• Mapping of memory addresses to physical modules in Windows XP

  I plan to run 32-bit Windows XP on a workstation with dual processors, based on Intel's Nehalem microarchitecture, and triple channel RAM. Even though XP is limited to 4 GB of RAM, my understanding is that it will function with more than 4 GB installed, but will only expose 4 GB (or slightly less). My question is: Assuming that 6 GB of RAM is installed in six 1 GB modules, which physical 4 GB will Windows actually map into its address space? In particular: Will it use all six 1 GB modules, taking advantage of all memory channels? (My guess is yes, and that the mapping to individual modules within a group happens in hardware.) Will it map 2 GB of address space to each of the two NUMA nodes (as each processor has it's own memory interface), or will one processor get fast access to 3 GB of RAM, while the other only has 1 GB? • How to force a resolution in linux?

  I have a HP LP3065 that requires a dual link dvi cable to go up to 2560x1600 resolution. However, I do not have that cable, but I want to use 1920x1200 resolution. However, my nVidia Display Settings (also system display settings) will only go up to 1280x1024, which looks horribly pixelated on the 30". How do I force the 1920x1200 resolution? I tried adding the mode into my xorg.conf file, but it still would not take it. I know my vid card can do 1920x1200 since it works on the 24" monitor with the same dvi cable. • My Intel Core i3 frequently shuts down due to "Processor Thermal Trip error"

  My Desktop PC running Windows 7 on Intel Core i3 dual processor machine started shutting down during the boot process a couple of days ago. I left it alone for about 48 hours and tried again. The boot process informed me about Processor Thermal Trip as being the cause of boot failures and suggested a Windows recovery process. I went through the recovery process which completed without problems. The PC booted normally and Windows 7 worked as expected but after 10 minutes it again tripped and now whenever I start it, it shuts down during the boot process. What should I do next?... is there a boot menu / setup settings that needs to be adjusted to avoid it... Or is there a hardware problem (which seems unlikely as the machine occasionally boots perfectly )?

  I had on my laptop a dual system (Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7) and someway the partitions messed-up. Windows stopped from booting, I just got a blinking cursor, but Ubuntu worked fine. I tried to fix the windows boot (fixmbr, fixboot, bootsect /nt60 C:/....) but now grub was overwritten and I have no OS. Finally I formatted the hdd (low format), installed Windows, partition hdd with paragon partition manager and now I want to install Ubuntu, but Ubuntu sees an empty hdd, weird, can anyone tell me what can I do? EDIT: I have created: partition 1: 100MB ntfs - windows reserved (drive B) partition 2: 50GB ntfs win 7 (drive C) partition 3: 50GB ext3 linux partition 4: 'the rest' ntfs for data (drive E) (the swap i will create after)

• How can I set my wireless router to run on a time schedule?

  I have a Buffalo AirStation WZR-HP-G301NH I am able to access it's settings via 192.168.11.1 I'm connecting wirelessly with toshiba i686 laptop on Linux Mint Debian with service pack 3 and i686 dual core kernel This is just my home network but I know that there must be a way for large industries to shut their networks down or lock out their network access temporarily based on a time schedule, automatically. Like mon - fri the network provides access from 8am to 10pm and then automatically shuts down. I want this to affect all the computers accessing this netowork... basically all my families computers so that the internet just automatically shuts down at bedtime. I am running Linux Mint Debian and so maybe I need to make a cron job or something but does anyone know how big industries implement this and how I can do it privately? TIA

• What could cause my LAN Pings be greater than 100ms?

  I have 2 servers (Both: Windows Server 2008, Dual Xeon 2.8Ghz, 32GB RAM, 8 x 15k SAS Drives). One of them is a DC / Web server / Exchange Server, the other is a SQL Server (2008). I have a 48 port Netgear GS748T Gigabit switch. When I ping from server to server, I get ping times <1ms, great, but when I ping from a PC, I get varying pings from the occasional <1ms to 500ms!! If I log into either server and look at Task Manager, CPU usage peaks at 20%, memory usage is 100%, but I am led to believe this is normal as Exchange will just use as much as you have, and release it when requested. Network usage peaks at 1%. I really don't understand how the ping can vary that much. I know I am giving very little info, but this is all I know, I apologise, but can anyone help? In response to question, I have pinged by both IP address and hostname, no difference in ping times.

