• Use virtual pageviews for all goal tracking

  Hi Pro Webmasters, I'm new to Google Analytics and I'm wondering if it would be cleaner to user virtual pageviews for all the goal tracking on my website instead of using a mix of regular page views and virtual pageviews. I know in most cases this is just semantics but there are multiple pages where the same goal can be achieved and I think it would be cleaner just to fire the same virtual pageview instead of having two different goal pages. Will this model also give developers more flexibility when they do development? I know we are moving to a CMS and urls can get hairy, so I think this might be a good way to make analytics portion of the site "future proof". Any thoughts are appreciated! Thanks.

• Web Hosting Backup/Disaster Recovery Plan - Which Company?

  I've been asked to look after consolidating all of our various company websites onto one host and also provide a disaster recover plan in case the chosen host goes down/out of business/etc. We're most likely going to go with HostGator as our chosen host, however, I'm not sure who to pick for our backup host. HostGator uses cPanel and has the functionality to provide regular full (ie: including configuration) backups of all the sites we host. Ideally I'm looking for a solution where we can provide these backups to another company and within a short period of time they restore all the sites onto their servers and we're back up and running. The whole disaster recover process has to be fairly straight forward from the point of view of what we need to do in case I am unavailable to assist in the disaster recovery process and no one else overly technical is available to assist (ie: take these backup files, send them to this company, and ask them to do this). Any suggestions on which company would be a good choice for this backup solution would be highly appreciated. Thanks, Harry

  This question asks about the ergonomics of a particular keyboard for long programming hours, what I would like to know is about the ergonomics of using a keyboard in general. What are the most significant risks associated with it and how can they best be mitigated? Do the "ergonomic" keyboard designs make a difference and if so which design is most effective? If not do other factors such as wrist-rests, regular exercise or having a suitable height of chair or desk make a difference? Do you have any direct experience of problems deriving from keyboard use and if so how did you resolve them? Is there any good science on this and if so what does it indicate? Edited to add: Wikipedia suggests that there are no proven advantages to "ergonomic" keyboards, but their citation seems pretty old- is that still the current state of play?

  Google's doc on async tasks assumes knowledge of the difference between regular and asynchronously added tasks. add_async(task, transactional=False, rpc=None) Asynchronously add a Task or a list of Tasks to this Queue. How is adding tasks asynchronously different to adding them regularly. I.e. what is the difference between using add(task, transactional=False) and add_async(task, transactional=False, rpc=None) I've heard that adding tasks regularly blocks certain things. • Why use 3d matrix and camera in 2D world for 2d geometric figures?

  I'm working in XNA on a 2d isometric world/game and I'm using DrawUserPrimitives to draw some geometric figures... I saw some tutorials about creating dynamic shadows but I didn't understood why they use a "3d" matrix to control the transformations since the figure I'm drawing is in 2d perspective. I know I'm drawing a 2d figure in 3d but I still can't understand if I really need to work with the matrix. Is there any advantage in using a 3d Matrix to control camera and view? Any reason why I can't just update my vertex's positions by using a regular method since the view is always the same... And since I want to work only with single figures, won't this cause all the geometric figures have the same transformations simultaneously?   I would like to manage my bank accounts in a secure manner on Ubuntu. I saw several applications in the Software Centre, but I don't know which one to choose. I don't need fancy features like stock options. I just have regular accounts which I want to follow, I don't want complicated stuff. As bank data are quite sensitive, I would highly prefer an application that does encryption of the data. Though, if you have a really cool app but it does not have this feature, as long as it offers to store the data in one dedicated place, I could do with encrypting that place. So what tool do you use that could fit my needs?

  I have a given XML document (structure can not be changed) and want to get the comments that are written above the nodes. The document looks like this: <!--Some comment here--> <attribute name="Title">Book A</attribute> <attribute name="Author"> <value>Joe Doe</value> <value>John Miller</value> </attribute> <!--Some comment here--> <attribute name="Code">1</attribute> So comments are optional, but if there is one, I want to get the comment above each attribute. Using /*/comment()[n] would give me comment n, but for n=2 I would naturally get the comment of the third attribute, so there is no connection between attributes and comments Any ideas? Thanks

• file acess slow after deletion of many files

  I recently accidentally created millions of files in one folder (rougly 5 million) and due to limitations I couldn't process them correctly (maximum argument count exceeded for wc / ls and such stuff). So I deleted them, which took quite a while, but now they're gone. I deleted the files with a regular rm. It weren't any system files. So the files are definitively deleted, but the system is very slow on file stuff now. ls, cat and auto-complete by pressing tab freezes the terminal for several seconds. Is this some sort of fragmentation issue? Is it an issue with the files beeing still somehow present?

