• How to get list of defined shortcut keys in the Start menu?

  How can I find out which keyboard shortcuts are defined inside the Start menu? And what shortcuts they are assigned to? Platform: Windows XP SP2 64 bit. Example: I open my main Visual Studio solution with a shortcut key, Ctrl+Alt+M. This is setup by having a shortcut inside the Start menu with: Target: "D:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" D:\dproj\MSQall\MSQuant\MSQuant.sln Shortcut key: Ctrl+ALT+M If a new shortcut is added and its shortcut key is also set to Ctrl+Alt+M then there are now two shortcuts with the same shortcut key (conflict). To prevent this it would be nice to know which shortcut keys are already assigned and to which shortcuts.

• Windows Mobile deletes my Contacts when deleting a partnership

  Sometimes when I reinstall my PC get a new Work PC or buy a new home PC ,ActiveSync, now the Device Center asks me to delete an existing partnership to setup a partnership with the new PC, since only two partnerships are allowed. When I delete that partnership all contacts that originally came from that partnership get deleted too. How can I prevent that from happening. Do I really always have to remember to frequently backup all my contacts in a safe place? How much redundancy is needed. I hat them on one of my PCs and on my phone.

• How do I mount an Exchange mail store from the Windows Command Line?

  Our Exchange server is running Exchange Server 2003 Standard on the Windows Server 2003 platform. We're dealing with the mail store size issue, where if the mail store goes over the limit, it gets dismounted. While we are working with the powers-that-be on a policy that will prevent this happening in the future, I would like to see if it is possible to re-mount the mail store via the Windows CLI. I'm already monitoring the Event Logs and alerting on mail store warnings and dismounts - I'm just tired of getting up at 5am to manually re-mount the store while the political wars ensue. My alerting tools have the ability to execute a batch script when an alert is generated. I would greatly prefer a native CLI option. I'm not too keen on running some random vbscript found on the Internet and I don't really care to spend my time debugging someone else's code. PowerShell might be an option, if it can be triggered from the CLI.

• How to remove a specific category on a selected mail in Outlook 2003 with Macro?

  Hi, I am trying to transform my Outlook2003 into the closest thing to gmail. I started to use categories, which are pretty similar to labels in gmail. I can assign categories automatically with rules, and I can add categories manually. I have also created "search folders", that show all mails with a given category, if they are not in the Deleted Items or Sent Items folders. This part is almost like the Label views in gmail. Two things are missing basically, which should be done with macros (VBA to be precise) which I'm totally inexperienced with. So hence my questions: -Can someone show me a macro to remove the category "Inbox"? That would act exactly like the Archive button in gmail. In fact I want to assign this macro to a toolbar button and call it Archive. I have a rule that adds the Inbox category to all incoming mail. As I said, I have a search folder displaying all mails categorized as Inbox, and I also have an All Mail search folder, that displays all messages regardless whether they have the Inbox category. Exactly like gmail, just the easy archiving is missing. -Can someone show me a macro that would delete the selected mail/mails and also would remove the Inbox category before deletion? I would replace the default delete button with this macro. (Somewhat less important, as in my search folders I can filter messages that are physically placed in the Deleted Items folder, but it would be more elegant not to have mails categorized as Inbox in the trash. • Apply Group Policy to Remote Desktop Services users but not when they log on to their local system

  Running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 with Remote Desktop Services role. I want to hide the servers drives using a GPO, but not the users local drives when they are logged on to their local system. Using a GPO, I went to "User Configuration - Policies - Administrative Template - Windows Components - Windows Explorer" and enabled "Hide these specified drives in My Computer" and "Prevent access to drives from My Computer" and in both used "Restrict all drives". Then under "Security Filtering" for the GPO, I restricted it to the system running Remote Desktop Services and the specific users who will be using RDS. I then applied the GPO to our domain and it worked a little too well. Not only was I successful in getting the GPO to work for RDS users, but it also affected those same users at their local systems as well. I've tried everything I can think of, but can't figure out how to apply this just to the RDS but not at their local system. What am I missing?

• Will Hotmail DELIVER to spam-friendly ISP?

  I have a user who is using Hotmail to communicate with one of our suppliers. Recently, Hotmail started bouncing emails to that address (while other ISPs are working fine.) Hotmail bounce messages contain very little details. Investigating, I found that the supplier's ISP has appeared on a blacklist of ISPs who do not do enough to prevent spamming from their users. (Note: Neither my user nor the supplier are mass-mailing.) In the circumstances, I can understand Hotmail declining to accept emails from the host, or accepting them but being quick to mark them as spam. However, I am surprised that they might refuse delivery. Does this sound plausible to you, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

• How can I see logs in a server after a kernel panic hang?

