• Is a clear and replace more efficient than a loop checking all records?

  I have a C# List, that is filled from a database.. So far its only 1400 records, but I expect it to grow a LOT.. Routinely I do a check for new data on the entire list.. What I'm trying to figure out is this, is it faster to simply clear the List and reload all the data from the table, or would checking each record be faster.. Intuition tells me that the dump and load method would be faster, but I thought I should check first...

I'm used to using SVN-Monitor for Subversion. It runs in the task-bar and lets me know whenever something new has been checked in to the repository. Is there a similar solution for Mercurial ?

• Maintain case sensitivity when importing db into windows

  I have an export from a MYSQL database on a linux machine however when importing that database into MYSQL on windows all of the table names that were camel cased are now all lower case. The sql dump has the correct case in it but the importing via phpmyadmin seams to remove these. How can I import it and keep the case? Thanks

  I am using gnosis.xml.pickle to convert an object of my own class to xml. The object is initialized so that: self.logger = MyLogger() But when I do dump the object to a string I get an exception stating that the pickler encountered an unpickleable type . Is there a way to 'tag' the logger attribute so that pickler will know not to try and pickle that attribute?

  I recently changed my root password, but when I restart Ldap (openldap-2.2.13) I couldn't log in with Ldap users to any application that is on this server. in /var/log/httpd/ssl_error_log I can find a lot of error like: [Tue Jun 01 02:27:24 2010] [warn] [client 89.138.98.214] [26762] auth_ldap authenticate: user foo authentication failed; URI /svn-clients/clients/myclient/ [LDAP: ldap_simple_bind_s() failed][Can't contact LDAP server] I guess there is a linkage between user root and the Ldap configuration, I also changed the rootpw entry in slapd.conf, but this doesn't seem to make things better.

• Why is IE7 rendering these differently?

  I'm totally baffled as to why these 2 sites are rendering differently in IE7, even though the theme powering both is the same, they're both on WordPress 2.9.2... This one is okay: http://htm2wp.com/dev/svn This one has the sidebar appear at the bottom: svnsvadvisors.com/blog Meanwhile, they render the exact same in Chrome and Firefox. Anyone have any idea why this is happening? I think I may just be too close to the problem to see it.

• Hiernate's version values in Grails app

  Hi, looking at a database dump file, and I see many records in various tables with their version number set in values other than 0 (even 94 in one case). I understand it has to do with hibernate locking strategy, but my concern is that today is Sunday, and the site has almost no visitors so is: is this normal ?   On occasion, I find myself wanting to search the text of changelist descriptions in Perforce. There doesn't appear to be a way to do this in P4V. I can do it by redirecting the output of the changes command to a file... p4 changes -l > p4changes.txt ...(the -l switch tells it to dump the full text of the changelist descriptions) and then searching the file, but this is rather cumbersome. Has anyone found a better way?

• Does a Distributed Version Control System really have no centralised repository?

  It might seem a silly question, but how do you get a working drectory set up without a server to check out from? And how does a business keep a safe backed up copy of the repo? I assume then there must be a central repo... but then how exactly is it 'distributed'? I always thought of a server-client (SVN) Vs peer-2-peer (GIT) distinction, but I don't believe that can be correct unless tools like GIT are dependent on torrent-style technology?
