• For large files compress first then transfer or rsync -z? which would be fastest?

  I have a ton of relativity small data files but they take up about 50 GB and I need them transferred to a different machine. I was trying to think of the most efficient way to do this. Thoughts I had were to gzip the whole thing then rsync it and decompress it, rely on rsync -z for compression, gzip then use rsync -z. I am not sure which would be most efficient since I am not sure how exactly rsync -z is implemented. Any ideas on which option would be the fastest?

  Let's say I have 50 GiB of files that weights around 500 KiB each. My guess is that having, for example, 5 large files of 10 GiB each with the same content archived in them would be better for hard drive performance. Am I correct? Will there be a noticeable gain on an NTFS filesystem? ===================================================================== Finally, which tool could I use to group the files together while retaining the ability to modify the content of the archive with zero or minor performance loss? For example, I like TrueCrypt archiving because after mounting an archive file, it creates a drive which I can use seamlessly as if it was a normal drive. The only thing with TrueCrypt is that I don't need encryption/compression, only archiving.

  Even with just my text editor open (no web browser) and maybe the terminal, the baseline temperature is usually above 40 C. When i open 4-5 browser tabs in Safari (even if none of Sites have Flash) the temp can quickly go over 50 C. (In addition, i am observing these temps even though i have turned the fan up to 3000 rpms). (i have install smcFanControl on my MBA so i can see the temp in the menu bar.) So this means my MBA is running much warmer than my MBP; and in practice, it means that i have to be very careful how i use my MBA. Of course if i load a Site with Flash, it just freaks out, and often quickly goes above 65 C (I've installed a flash blocker to avoid this). Is anyone else observing this behavior? I have checked the Apple boards and sure enough, there are a lot of complaints, but nothing from Apple.

  I have this laptop, which has a i3 processor, 4gb memory, 7200rpm hard drive. So there is nothing wrong with the specs. Even when I have no applications open, simply closing and opening windows, lags. Or opening the start menu, or dragging icons across the desktop. sometimes even the cursor lags. So I checked out the resource monitor, and the resources using disk activity are svchost Avast ------- my antivirus, but not much System (PID 4) ------ This is using a huge chunk The total disk activity fluctuates between %50 - %100

  In general, and understanding the answer may vary by manufacturer and model (and driver, and...), in consumer-grade workstations with integrated NICs, does the NIC rely on the CPU for a lot of help (as is typically the case with a USB controller, for instance), or is it fairly intelligent and capable on its own (like, say, the typical Firewire controller)? Or is the question too general to answer? (If it matters, you can assume Linux.) Background: I'm looking at connecting a device (digital television capture) that will be delivering ~20-50 Mbit/sec of data to a somewhat under-powered workstation. I can get a USB 2 High-speed device, or a network-attached device, and am interested in avoiding impacting the CPU where possible. Obviously, if it's a 100Mbit NIC, that's roughly half its theoretical inbound bandwidth, whereas it's only roughly a tenth of the 480 Mbit/second the USB 2 "High Speed" interface.   I currently have my main hard drive split into two partitions. One being Windows 7 with about 600 GB of memory, the other Windows 8 Consumer Preview with about 50 GB. As you can guess it is set up for a dual boot. Today while looking up how to get the C# Facebook SDK for Metro apps I learned about the Release Preview being released. I was wondering: How do I go about getting rid of Windows 8 Consumer Preview and replacing it with the Release Preview? I know i can't just wipe it off my second partition because the dual boot uses Windows 8 to choose the operating system to boot.

The web interface works well but when I connect it to Outlook 2013 I get the following error: There are too many devices syncing with this account. To sync using Outlook, try removing another device that is connected with this account such as a phone or another computer. • Intel cpu hyperthreading on or off for ibm db2?