  I am running a production gentoo Linux machine, and recently there was a situation where the server hung in my co-located premises and when I got there I noticed that the server was hung on what appeared to be a kernel panic hang. I rebooted the machine with a hard reboot and was disappointed to find out that I could not find a shred of evidence anywhere on why the machine hung. Is it true that when I do a hard reboot the messages itself will get lost or is there a setting I can do somewhere say in syslog-ng or maybe in sysctl to at least preserve the error log so that I can prevent such mishaps from happening in the future ? I am running a 2.6.x kernel by the way. Thanks in advance.

• How to reduce disk thrashing (paging)?

  I have 4 GB of RAM, but Windows still thrashes disk sometimes (especially often when an application is minimized for some time and then I activate it again). Completely stupid, because Task Manager shows 2 GB of RAM are free. Is there any way to prevent Windows swapping out program memory? I tried setting Superfetch to cache startup files only (it helped a bit) and turning off paging file (it helped much, and worked well for me in Windows XP; but Windows Vista/Windows 7 don't allow that - it shows "low on memory" message frequently, even when I have 1 GB of RAM free.) What can you advise me to do?

  We have Varnish 3.0.2 running on Amazon's Linux and it works great. We have a ttl of 48 hours for most content pages and much longer for images, PDFs etc. This weekend we've taken the backend down for some maintenance, so I upped the ttl to 5 days earlier in the week. I had assumed that anything in cache would continue to be served for up to 5 days, but much to our disappointment we checked varnishstat this morning and the cache was almost completely empty and varnish was serving "page not found" messages. I know that this is not what Varnish is designed to do, but why would it reset its cache when the backend is down? And how can I prevent it for next time?

  I don't want to prevent all images from loading or stop loading everything, I just want to stop loading an individual image after I've seen that it's probably not something I care about so I can use that bandwidth for something else. My internet is very slow, but I still like browsing sites like tumblr, imgur, etc. that have lots of images. It seems like GIFs are getting more and more common and they can be several megabytes each... my internet just can't handle it. When I right-click a broken/unloaded image in Firefox, there's an option to reload the image. I essentially want the counterpart to that: to right-click a still-loading image and stop the download. Is this possible? Greasemonkey script, extension, I'll take any method.

• rsync - how to set/keep directory permissions?

  I'm using CwRsync to connect from my Windows development machine to a linux webserver : rsync -avuz -e ./ssh --exclude=".svn" /cygdrive/c/xampp/htdocs/project123/ [email protected]:/home/user123/public_html This syncs my development project directory nicely and fast to the server. But after doing this, all directory properties are reset to the local user 'user123' only, so the website is not available anymore. I need to manually reset those properties. Why is this happening, and how to prevent it? PS. coming from a Windows environment I'm having a really hard time understanding rsync. I copied the above command from some examples... just need to get this one small thing working too...

• Is WEP used in conjunction with a wireless access list adequate security?

  I use a Netgear wireless router, with various wireless devices connecting to it. One of my wireless devices doesn't support WPA2 security, so I had to downgrade the security on the router to WEP. We all know WEP is broken, so as an added measure I enabled a wireless access list on the router so that only devices with specified MAC addresses which are in my access list are permitted to connect to the router. I know it is possible to spoof a MAC address from a device for the purposes of accessing a secure network like this. But is it easy? Is using WEP and a wireless access list good enough to prevent most hacking attacks? Or should I do whatever I can to ensure all devices support WPA2 in the future?

• Getting iTunes to play third party AAC files

  I have a library filled with some old MP3 files and I'm in the process of changing them all to AAC for the better sound quality. Obviously I can't just create AAC versions of the files I already have because they would sound worse (lossy compression to converted to more lossy compression), so I'm going to their source and downloading them in a lossless form and using a third party to make them into AAC. Apparently iTunes will not handle AAC files that aren't made with iTunes. Is there a way around this? I've looked at third party programs and would be willing to use them, but since they all require the iTunes/iPod/iEverything driver, I don't know if they would still prevent my files or not. Also before you jump on my back about pirating, these files are from old CDs that I lost years ago. I paid for them. Thanks.

  I have a networked hard drive where I like to store audio/video/software and all sorts of other files for my house. While the software files are all intact and working, many of my video and audio files have been turned into folders! Can anyone explain why this is happening, how I can prevent it, and if it is possible to revert these "folders" back into files. Thanks much! An example of what the folders are named: "Highschool Graduation.avi", "Birthday party.avi", "Somesong.mp3" The HDD is connected to a Linksys E4200 router (Firmware Version: 2.0.37). • Is there a way to make scp run faster on a Mac OS X?

  I'm trying to a upload a Flex generated SWF file from my Macbook (running Snow Leopard) using the command scp main.swf server.com:/ I had setup key authentication to prevent typing the user/pass every time. This process normally takes up to two minutes using my connection at home (768kbps down/300+ kbps up). The interesting part is that when I use WinSCP in my Windows XP machine, the process only takes 30 seconds max. Both my MacBook and Windows XP machine use the same internet connection. The MacBook is connected to the router via cable (which should be faster right?) while the Windows XP connects through Wifi. Let me know if you need additional information in order to diagnose the problem. Thanks!

