• Digg alternatives for blog and unpopular users? [closed]

  all. I'm struggling to build an [B]audience[/B] for [B]electronic blog[/B] . The blog is relatively new and has around 30 pages. The unique visitors I get are approximately [B]120 - daily[/B]. I know about directories, rss, comments and guest blogging, but is there other more effective strategy to build some quality audience? As I see nowadays there aren't enough materials in my country about this. What about digg and reddit? Everytime I post some link there: no traffic comes to me. Can you suggest me other digg/reddit/stumbleupon tactics to get followers or there are similar sites which would tend to give me some serious traffic.   I would like to set up a server similar to Google's. Their domain acts like a double domain, like you can use these URLS, "play.Google.com" or "apps.Google.com", to go to different sites.. For example, my domain would now be "my_domain.com" but i would like another one to be "domain2.my_domain.com". My question is,what is this officially called and how do i set it up? I'm not sure if you need two servers or just 1;

• How to get rid of spam that sends from clients own email address?

  I've Googled everywhere for a solution for this, but though the same issue appears to be happening to a lot of people, I havent found anything that helped. Several of my clients are receiving loads of spam emails with the senders email being their own. The emails subject line is: Environmental corporation searching for representatives worldwide. The emails are not being sent from any scripts in the sites and all the code appears clean. I have also updated the sites CMS. Would anyone know how to get round this issue? Any help is appreciated!

  For 6 years I'm working as web developer and I would like to finally create my own site. I thought I have everything needed: programming and administration skills, found a good designer, own servers and understanding how to operate site. But I've missed very important (or the most important) point: how do I find a subject for my site? My hobby and my work are the same: IT, but I don't want to create just another tech blog or news aggregator, I want something different. First I thought things like Google Trends or Google top 1000 could help, but I've got lost in thousands of options I can't see them all (I actually can, but it'll take at least a couple of month).   Bing has flagged some pages on a site I manage as malware, these have been looked at and looks like there was some malware at some point but it's now since been removed. It's also pointing to some pages which no longer exist saying there is malware on those. Is there anything specific I need to do to get Bing to stop trying to access the removed pages and also deflag the pages that have been fixed.

• host and share files in my hosting

  I currently have a domain+hosting with unlimited hosting space for our website. On the other hand, I use Dropbox to share our organizational files and photos between about 10 users. The thing is that sharing photos uses too much space for what a free Dropbox account offers. So I am thinking of taking advantage of my hosting space, but using FTP seems not to be ideal for users who are not too skilled with computers. In addition, it doesn't handle versions in case some user makes a mess of it. And using a public FTP to upload and giving them only download permission doesn't seem a good idea as I am only the CTO. So what I want is basically to implement a local Dropbox for a few users, but I'd prefer something that is not too complex to install/mantain. Thank you a lot.

  On the site I'm building, users can create tutorials. I want the users to be able to create tutorials on as many subjects as possible, but still have some preset categories. What's the best way to select these categories? The reason I don't just let users add keywords, and use these for categorization, is because users gain experience points in a certain subject when their tutorial is liked by someone, and in a similar way the Stack Exchange network does, create communities around these subjects. • Sitemaps showing twice in Webmaster Tools

  Within my Webmaster Tools account I'm able to able to view details about Sitemaps that are uploaded for websites I manage. For some reason each sitemap is listed twice with the exact same details under both "By me" and "All". Even sites that don't have a sitemap yet tell me I have 0 sitemaps, twice... I originally thought this might apply to sites that have multiple "Users & Site Owners" in Webmaster Tools, but it even happens for sites that only I manage. I've checked other user accounts to compare and this doesn't happen; they just get one set of tabs for By Me/All, not two. What could be causing this?

• Pointing a subdomain to Github Pages

  I set up an Octopress blog on Github Pages at myusername.github.com. I now want blog.myusername.me (which currently has a Wordpress blog set up) to point to this Octopress blog. So I followed the instructions here on setting up a custom domain: I ran echo 'blog.myusername.me' >> source/CNAME in my Octopress repository, and then ran rake generate and rake deploy to deploy it to Github. I went to Namecheap, and added a new CNAME under my myusername.me domain: "blog - myusername.github.com - CNAME". Waited a couple hours. However, now when I go to myusername.github.com, it redirects me to blog.myusername.me (which is my old Wordpress blog), which seems like the inverse of what I want. (Going to blog.myusername.me directly still shows my Wordpress blog.) I checked http://www.whatsmydns.net/#CNAME/blog.myusername.me and it seems like my DNS has propagated (myusername.github.com shows up in the right-hand side). Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

