• How to transfer files and settings from Windows 7 x64 to Windows 2008 R2?

  If I want to re-install Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit (or any other edition of Windows 7), I'd typically use "Windows Easy Transfer" utility built in the OS to backup and restore my files and settings. But in my case, I'm migrating to Windows Server 2008 R2. If I remember well -having worked on both Windows 2008/2008R2 before- "Windows Easy Transfer" is NOT installed on Windows server, and it doesn't even understand the format of the backup file it generates (".MIG" file). I can't remember for sure whether this is true, is it? And if it's true, what is the alternative for transferring the files and more importantly program settings to Windows 2008 R2? Of course I'm aware of the "manual" option and that automatic transfer sure will not transfer everything. Options??

• periodically unable to play media

  So I don't know if this is right place to ask this at all but I've gotten good help here before so I thought I'd ask. For the last year or so periodically my computer would start refusing to play media. In browser players would say they were playing but they weren't. No audio and the video wasn't moving forward although it would show the first frame of the video to be shown. iTunes would act similarly, thinking it was playing without actually playing any music. This persists across browsers, various application categories, etcetera. It can often be fixed by rebooting but it is only a short term solution. Does anyone know of anything that might cause this erratic behavior? I'm using Windows 7 64bit. If additional information would help please ask. Alternatively, if this isn't the right site for this I would greatly appreciate some direction to a site better suited to my question. Thanks in advance for any help.

  We are using the switch user function within Windows 7 under an active directory network. We have one application in particular that gives us an error: Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted. bind Port 10001 Are there any other ports that can only be used at one time that might have an adverse effect on the other user? We try to mentor our users to use the log off function instead of switch user, but that doesn't always happen. As an alternative, is it possible to disable the 'switch user' button on our machines?

• Can I be a wireless server WITHOUT offering internet?

  I would like to pull into a truck stop and offer a folder of free documentaries to quell some of the ignorance LOL I run Linux ";-) Very happy to have made that switch by the way...and have an internal wireless in the laptop but my bus has an antenna on the roof which I connect via usb to create a wireless signal (this is the one I'd like to focus on since it will offer the most reach to all those truckers out there. My question is this. I'm running apache2 and have a bunch of videos tossed into the www folder and can access it locally and would like others that frown on paying to use the truckstops slow internet service and would like an alternative by simply logging onto me and getting the narrow content I offer freely without passwords and the like. Has anyone a good means of doing this? p.s. I've done this in the past but am getting old and forgetful (my crutch)

• Fsck stuck on "Clone Multiply-claimed blocks"

  Update: I fixed the issue. But I don't see eth0 directory in /sys/class/net Any idea how to fix that? I could not bring up eth0 and I need it badly so that I can backup everything over the network since I'm working on VM console. This virtual machine sda1 is stuck. I've tried e2fsck and fsck and both gets stuck after "Clone multiply-claimed blocls? yes" I've waited for around 5 to 8 hours and it still the same. I could not mount the filesystem without fixing these errors. I'm doing this after un-mounting all filesystems in rescue mode.. Reboot does not help. Any suggestions? • virtualizing a .net application

  My professor ask me to create an application and it will be run on a machine without .NET installed. My application utilizes .NET 4.0 (just basic c# necessites but without the LINQ and complicated references) and he only wants executable file. So how can we run this application on his machine without install .NET (like the setup files and stuff)???? I was thinking of virtualizing via VMware ThinApp, but I find it difficult since it requires the application to be installed, yet my professor only wants the application to be in exe format (so thinapp cannot track the changes in my system). Any alternative? suggestions?

  I was recently installing Microsoft Windows SDK for Windows 7 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 to create my build server on a VM (Windows 2003 R2 Std), I was wondering that it would be nice to specify the temporary folder for the files being extracted by MSI for use during the installation. This should ideally work for any MSIs. I have some more virtual hard disks I have attached to this VMs, to point the temporary folder for MSI to one of these virtual hard disks would be quite productive since I can remove/discard this virtual hard disk later. Compacting the C drive VHD is a pain, and does not always reclaim space correctly. I tried changing the %temp% and tmp environment variable with no effect? • How to quickly empty a very full recycle bin?

  I have deleted about half a million files from a folder, and didn't think to press Shift in order to delete them completely straight away. Now they're clogging my recycle bin, and Windows claims it will take 4 hours to empty it - it claims to do about 68 files per second. Is there some magic or an alternative method that can speed this up? Bounty - I'm starting a bounty. The files are still in my bin, as there was no pressing need to get rid of them and this way, I can try out the suggestions presented. I am, however, looking for a way that does not include hard-deleting the contents of the RECYCLER folder - I'm sure that would work, but it feels a bit unclean to me.