  Has anyone ever done any database performance comparisons with hyper-threading enabled vs disabled? We are running ibm db2 and I'm curious if anyone has an recommendations for enabling hyper-threading or not. With hyper-threading enabled it makes it quite difficult to do capacity planning for cpu usage. For example. "With 8 physical cores represented as 16 "threads" on the OS and a cpu-bound workload, does that mean when your cpu usage hit's 50% you are actually running at 100%." What real benefits do I gain with leaving hyper-threading enabled on an intel server running DB2? Does hyper-threading help if you're workload is truly disk IO bound? If so, up to what percentage? These are the types of questions I'm trying to answer. Any thoughts?

  In postfix, I'm using relay_host to send an email to an external address using sendgrid, but I get an error about local ricipient table when sending an email from my PHP code. • Semantic is consuming all CPU, causing emacs to hang

  I upgraded to emacs 23.2.1 on Windows 7, not long ago. Since then I've been unable to use Semantic. As soon as I start it, the cpu goes to MAX . (actually, Windows reports it at 50%, but this is a dual core machine, so emacs is effectively consuming 100% of a core). Emacs becomes non-responsive. Is there a particular combination of versions of semantic and emacs I that is unsafe to use together? how would I debug this spin/hang? I've seen other suggestions to change the semantic-idle-scheduler-idle-time, from its default 2 to something very large. I tried that, but got the same results.

  We are thinking about purchasing 4 x EqualLogic PS6510X SANs (the Sumo boxes). Each has 48 x 600GB 10k SAS drives. They will be stacked to form a logical pool of storage (all in the same location). I understand that when you create a RAID group its done on a "per box" basis. So one box could be Raid 50, another Raid 10 etc. My question is, should I make one box a "performance" box ie Raid 10, and the other boxes "standard" ie Raid50? How do people configure their EQL arrays in the real world?

• Yum Update fails due to conflicting perl packages

  Hi I have a CentOS 5.2 i386 Production box with Qmail, LAMP etc now since it showed me that it could upgrade to 5.3, i downloaded all the packages using yum update However, the update fails due to perl packages conflicting I believe that while installing Qmail, I had tried for Mailscanner and thus it upgraded the per itself I read somewhere that we can uninstall the conflicting rpms and then go for the upgrade But, I am about 50 % sure that if I go ahead and uninstall perl, my server will crash like a falling house of cards Also, perl is needed by variety of packages working including vpopmail etc Thus, I request anyone to please tell me if we have a safer solution to this IF there is no solution to this, then can somebody please teach me how to backup and restore Qmail as it is. I can handle the rest of the things I sincerely appreciate those who have read and even thought about my problem In anticipation of a solution Regards amRit

• nagios wrongly reports packet loss

  Lately, on my nagios 3.2.3 install (CentOS5, monitoring ~ 300 hosts, 1150 services) has sdtarted to occasionally report high packet loss on 50-60 hosts at a time. Problem is it's bogus. Manual runs of ping (or its own check_ping binary) finds no fault with any of the affected hosts. The only possible cures I found so far are: run all the checks manually (they will succeed but it may act up again on next check) acknowledge and wait for the problem to go away (may take several ours) I suspect (but have no particular reason other than single rescheduled checks succeeding) that the problem may lay with all the checks being mass scheduled together - in which case introducing some jitter in the scheduling (how?) might help. Or it may be something completely different. Ideas, anyone?

• Nginx Static Content Server Maxing Out?

  I use nginx to serve the static content for a decently busy website of mine. I have the logging disabled, and 4 worker processes enabled with 5,000 connections per worker (which should yield a max connection limit of 20,000. The server is only operating at about 10% CPU usage and 50% ram, but it's very laggy, and sometimes nginx is so slow to respond to the requests, it times out. For a small number of connections, it's fine, but once any load starts occurring (~2,500 connections), it backs up and bogs down. Is there any other bottlenecks or limits that I might be hitting? This is a FreeBSD server, and all the static files are located locally (not NFS). The NIC is an unmetered gigabit, and it's only using around 75 megabit. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

• How do I identify which rewrite rule is being trigger on IIS 7.5?

  I have a set of rewrite rules (offhand, I would say around 40-50) for a given server. It's basically to handle and reroute mangled URLs so that bad links still go to where they're supposed to go. I've come across an URL that is redirecting and I can't figure out which rewrite rule it is applying. My background is Apache and in that case I'd simply enable a rewrite log and look at the logged output to figure out what was happening. Is there an equivalent way to do this in IIS? bonus round Any way for me to view & edit the rewrite rules in a text file rather than the GUI interface?

• Send one invalid email response to sender

  I discovered that my postfix/dovecot configuration isn't rejecting emails. If a person sends an email to an invalid email-address, it just drops it. I am fine with this behavior since I think it discourages spammers from mining emails (I have had some success). Recently a person I did not want to talk to emailed an address I cut off and didn't receive a response back. It would have saved me some problems if they knew to call me instead of sending 50+ emails. How would I configure Dovecot/postfix to send a message back to a sender of an email address and then limit this 1 per domain or unique email. • Bacula vs. BackupPC [closed]

  I have been googling about the differences between them. Bacula has lots of roles BackupPC is easier to configure Bacula works with agent, not rsync (great for Windows backups) It seems that Bacula is most often compared to Amanda though, while BackupPC seems a perfectly lovely and popular backup distribution to. I currently backup my servers with rsnapshot, but I am looking for a professional scalable solution that could also back-up 50 hosts without problems. Preferably a solution that can offer bare metal restores for my Linux servers. I am not looking to reinstall the exact same version of Plesk, the software, etc... Update: I see this ranks high in Google, I found a good article: http://www.serverfocus.org/backuppc-vs-bacula-vs-amanda. I personally think that BackupPC is good for smaller environment, but Bacula, despite the high learning curve, is better for environments that requilre scaling.

[EDIT] I want to connect to places in my home without drilling large holes though the floors. Therefore, I'm looking for a cheap way to connect two GBit switches via fiber. I tried with a media converter (GBit <- multimode fiber) but that costs about 50% throughput. So I was hoping that there is a cheap, small GBit switch which has a GBIC slot).   I've got a desktop system running Windows 7 Professional and a laptop running windows 7 Enterprise in a domain-joined computer and I need to copy around 50 GB of files from the Enterprise machine to the professional one. I'd rather not burn a bunch of DVDs or use my tiny flash drive of 1 GB to do the transfer. How can I mount a drive from one of the computers to the other so that I can just drag and drop? I tried using a homegroup, but the windows 7 Enterprise laptop does not see it from the professional desktop and the laptop cannot make its own homegroup since it belongs to a domain.

  Hi, I managed to setup a SVN (over SSL) server and TortoiseSVN client on Win. I made a Post-Commit Hook for test project. The Post-Commit will update the web dir so the App in PHP can be executed with the newest version. It all works when done over shell. The only problem is, when i commit the changes over the client in Win the change is commited but HOOK throws error post-commit hook failed (exit code 1) with output: Error validating server certificate for 'https://SERVER_IP:443': - The certificate is not issued by a trusted authority.   I am using an alias to a shellscript in postfix... After the script that is called by the shellscript creates a directory it has no permissions at all.. #!/bin/sh umask 002 cat | php /var/www/html/catchmymail rcvemail result is like this: d--------- 2 apache apache 4096 Sep 17 17:25 50 it works for files tho: -rw-rw---- 1 apache apache 5836288 Sep 18 11:21 test Not even setting umask 002 in the shellscript before it hands the mail on changes a thing Setting umask(0002) inside catchmymail has no effect either. Has anyone seen this behaviour before or an idea to save my day?!? This is extremely confusing and actually insane behaviour from what i understand about umask and file permissions.

• Personal wiki on usb / the cloud?

  I'm looking for a personal wiki that can be installed on an usb stick and (more importantly) somewhere on the cloud (dropbox). I've looked at the Wiki Matrix, but I really don't care that much about any of the options, so I end up with a choice between ~50 wikis at the end. Tried out TiddlyWiki but there are some things that really annoy me like the fact that all pages get opened on the same page. It really looks like it'd turn into a giant mess pretty quickly. I'd like to have something that's pretty close in terms of appearance and usability to wikipedia. Hierarchical categories for organization would be really nice. And accessible storage (in case I ever want to convert it to something else).
