the second or third time. This time I actually installed the Git update to my Mac and installed Heroku in the terminal. I wanted to upload a static html site with the sinatra gem. Everything worked out fine inside the terminal, though I added sinatra after I got everything working and the file with the site hooked up to Heroku. In my logs I did see that I was missing the sinatra gem, so I installed it. My site contains both the proper app.rb and config.ru files. I have nothing showing up online. Just a blank screen! Contacting Heroku on this problem has been very difficult. • High CPU usage with Team Speak 3.0.0-rc2

  The CPU usage is always around 40 percent. I use push-to-talk and I had uninstalled pulseaudio. Now I use Alsa. I don't even have to connect to a Server. By simply starting TS the cpu usage goes up 40 percent and stays there. The CPU usage of 3.0.0-rc1 [Build: 14468] is constantly 14 percent. UPDATE: Thanks to nickguletskii's link I googled for "alsa cpu usage" (without quotes) and it brought me to a forum. A user wrote that by directly selecting the hardware with "plughw:x.x" won't impact the performance of the system. I have selected it in the TS 3 configuration and it worked. But this solution is not optimal because now no other program can access the sound output. If you need any further information or my question is unclear than please tell me.

• Hosting a website on Heroku.... I know how to, but im running into problems!

  I'm starting to learn more on the back-end scale of programing. Recently I started up Heroku for the second or third time. This time I actually installed the Git update to my Mac and installed Heroku in the terminal. I wanted to upload a static html site with the Sinatra gem. Everything worked out fine inside the terminal, though I added Sinatra after I got everything working and the file with the site hooked up to Heroku. In my logs I did see that I was missing the Sinatra gem, so I installed it. My site contains both the proper app.rb and config.ru files. I have nothing showing up online. Just a blank screen! Contacting Heroku on this problem has been very difficult. By contrast, my live production site on shared hosting is reasonably quick. For me the goal with a local WAMP stack was to develop offline and send completed work to the live production site. I liked ZWAMP because it didn't require adjustments to User Access Control or other permissions. I've looked at Drupal Acquia Development Stack but found this too restrictive: only one site instance/doc root can be installed. I've looked at other DAMP stacks and heard reports of them being slow. My local development machine that I am running the WAMP stack on is a Dual Core 2.6Ghz hyperthreaded Intel i7, 4Gb RAM, 7200rpm hard disk, running Windows 64bit professional. • Visual Studio Express 2012 debug mode doesn't work

  I have a project in Visual Studio that I have been working on for a while, and I have used the debugger extensively. Recently I changed some settings and I have lost the ability to stop the program and step through code. I can't figure out what I had changed that might have affected this. If I put a breakpoint in my code and try to have the program stop there, it doesn't. The break point shows up white with a red outline. If I hover the mouse over it, it says "The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No executable code of the debugger's target code type is associated with this line. Possible causes include: conditional compilation, compiler optimizations, or the target architecture of this line is not supported by the current debugger code type." I know for a fact that the program executes the code where the breakpoint is because I put the breakpoint in the beginning of the InitializeComponent method. The program displays the window fine, but does not stop at the breakpoint. Yes, I am running in debug mode. It seems as though there is a disconnect between the compiled code and the source code displayed. Does anyone know what that would be, or know which compiler settings I should check to re-enable debugging? • Economic modelling - Resources for valuing goods

  tl;dr: What economic/computer science books would you suggest for learning about economic valuation of goods and simulations thereof? I'm looking to create an economic model for a game based on goods created procedurally. Every natural resource and produced good would be procedurally generated, with certain goods being assigned certain uses. Fakesium might be used for the production of Weapon A and produced from Fakesium factories which use Dilithium and Widgets as reagents, where Widgets are also the product of Foo and Bar The problem is not creating the resources and their various production utlities - but getting the game's AI empires and merchants to correctly value the goods according to their scarcity, utility and production costs. I need to create a simulation of goods which allows the various game factions to assign a common value denominator (credits) to each resource, depending on how much its worth to that empire. I see the simulation being something like: "I have a high requirement for Weapon A. Since I don't have much of Fakesium, which is needed for Weapon A - I must have a high demand for Fakesium. If I can acquire Fakesium, devalue it. If not, increase its value - and also increase demand for Dilithium and Widgets too." This is very naive - because it may be much much cheaper for the empire to simply purchase Dilithium and Widgets directly rather than purchasing Fakesium, for example. Another example is two resources might allow the creation of Weapon A (Fakesium and Lieron), so we'd need to consider that. I've been scratching my head over the problem and it keeps growing. By the time the player joins the world, I'd expect enough iterations of this process to have occurred that prices would have largely normalised - and would then only trigger rarely to compensate for major changes (eg. if the player blows up the world's only Foo mine!) Could anyone suggest resources (books, largely) which outline this style of modelling, preferably in the context of simulations? Since this problem would never occur outside fantasy worlds, I figured this is probably the most likely place to find people who have encountered similar problems and I'm sure there's people who know of good places for Games Developers to start looking at less specific economic theory too. Additionally, does anyone know of any developers with blogs whose games or research applications perform similar modelling?