  Hi folks, is it better to have seperate country specific domains (which costs more money) or subdomains which define the country, for better SEO? eg. stackoverflow.com stackoverflow.com.au stackoverflow.co.uk vs stackoverflow.com au.stackoverflow.com uk.stackoverflow.com Assumption: int the search engine web master tools, each subdomain are associated to a country. eg. au.stackoverflow.com is associated to the country Australia. cheers! Update I understand that both methods do work, especially when i utilize the assumption, listed above. The question is about: Which method is better? Is there such a small SEO difference between them? Is the first method way way way better than the second with getting better SEO results? Update #2 A number of folks have suggested that the following is a good/better approach: stackoverflow.com/ stackoverflow.com/au stackoverflow.com/uk By adding a country specific iso code to the end of the url/the first folder of the domain can be recognised as the country. But a number of SEO mates have suggested that this is a valuable waste of folder level space. Er.. how can i explain. Ok, it's been suggested by some SEO experts that if the number of levels or folders in the domain exceeds 5 then the page drops dramatically in importance. Basically, you don't want to make it deep. As such, adding the country as the first level can be considered a waste, especially when it can be handled by the domain OR subdomain - hence the question :) So, any more thoughts on this? (Maybe SO is the wrong place to ask this question?)

  I've seen a few pages that have a section with "Popular searches for this page" and then have the search terms in a link pointing back to the same page (e.g. http://theenglishchillicompany.co.uk/the-complete-chilli-pepper-book-a-gardeners-guide-to-choosing-growing-preserving-and-cooking/) I assume they are doing it for SEO purposes (with more links to the page with the desired search terms). Does this make a difference? It seems strange that a link on page A to page A would be counted! Am I wrong?

  Well, the title says it all. It seems by CIRA (http://www.cira.ca/home-en/?lang=en) that I cannot, but the website doesn't make it explicitly clear how they check or anything like that... I have a domain name that I'd love to register for a business that will likely start in the US (where I'm based), but hopefully will grow globally (probably including Canada), but I want to build a brand around the domain name, and I do not want to get slammed by Canada yanking the domain name back if they discover I have no connection there. I only have experience with .com and .us domain names, so this is new territory for me. Any advice?

  So, i am currently writing something up for a college class. Problem is everything is hypothetical. I need some proof. I believe a first impression on a website is imperative so that people actually use it and in my case, buy your product or services as well. Basically I'm wondering has there been any studies that shows how a better web design will increase revenue for any kind of services? I don't just mean selling products like a T-shirt, but labor services as well. If someone wanted their computer fixed and searched for companies that can do so, will a first impression on the website help them make their decision to use your company?   I am using WordPress and in my post sidebar I have related posts which may be of interest to the user, however, I also have an excerpt of each article which is normally the first paragraph of the post it is linking to. For example: http://musicdune.com/reviews/album-review-ellie-goulding-lights If you do a Google Search for the first excerpt in the realted posts section from that page you get 4-5 results from my domain, http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=Strip+back+the+synths,+fast+beats+and+the+other+pop+elements,+and+you%E2%80%99re+left+with+something+elegant+and+soulful Is it recommended that I remove the excerpt from the related posts?

  I've seen this grid favicon show up on a lot of sites, most of which tend to be for scams like oxytocin accelerator, or make $300 a day posting links to Google type sites. My question is: what is this icon and where does it come from? Is there some organization whose goal is to make terrible websites like this and they associate them with this icon or does it belong to some server software that for some reason scammy sites like to use? Does anybody know the origins of this icon?

• Automated Post-billing Service/Solution

  I'm trying to find a solution or service that will allow for my company to automatically take a customer's credit card information via the web to keep on file and bill against based on how much they have used the services we provide. We need a service that will also handle the payment processing as well. Note that this is not recurring billing. The bill at the end of each month won't be the same. Presently, we are having to take a customer's credit card information over the phone and manually input it into Quickbooks, but this just doesn't work for scalability. We will still be manually invoicing the customers, but we need automated credit card acceptance and storage without the liabilities involved with storing it on our own server. Solutions that integrate with Wordpress would be a plus.

• Not using nofollow for UGC links

  My site contains many links that were user generated so I've added a rel=nofollow to them. I'm considering removing that tag at least partially, as these are most of my outgoing links and I've come to understand it isn't a good SEO sign to not have outgoing followed links. Although these are external sites, I have some data on the popularity and categorization of these sites. I'm trying to decide between two options: Removing the nofollow link for popular sites in most categories. Removing the nofollow for links that are in specific categories that represent the categorization I would like to achieve for my site. For example if this is a site about Basketball only remove the nofollow for links that are from sport sites. As these are both not exactly natural approaches, can this hurt me? Which option would you recommend?

I know this problem is due to the regex in the funnel step because I copied this entire goal except I replaced \invite(.*) with /invite/puppy-party When I hardcoded /invite/puppy-party the funnel worked as expected. Why is my funnel report not working with my original funnel step url parameter?
