• Cannot enable wireless on an Intel WifiLink 1000 on an Lenovo Ideapad z570

  I am using the ubuntu 11.10 on lenovo ideapad z570. My wireless internet is not working. I have ensure that wireless switch is on. Windows 7, wireless works great.However ubuntu 11.10 is not allowing me to enable wireless connection. • Couldn't make Angry birds to work on wine

  I could run Notepad++ easily but I fail to run the Angry bird exe. Whenever I open the exe, I see one of my screen flickrs a bit (as lines and not the whole screen) and nothing happens. Any ideas? • Help find correct alsa model for onboard sound (alc887?) that will work with jack and have correct mixer setup

  I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GMT-S2 motherboard. I am using Jack for sound - connected to ALSA. I am running Ubuntu 12.04. aplay -l reports card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC887 Analog [ALC887 Analog] The problem is that the default setup, that alsa decides to use, causes stuttering and xruns no matter how generous I set the frames/period or periods/buffer etc. Also, Jack works fine if I plug in an external USB sound system and use that. My processor is an AMD phenom x4 945, and I have 8GB ram, and Video card is Geforce GTX550 Ti, all of which should be quite capable enough. I also tried Pulseaudio and that works fine, but I need to use Jack At first I thought it might be an interrupt conflict, but I have found that adding "options snd-hda-intel model=generic" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf causes it to play correctly, but the limited mixer setup lacks controls I need - so this setup isn't good enough. Still, it seems to prove it isn't a hardware conflict. I have tried many other models, such as 3stack, 6stack, auto and even basic, and they all suffer from the stuttering. I eventually found "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-6ch-intel" works without stuttering, and mixer is much closer to what it needs to be. Can anyone help on how to get a correct and accurate model for ALSA to use? • storing map template in database

  I am working on an application that displays choropleth maps. These maps are of all different types, some display state by county, country by state/province, or world by country. How should I handle storing the map information in the database? My Thoughts: I won't need to do queries to find POI inside a region, so I don't think there is a need to use spatial datatypes. I am considering storing a map as a geoJSON object (I am using JS mapping library that accepts geoJSON). The only issue is what if I want a map of the US northeast. Then I would have geoJSON for the US and a separate one for the US northeast, which would be redundant. Would it make sense to have a shape database where I had each state then when I needed a map of the US I could query for each state, and when I needed a map of the US Northeast I could again query for what I need? Note: I am not concerned with storing the data for each region, just the region itself. I will query for the data on the fly for the specific region.

• ASP.NET developers turning to Visual WebGui for rich management system

  When The Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) decided they needed a web application to allow easy access to the expenses management system they initially went to ASP.NET web forms combined with CSS. The outcome, however, was not satisfying enough as it appeared bland and lacked in richness. So in order to enrich the UI and give the web application some glitz, Visual WebGui was selected. Visual WebGui provided the needed richness and the familiar Windows look and feel also made the transition for the desktop users very easy. The richer GUI of Visual WebGui compared to ASP.NET conveyed some initial concerns about performance. But the Visual WebGui performance turned out to be a surprising advantage as the website maintained good response times. Working with Visual WebGui required a paradigm shift for the development process as some of the usual methods of coding with ASP.NET did not apply. However, the transition was fairly easy due to the simplicity and intuitiveness of Visual WebGui as well as the good support and documentation. “The shift into a different development paradigm was eased by the Visual WebGui web forums which are very active thanks to a large, involved community. • Do I need path finding to make AI avoid obstacles?

  How do you know when a path-finding algorithm is really needed? There are contexts, where you just want to improve AI navigation to avoid an object, like a space -ship that won't crash on a planet or a car that already knows where to steer, but needs small corrections to avoid a road bump. As I've seen on similar posts, the obvious solution is to implement some path-finding algorithm, most likely like A*, and let your AI-controlled object to navigate through the path. Now, I have the necessary skills to implement a path-finding algorithm, and I'm not being lazy here, but I'm still a bit skeptical on if this is really needed. I have the impression that path-finding is appropriate to navigate through a maze, or picking a path when there are many alternatives. But in obstacle avoidance, when you do know the path, but need to make slight corrections, is path finding really necessary? Even when the obstacles are too sparse or small ? I mean, in real life, when you're driving and notice a bump on the road, you will just have to pick between steering a bit on the left (and have the bump on your right side) or the other way around. You will not consider stopping, or going backwards. A path finding would be appropriate when you need to pick a route through the city, right ? So, are there any other methods to help AI navigation, except path-finding? And if there are, how do you know when path-fining is the appropriate algorithm ? Thanks for any thoughts

• Converting a JD Edwards Date to a System.DateTime

  I'm working on moving some data from JD Edwards to a SQL Server database using SSIS and needed to deal with the way in which JDE stores dates.  The format is CYYDDD, where: C = century, 1 for >= 2000 and 0 for < 2000 YY = the last two digits of the year DDD = the number of the day.  Jan 1 = 1, Dec. 31 = 365 (or 366 in a leap year) The .Net base class library has lots of good support for handling dates, but nothing as specific as the JD Edwards format, so I needed to write a bit of code to translate the JDE format to System.DateTime.  The function is below: public static DateTime FromJdeDate(double jdeDate) {   DateTime convertedDate = DateTime.MinValue;   if (jdeDate >= 30001 && jdeDate <= 200000)   {     short yearValue = (short)(jdeDate / 1000d + 1900d);     short dayValue = (short)((jdeDate % 1000) - 1);     convertedDate = DateTime.Parse("01/01/" + yearValue.ToString()).AddDays(dayValue);   }   else   {     throw new ArgumentException("The value provided does not represent a valid JDE date", "jdeDate");   }   return convertedDate; }  I'd love to take credit for this myself, but this is an adaptation of a TSQL UDF that I got from another consultant at the client site.

