• Godaddy multiple domain problem

  I have godaddy deluxe plan and here is my problem: I have two domains for example: e1.com and e2.com. Both are hosted in same hosting plan. First I created a folder for each domain in the root folder and uploaded two web site but when I'm trying to run my sites, the URL for e1 always shows http://e1.com/e1/ and for e2 it shows http://e2.com/e2. Can I avoid showing e1 and e2 folder and only show http://e1.com and http://e2.com? Thank you.

• Good online auction software

  We are looking for some PHP-based auction software to start off with and I have have been scouring the net many times and am almost ready to purchase phpprobid as this seems to be the best and most feature rich of the lot; only bad things I have read is the lack of after-sales customer service. Others I have also looked at include: AJ Auction Software WeBid GuruScript Auction PHP Auction (enuuk). Many of them turn me off by having unprofessional sites which makes me think their software will be the same and be rubbish. Many also don't go into detail with the feature set like PHP Pro Bid does. So before we purchase PHP Pro Bid I was wondering if I missed something good? Thanks!

• Adobe flash plug-in crashed/needs permission in Chromium

  A couple of days ago I started to get these messages when trying to watch videos on Youtube and a couple of other sites. (Using Chromium browser) Normally starts by just seeing a black screen with Missing Plug-in faintly visible, but will also ask me to give permission to run both at top (yellow bar), and if I tell it to 'allow' it follows up with the white puzzle piece on black background requesting permission. Occasionally I have seen the message telling me the flash-player has crashed, too. Giving permission does not fix the problem. Have also navigated to 'about:plugins' and checked that Adobe flash is enabled and permitted. I have just done a fresh installation of Lubuntu 11.10 as a last resort but problem still not fixed.

• Installing PHP extensions on Linux

  Please bear with me; I'm a developer, not a server admin. My company wants to explore using Magento. They've handed me a pre-configured Linux server with apache and PHP installed, but when I try to run the Magento setup, it tells me that there are PHP extensions that need to be loaded. I can edit the php.ini file, but have no idea where to get the extensions or how to install them, and there's no one here who knows, either. Can anyone give me a hand? I need the PDO_MySQL, mcrypt, and GD extensions. I've searched and found sites that talk about downloading from the terminal and compiling code, but it's all way over my head. Is there an easy way to do this?

• Using rel=canonical and noindex in a 1-n partners enviroment

  We sell a whole site (domain, etc) to partners that create content that is shown together at the main site. What we want to achieve is that the main site copy is the original, but the one that is indexed is the partners copy. We want to do it this way so the search results point to the partner sites but never to the main site while the main site gets all the credit for the links. We are trying setting the main site article with a noindex, follow and a link to the partner article, and in the partner article we have a rel=canonical pointing to the main site article. Are we correct or the noindex at the main site will break the canonical reference?

  Are there any platforms / sites where people can share expertise in game development and where you can share (either payed or free) digital content (like images, sounds, animations but also frameworks or libraries) to be used in games? I'd also like the possibility to contact users and request specific pieces of content.   Ive heard allot recently about over optimisation regarding backlink anchor text ofsite. What ive heard from seomoz was sites most effected by the penguin update had over 60% of their backlinks anchor text the same, so google saw this is unnatural and penalized them. Which kind of makes sense as its not normal to have such high density on one word / phrase. If i where building links for a gastro pub in london. (this is purely hypothetical). The sort of keywords i would go after are "gastro pub in london" and "london gastro pub" If i where to mix up the anchor text by having: gastro pub gastro pub in london london gastro pub would this be seen as ok ? or would these all be seen as broad match keywords and counted as one phrase, making me fall foul of the penguin update ?

• Firefox ignore GTK theme for localhost stuff

  I know this is pretty much a duplicate of How can one make firefox ignore my GTK theme entirely?, but the answers on that one are no permanent solution. It works by launching firefox from the terminal. I would like to know a solution that works for every instance of firefox no matter how it was created. There is the possibility to edit the userContent.css file, but the settings you make randomly do not apply to some sites or in some situations, strangely, even with the !important added... I have a dark GTK theme and this results in some textboxes having a black background with black text with a userContent.css that has input, textarea { color: black !important; background-color: white !important; } Update I changed a setting in about:config from true to false, namely browser.display.use_system_colors. Everything appears normal and well now, for one exception: everything that runs on localhost. This includes PHPMyAdmin and a website I am making. I would like to know if there is a solution to this.

• Is there any reason to allow Yahoo! Slurp to crawl my site?

  I thought a year or more ago Yahoo! would be using another search engine for results, and no longer using their own Slurp bot. However, a couple of the sites I manage Yahoo! Slurp continues to crawl pages, and seems to ignore the Gone status code when returned (as it keeps coming back). Is there any reason why I wouldn't want to block Yahoo! Slurp via robots.txt or by IP (since it tends to ignore robots.txt in some cases anyways)? I've confirmed that when the bot does hit it is from Yahoo! IPs, so I believe this is a legit instance of the bot. Is Yahoo Search the same as Bing Search now? is a related question, but I don't think it completely answers whether one should add a new block of the bot.

• force users to activate account before using service?

  i am not sure if this is the correct SE site to post this, but ill go on... So at the moment i force my users to activate their account upon registration if they want to sign in. I see some decent sites let their users sign in and use their features even their account is not activated and just show a message on top of the page letting them know that their account is not yet activated and that you need to activate it. So which practice is best? Should i stick with that i have or change it?

• Is eCPMs dropping by about 50% in January a usual behavior on Google AdSense?

  So I just got semi-serious about running some AdSense sites over the past 6 months and the eCPM's have hovered between 1.38 and 1.42 [yes it's that close] when I look at the eCPM for each month. Obviously some deviation day to day but pretty damn close to a buck forty in aggregate. So far for January I am sitting at 0.80 for an eCPM. I know it's not a huge sample size but the daily pageviews are fairly consistent [actually a bit higher] than where they were in December. I am trying to justify this by thinking that somehow a lot of ad buyers buy inventory for the year and have to get setup to do another big buy now that it's a new calendar year but that thought isn't close to comforting. Is this happening to anyone else? EDIT: I run a lot of websites and the ratios of pageviews are about the same this month to last month but just to be clear the eCPM I posted is for 20 websites in a variety of niches, it doesn't accurately depict any one domain.

• full screen flash problems

  when i play flash videos from sites such as youtube, the videos initially play ok. However when the videos are full screened, a number of problems arise. Usually when the full screen button is first clicked, the video will take up the full screen, but will be frozen (however the video audio can still be heard). It can take several attempts to get the video to play in full screen. The video is also frozen if something triggers osd-notify (changing the volume, getting a new email etc.). Any ideas what might be going wrong?

• JS and CSS caching issue: possibly .htaccess related

  I've been using the HTML5 Boilerplate for some web projects for a while now and have noticed the following issue cropping up on some sites. My CSS and JS files, when loaded by the browser, are being renamed to things like: ce.52b8fd529e8142bdb6c4f9e7f55aaec0.modernizr-1,o7,omin,l.js …in the case of modernizr-1.7.min.js The pattern always seems to add ce. or cc. in front of the filename. I'm not sure what's causing this, and it's frustrating since when I make updates to those files, the same old cached file is being loaded. I have to explicitly call modernizr-1.7.min.js?v=2 or something similar to get it to re-cache. I'd like to scrap it altogether but it still happens even when .htaccess is empty. Any ideas? Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

• Integrating eBay and PayPal inventory

  Say I have an item for sale on eBay, and the same item for sale on another site via PayPal. Is it possible to have sales on one site reflected in the inventory for the other site, and vice-versa? In other words, if I have ten items for sale, and I buy one on either site, it should show that there are nine items left on both sites. I know that PayPal has an API for setting the inventory level of an item associated with a button. eBay also has an API for controlling an item's inventory. I'm wondering if anyone has tried to integrate them.

• 12.10 x64 - RTL8188CE - Intermittent/Slow Internet Connection

  I have to reset my internet connection often to get it to work. When it does work, it's definitely slower than when I'm on my Windows installation. My computer uses an RTL8188CE wireless card from Realtek. I'm running the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 12.10. Power management is not on. I've read on other sites that some people fixed the issue pertaining to this wireless card by downloading and installing the drivers from the Realtek site, but it seems as if that only helped people with 32-bit installations. Anyone have any luck with this specific wireless card?

• How to handle gender and sexual orientation on a form with select boxes more inclusively?

  The existing question and the answers for it are not satisfying when one wants to be more inclusive. Gender as Male, Female or No Answer works for some sites, but not others. Taking the view that Gender is not the same as Sex (assigned at birth based on bodily characteristics). Would it be more inclusive to include these two options: Transgender Male, Transgender Female? So instead would more inclusive options be the following? Gender Identity Male Female Transgender Male Transgender Female No Answer Sexual Orientation Straight Lesbian Gay Bisexual Asexual No Answer Gender Expression could also be included, but I think most people would find that too confusing (defined on GLAAD's website linked below) I'm going off what I've read on GLAAD's Transgender Glossary of Terms. • How to configure apache / php / postfix website emails when using vhosts?

  I have a LAMP webserver configured to serve multiple websites. Each virtual host has various PHP applications, mainly Wordpress. When users sign up to the Wordpress sites, email is sent by PHP through to postfix, and then on to the receiver. The problem is that postfix is identifying itself to the remote server with the contents of /etc/hostname, which is not a fully qualified domain name. Some mail servers reject this and the mail bounces. Additionally, the return path is being set to one of the vitual host domains, seemingly at random. I could set /etc/hostname to one of the website domain names, but then the emails from the other websites would have a wrong server in the headers, and this would not fix the return-path issue. Possibly related, apache2 says "could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name" on startup. How do I fix this so that each website can send email without revealing the other websites hosted on the server?

  So it’s been a really long time since I consistently blogged on my previous ASP.NET blog (and, let’s be honest, it wasn’t that consistent to begin with!)  With the mainstream use of microblogging sites like Facebook and Twitter, I’ve been able to post more frequent updates (http://www.facebook.com/scott.vanvliet & http://twitter.com/scottvanvliet) but haven’t really authored any good content lately. Well, I decided it’s time for me to try again! I’ve relocated my blog from the ASP.NET weblogs site to my new home here at http://geekswithblogs.net (thanks @jjulian and @jalexander!)  I hope to be posting musings on here about Silverlight, motion graphics, digital media, digital supply chain, and even personal/fun stuff.
