  • Google Apps Email for new Primary Youtube Email

    - by MLM
I have a YouTube account that I want to change the primary email for but every time I try to add a alternate address it says it is already associated with another google account. The email is a google apps user because I want to manage my domains email through gmail. I have already tried deleting the account and re-creating it to make sure it is not associated with anything. The only way I can add it is if I delete the google apps account but then I can not verify since I need to access the verification email.

  • Objective C and C++ for Game Development

    - by Holland
I'm trying to figure out which language I should begin learning. I've only been programming for about 6 months, with languages like PHP, Java, and C#. I want to learn how to dev games, and while I know in most cases the answer to this would be through C++ (at least, I would think), though I'm still curious about what Objective C can offer in the sense of long term benefit. It seems like there's a chance that Objective-C may actually become more popular than C++ in a few years, and for all I know, it may become the de facto standard development language for games. Still, despite all of this, I really don't know anything, and this is all speculation. Both languages seem very interesting, and obviously can pull a lot of out of themselves. What do you think? Note: despite what some might say, I really don't want to end up using prebuilt engines, and would rather just learn how to make my own. I'm well aware that it takes a lot more time, but I'm quite ok with that.

  • Is there a website like this?

    - by Slawek
Hi guys, because so much questions are closed here i was wondering if there is some website that's really about programmers< you know real programmers, that have a life not codemonkeys. For example i'd like to see what programmers around the world wear, maybe pictures. It's of course related to programming but i think community here is to strict to allow anything that has no "PHP" or "Java" in title. You know, some place where you can ask questions not only related to lines of code but to ... programmers :) For now this subsite feels more than .coding, not .programmers to be honest :) BTW: I saw there's life-style tag... maybe not all hope is lost...

  • Need some advice on Networking research paper topic...

    - by user498541
Hello I need a research topic for my networking paper. This is my first networking course I am taking so I have not gone into the actual protocols such as TCP/ip, HTTP, etc.(I have just begun chapter 4 for of network+). What would you suggest for a relatively easy to understand topic to research for my paper(that is also easy write about)?... I am kinda interested in research video game multi-player networking but I don't know if that's out of my league. -Topic can be on anything related to networking(p2p, internet, server architecture etc) -Paper has to be entirely researched on the internet -2-3 pages in length

  • How to introduce web development to non-programmers?

    - by Gulshan
Once one of my non-programmer friends asked, "I have a cool website idea that I don't want to share. Rather I want to develop it on my own. So, I want to learn web development. Tell me what to do?" And sometimes many other people asked about how to start with web development as a profession. But they are non-programmers or not from Computer Science background. What should I suggest to them? Learning programming from the scratch? Or using CMS-like tools? Or anything else?

  • bash doesn't keep history

    - by yohbs
I run Ubuntu 12.04, and for some reason bash does not keep my command history. the ~/.bash_history file contains only 3 commands that I typed a few months ago. How can I fix this? • Best/Bad practices for code sharing?

    - by sunpech
The more I explore Github, the more I like it. I really enjoy how coding is becoming more social. I'm curious as to if there are any bad practices that programmers should avoid in sharing their code with each other. And in naming bad practices, what are the best practices for code sharing? For example: Is it a bad practice for a single repo to have multiple scripts/projects named 'MiscProjects'? Where this repo, as the name suggest, is a collection of miscellaneous small scripts and projects. This may resemble how a programmer organizes projects on his/her local storage, but it's possibly not optimal for code sharing? Maybe if a good README/documentation is done, it would be better? Or as long as it's well documented, anything goes?

  • Best criteria for choosing a DNS provider : Redundancy, Locations, Cost, IPV6, Reliability

    - by antoinet
What criteria should I use to choose a good DNS provider? Redundancy - Your DNS service should use at least 4 nameservers. You should also check for the use of anycast servers such as Amazon Route 53 and dyn.com services. Worldwide server location - Servers shall be located worldwide, not just in one country! Ipv6 support - It shall be possible to declare an AAAA entry to your server if it supports IPV6 Cost is of course an issue. Some service are free, Amazon Route 53 seems quite cheap. Reliability : SLA is also important, it demonstrate that reliability is measured. Your dns provider shall then state for a refund in case a failure is encountered. Anything else? For reference, a couple of links for more information: http://serverfault.com/questions/216330/why-should-i-use-amazon-route-53-over-my-registrars-dns-servers http://aws.amazon.com/route53/ http://dyn.com/dns/

