  • How to allow only specific directories to use htaccess?

    Currently in apache2.conf I have AllowOverride all set for /var/www which simply allows htaccess for all the sites on the server (which is Ubuntu, 9.04). However, I'd rather only allow overrides in each site root directory and nothing else. In other words, /var/www/site1, /var/www/site2, etc. can have a htaccess, but all other directories including /var/www and /var/www/site1/content cannot. Is there a way to do this without having to write a rule for every site on the server?

  • Nginx Load Balancer 403 error

    I am trying to install nginx as a load balancer with apache backends, so that when I point my sites to the nginx server it serves up the content from the apache backend. I have the apache configuration set up correctly on both (i.e when I go to the site on the apache servers it works great) but when I use the nginx load balancer as the site I get 403 error. I have no idea why as it isn't even accessing any files on the server, thusly there aren't any files to be forbidden access to.   • How to "Create Your Own Search Provider" in IE9 and later?

    We used to be able to add a custom search provider in Internet Explorer to search any site that put search words in the query string (such as in StackExchange sites). The page where that it was done was http://www.ieaddons.com/gb/createsearch.aspx However, this page now redirects to a generic IE Gallery page. When I upgraded from IE8 to IE9, my StackOverflow provider carried over, but I recently reset my browser settings and am not able to get it back. Can we easily create a custom search provider?

  • Untar multiple files in different directories

    Hi, am trying to perform an update on multiple site that use an open source CMS but untaring a patch file in each sites httpdocs directory. My plan was to perform a find for the patch file then untar using the following command: find . -name "patchfile.tar.gz" -exec tar -xzvf {} \; -print but it doesnt seem to work successfully anyone have any ideas as to why not?     I can't figure out how to redirect / to index.html. I've gone through the threads on serverfault and I think I've tried every suggestion including: rewrite statements within location / index index.html at the server level, within location / and within static content moving node.js proxy statements to location ~ /i instead of within location / Obviously something is wrong somewhere else in my configuration.   • 403 Forbidden for web root on Apache on Mac OS X v10.7, but can access user directories

    When I access http://localhost/ I get 403 Forbidden, but if I access http://localhost/~username it serves up pages. Things I've tried: Checking error logs Swapping out with original httpd conf files Changing DocumentRoot to my user directory (after all that should work if I can access ~username) I've seen 30 plus Q&A sites that all point to people having trouble with user directories being forbidden. I have the opposite problem, and so I'm tearing my hair out here.

  • Some web pages won't download fully

    Some web pages won't download fully under any browser on any computer connected to the network. I have Internet access through a wireless modem/router (2 Mbps DSL connection, wireless reception is excellent). I use Opera and when I turn on Opera turbo the same sites download fully. I tried changing to some other dns (opendns, google dns), but it made no difference. What would you suggest I try? OS : Windows 7 64 bit

    I need to know how to automatically load a kernel module at startup on FC9. All the sites talk about adding an entry to /etc/modules.conf.... But that does not exist on FC9... Instead I have /etc/modprobe.d/ directory... Now, I suppose I need to put a file in this dir for my driver but I have no idea how to write this file... I just need "modprobe name" to be run...

  • How can I develop for Safari 6 without buying a mac?

    I've always found that just developing in Windows, and using Safari for Windows has been sufficient. However, Safari 6 has now been released, and I've got at least one user who has contacted me, saying he's experienced problems with one of my sites on his new ipad. The trouble is that Safari for Windows only goes up to 5.1.7. Do I have to go out and buy a new mac/ipad/iphone in order to test my code, or is there another way?

  • Apache + Passenger, requests not forwarded to Rails

    I'm trying to set up Apache + Passenger (mod_rails) and everything works fine except Apache won't forward requests to Rails. From my Apache log: File does not exist: /var/www/rails_apps/domain.com/public/controllerName My Rails app works fine with Mongrel and I also have some PHP/MySQL sites running fine. I have no .htaccess in my Rails app directory. What is going wrong? How could I troubleshoot this problem ?

  • html5 video and Windows 7N

    When using Windows 7N and embedded videos for YouTube and the like my users have been getting a black box. I tracked this down to when HTML5 is being used for rendering. Other than putting a bunch of sites in compatibility mode or installing the Windows Media Pack (which resolves this issue) is there another route I can take? My guess is it's only a single registry key or DLL that says 'I'm not HTML5 compatible' but I don't have any idea how to find it.

  • Why would my VPN connection work better than my direct connection?

    I have a new Windows 7 64bit laptop, which connects wirelessly to a ASDL router/modem. With my regular connection, page requests often time out - usually with form submissions. When I use the same connection to connect to a VPN (using OpenVPN) the requests seem to work fine. These are not requests to sites that are only available via the VPN - just regular websites I think this is specific to this new laptop (provided and set up by my employer) - other machines work fine.     I have a domain was registered at godaddy named http://mysite.com/. I logged into godaddy and I went to All Products Domains Domain Management. I clicked on the appropriate domain and it took me to the Domain Details page. I clicked Launch under DNS Manager and it took me to the Zone File Editor. I noticed that notify.mysite.com was pointing to an IP address pointing to a dead server, so I switched it to an operating server. Then I pinged the domain to see where it was pointing to and it was correctly pointing to the working server. So I copied the default configuration under sites-available: sudo cp default notify.mysite.com. And then I made some edits to it to have it point to a different document root to serve files at a different port: Listen 1740 Listen 64.135.xx.xxx:1740 #I also tried this as well: NameVirtualHost 64.135.xx.xxx:1740 <VirtualHost 64.135.xx.xxx:1740> ServerAdmin [email protected] ServerName notify.mysite.com DocumentRoot /var/www/test/public <Directory /var/www/test/public> Order allow,deny allow from all </Directory> ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/error.log LogLevel warn CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/access.log combined </VirtualHost> Then I enabled the virtual host. Then I went to the document root and added an index.html file with some text in it. Then I restarted apache. The restart gave no errors. Then I type the correct domain in URL: http://notify.mysite.com:1740/ and I get: Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to notify.mysite.com:1740 Somehow it took out all my other sites. Now even the ones that were responding on port 80 are no longe responding, even though I did not touch the virtual hosts for them. I get this message now: Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to mysite.com However, ping responds: ping mysite.com PING mysite.com (64.135.12.134): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 64.135.12.134: icmp_seq=0 ttl=49 time=20.839 ms 64 bytes from 64.135.12.134: icmp_seq=1 ttl=49 time=20.489 ms The result of telnet: $ telnet guarddoggps.com 80 Trying 64.135.12.134... telnet: connect to address 64.135.12.134: Connection refused telnet: Unable to connect to remote host

  • How do I mirror a MySQL database?

    I'm running two load balanced servers for one website, and I'd like the databases to be synchronized. Queries may be run on either of the two servers because they are both production sites, so the replication can't just work one way. It doesn't have to be in real-time, just fairly accurate so people don't notice a difference when they get switched to a different server.
