What should I learn to improve my Java skills ?

Hello, I currently know Java SE and I want to learn something more 'enterprise'. I would like something more distributed (app server, server programming, web, content management system ...) but any suggestion is ok. There are many frameworks which I've heard: spring, hibernate, persistence, ejb, jsp, servlet, jsf, jboss, glassfish, ant etc etc etc etc. I'm very confused where to start. So the question is: Can somebody explain to me what actually there frameworks are; and which one should I start with ? Thank you.

I'm working on a Java EE application, primarily JAX-RS with a JSF admin console, that uses CDI/Weld for dependency injection with @ApplicationScoped objects. Minor debugging issues aside, CDI has worked beautifully for this project. Now I need some very coarse-grained control over CDI-injected object lifecycles. I need the ability to: Remove an injected object from the application context, or Destroy/delete/clear/reset/remove the entire application context, or Define my own @ScopeType and implementing Context in which I could provide methods to perform one of the two above tasks. I'm fully aware that this is across, if not against, the grain of CDI and dependency injection in general. I just want to know Is this remotely possible? If yes, what is the easiest/simplest/quickest/foolproofiest way to get the job done?

Hello I was looking at creating a UI for developing web forms, similar to the Netbeans Visual JSF form designer.It will be targeted to use GWT/GXT components.I am looking at a look very similar to VS/Netbeans. Any thoughts on where/how to start ? Initially, I would prefer to have it as a standalone application, later develop it as eclipse plugin. I have already evaluated the extjs designer and the eclipse plugin from instantiations, but i would prefer to have it developed on my own, as it looks challenging, Also, I have few custom components that have been developed. Sun Java crashing, mostly with jboss

I'm on Ubuntu 10.10. I keep having problems with Sun Java crashing on me. I mostly have it crashing on my Jboss server, but I've had it crash MANY MANY times running ANT tasks or the IntelliJ IDE. (I get this probably 2 or 3 times a day, if not more). I have another machine running Ubuntu 10.04 with Sun Java and I have yet to see this problem. 1.0.6_20 is the java version on the 10.04 machine. My machine is running 1.6.0_22. Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone know how to keep it from happening? Also: I have tried reinstalling it and I can't use OpenJDK.

I am trying to learn java servlet/jsp with the MVC concept and built the simplest MVC application. Now I want give more detail to it to enhance my understanding. If I would need to register a new row in a table in the database, how should we pass the various value of column into the system? For example, the user might want to register a new event in his planner and the detail of the event involves the 'where', 'when', 'who', 'detail', etc. Should pass all this long value from the servlet's parameter, i.e: the http link? String accNo = request.getParameter("account_number"); String a = request.getParameter("..."); String b = request.getParameter("..."); String c = request.getParameter("..."); String d = request.getParameter("..."); To illustrate my view that it is really unprofessional to show all the parameter on the link: http://localhost:8080/domain1/servlet1?param1=55555555555555&param2=666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666&param3='Some random detail written by user.........................' Is there other way to pass them?

Hi, We have a system built on seam/richfaces. There's this webpage where the tables are rendered from dynamic context (from multiple different datasources, and each of them uses a different layout to represent essentially the same real world concept). As a result, this table is binded to a bean, and it's columns/layout are generated from this bean. Now I need to add a command link on a specific column, equivalent to <a4j:commandLink value="#{actBean.Ids}" action="#{actBean.genDetails}"> <f:setPropertyActionListener target="#{actBean.Ref}" value="#{cont}"/> </a4j:commandLink> in a JSF page. My question is, how do I do this programmatically? Thanks!

Seam app with JBoss 'minimal' Config?

I'd like to improve the performance of my Seam apps and JBoss appserver, particularly by removing things that aren't necessary in the standard configuration. Ideally, I'd like to be able to run it using the "minimal" profile. Can anyone give me any guidance as to what is needed to run a Seam app using "minimal"? Here are the kind of things my app requires: JPA, using Hibernate with a PostgreSQL backend EJB3 JSF (RichFaces/Facelets) E-mail, eventually, although not required at this particular moment I'll be developing my app using JBoss Tools on Eclipse, so I would also need anything that is required by the tools for development and deployment. I've found that the default configuration just has too many additional components and features installed by default, and that greatly affects performance when I'm trying to develop. Any help you can give would be great! Thanks!