  • My Interview with Microsoft

    - by Victor Hurdugaci
This post is for those who want to apply or have already applied (but not finished the interview) for a Microsoft Job. The recruitment process is quite similar for everyone and consists of a few steps. Application E-Mail Interview Phone Interview On Site Interview I will tell you my story and how I went through the four phases. 1. Application My blog's title (Ex Nihilo Nihil Fit) means "Nothing Comes Out of Nothing". You can't get a job at Microsoft by not doing anything - this is true for anything else. The first step you need to complete is the application process. For this, many options are available. You can... ... apply online on Microsoft's Careers website as I did ... send your CV to different e-mail addresses (there are some dedicated e-mails for different positions) ... apply through some 3rd party organization (job shop, campus recruitment, job agency, etc) On MS Careers you just have to post your CV and choose the job you want. That's all! No recommendation letter, no cover letter, no nothing. Of course, not every CV passes the selection process. Here are some tips for improving your resume (worked for me): Don't write it just before applying! Write a draft version, wait a few days and then review it. This way you will find a lot of mistakes and stupid things you wrote initially. If you review it immediately after writing, your mind will not be criticism oriented and will just ignore mistakes. Repeat the write-wait-review process as many times as necessary, until you find that the review revealed no mistakes. After you did the final review and the CV is bullet-proof, ask others to review it. They will definitely find inconsistencies and mistakes and this will make you feel stupid. This is good because will open your eyes will make you go into an 'I want to improve' mode. You'll try to correct everything. After you come up with a modified version go again through steps 1 and 2. Repeat this as many times as necessary. [Special thanks to Lucian Sasu, Nadia Comanici, Andrei Ciobanu, Monica Balan and Lavinia Tanase for reviewing my CV!] Make it short and give only relevant facts. Initially, I come up with a 5 pages CV because I wrote every single technology with which I worked. There were a lot irrelevant things, I wrote Windows Workflow Foundation just because I played with it for a few days. I added extensive descriptions for every project, made a personal details section (name, birth date, address, etc) of 1/2 page. Others suggested to cut everything that was not necessary. You don't need to give extensive descriptions, just add a few words. For example, I wrote "VS Image Visualizer - Visual Studio 2008 debug visualizer for images" and added a link to the project's page - you submit formatted andcan embed links. Add something that makes it different. I don't know if this makes a difference, but I added some lines to separate items just like in the picture below. Definitely Microsoft gets thousands of CVs per day. You need something special. Don't lie! Tell exactly what you did and what is the proficiency level of your skills. For example, don't write "Advanced" for UML if you don't know the difference between composition and aggregation. Be realistic and don't under/over estimate yourself. Use the spell chick. Make sure everything is written in correct English and there are no grammar/spelling mistakes. Noddy likes a WC with grammar mi takes. You mght fail just because of that. Once you completed your CV, choose the job that suits best your needs, apply and wait... The waiting is a problem because all these big companies like Microsoft, Google, Mozilla, Apple, etc. will contact you only if they find something interesting in your application. If you're not suitable, then no rejection is sent. I applied for an Intern Software Development Engineer position at Microsoft Redmond. I cannot apply for a full time position because I want to finish the master program on time, in the next summer - an internship is just what I need. 2. E-Mail Interview January 20, 2010. Two months since I submitted the CV. I wasn't hoping anymore that MS will contact me, when I got an e-mail titled: "Victor Hurdugaci ES DK" from Holly Peterson saying: Read more >>

  • Pyro Jam Can Is a DIY Mini Ruben’s Tube

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Earlier this year we showed you how to make a full-size Ruben’s Tube; now make a tiny single-column fire speaker with the Pyro Jam Can. Instructables’ user Patrick needed a simple device to enter into an Instuctables contest centered on fire-themed projects. His contribution, seen in the video above, is a single-column Ruben’s Tube (for the unfamiliar, a Ruben’s Tube is a device through which sound and flammable gas are passed; the resulting flame is modulated by the frequency of the sound). If your next party wouldn’t be the same without a sound system that pumps bass beats and fire, you know where to get started. • My MSDN magazine articles are live

    - by Daniel Moth
Five years ago I wrote my first MSDN magazine article, and 21 months later I wrote my second MSDN Magazine article (during the VS 2010 Beta). By my calculation, that makes it two and a half years without having written anything for my favorite developer magazine! So, I came back with a vengeance, and in this month's April issue of the MSDN magazine you can find two articles from yours truly - enjoy: A Code-Based Introduction to C++ AMP Introduction to Tiling in C++ AMP For more on C++ AMP, please remember that I blog about it on our team blog, and we take questions in our MSDN forum. • .co.uk targeted for google.co.uk .com targeted for google.com

    - by Higgs Boson
We've had a website running on a .co.uk domain for some years, this domain is listed in the SERPS for our brand on both google.co.uk and google.com. We get little traffic from anywhere other than the UK because the website is targeted at the UK market with specific UK keywords. This is great, however we recently purchased the .com domain with the intention of producing a second version of the website targeted to the United States with US specific keywords i.e. targeting and moving in to the US marketplace. We have used Google webmaster tools to set the geographic target for the .com domain to be the US. I think I was expecting ONLY the .com site to show up when searching google.com and only the .co.uk site to show up when searching google.co.uk. However when we search google.com for our 'brand' the .co.uk site is listed in the SERPS. We would prefer the .com to appear in the SERPS on google.com. Is there anything we can do?

