• Designing a persistent asynchronous TCP protocol

  I have got a collection of web sites that need to send time-sensitive messages to host machines all over my metro area, each on its own generally dynamic IP. Until now, I have been doing this the way of the script kiddie: Each host machine runs an (s)FTP server, or an HTTP(s) server, and correspondingly has a certain port opened up by its gateway. Each host machine runs a program that watches a certain folder and automatically opens or prints or exec()s when a new file of a given extension shows up. Dynamic IP addresses are accommodated using a dynamic DNS service. Each web site does cURL or fsockopen or whatever and communicates directly with its recipient as-needed. This approach has been suprisingly reliable, however obvious issues have come up and the situation needs to be addressed. As stated, these messages are time-sensitive and failures need to be detected within minutes of submission by end-users. What I'm doing is building a messaging protocol. It will run on a machine and connection in my control. As far as the service is concerned, there is no distinction between web site and host machine -- there is only one device sending a message to another device. So that's where I'm at right now. I've got a skeleton server and a skeleton client. They can negotiate high-quality authentication and encryption. The (TCP) connection is persistent and asynchronous, and can handle delimited (i.e., read until \r\n or whatever) as well as length-prefixed (i.e., read exactly n bytes) messages. Unless somebody gives me a better idea, I think I'll handle messages as byte arrays. So I'm looking for suggestions on how to model the protocol itself -- at the application level. I'll mostly be transferring XML and DLM type files, as well as control messages for things like "handshake" and "is so-and-so online?" and so forth. Is there anything really stupid in my train of thought? Or anything I should read about before I get started? Stuff like that -- please and thanks.

  i am creating my own portable server but i can't make it to run the phpMyAdmin, the mysql, php and apache is running except for phpMyAdmin.   I am working on survey of state-of-the-art and trends of spam prevention techniques. I observe that non-intrusive, transparent to visitor spam prevention techniques (like context-based filtering or honey traps) are frequently called non-captcha. Is it correct understanding of term CAPTCHA which is "type of challenge-response [ 2 ]test used in computing to ensure that the response is not generated by a compute" [ 1 ] and challenge-response does not seem to imply obligatory human involvement. So, which understanding (definition) of term and classification I'd better to stick with? How would I better call CAPTCHA without direct human interaction in order to avoid ambiguity and confusion of terms understnding? How would I better (succinctly and unambiguously) coin the term for captchas requiring human interaction but without typing into textbox? How would I better (succinctly and unambiguously) coin the terms to mark the difference between human interaction with images (playing, drag&dropping, rearranging, clicking with images) vs. just recognizing them (and then typing into a textbox the answer without interaction with images)? PS. The problem is that recognition of a wiggled word in an image or typing the answer to question is also interaction and when I start to use the terms "interaction", "interactive", "captcha", "protection", "non-captcha", "non-interactive", "static", "dynamic", "visible", "hidden" the terms overlap ambiguously with which another (especailly because the definitions or their actual practice of usage are vague or contradictive). • C# ErrorProvider Want to know if any are Active

  I want to know if any ErrorProvider are active in my form. being able to find this out might help reduce my code.. I did find this thing here Counting ErrorProvider but incase someone knows a better way... so here goes. Ok so basically I have a WinForm which has many TextBoxes Now when user enters values I use Validating to perform validation and if it does not match Regex I set the ErrorProvider ON for that Control.. similarly if the user changes the value to a acceptable one I switch ErrorProvider OFF for that Control.. but when SAVE is clicked i have to do another check anyways incase the user did not listen to me and change the thing like he was supposed to and still clicked SAVE.. I dont want the thing crashing.. soo mm is there like a thing where I could say if ErrorProviders is not active then proceed with save else message box saying change it. [ANOTHER QUESTION] Umm When Validating it only Validates when the Control loses Focus... I kinda of want it to do validation when user stops typing.. I hope you get what I mean Like Email Address(textbox) when user is typing his/her name in I [DON'T] want it to do validation yet, but when user has finished entering is waiting for ErrorProvider to disappear(But it doesn't coz it only does that when control loses focus) 2 odd seconds after typing can i make the validation take place?

• Accessing Virtual Host from outside LAN

  I'm setting up a web development platform that makes things as easy as possible to write and test all code on my local machine, and sync this with my web server. I setup several virtual hosts so that I can access my projects by typing in "project" instead of "localhost/project" as the URL. I also want to set this up so that I can access my projects from any network. I signed up for a DYNDNS URL that points to my computer's IP address. This worked great from anywhere before I setup the virtual hosts. Now when I try to access my projects by typing in my DYNDNS URL, I get the 403 Forbidden Error message, "You don't have permission to access / on this server." To setup my virtual hosts, I edited two files - hosts in the system32/drivers/etc folder, and httpd-vhosts.conf in the Apache folder of my WAMP installation. In the hosts file, I simply added the server name to associate with 127.0.0.1. I added the following to the http-vhosts.conf file: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost DocumentRoot "c:/wamp/www/ladybug" ServerName ladybug ErrorLog "logs/your_own-error.log" CustomLog "logs/your_own-access.log" common </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost DocumentRoot "c:/wamp/www" ServerName localhost ErrorLog "logs/localhost-error.log" CustomLog "logs/localhost-access.log" common </VirtualHost> Any idea why I can't access my projects from typing in my DYNDNS URL? Also, is it possible to setup virtual hosts so that when I type in http://projects from a random computer outside of my network, I access url.dyndns.info/projects (a.k.a. my WAMP projects on my home computer)? • Groovy / Scala / Java under the hood

  I used Java for like 6-7 years, then some months ago I discovered Groovy and started to save a lot of typing.. then I wondered how certain things worked under the hood (because groovy performance is really poor) and understood that to give you dynamic typing every Groovy object is a MetaClass object that handles all the things that the JVM couldn't handle by itself. Of course this introduces a layer in the middle between what you write and what you execute that slows down everything. Then somedays ago I started getting some infos about Scala. How these two languages compare in their byte code translations? How much things they add to the normal structure that it would be obtained by plain Java code? I mean, Scala is static typed so wrapper of Java classes should be lighter, since many things are checked during compile time but I'm not sure about the real differences of what's going inside. (I'm not talking about the functional aspect of Scala compared to the other ones, that's a different thing) Can someone enlighten me? From WizardOfOdds it seems like that the only way to get less typing and same performance would be to write an intermediate translator that translates something in Java code (letting javac compile it) without alterating how things are executed, just adding synctatic sugar withour caring about other fallbacks of the language itself.

• Laggy interface with NSSearchField hooked up to an NSArrayController via bindings

  So I've got an NSSearchField hooked up directly to an NSArrayController via bindings, attached to the filterPredicate, so that without any code, the user can just type in the NSSearchField and filter the list of objects in the NSArrayController presented to him in the interface (an NSCollectionView, to be specific). The NSSearchField is hooked up to provide live searching, so that the NSCollectionView is filtered instantly as the user types, not after waiting for a short period for the user to stop typing. However, the problem is that this makes the interface really laggy. Typing is delayed significantly, by 0.5-1 seconds, and it seems like the NSCollectionView is trying to animate each and every rearrangement of items for each portion of the search string that the user enters. What I'd like is for the searching to be live, but the typing in the search field to be fluid, and the results to filter as fast as possible. Is there a way to do this via bindings, or will I need to put in some custom code that triggers the filterPredicate on a separate thread? (Note that I've got a custom sorting algorithm set up on the NSArrayController, and removing it seems to help a bit with the laggyness, but not completely.)

  Hi I would like to see if I can make a "search as you type" implementation, against a web service, that is optimized enough for it to run on an iPhone. The idea is that the user starts typing a word; "Foo", after each new letter I wait XXX ms. to see if they type another letter, if they don't, I call the web service using the word as a parameter. The web service call and the subsequent parsing of the result I would like to move to a different thread. I have written a simple SearchWebService class, it has only one public method: - (void) searchFor:(NSString*) str; This method tests if a search is already in progress (the user has had a XXX ms. delay in their typing) and subsequently stops that search and starts a new one. When a result is ready a delegate method is called: - (NSArray*) resultsReady; I can't figure out how to get this functionality 'threaded'. If I keep spawning new threads each time a user has a XXX ms. delay in the typing I end up in a bad spot with many threads, especially because I don't need any other search, but the last one. Instead of spawning threads continuously, I have tried keeping one thread running in the background all the time by: - (void) keepRunning { NSAutoreleasePool *pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; SearchWebService *searchObj = [[SearchWebService alloc] init]; [[NSRunLoop currentRunLoop] run]; //keeps it alive [searchObj release]; [pool release]; } But I can't figure out how to access the "searchFor" method in the "searchObj" object, so the above code works and keeps running. I just can't message the searchObj or retrieve the resultReady objects? Hope someone could point me in the right direction, threading is giving me grief:) Thank you.

  I am reading Bjarne Stroustrup's Programming : Principles and Practice Using C++ In the drill section for Chapter 2 it talks about various ways to look at typing errors when compiling the hello_world program #include "std_lib_facilities.h" int main() //C++ programs start by executing the function main { cout << "Hello, World!\n", // output "Hello, World!" keep_window_open(); // wait for a character to be entered return 0; } In particular this section asks: Think of at least five more errors you might have made typing in your program (e.g. forget keep_window_open(), leave the Caps Lock key on while typing a word, or type a comma instead of a semicolon) and try each to see what happens when you try to compile and run those versions. For the cout line, you can see that there is a comma instead of a semicolon. This compiles and runs (for me). Is it making an assumption ( like in the javascript question: Why use semicolon? ) that the statement has been terminated ? Because when I try for keep_terminal_open(); the compiler informs me of the semicolon exclusion.

  When I hover on a static menu item that has a dynamic menu, the hover styles are in effect but once I start navigating the dynamic menu the static menu item goes back to the non-hover styles. Does anyone know how to make them stick until I stop ''using' that menu? I tried the 'selected' static menu item styles but that doesn't work - if I use them, even when I stop navigating the menu the last selected static menu item will display the selected style - after using the menu I want the styles to revert to the normal styles....

I scan the plugin dlls for controller using StructureMap and I then can pull them out and instantiate them when requested. This works fine. The view is found and is pulled out into a stream. I then receive a parse error Could not load type 'System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<dynamic>'. which I can't find mentioned in any previous example of pluggable views. Why would my view not compile at this stage? Thanks for any help, Ian EDIT: Getting closer to an answer but not quite clear why things aren't compiling. Based on the comments I checked the versions and everything is in V2, I believe dynamic was brought in at V2 so this is fine. I don't even have V3 installed so it can't be that. I have however got the view to render, if I remove the <dynamic> altogether. So a VPP works but only if the view is not strongly typed or dynamic This makes sense for the strongly typed scenario as the type is in the dynamically loaded dll so the viewengine will not be aware of it, even though the dll is in the bin. Is there a way to load types at app start? Considering having a go with MEF instead of my bespoke Structuremap solution. What do you think?

  There was a small debate regarding the speed of fnmatch over pathinfo here : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2692536/how-to-check-if-file-is-php I wasn't totally convinced so decided to benchmark the two functions. Using dynamic and static paths showed that pathinfo was faster. Is my benchmarking logic and conclusion valid? • Symfony2 - PdfBundle not working

  Using Symfony2 and PdfBundle to generate dynamically PDF files, I don't get to generate the files indeed. I guess all the setting up is correctly configured, as I am not getting any "library not found" nor anything on that way... So, having the above code, when I request the route http://www.mysite.com/*...*/pdf, all what I get is the following HTML rendered: <pdf> <dynamic-page> Hello Pedro! </dynamic-page> </pdf> (so a blank HTML page with just the words Hello Pedro! on it. Any clue? Am I doing anything wrong? Is it mandatory to have the alternative *.html.twig apart from the *.pdf.twig version? I don't think so... :(

  I have two classes, ServiceType and ServiceRequest. Every ServiceRequest must specify what kind of ServiceType it is. All ServiceType's are predefined in the database, and ServiceRequest is created at runtime by the client. If this is the case, how do I make it so that Hibernate points to the exists ServiceType instead of trying to insert it again?

• Is there a full REPL for Erlang?

  Is there a way to have a full interpreter in Erlang, not just a "shell". Since it is a dynamic language, not being able to define named functions in the interpreter is a little bit disappointing... I suspect that it is because compilation units (modules) must be explicitly compiled for their execution by the VM, but maybe a REPL acting as a dynamic/recompilable module exist?