  Currently, I have a couple of singleton objects where I'm doing matching on regular expressions, and my Patterns are defined like so: class Foobar { private final Pattern firstPattern = Pattern.compile("some regex"); private final Pattern secondPattern = Pattern.compile("some other regex"); // more Patterns, etc. private Foobar() {} public static Foobar create() { /* singleton stuff */ } } But I was told by someone the other day that this is bad style, and Patterns should always be defined at the class level, and look something like this instead: class Foobar { private static final Pattern FIRST_PATTERN = Pattern.compile("some regex"); private static final Pattern SECOND_PATTERN = Pattern.compile("some other regex"); // more Patterns, etc. private Foobar() {} public static Foobar create() { /* singleton stuff */ } } The lifetime of this particular object isn't that long, and my main reason for using the first approach is because it doesn't make sense to me to hold on to the Patterns once the object gets GC'd. Any suggestions / thoughts?

• No BIOS, no video after ubuntu updates

  Hello, I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Precision T3500 Desktop machine. Last week, when I ran the regular updates, upon restart my video disappeared. I could not even see the Dell startup screen or enter the BIOS. When I swapped out the video card (for an older one I had around), the system worked again. So Dell sent me a replacement video card. I put that in and everything appeared to be working again. Then, I ran updates again, and the same thing happened. Replacement video card appears to be broken. No startup messages, no BIOS, no video at all. Does anyone know how Ubuntu updates might be ruining the video cards? The card that keeps "breaking" is an FirePro MV2260. Thanks, RC

  Possible Duplicate: Make your site anti-bot? I have a custom web form on my PHP-based site. Recently it is getting a regular stream of comment-spam postings from a few specific IP addresses. Question: What is a good way to block a small set of blacklisted IP addresses from accessing my site? I was thinking it should be possible using .htaccess to respond with status code 403 (Forbidden) for all HTTP requests from the blacklisted IP addresses, ... but I am not sure exactly how to do that.   This is the code I have in a bash script that runs as a cronjob. The cronjob run as root. /usr/sbin/sendmail [email protected]<<EOF subject:Backup Error! from:backup@server01 $error EOF There is code after this and the email I get is as follows: From the root user on the machine. and the message includes: subject:Backup Error! from:backup@server01 $error EOF More code... that is in the script all the way to the end... I have tried other variations, this is the closest I've got. I tried this in a regular script and it worked properly. Whats going on, and how can I send this email, specifying the subject and form sender?

• Boots up into Terminal

  I am running a 64 bit version of Ubuntu 12.04.1, and I when I boot up, I am thrown (Rather violently. :P) a full-sized terminal, instead of my lovely GUI login screen.. So I looked around and tried the "startx" command, which works like a charm. Only problem is that now, I have no clue how to keep it from booting to the terminal every time, and boot up into the regular GUI with all my stuff. I did install some kernel updates the night before, though I restarted my computer twice after I had done so without a problem. Thanks for your time!

• Possible to use screen lock as timeout? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Any app that tells me to take regular breaks from working? 3 answers What I'd like to do is lock the screen and have it wait a set amount of time (eg 20 mins) before it lets me log back in - so I make myself to have a break from the computer. Is it possible to do this? Thanks EDIT: Thanks for the suggestions - but I don't actually want something to remind me to take scheduled breaks. More something I can click when I realise I'm getting distracted and it'll immediately lock the screen for a fixed amount of time. Or even just lock screen if I can find a way to stop it letting me log in for 20 mins or so.

  We have been getting hit very hard with comment spam as of late. As mentioned in the last post, this is something we typically deal with on a regular basis for the past 6 years, but some weeks are like this week where it is just crazy. Because of the way things are right now, I have disabled the ability to toggle on or off the CAPTCHA controls for comments. I know some bloggers are going to get mad, but we need to see if the lack of CAPTCHA on some blogs is the key cause of SPAM or if they are manually entering the data and filling in the CAPTCHA. I will report back on what we are seeing, but for a few weeks we are just going to require CAPTCHA controls on comments.This has been a public service announcement for Geekswithblogs.net :D Related Tags:
