• How do I get Graphics drivers / bluetooth / card reader working on an Acer Aspire V3-571G?

  A couple of days ago I bought an Acer Aspire V3-571G laptop without a system installed on it. The only thing that was there was Linux Linpus. I created a bootable CD with Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit - I read that my processor was 64 bit and that it might be a good configuration for my gear (I'm not especially fluent with all the computer stuff, still trying to learn) and replaced Linpus with Ubuntu. Everything seemed to work fine, but there're few exceptions to that which came pass my way. My bluetooth doesn't work. It seems to be switched on, but when I check my system settings the button is actually off, and I can't drag it 'perminently' to the 'on' position. Tried a couple of commands I found on the net, none of them helped and there was no word whatsoever in my BIOS settings about enabling bluetooth. My card reader has some serious problems with copying more than one file at a time. I tried to put some music on my phone through a MicroSD card adapter (because my bluetooth doesn't work) and it got stuck every single time I copied an album on it.   An alternative way to request read reciepts Sometime or other we use messaging namespaces like System.Net.Mail or System.Web.Mail to send emails from our applications. When we would need to include headers to request delivery or return reciepts (often called as Message Disposition Notifications) we lock ourselves to the limitation that not all email servers/email clients can satisfy this. We can enhance this border a little now, thanks to a new innovation I discovered from Gawab. It embeds a small invisible image of 1x1 dimension and the image source reads as recieptimg.php?id=2323425324. When this image is requested by the web browser or email client, the serverside handler does a smart mapping based on the ID to indicate that the message was read. We call them as 'Web Bugs'. But wait it is not a fool proof solution since spammers misuse this technique to confirm activeness of an email address and most of the email clients suppress inline images for security reasons. I just thought anyway would share this observation for the benefit of others.

• What use is a Business Logic Layer (BLL)?

  In reading up on good practice for database applications I've frequently come across advocates of so-called "business logic layers" and I'm trying to decide if it's best for my project to use one (it's a small personal project). My issue lies in the fact that I can't think of anything for the BLL to do that the DAL can't already handle (executing queries and mapping results to objects), so my BLL just calls the DAL without doing anything itself. Maybe I'm wrong about exactly what the DAL should be doing too. But regardless, what sorts of functionality should be expected of a BLL in a database management application?

One of the main initiatives has been an Excel to OWB ‘one click ETL’ utility, which looks to have had a fair amount of code added, there is an example but its kinda light on documentation, but does look like it covers quite a lot.   Hi all! Today we would like to introduce you just another feature from upcoming NetBeans 7.3. It's about generating setters, constructors and type hints of their parameters. For years, you can use Insert Code action to generate setters, getters, constructors and such. Nothing new. But from NetBeans 7.3 you can generate Fluent Setters! What does it mean? Simply that $this is returned from a generated setter. This is how it looks like: But that's not everything :) As you know, before a method is generated, you have to choose a field, which will be associated with that method (in case of constructors, you choose fileds which should be initialized by that constructor). And from NetBeans 7.3, type hints are generated automatically for these parameters! But only if a proper PHPDoc is used in a corresponding field declaration, of course. Here is how it looks like. • Ubuntu 13.10 No Sound

  I was running 13.04 since last monday and just today i upgraded to 13.10, in both of these version i have not managed to get my sound working. I have gone into alsamixer and disabled auto mute and the volumes are up. However if somebody thinks they can help me fix this i will gladly follow any steps. • What is the practical use of IBOs / degenerate vertex in OpenGL?

  Vertices in 3D models CAN get cut in the process of optimizing 3D geometry, (degenerate vertices) by 3D graphics software (Blender, ...) when exporting because they aren't needed when reusing a vertex for multiple triangles. (In the current case 3D data is exported from Blender as .ply and read by a simple application that displays the 3D model) Every vertex has a few attributes like position, color, normal, tangent,... But the data for each vertex that is cut through the vertex sharing is lost and is missing in the vertex shader. Modern shader techniques like Bump or Normal mapping require normals/tangents per vertex which are also cut. To use complex shader techniques IBOs must not be used? Or is there a way to use IBOs and retain the data per vertex that was origionally lost?

• Custom mesh format - yea or nay?

  In the process of writing my game prototype, I have found the OBJ format to be insufficient for my needs - it does not support any sort of animation, it doesn't support triangle strips (I'm targeting my ancient hardware). MD2 wouldn't fit the bill because it doesn't have support for named model pieces. MD3 would probably work, but like OBJ, it doesn't have support for triangle strips. Considering the limitations of the formats above, I've come to the conclusion that it may be necessary to write my own format to accommodate my requirements, but that feels like reinventing the wheel. So, I need a format which can specify indexed tri-strips, supports textures, UV-mapping, collision data, can have multiple named segments and supports animations (have I forgotten anything?). Is there any format like that which already exists, or do I have to write my own?

  Recently, I had to create a program to send messages between two winforms executable. I used a tool with simple built-in functionalities to prevent having to figure out all the ins and outs of this vast quantity of protocols that exist. But now, I'm ready to learn more about the internals difference between each of theses protocols. I googled a couple of them but it would be greatly appreciate to have a good reference book that gives me a clean idea of how each protocol works and what are the pros and cons in a couple of context. Here is a list of nice protocols that I found: Shared memory TCP List item Named Pipe File Mapping Mailslots MSMQ (Microsoft Queue Solution) WCF I know that all of these protocols are not specific to a language, it would be nice if example could be in .net. Any help with testing is welcome! Fixed problem with SSRS keep-alive cookies. Keep-alive cookies are issued every time a report is opened during a browser session. Many people don't restart their browsers and in my case, Chrome doesn't get rid of the cookie session data on close - had to manually delete them for the reports to start working again. I added KeepSessionAlive control settings to manage SSRS keep-alive behavior. It is set to false by default to fix Bad Request 400: Request Too Long issue. You can find usage example in Fluent.cshtml. Fixed the bug when ReportViewer Control parameters was not parsed when ShowParameterPrompts parameter had not been set. Changed public static MvcReportViewerIframe MvcReportViewer method to use IEnumerable<KeyValuePair<string, object>> reportParameters instead of simple object. The reason is users reported that they mostly use multiple report parameters’ values. Added support for SSRS hosted on Windows Azure. Users should set MvcReportViewer.IsAzureSSRS property to true in Web.config to use Windows Azure authentication. I do not have Windows Azure SSRS and build the code using http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg552871.aspx#Authentication article. It would be nice if somebody from community tested the change or provided me a test report on Windows Azure for testing purposes.

  If you read through the first four parts of this series on data source security, you should be an expert on this focus area.  There is one more small topic to cover related to WebLogic Resource permissions.  After that comes the test, I mean example, to see with a real set of configuration parameters what the results are with some concrete values. WebLogic Resource Permissions All of the discussion so far has been about database credentials that are (eventually) used on the database side.  WLS has resource credentials to control what WLS users are allowed to access JDBC resources.  These can be defined on the Policies tab on the Security tab associated with the data source.  There are four permissions: “reserve” (get a new connection), “admin”, “shrink”, and reset (plus the all-inclusive “ALL”); we will focus on “reserve” here because we are talking about getting connections.  By default, JDBC resource permissions are completely open – anyone can do anything.  As soon as you add one policy for a permission, then all other users are restricted.  For example, if I add a policy so that “weblogic” can reserve a connection, then all other users will fail to reserve connections unless they are also explicitly added.  The validation is done for WLS user credentials only, not database user credentials.  Configuration of resources in general is described at “Create policies for resource instances” http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E24329_01/apirefs.1211/e24401/taskhelp/security/CreatePoliciesForResourceInstances.html.  This feature can be very useful to restrict what code and users can get to your database. There are the three use cases: API Use database credentials User for permission checking getConnection() True or false Current WLS user getConnection(user,password) False User/password from API getConnection(user,password) True Current WLS user If a simple getConnection() is used or database credentials are enabled, the current user that is authenticated to the WLS system is checked. If database credentials are not enabled, then the user and password on the API are used. Example The following is an actual example of the interactions between identity-based-connection-pooling-enabled, oracle-proxy-session, and use-database-credentials. On the database side, the following objects are configured.- Database users scott; jdbcqa; jdbcqa3- Permission for proxy: alter user jdbcqa3 grant connect through jdbcqa;- Permission for proxy: alter user jdbcqa grant connect through jdbcqa; The following WebLogic Data Source objects are configured.- Users weblogic, wluser- Credential mapping “weblogic” to “scott”- Credential mapping "wluser" to "jdbcqa3"- Data source descriptor configured with user “jdbcqa”- All tests are run with Set Client ID set to true (more about that below).- All tests are run with oracle-proxy-session set to false (more about that below). If this was not an Oracle thin driver, the one case with the non-null Proxy in the above table would throw an exception because proxy session is only supported, implicitly or explicitly, with the Oracle thin driver. When oracle-proxy-session is set to true, the only cases that will pass (with a proxy of "jdbcqa") are the following.1. Setting use-database-credentials to true and doing getConnection(jdbcqa3,…) or getConnection().2. Setting use-database-credentials to false and doing getConnection(wluser, …) or getConnection(). Summary There are many options to choose from for data source security.  Considerations include the number and volatility of WLS and Database users, the granularity of data access, the depth of the security identity (property on the connection or a real user), performance, coordination of various components in the software stack, and driver capabilities.  Now that you have the big picture (remember that table in part 1), you can make a more informed choice.

• Freebsd Box hangs on boot loader

  I have a freebsd box that seems to not want to boot past the boot loader. It wont go past the initial boot loader phase and just lists the version number for the boot loader(btx loader). It hangs there. I am not a fluent freebsd admin and decent at command line, however I can tell clearly it wont get past and boot past the disk. Loaded up rescue cd, mounted the drive. Couldnt get fsck going without seg faulting How do i get this fixed? I have a live cd.... just curious which route to take.

  when i try adding this movie file to pitivie i get the error as follows (i can play the file in mplayer just fine tho): Problem: An internal error occurred while analyzing this file: Could not find GStreamer caps mapping for FFmpeg codec 'h264', and you are using an external libavcodec. This is most likely due to a packaging problem and/or libavcodec having been upgraded to a version that is not compatible with this version of gstreamer-ffmpeg. Make sure your gstreamer-ffmpeg and libavcodec packages come from the same source/repository. Extra information: gstffmpegdec.c(1336): gst_ffmpegdec_negotiate (): /GstPipeline:Discoverer-file:///media/Data/pitivi/taw2.mkv/GstDecodeBin2:dbin/ffdec_h264:ffdec_h2645 Also, my system language is English, but regional format is set to German. mplayer installed in German, I want it in English tho... • Procedural Planets, Heightmaps and Textures

  I am currently working on an OpenGL procedural planet generator. I hope to use it for a space RPG, that will not allow players to go down to the surface of a planet so I have ignored anything ROAM related. At the moment I am drawing a cube with VBOs and mapping onto a sphere. I am familiar with most fractal heightmap generating techniques and have already implemented my own version of midpoint displacement (not that useful in this case I know). My question is, what is the best way to procedurally generate the heightmap. I have looked at libnoise which allows me to make tilable heightmaps/textures, but as far as I can see I would need to generate a net like this. Leaving the tiling obvious. Could anyone advise me on the best route to take? Any input would be much appreciated.

• Windows Phone 8 Announcement

  As if the Surface announcement on Monday wasn’t exciting enough, today Microsoft announce that Windows Phone 8 will be coming this fall.  That itself is great news, but the features coming were like confetti flying in all different directions.  Given this speed I couldn’t capture every feature they covered.  A summary of what I did capture is listed below starting with their eight main features. Common Core The first thing that they covered is that Windows Phone 8 will share a core OS with Windows 8.  It will also run natively on multiple cores.  They mentioned that they have run it on up to 64 cores to this point.  The phones as you might expect will at least start as dual core.  If you remember there were metrics saying that Windows Phone 7 performed operations faster on a single core than other platforms did with dual cores.  The metrics they showed here indicate that Windows Phone 8 runs faster on comparable dual core hardware than other platforms. New Screen Resolutions Screen resolution has never been an issue for me, but it has been a criticism of Windows Phone 7 in the media.  Windows Phone 8 will supports three screen resolutions: WVGA 800 x 480, WXGA 1280 x 768, and 720 1280x720.  Hopefully this makes pixel counters a little happier. MicroSD Support This was one of my pet peeves when I got my Samsung Focus. With Windows Phone 8 the operating system will support adding MicroSD cards after initial setup.  Of course this is dependent on the hardware company on implementing it, but I think we have seen that even feature phone manufacturers have not had a problem supporting this in the past. NFC NFC has been an anticipated feature for some time.  What Microsoft showed today included the fact that they didn’t just want it to be for the phone.  There is cross platform NFC functionality between Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8.  The demos , while possibly a bit fanciful, showed would could be achieved even in a retail environment.  We are getting closer and closer to a Minority Report world with these technologies. Wallet Windows Phone 8 isn’t the first platform to have a wallet concept.  What they have done to differentiate themselves is to make it sot that it is not dependent on a SIM type chip like other platforms.  They have also expanded the concept beyond just banks to other types of credits such as airline miles. Nokia Mapping People have been envious of the Lumia phones having the Nokia mapping software.  Now all Windows Phone 8 devices will use NavTeq data and will have the capability to run in an offline fashion.  This is a major step forward from the Bing “touch for the next turn” maps. IT Administration The lack of features for enterprise administration and deployment was a complaint even before the Windows Phone 7 was released.  With the Windows Phone 8 release such features as Bitlocker and Secure boot will be baked into the OS. We will also have the ability to privately sign and distribute applications. Changing Start Screen Joe Belfiore made a big deal about this aspect of the new release.  Users will have more color themes available to them and the live tiles will be highly customizable. You will have the ability to resize and organize the tiles in a more dynamic way.  This allows for less important tiles or ones with less information to be made smaller.  And There Is More So what other tidbits came out of the presentation?  Later this summer the API for WP8 will be available.  There will be developer events coming to a city near you.  Another announcement of interest to developers is the ability to write applications at a native code level.  This is a boon for game developers and those who need highly efficient applications. As a topper on the cake there was mention of in app payment. On the consumer side we also found out that all updates will be available over the air.  Along with this came the fact that Microsoft will support all devices with updates for at least 18 month and you will be able to subscribe for early updates.  Update coming for Windows Phone 7.5 customers to WP7.8.  The main enhancement will be the new live tile features.  The big bonus is that the update will bypass the carriers.  I would assume though that you will be brought up to date with all previous patches that your carrier may not have released. • Rapid Application Development, good, bad or ugly?

  I have been working for such a shop for the past three years and I know deep down it cannot be like this everywhere. When I think of Rapid Application Development I immediately think programming without fore-thought. For example, when my company decides to come out with a new product, they don't do any type of relationship mapping, no ER diagrams, no round table discussions on expandability. No, the senior developer that ends up working on the product puts together a screen shot walk-through of the application to show to the client. Once the client signs off on the project work is underway by the senior developer. Now you have a senior developer (I use that term "senior" loosely) coding the application in under a week with no unit testing. Well I guess the good to this is it keeps programmers employed due to the enormous amount of unforeseen "features" in the newly created application. Have any of you dealt with a company like this? If you did how did you preserve your sanity?

• write to depth buffer while using multiple render targets

  Presently my engine is set up to use deferred shading. My pixel shader output struct is as follows: struct GBuffer { float4 Depth : DEPTH0; //depth render target float4 Normal : COLOR0; //normal render target float4 Diffuse : COLOR1; //diffuse render target float4 Specular : COLOR2; //specular render target }; This works fine for flat surfaces, but I'm trying to implement relief mapping which requires me to manually write to the depth buffer to get correct silhouettes. MSDN suggests doing what I'm already doing to output to my depth render target - however, this has no impact on z culling. I think it might be because XNA uses a different depth buffer for every RenderTarget2D. How can I address these depth buffers from the pixel shader?