  • Review quality of code

    - by magol
I have been asked to quality review two code bases. I've never done anything like that, and need advice on how to perform it and report it. Background There are two providers of code, one in VB and one in C (ISO 9899:1999 (C99)). These two programs do not work so well together, and of course, the two suppliers blames each other. I will therefore as a independent person review both codes, on a comprehensive level review the quality of the codes to find out where it is most likely that the problem lies. I will not try to find problems, but simply review the quality and how simple it is to manage and understand the code. Edit: I have yet not received much information about what the problem consists of. I've just been told that I will examine the code in terms of quality. Not so much more. I do not know the background to why they took this decision.

  • CVV Code For Authorize.com using osCommerce

    - by user3567
Hi I need to add a CVV code for verifying credit cards upon check out on my osCommerece shopping cart. I think this will involve a code for the authorize.net php and the checkout processing php but not sure. Found this great write up, but it is only for the authorize.net php and it doesn't create a filed for the CVV to be keyed. Also it throws an error with the 'echo validate.' Can't seem to find anything in any forums for osCommerce or any place out. Hoping someone here will have some knowledge. Thanks.

  • Deck from London UG 20110616 - Building a Reporting Brick capable of 1.2GBytes/sec and 80K IOs/sec for less than £2K

    - by tonyrogerson
The Reporting Brick concept is not really anything new, it starts the walk toward bringing the work Jim Gray and Tom Barclay et al did on CyberBricks up-to-date in terms of current kit. A reporting brick is simply a box built from commodity kit utilising commodity SSD, namely the OCZ IBIS drives to gain extremely high levels of performance for a fraction of the cost required for typical server and san installs today. I'll write up over the next few months as I work further on the concept, for now the deck attached summarises some of the ideas around it, the deck was presented at last nights London SQL Server User Group, I will be presenting it again in Edinburgh on the 29th June and other locations later in the year. • Upgrading to WCF RIA Services v1.0 and Ria Services Toolkit

The kind folks on the Silverlight and RIA Services teams have come out with v1.0 of RIA Services. However, the instructions they provide can be a bit misleading as to What does what.Heres the skinny:1) You can download the Silverlight 4 Tools installer, dated 5/13/2010 here. This will uninstall previous interim versions of the SDK, runtime and RIA Services you do not have to uninstall anything before running it.2) However, the above WILL NOT refresh the RIA Services Toolkit. That you must uninstall...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • SQLAuthority News – Download Whitepaper Using SharePoint List Data in PowerPivot

    - by pinaldave
One of the many features of Microsoft SQL Server PowerPivot is the range of data sources that can be used to import data. Anything, from Microsoft SQL Server relational databases, Oracle databases, and Microsoft Access databases, to text documents, can be used as data sources in PowerPivot. In this paper, I explain one of the new and upcoming data sources that people are excited about – SharePoint list data in the form of Atom feeds. This white paper goes on to explain the different ways you can import SharePoint list data into PowerPivot, what types of lists are supported, various components that need to be installed to use this feature, and where to get those components. Download and read this whitepaper. • AjaxToolKit - ModalPopup conflicts with the current stable version

    - by Guilherme Cardoso
For those who are using the current stable version of AjaxToolKit (40 412) will face an annoying problem. The ModalPopup cannot be used together with an UpdatePanel and one textbox. This is because during the postback, the value of the textbox will be changed and added a comma. That is, if we use a ModalPopup to have a form and then we add a database, the value "Antonio" in the text box will be entered as "Antonio." I've been researching a bit and this bug is even launching this version. To counter this I'm using the stable 30 512 May 2009 - http://ajaxcontroltoolkit.codeplex.com/releases/view/27326 One detail I noticed was that the ModalPopup OkControlID on the property. If we define the event does not occur (example: If this button is add the data to the database, the panel controlled by ModalPopup disappears but not to add the event occurs). Therefore it is best not declare anything on this property, it works without problems the same.

  • How common are "bandage" fixes?

    - by gablin
Imagine the following scenario: You've detected that your (or someone else's) program has a bug - a function produces the wrong result when given a particular input. You examine the code and can't find anything wrong: it just seem to bog out when given this input. You can now do one of two things: you either examine the code further until you've found the actual cause; or you slap on a bandage by adding an if statement checking if the input is this particular input - if it is, return the expected value. To me, applying the bandage would be completely unacceptable. If the code is behaving unexpectingly on this input, what other input that you've missed will it react strangely to? It just doesn't seem like a fix at all - you're just shoveling the problem under the rug. As I wouldn't even consider doing this, I'm surprised at how often the professors and books keep reminding us about how applying "bandage" fixes is not a good idea. So this makes me wonder: just how common are these kinds of "fixes"?

  • GTK equivalent to MS Spy++

    - by zetah
Spy++ comes with paid version of MS Visual Studio as utility that gives you a graphical view of the system’s processes, threads, windows, and window messages. and it's not only utility on Win32 that offers this feature, but I use it as popular example. It lists all UI elements of all running applications, and user can use "Find Tool" to locate UI element of interest and get response dialog with versatile information about that object, like UI control name, text contents, and many other data of potential interest to a programmer. I'm interested in similar GTK application which can at least return GTK UI element (widget) name and extracted text contents of that element of arbitrary running process. I couldn't find anything related using Google