• Macedonian Code Camp 2011

  Autumn was filled with lot of conferences, events, speaking engagements and many interesting happenings in Skopje, Macedonia. First at October 20, I was speaking at Microsoft Vizija 9 on topic ASP.NET MVC3 and Razor. One week ago, November 15 I was speaking for first time on topic not related to web development (but still deployment of web apps was part of the demos) on topic “Cloud Computing – Windows Azure” at Microsoft BizSpark Bootcamp. The next event, which is the biggest event by the number of visitors and number of tracks is the Code Camp 2011 event. After we opened the registrations for the event, we sold out (free) 600 tickets in the first 15 hours! We all got astonished by the extremely big number of responses we’ve got… In this event, I can freely say that we expect about 700 attendees to come, and we already have 900+ registered. The event will be held at Saturday, 26 November 2011. At Code Camp 2011, I will speak on topic ASP.NET MVC Best Practices. There are many interesting things to say on this presentation, I will mainly focus on Tips, Tricks, Guidelines and other Practices that I have been using in real-life projects developed by using ASP.NET MVC Framework, with special focus on ASP.NET MVC3 and the next release, ASP.NET MVC4 Developer Preview. There are big number of known local and regional speakers, including 7 MVPs. • Is there a way communicate or measure levels of abstraction?

  I'll be the first to say that this question is a bit... out there. But here are a couple questions I bear in mind : Is abstraction continuous or discrete? Is there a single unit of abstraction? But I'm not sure those questions are truly answerable or even really makes sence. My naive answer would be something along the lines of abitrarily discrete but not necescarily having a single unit measure. Here's what I mean... Take a Black Labrador; an abstraction that could be made is that a Black Lab is a type of animal. [Animal]<--[Black Lab] A Black Lab is also a type of Dog. [Dog]<--[Black Lab] One way to establish a degree of abstraction is by comparing the two the abstractions. We could say that [Animal] is more abstract than [Dog] in respect to a Black Lab. It just so happens [Animal] can also be used as an abstraction of [Dog] So, we might end up with something like [Animal]<--[Dog]<--[Black Lab] With the model above, one might be inclined to say that there's two hops of abstraction to get from [Black Lab] to [Animal]. But you can't exactly tell somebody they need one level abstraction and reasonalby expect they will come up with [Dog] given they aren't explicity given the options above. If I needed to tell someobody in a single email that they needed an abstract class with out knowing what that abstract class is, is there a way to communaticate a degree of abstraction such that they might end up on Dog instead of Animal? As a side note, what area of study might this type of analysis fall under?

• Help, broken Gsettings

  I was trying to disable the global menu as per http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2013/07/disable-global-menu-on-ubuntu-13-10-saucy/#comment-8612, but while it didn't change anything, after running the autoremove command unity-tweak-tool broke. Obviously my first reaction was to re-install the removed package but it remains broken. TBH I don't know if it is even related or just a coincidence. When I start it from the launcher it just blinks and disappear. So how can I fix this? I'd rather prefer not having to reinstall everything. Which package is broken, can I just reinstall that? EDIT: I found by being root gnome-tweak-tool no longer crashed so possibly a permission issue somewhere. I don't know that I changed any permissions. Another related problem, actually the reason I noticed the problem at all, is that unity-tweak-tool seem no longer to want to save the values edited. I normally just have the Unity launcher on the primary display but wanted to check what it was like having it on both. I didn't like it so I went into unity-tweak-tool to set it back - but regardless how many time I tick "only primary display" it never changes anything. What does the Unity-tweak-tool actually change and can I do this directly somehow?

• Remote reboot over ssh does not restart

  I would like to remotely reboot my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server via ssh. I do sudo reboot and I loose connection and the server connection does not reappear. It does not ping. When I go the the physical computer with a screen attached I see a black screen and hear that the server is still on. I do a hard power off (press power on button for a few seconds) and the server halts. After I press power on the server boots with no problem. As far as I remember the remote reboot has previously worked on that server. I wonder if sudo reboot & will help? I suppose I could also try sudo shutdown -r and see if that does any difference. I have listed an excerpt of /etc/log/syslog below. The last thing it records is the stopping of the logging. • Codeigniter + JQuery + Processing.js to replace a Delphi App

  So, I've got a mandate to make our aged trillion lined Delphi app web based and it needs to make heavy use of the <canvas> element (HTML5 compatibility doesn't seem to be a big issue since we can just make our clients use a compatible browser the way we'd make them use a compatible version of Windows in the win32 environment). The Delphi app in question is almost completely database driven and will still pretty much continue to be developed as the main product. What I am tasked with is pretty much recreating a scaled down version of the program that performs the major functions of the whole program. I couldn't find any frameworks that simulate windows forms using the canvas element, I'm assuming this is probably by design since it is easier just to use HTML, well, be that as it may, I still think it would be cool to have a few of my cool controls on the web (TRichView and TVirtualTree, etc...) So my question is, to anyone who has tried this before, A.) What can we use for an IDE to code this web app (I just use emacs, but no one else in my company does)? B.) Is it a good idea to mix PHP and Processing.JS? It seems like I'm using a lot of AJAX to get anything to happen. 3 calls just for one dialog box to pop up, Loads the HTML for the dialog, Loads the XML to populate the database info on the form Loads the processing.js PJS file which draws the database info to the canvas. Is three a lot, do people usually combine all their gets into one?

• Input handling between game loops

  This may be obvious and trivial for you but as I am a newbie in programming I come with a specific question. I have three loops in my game engine which are input-loop, update-loop and render-loop. Update-loop is set to 10 ticks per second with a fixed timestep, render-loop is capped at around 60 fps and the input-loop runs as fast as possible. I am using one of the Javascript frameworks which provide such things but it doesn't really matter. Let's say I am rendering a tile map and the view of which elements are rendered depends on camera-like movement variables which are modified during key pressing. This is only about camera/viewport and rendering, no game physics involved here. And now, how can I handle input events among these loops to keep consistent engine reaction? Am I supposed to read the current variable modified with input and do some needed calculations in a update-loop and share the result so it could be interpolated in a render-loop? Or read the input effect directly inside the render-loop and put needed calculations inside? I thought interpreting user input inside an update-loop with a low tick rate would be inaccurate and kind of unresponsive while rendering with interpolation in the final view. How it is done properly in games overall?

• unit level testing, agile, and refactoring

  I'm working on a very agile development system, a small number of people with my doing the vast majority of progaming myself. I've gotten to the testing phase and find myself writing mostly functional level testing, which I should in theory be leavning for our tester (in practice I don't entirely...trust our tester to detect and identify defects enough to leave him the sole writter of functional tests). In theory what I should be writing is Unit level tests. However, I'm not sure it's worth the expense. Unit testing takes some time to do, more then functional testing since I have to set up mocks and plugs into smaller units that weren't design to run in issolation. More importantly, I find I refactor and redesign heavily-part of this is due to my inherriting code that needed heavy redesign and is still being cleaned up, but even once I've finished removing parts that need work I'm sure in the act of expanding the code I'll still do a decent amount of refactoring and redesign. It feels as if I will break my unit tests, forcing wasted time to refactor them as well, often due to unit test, by definition, having to be coupled so closely to the code structure. So.is it worth all the wasted time when functional tests, that will never break when I refactor/redesign, should find most defects? Do unit tests really provide that much extra defect detetection over through functional? and how does one create good unit tests that work with very quick and agile code that is modified rapidly? ps, I would be fine/happy with links to anything one considers an excellent resource for how to 'do' unit testing in a highly changing enviroment. edit: to clarify I am doing a bit of very unoffical TDD, I just seem to be writing tests on what would be considered a functional level rather then unit level. I think part of this is becaus I own nearly all of the project I don't feel I need to limit the scope as much; and part of it is that it's daunting to think of trying to go back and retroactively add the unit tests needed to cover enough code that I can feel comfortable testing only a unit without the full functionality and trust that unit still works with the rest of the units.

• DB2 on SPARC T3 Tuning Tips

  With the new self tuning feature in DB2 V9.x, a lot of database parameters are set to automatic in DB2 v9.7 by default so that DB2 can adjust the values as needed. Most should work fine without manual tweaks. But for transaction workload on SPARC T3 systems, two parameters need to be adjust manually to achieve optimal performance. DATABASE_MEMORY: When this parameter is set to AUTOMATIC and SELF_TUNING_MEM is set to ON, DB2 will allocate small page size (64KB) for all memory allocation, and expands and shrinks the memory as needed. In order to take advantage of the large page size (up to 256MB) supported by the SPARC T3, we need to manually set the size of the DATABASE_MEMORY so that DB2 can use 256MB page size for its buffer pools which are implemented as ISM segments. I know this sounds strange as it seems that you turn a switch and it ends up controlling another function. pmap(1M) output can verify the page sizes used by DB2 db2sysc process. NUM_IOCLEANERS: This parameter defines the number of page cleaners. The default value of this parameter is AUTOMATIC, which is calculated based on the number of available CPUs and the number of logical partitions. On a SPARC T3 system where there are over a hundred of virtual CPUs and single DB2 partition, DB2 would set it to #CPUs - 1. This would lead to too many page cleaners to compete flushing to disks and cause aio mutex lock contentions. So we need to decrease the value for it. The good practice is to set the value to the number of physical devices that are used by the database table space containers.

I realized that the configs that used to be saved in $HOME/.gconf/system/networking/connections now are being saved in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/.