• Increase text size in Ubuntu 10.04 due to having large resolution/monitors

  I have 24" dual monitors with 1920x1080 resolution on both of them. Consequently the text appears so small. I use the following text-intensive applications frequently: Web browser (Google Chrome) IDE (Komodo) Terminal (Gnome Terminal) Email (Thunderbird) I can configure text size on IDE, Terminal and Email. But for Chrome, it is not a good idea to set proportional font size because often one wants to see the entire (not just proportional fonts) site to be zoomed. So I am asking: Is it possible to increase DPI in Ubuntu (much like on Windows) so as to increase the text size across all apps? OR Is it possible to set permanent 'zoom' in Google Chrome, using a third-party extension maybe? I am using Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)

• Ubuntu 10.04 install - frozen at splash, no errors

  Has anyone else come across this? After about as much of a fresh install as i can muster without buying new drives, and after walking through the amd64 alternate install with ease, and after a little 'pre-splash' screen where the orange dots under the (very sexy) new ubuntu logo blink away, I'm left with a vista of purple hues and logo plonked in the middle, with the dots not going anywhere. I was at this same position last night at 3 in the morning, left it lying overnight, and nothing had changed, so I'm pretty sure its frozen, the virtual terminals are not accessible, ie, c+a+F1 etc does nothing, but when i go in and inspect /var/log/* in the recovery console by booting off the installation cd, no errors, no complaints, no problems. I'm at my wits end and am just about ready to try anything. If this was on SO I'd be bountying, but if anyone can help you'll just have to cope with my thanks! Additional Details on my blog and my first attempt at asking for help Update: I can reasonably say it is not a hardware fault, as a full install of 9.10 with dual screen nvidia xinemara indicate that nothing is wonky

• How do I use Compiz on Linux to achieve what WinSplit revolution does on Windows?

  Hi there, I've used WinSplit Revolution for quite some time on Windows and have become attached to it. I'm now trying out a Linux OS (Ubuntu 10.04) and would really like to get the same functionality back again. After searching on the net I found a "grid" plugin (http://wiki.compiz.org/Plugins/Grid) for compiz which says that it was inspired by WinSplit revolution. I haven't installed the Grid plugin yet, because under the install section on that page, it says "Note that grid is now included in compiz so you're unlikely to need to fetch from git unless you've an old version of compiz", which would seem to suggest that the grid functionality has now been built into compiz somewhere. The thing is, I don't know where to find it in the CompizConfig Settings Manager nor how to set it up. All I want to have happen is that I get identical functionality to WinSplit revolution, where I press Ctrl + Alt + [some numpad key] to position a window on a screen and press Ctrl + Alt + [left or right arrow] to shift a window between dual screens.

• Windows 7 network performance tuning for LAN

  I want to tune Windows 7 TCP stack for speed in a LAN environment. Bit of background info: I've got a Citrix XenServer set up with Windows 2008R2, Windows 7 and Debian Lenny with Citrix kernel, Windows machines have Tools installed the iperf server process is running on different host, also Debian Lenny. The servers are otherwise idle, tests were repeated few times to confirm results. While testing with iperf 2008R2 can achieve around 600-700Mbps with no tuning what so ever but I can't find any guide or set of parameters that will make Windows 7 achieve anything over 150Mbps with no change in TCP window size using -w parameter to iperf. I tried using netsh autotuining to disabled, experimental, normal and highlyrestricted - no change. Changing congestionprovider doesn't do anything, just as rss and chimney. Setting all the available settings to same values as on Windows 2008R2 host doesn't help. To summarize: Windows 2008R2 default settings: 600-700Mbps Debian, default settings: 600Mbps Windows 7 default settings: 120Mbps Windows 7 default, iperf -w 65536: 400-500Mbps While the missing 400Mbps in performance I blame on crappy Realtek NIC in the XenServer host (I can do ~980Mbps from my laptop to the iperf server) it doesn't explain why Windows 7 can't achieve good performance without manually tuning window size at the application level. So, how to tune Windows 7?

• Divide bootloader from dualboot with Windows 7 and Windows XP

  My problem is the following: I have a dual boot running on my pc. I installed a programme called "Keriver", it automatically installs GRUB, too. When I start my PC, the first thing you see is GRUB. You can choose between "Boot normal" "Take snapshot with Keriver" "Boot Windows" If you select "Windows" or "Boot normal" it calls the Windows 7 Bootloader and it again shows a menu, where you can choose between XP and Win 7. Unfortunately for me, Microsoft does this "mixing bootloaders into one" automatically. I don't know how to change that now, how to separate them. I'd like to start everything directly from the GRUB menu. The bootloader is stored on hd(0,1). I tried to boot from hd(0,0) and hd(0,2) as well, but it didnt work. Can anyone help me please?