• Internet Explorer Automation: how to suppress Open/Save dialog?

  When controlling IE instance via MSHTML, how to suppress Open/Save dialogs for non-HTML content? I need to get data from another system and import it into our one. Due to budget constraints no development (e.g. WS) can be done on the other side for some time, so my only option for now is to do web scrapping. The remote site is ASP.NET-based, so simple HTML requests won't work -- too much JS. I wrote a simple C# application that uses MSHTML and SHDocView to control an IE instance. So far so good: I can perform login, navigate to desired page, populate required fields and do submit. Then I face a couple of problems: First is that report is opening in another window. I suspect I can attach to that window too by enumerating IE windows in the system. Second, more troublesome, is that report itself is CSV file, and triggers Open/Save dialog. I'd like to avoid it and make IE save the file into given location OR I'm fine with programmatically clicking dialog buttons too (how?) I'm actually totally non-Windows guy (unix/J2EE), and hope someone with better knowledge would give me a hint how to do those tasks. Thanks! UPDATE I've found a promising document on MSDN: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-ca/library/aa770041.aspx Control the kinds of content that are downloaded and what the WebBrowser Control does with them once they are downloaded. For example, you can prevent videos from playing, script from running, or new windows from opening when users click on links, or prevent Microsoft ActiveX controls from downloading or executing. Slowly reading through... UPDATE 2: MADE IT WORK, SORT OF... Finally I made it work, but in an ugly way. Essentially, I register a handler "before navigate", then, in the handler, if the URL is matching my target file, I cancel the navigation, but remember the URL, and use WebClient class to access and download that temporal URL directly. • My BrowserHelperObject is detected by avg as a malware, what is going wrong.

  Hi i'm building a BrowserHelperObject in c++ for Internet Explorer 8. It is a friendly add-on that gives you fonctionalities in a sidebar. The thing is that when you download the add-on executable from the web, AVG (AntiVirusGuard) detects the executable file as a malware. I did a lot of research and i can't find a way to not being seen as a bad malware. I know that BrowserHelperObject are often seen as malware, but mine is just a good and friendly add-on. Does anyone as info on how antivirus detection works and what can i do to prevent being seen as a malware. What has to be done to the BHO to pass avg detection ? Thank you.

• Dual HDD dual boot Win7/Win7 hibernate corrupts partitions?

  I have two SSDs in my laptop. Both have 2 partitions each one with Windows 7 64bit and another one with OEM stuff on it (SYSTEM_DRV). I use the BIOS boot menu to boot between the drives. I have removed the drive letters so that no partitions of drive 1 are mapped in windows 2 on drive 2 and wise-versa. What I have observered however is that when I hibernate windows 1, boot windows 2 do some work and shutdown then resume windows 1 - the windows 2 partition will get corrupt quite often. Just happened actually - it is shown as "RAW" in the Disk manager instead of NTFS and windows will blue screen at boot. Alternatively I've seen cases where chkdsk will run and will wipe out all security descriptors making the partition completly unbootable. Why am I seeing these corruptions and what can I do to prevent them?

  I just bought the following server IBM System x3950 Server, 4 x 3.0GHz Dual Core, 32GB, 6 x 73.4GB 10K SAS RAID, 256MB BBWC, 2x Power, CD-RW/DVD When i boot it up, it says "Searching for secondary server" and hangs their for almost 10 mins. After 10 mins, it says timeout on searching chassis 2. But after this it proceed to boot the OS properly. But my frustration, i need to wait for almost 15 mins to boot everytime. How do i prevent this error message.

  Hi, Not sure if I really am on the right forum, but if not, just tell me. I have a page that is coded in ASP (not .net) which is used to send email. We are currently having a problem in which the page seem to be sent twice sometime. Upon checking, we found out that those who have this problem are coming from big organisation, so it was suggested that their server might cache the file for some reason. I would like to know, is there a way in HTML (or ASP ) to prevent that from happening ? Or is it in IIS that we must set this up ? Thanks,

• frequent errors with subversion repository on fat32 on USB memory stick

  I keep a copy of a Subversion Repository on a USB memory stick that is formatted with FAT32. I am using TortoiseSVN on XP and command line svn 1.6.x on Ubuntu and OSX with this memory stick. I notice that I need to do an svn cleanup just about every time or updates and commits will not work. I routinely have errors with .lock and *.svn/text-base/** files getting corrupted. Errors tend to be parameter is incorrect or lock file can not be read Sometimes svn cleanup works and sometimes chflags -R nouchg * Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

• Samba does not reload user group members

  I am running a simple samba server setup where users connect to a share which contains folders for specific user groups. The folders are chmod 2770, so only users which are in the correct group can read/write in them. The problem is that if I change group memberships (i.e. remove user from group / add user to group; changes are in sync between clients and server!) samba does not automatically reload the group memberships for the user, so they can still write to groups that they are no longer a member of etc. I either have to reconnect to the share or to restart samba to apply the changes.