Hello everybody, I am currently developing a Web-Application using Java EE where I'm using a Rich-Javascript-Editor (http://www.primefaces.org/showcase/ui/editor.jsf). As the user can easily add too many linebreaks that will be convertet to linebreak-tags, I need to remove all these Tags from the end of a String. Is there an elegant way of using Regex to accomplish this? An example String would be: "This is a test bold " Where obviously the last two tags have to be removed. I know that there is a lot healthy discussion about this topic. but my case is entirely different from these discussions. I have just passed out my graduation. During the graduation period, i had done C#.net and java as well. Now i am working as Android programmer in a company. In the recent times, i have heard a lot about pros and cons of these platforms. What our seniors used to suggest that, ASP.net is a lot better than JSP for website developement. .net provides us lot of in built tools and API's for building powerfull applications. Java's platform independancy has always been issue among them. Security fetures are more in java. .Net has more powerfull IDE's. Now i am a bit confused on which platform to choose from these. I found java better from two, so did i prefer to choose android. Also, the discussion always ends with an issue that java has no scope for job as far has .net does. I would like to hear suggestions on this topic, but it would be better, if you consider indian IT market for this discussion.

Emacs stops taking input when a file has changed on disk [migrated]

I'm using Emacs v24.3.1 on Windows 8. I had a file change on disk while I had an Emacs buffer open with that file. As soon as I attempt to make a change to the buffer, a message appears in the minibuffer. Fileblah.txt changed on disk; really edit the buffer? (y, n, r or C-h) I would expect to be able to hit r to have it reload the disk version of the file, but nothing happens. Emacs completely stops responding to input. None of the listed keys work, nor do any other keys as far as I can tell. I can't C-g out of the minibuffer. Alt-F4 doesn't work, not does Close window from the task bar. I have to kill the process from task manager. Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong here? In cases it's various modes not playing nice with each other, for reference, my init.el is here. Nothing complex. Here's the breakdown: better-defaults (ido-mode, remove menu-bar, uniquify buffer `forward, saveplace) recentf-mode custom frame title visual-line-mode require final newline and delete trailing whitespace on save Markdown mode with auto-mode-alist Flyspell with Aspell backend Powershell mode with auto-mode-alist Ruby auto-mode-alist Puppet mode with auto-mode-alist Feature (Gherkin) mode with auto-mode-alist The specific file was a markdown file with Github-flavored Markdown mode and Flyspell mode enabled.

JPA in distributed Java EE configuration

Hello, I'm developing a JEE application to run on Glassfish: Database (javaDB, MS SQL, MySQL or Oracle) EJB layer with JPA (Toplink essentials - from Glassfish) for database access JSF/Icefaces based web UI accessing the EJB layer The application will have a lot of concurrent web client, so I want to run it on different physical servers and use a load-balancer. My problem is now how to keep the applications synchronized. I intend to set up multiple servers, each running Glassfish with my EAR app installed. Whenever on one of the servers data is added to or removed from the database (via JPA, no direct SQL queries), this change should be reflected in the JPA layer on the other servers. I've been looking around for solutions to this, but couldn't find anything I really like (the full Toplink from Oracle claims to have a solution, but don't know). Doing a refresh before every access to a JPA entity could work, but is far from efficient. Are there any patterns, libraries, ... that could help here? Thanks a lot!

Is the offical Sun Java EE tutorial the best way to learn how to make Java web apps?

I've been a web developer for almost a decade. I've mostly used classic ASP/JavaScript and I'd like to move into Java based apps. I have a decent understanding of Java itself (enough to know how to lookup what I don't know) and I spent some time doing minor work on a JSF/Spring/Hibernate app, but from what a trusted coworker told me, this application is the example of what not to do. I want to learn the really hardcore stuff (EJBs, HA Clustering, etc), but I know I have to walk before I can run. Is the Sun Tutorial the best place to start? Or is there an definitive book (like K&R for C or Gang of Four for design patterns) that I should buy?

My requirements are Java (I need to make use of existing Java libraries to access the relevant data) 2 screens One for static data view, maybe some search parameters Other for basic form entry No fancy AJAX required Ideally easy for a web designer to come in and tart it up as necessary, without having to rewrite everything My first stop was going to be to checkout Wicket as I've heard good things about it. I don't have the time right now to dive into anything heavy, which probably writes off JSF in my mind (I played with JSF1, steep learning curve which I've now slid back down). I'm happy to treat the result as throwaway so if there's a framework which starts of well but then doesn't scale up to bigger projects, that would be ok. Any suggestions appreciated on frameworks/approach.

Hi. I'm building a webapp that uses jboss-seam with jsf, facelets and rich faces, running on top of jboss AS 5.1. I would like to add a portlet area where I could add my own portlets, but from what I got (reading forums and documentation) I need to be running a portlet container/portal (something like liferay or gatein). But I don't want to be running a portal. I just want some kind of control where I can embed a portlet (something like an iFrame). Is this true or I got it wrong? Sources from referenced projects are not deployed to Tomcat in Eclipse

Hi, I have setup a dynamic web project in eclipse with JSF in which I trust on code from another project (framework). Therefore, I added the framework project to the build path of the website project. So far so good, Eclipse recognises every class and the project builds without errors. Problem is though that when I do "run on server" to test it on tomcat 6.0.24, the application fails. I get ClassNotFoundException on every class from the framework project. Is this a bug or is some specific configuration necessary for this?