  I've got quite simple question actually. How green, low-power and efficient x86 home server can I build using consumer parts with rather constrained budget. After looking through some Google hits I've found out that system based on dual-core atom, some modest mITX board (gigabit lan, integrated audio and gfx etc), one RAM module and one 'green' WD HDD, powered by picoITX PSU uses about 30W at idle up to 40 at load. Can you get lower (or how much lower) then that? Maybe some VIA nano chips, or single core atom? My home server would take care of some back-upping mixed with little ftp/http traffic.

• What decent audio recording interfaces are well supported in Windows 7 64bit?

  I currently have an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum. It permits me to insert a 1/4" jack line from bass guitar and play along with pre-recorded piano music. This worked fine under Windows XP. I am moving to Windows 7 64 bit (dual boot for now), and Creative may not develop fully working drivers for this component. Looking around, I don't see Windows 7 support mentioned at product web sites from E-MU, Roland, M-Audio, etc. Even at Creative, the posting of available drivers for Windows 7 is deceptive, as they do not adequately support recording (latency, distortion). My local music store shrugs and says to stay with Win XP. In some cases, the Vista drivers will work in Win 7. So I need real world feedback on this. I should also mention I'm not impressed with available USB interfaces - they have too low of a signal to noise ratio for my purposes. That leaves PCI, or possibly firewire devices (never tried one yet).

• Slowdown after repeated hibernation in XP SP3

  I have a Dell laptop w/dual core and 4 gigs of memory. Recently my machine has started to go off in never never land for 5 to 20 minutes at a time with a lot of hard drive churning. Eventually it comes back and everything operates properly. If I manage to have task manager up CPU usage shows no more then 3 to 5% during this process. I am on a corporate network and have very good virus protection in place. The problem seems to have increased in frequency since I let an update happen to IE8 and/or I started using hibernate more frequently. Any ideas or suggestions? TIA J

  Hi We are looking to setup a 3 node Hyper-V cluster with live migration and failover using: 3 x Dell R710's with dual quad core Xeon & 128 GB RAM & 6 NICs in each 1 x Dell MD 3220i SAN We will be running this setup from a data center and so co-locating our kit. Can anybody explain how we should setup the network connections to make the system redundant? I believe we need network connections for: live migration, heartbeat, management, hyper-v etc. I assume as we are running it from a DC all IPs will have to be public IPs? Are AD servers will be VMs. One on each Hyper-V server and setup not to be HA.

• Virtualbox PXE Boot Failing with a Windows Server 2008 R2 Server

  Some fast help on this would be good, I have been on this problem for 14 hours. In a Virtualbox test environment I have 2 virtual machines networked together using a internal network (no traffic runs though the host, it is all at a software level). One is a fresh client with 512mb of ram and a dual core set-up, the other is the server with 1.5GB of ram and running server 2008 r2. The server is configured as a dns server, dchp server, domain controller and also serves PXE booting though WDS (Windows Deployment Services). Both machines can see each other and I am able to start a network boot. The issue comes at the second to last stage of the pre windows PE install. On TFTP download of boot.sdi it starts it but stops during the boot process.

The audio in the video is not being played when you try to play the video. But the .flv works fine. • Using a sky card in Media Center

I'm wondering if it's possible to get a slot of some kind to put my Sky Card into a Media Center PC and then be able to have a triple or dual tuner, and connect to the satelitte dish, allowing me to record 3 and watch a previously recorded. • Radeon 5850 Why am I not getting 3 monitors up as a choice ??

  Ive just bought the top end ATI Radeon card with 2 normal monitor ports and a HDMI. The idea was to continue using my dual screen setup as always and to use the last plug, the HDMI on my TV. I got a new 52 inch HD TV with all the necessary bits. This should work fine. But.. in Display Properties I still get only my 2 monitors up as options. Not the Digital TV. When I unplug 1 monitor and restart the computer, I get the TV and the other monitor. But never all 3 at the same time. Why is this ? Where can I go to tell it that I need all 3 screens at the same time. Also I get a message saying my gfx card also gives sound through the HDMI cable.. But the TV tells me its recieving a sound format that it does not understand. Any ideas on that too while were at it ?