  I am attempting to poll the temperature of an HP ProCurve 3500YL switch remotely using SNMP. Looking at this MIB, it appears that the following OIDs: hpCpuTemperature 1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.7.11.17.7.1.1.1.6 hpPowerSupplyTemperature 1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.7.11.17.7.1.1.1.7 hpChassisTemperature 1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.7.11.17.7.1.1.1.8 Within the 'hpProcurveSysMib' should provide the data I need. However, whenever I attempt to access these OIDs, I receive the response: SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.11.2.3.7.11.17.7.1.1.1.6 = No Such Object available on this agent at this OID Further investigation reveals that the switch in question does not appear to implement the parent hpProcurveSystem MIB: SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.11.2.3.7.11.17.7.1.1 = No Such Object available on this agent at this OID Does anyone know of an alternative MIB implemented by the 3500 that will allow its temperature to be polled automatically?

• Instant database snapshot

  My product uses oracle 9 database in its backend. every week the new release of the product is launched which will want to fire some DML, DDL queries to the database. I usually test the product release in a dummy database before applying it in the main database. I create a database dump using exp command, then import them into dummy database using imp. then i test the product in the dummy database and checks if there are any errors. This exp and imp takes about 3 hours to complete. Is there any alternative as : instant snapshot of the live database (which will be independent of the live one)? or is there any option to keep dummydatabase in sync with the originl database always. Yhis can be done by making the product firing DML&DDL queries to both the databases.. but this will be a HUGE performance problem.. how can i overcome this?

We currently use Google Analytics for site traffic monitoring but were looking to move to awstats due to concerns of inaccuracy with Google Analytics and using third-party trackers in general. I have a little experience with awstats and I know it gets its information from parsing server logs. How would this work when you have multiple web servers logging independently to separate locations? Is this supported with awstats? Is there an alternative I could use to track traffic activity directly on my servers?

• Upgrade PHP to 5.3 in Ubuntu Server 8.04 with Plesk 9.5

  I have a dedicated server with Ubuntu 8.04, and really need to upgrade php to 5.3 version in order to deploy a new version of the system. This version of php is the default one in ubuntu 10.04, so I considered upgrading the OS, but after trying that, I lost my plesk installation, which annoyed my client. I tried adding the dotdeb.org repositories, but don't know why, after running an apt-get upgrade, I get this error: # apt-get upgrade Reading package lists... • How to get a good current VMWare browser appliance?

  I'd like to have a small VMWare virtual machine that runs a copy of Firefox, with Flash enabled. (Or some equivalently-capable browser.) I tried doing some Google searching with no luck finding good keywords, and tried looking through VMWare's "marketplace" of VMs, but all I found were things from 2006 or so. Is there a reasonably easy way to get a current one? Ideally, I'd like to just download one somewhere, but in the alternative, a quick how-to guide would be useful. I know I could go through the whole process of getting a full-Linux-install VM and setting things up, but that seems like quite a lot of trouble and ends up with a pretty heavyweight solution to the problem, so I'm hoping there's a simpler way.

  Has anyone had experience plugging GlusterFS and Openfiler together or something similar? Here is the motivation: Disk space on multiple server regrouped using GlusterFS Centralized access using LDAP/AD and quota management using Openfiler as the GlusterFS client SMB/CIFS server for easy sharing to multiple users on Mac and Windows I know I can have Gluster installed on Openfiler (rPath Linux) successfully but Openfiler seems to be very picky on what it can use as a shared drive. Mounting the Gluster volume inside an existing share does not seem to allow quotas with the mounted folder free space. If this is not possible, is there any alternative to give the same capabilities?

  I love using Delicious and share the same PC as my girlfriend. When my she logs into her Yahoo! email account, I need to log out of my Delicious account because its tied to my Yahoo! login. So because of that, I can't use Delicious as a social bookmarking service. I love all its features and need an alternative that also uses Firefox addon integration and tagging. I've tried diigo.com but tagging is annoying. You can store your URL under your own tags but you don't have a clear way to later browse your tags in the Firefox addon. (The delicious approach is way much better and simple). Any suggestion of any service?

  I have been using Visio 2003 on Windows XP for generation of UML diagrams. I have encountered following problems so far: There is no way to generate/print the documentation written for class attributes/methods. No automatic code generation is supported I have already generated lot of diagrams and i discovered above problems at much later stage. Now i would like to overcome above by choosing another tool which is compatible with Visio file(.vsd) which saves time or redrawing all diagrams and also provides above features. Could you kindly suggest an alternative (visio compatible) tool ? (I have looked at a similar SU-question, but it does not suggest tools which provide solution to above problems. • Why does Django's dev server use port 8000 by default?

  (My question isn't really about Django. It's about alternative http ports. I just happen to know Django is a relatively famous application that uses 8000 by default, so it's illustrative.) I have a dev server in the wild that we occasionally need to run multiple httpd services on on different ports. When I needed to stand a third service up and we were already using ports 80 and 8080, I discovered our security team has locked port 8000 access from the Internet. I recognize that port 80 is the standard http port, and 8080 is commonly http_alt, but I'd like to make the case to our security team to open 8000 as well. In order to make that case, I hope the answer to this question can provide me with a reasonable argument for using port 8000 over 8080 in some case. Or was it just a random choice with no meaning?

• Internal USB A Female to motherboard 4-pin that mounts internally

  I'm wondering if anyone knows of a product like this but that is physically mountable internally rather than on a cable? I'm planning on building a super low profile "gateway" pc that is dedicated to handling internet traffic in my home. I have a great 1U rackmountable chassis for an ITX motherboard, but I need the hard drive real estate for the additional NIC required to run a gateway (one onboard and one PCI). So the plan is to use a small 8GB USB Jump Drive for the OS inside the box (as to not have one hanging out the back. And although it's racked, I still don't want the jump drive flopping around internally, so I want it fixed somehow. I have an alternative idea where by I use a flush mount zap strap saddle and a zip tie to hold it in place, but that seems kind of like a hack.

• Creating windows links on Linux?

  I'm running a SAMBA file store for our Windows users, and I'd like to automatically generate windows LNK files linking to other network shares that the user needs access to. I've done quite a bit of googling and I can't find a way of creating windows links on Linux, or through Perl. I did find a perl module that looked promising in CPAN, but it will only run on Windows unfortunately. If it's not possible to create .LNK files, perhaps there is an alternative solution people can suggest to allow the users to click on a file in one SAMBA store to be linked to a different SAMBA share?   I have a problem with a slightly customised Debian image that I'm trying to do some headless work on. The problem is that the installed locales list has been reduced to this: C en_GB en_GB.iso88591 en_GB.iso885915 en_GB.utf8 POSIX However, when I log in as root (with an otherwise as-vanilla profile), I find this: ~# set | grep LC_ LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 That's the only LC_ environment variable set, and presumably that means that it's being explicitly set somewhere (and given that /etc/default/locale only contains LANG=en_GB, I can't see any other alternative). However, I can't see where it is being set, and the fact that it's wrong is preventing, for example, postgresql-8.4 from installing. I know I can do an LC_CTYPE=en_GB apt-get install postgresql-8.4 to work around this, but I'd really like to understand where this setting comes from, and I really dislike the idea of installing an otherwise-unnecessary locale to make this go away. So: where does this LC_CTYPE setting come from, and how do I make it go away?

XPS seems lighter than PDF, perhaps it only appears so because of Adobe's bloated reader, but that's for another discussion. Is it worth it to begin encoding in XPS instead of PDF? Will Vista or above be able to read it without problems? What should I look out for?

• "tar -cfz" versus "tar cf - | gzip": are they different? (or how to improve a backup)

  I want to speed up my backup done with "tar -cfz", the common way to do it. But day by day my backed up files grow so it becomes slower. I was thinking to take advantage of the several cores available in my server and I was wondering if there is any difference between doing the backup with "tar -cfz" or piping tar to gzip ("tar cf - | gzip"). I guess that there isn't any difference, because the first spawns two processes (tar and gzip), in a similar way like piping it. If there is not difference, do you know any good alternative to do this, without going incremental? I'm looking at pigz too and it looks fine.

• Getting XAMPP to work with multiple version of PHP

  How can I install XAMPP to work with different versions of PHP? I use XAMPP because some of the scripts are buggy when run in WAMP. I use WAMP because it supports different versions of PHP. But now I would like to streamline it down to just XAMPP so that my web development would be easier to manage. Is it possible to configure XAMPP to work with more than one version of PHP? Or is it something that I have to look for in an alternative solution? Note: I'm running on Windows 7.