• SAN cache memory upgrade

  We currently have an IBM DS4300 Dual Controller Fibre SAN. It is a good box, but getting pretty old. It came with 256MB of cache per controller. Recently we replaced the batteries in one of the controllers and noticed that the cache is a DDR PC2100 ECC DIMM. Of course, we are thinking about how cheap this RAM is now and is there any good reason we can't upgrade the RAM. IBM used to have a "Turbo" upgrade to this box that doubled the cache and had a bunch of software features for about 10K USD. Since that product has been end-of-lifed, I don't think we can get that upgrade and we don't need the software upgrades (FlashCopy, StorageCopy, etc). Besides the obvious potential warranty issue, what if any issues would we expect to see if attempting to put 2 - 1GB DIMMS in this unit? Any other things I am missing here? • How to get gigabit network speeds on Windows XP?

  We've just installed gigabit switches at work, and things on the Linux side are going well. Our linux boxes, which use a Intel Corporation 82566DM-2 Gigabit nic (according to lspci), consistently get over 900 mbits/sec: iperf -c ipserver ------------------------------------------------------------ Client connecting to ipserver, TCP port 5001 TCP window size: 16.0 KByte (default) ------------------------------------------------------------ [ 3] local 192.168.40.9 port 39823 connected with 192.168.1.115 port 5001 [ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth [ 3] 0.0-10.0 sec 1.08 GBytes 929 Mbits/sec We have a bunch of Windows XP 64-bit machines that use Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx cards. I spent around a day trying to get equivalent speeds on them, but couldn't get above 200 Mbits/sec. I noticed the Windows iperf tests said that the TCP window size was 8 Kb by default (as opposed to 16 Kb on Linux, so I modified my test to reflect that. Still no love. I went to Broadcom's site, downloaded the latest drivers for the card and installed. Still no love. However, finally, I tried a 64 Kb window size with the new drivers, and finally an improvement! $ iperf -c ipserver -w64k ------------------------------------------------------------ Client connecting to ipserver, TCP port 5001 TCP window size: 64.0 KByte ------------------------------------------------------------ [ 3] local 192.168.40.214 port 1848 connected with 192.168.1.115 port 5001 [ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth [ 3] 0.0-10.0 sec 933 MBytes 782 Mbits/sec Much better, but still not really taking advantage of the full capabilities of the network. If the Linux box can reach 950 Mbits/sec consistently, this box should be able to as well. Also, if you're wondering about the medium, this is over the same cable...I'm switching back and forth. • Unable to run VMs on hyper-v

  Folks/Mates, I need some advise and assistance regarding the testing of Hyper-V. Here is my h/ware configuration: 1) Intel i5 processor (i5-750) 2) Intel M/B DP55WB 3) 6 GB DDR3 RAM OS = Server 2008 R2 Standart (evaluation copy). I installed 2008 r2 on my machine and added hyper-v role to it. I created 2 VMs and installed OS. But after finishing the OS installation the VMs are not booting up. After finishing the OS installation, the VM reboots automatically (normal behaviour) and shows "preparing your system for first time" after that it reboots and didn't come online. Few things to notice, when I am running "securable" on my server 2008 R2 OS it shows that processor is not supporting h/ware virtulization, but (since my desktop is dual boot) when I am running "securable" on my windows 7 OS, it shows that process "does" supports hardware virtulization. VT option is already enabled in BIOS. Any help and suggestions are highly appreciated :) Thanks in advance. Pradeep Rawat

• Very slow browsing shared folder XP client/host

  I have a pretty straightforward setup where I'm storing media files on an XP pro machine, and sharing the folder to be accessed by other XP pro machines around the house. (Typically, there's only one client accessing the share at a time, although there may be several with the share mounted.) It's been working just fine for years, but I've recently started having some problems. A couple of days ago, the host PC had power disconnected while it was running. It was restarted and everything seemed fine initially, but since then browsing the shared folder from client machines has been extremely slow and actually reading data is all but impossible. The problem exists in every access method I've tried: Windows Explorer, VLC dialogs, command line, etc. My first thought was that the disk was experiencing problems, but there are no problems viewing the files locally on the host machine. My second thought was that there was a network problem on the host machine, so I removed and reinstalled drivers for the NIC with no change. My third thought was that there might've been a problem elsewhere on the network, so I swapped out hardware to no avail. I'm regrouping and trying to come up with a methodical approach to figuring out what might be wrong. I would of course be thrilled if you can suggest specific problems (Microsoft KB articles, etc.) that I might check, but I'm not expecting a silver bullet. If you can help me outline an approach to identify the problem (including recommended tools, e.g., disk checkers, network analyzers, etc.) I'd greatly appreciate it.
