• Ralink RT3060 Driver not working

  I am new to linux. I was using fedora and now switching to Ubuntu for a try. On Fedora my wireless network card was working OK from the OS install (I didnt had to do anything for it to work) On Ubuntu, with the lspci -v command, I get: Network controller: Ralink corp. RT3060 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R Subsystem: Ralink corp. RT3060 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R Flags: bus master, slow devsel, latency 64, IRQ 20 Memory at fe9e0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K] Capabilities: <access denied> Kernel driver in use: rt2800pci Kernel modules: rt2800pci But I am not able to find any wireless network. • Firefox messages in /var/log/messages

  I happened to be browsing through /var/log/messages for another reason, and I stumbled across some messages apparently related to Firefox like this: Apr 5 15:36:59 myserver kernel: [18091.188462] type=1503 audit(1333658219.144:19): operation="open" pid=6396 parent=1 profile="/usr/lib/firefox-11.0/firefox{,*[^s][^h]}" requested_mask="::r" denied_mask="::r" fsuid=1000 ouid=0 name="/shr/RiverTrip.gpx" which are really puzzling me because I really don't see why Firefox would know about these files let alone output messages about them. The /shr directory is an NTFS partition I set up on my laptop so I can access it with either Ubuntu or Windows XP. The messages are consistently showing up for a few of the files in that directory, but not all. I haven't even looked at those files or done anything else with them in a long time! I have no idea what's special with those files; they appear to be picked at random as far as I can tell. I am using Ubuntu Release 10.04 (lucid), Kernel Linux 2.6.32-38, GNOME 2.30.2, Firefox 11.0 . I hope someone can explain these spooky messages!

• How to re-enable function keys in byobu?

  I was using byobu on Ubuntu 11.10 Server and I needed to hit a function key in an app, so I hit F9 to bring up the config menu and switched the keybinding set from "f-keys" to "screen-escape-keys". That worked, but now I can't re-enable all the f-keys. I found a program byobu-config that brings up the menu again, and I can switch back to screen keys from there. This fixes things for new screen processes, but the effect on the current screen session is weird: it disables the ctrl-a (screen) keys and restores F2-F8, but F9-F12 still don't do anything (they're just passed on to the foreground process). What's up with this? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Convert DVD to MKV (et al) without transcoding/recompression

  Like a lot of people, I have a lot of DVDs. But we also have a stupid amount of disk space and a media centre (Boxee) so the DVDs are getting less and less use. It would be nice to convert our DVDs into something more relevant to our needs. I've dabbled with DVD ripping before but whereas I'd usually transcode down to a smaller picture size with a better video compression algorithm, this takes a silly amount of time. I don't have a couple of hours available for each disk. (Sidebar: is there dedicated, Linux-friendly hardware to improve h264 encoding performance?) So I was wondering if there's anything that take the DVD filesystem, De-CSS it, and then stitch together any the VOBs that make up the main part of the film and package that up in a wrapping format like MKV. A bonus would be if it could grab the subtitles and stick them in too but that's not a requirement as Boxee can grab the subtitles online if it needs to.

• Programmers and Database Professionals in Performance Based Companies

  Anybody here work for a company (or know of someone that does) in the fields of programming or anything related to DBs and not have set work hours? Where you are paid for performance rather than how many hours you sit in a chair at the office? Any project / company I have been apart of always has pretty strict primary hours with the "great opportunity" / expectation to stay until the job is done. Is this type of flexibility really feasible in a group environment in these fields? Would pay for performance work within a company in these fields? With having strict primary hours I notice a lot of inefficiencies. Some weeks or days there is only so much that can be done (for whatever the reason may be) and if your work is done it doesn't help moral to force someone to stay for 8 hrs/day or 40hrs/week if the next week they may have to pull a 60+hr work week. I know that a lot of flexibility can come from working independently or as a consultant so this question really does not encompass those types of positions.

• A deque based on binary trees

  This is a simple immutable deque based on binary trees. What do you think about it? Does this kind of data structure, or possibly an improvement thereof, seem useful? How could I improve it, preferably without getting rid of its strengths? (Not in the sense of more operations, in the sense of different design) Does this sort of thing have a name? Red nodes are newly instantiated; blue ones are reused. Nodes aren't actually red or anything, it's just for emphasis.

• Making profit - Adsense contains too many stopwords

  I was thinking of using Adsense, but after I've read about the stopwords policy... Too many words are banned: "a**, s**t, id**t, a****le, bu****it," etc.. That generally means that I cannot use Adsense, unless I edit my posts. How else would I go about making some profit out of my site? I don't want to use things like popups, text-link ads, I can't post many shoplinks, and my site is too small to sell adspace. For specific reasons, I also don't do videos, am not planning on starting a forum or premium content, or anything very close to what's in this sentence. The reason for this post is basically the fact that I've seen sites without any ads, huge sites, and I started to wonder: how do they make money? That was Gizmodo to be precise. Some info about my site: It's a blog where I review games and post news. There is no forum, no registration.

• Do employers hiring for Software jobs care about the classes you took in CS masters program?

  I'm torn between two classes right now for next semester( Software Design and Advanced Computer Graphics ). I would enjoy Advanced Computer Graphics more, but I feel the software design class would help me when approaching anything I ever build for the rest of my career. I feel though I could just buy the book( I already have both books actually ) of the Software Design class and go through it, if I wanted. But think it would be a bit tougher to pick up the Advanced Computer Graphics class on my own. So do employers look at the graduate classes you've taken to decide if you would be a good fit or not? I think more importantly what I'm wanting to know is if I wanted to work for a high-end software company like Apple or Google would a company like that be more impressed by someone that took software engineering classes or hardcore CS classes?

• Brainworkshop won't go fullscreen

  I am unable to run brainworkshop in fullscreen mode. After correctly changing the config.ini file to launch the script in fullscreen mode all I get is a window of the same size as before but with no frame or title bar, aligned to the top right (below the menu bar and to the right of the edge of the screen). I tried posting a screenshot but as I'm a new user I wasn't allowed to... I tried looking around in the pyglet files to see if I could find anything that might be causing this but it's all beyond me. Any suggestions? Right after posting this I relaunched the script and now the same borderless, resizeable window is launched aligned to the bottom right hand corner of the screen... I'm running ubuntu 12.04 and brainworkshop 4.8.4.

• How do I remove webapps completely?

  I'd like to be able to remove webapps from my system, I don't want any of the packages associated with it. But trying to remove it I am told there are several other packages that require it. Please change this, I don't like the idea of webapps and I want it gone. I'm tired of getting annoying popups that don't explain anything asking me to install something! It feels like a huge security breach and the user is given no information as to what they are choosing. This is a very bad decision on Canonicals part. I should be working for them, something like this would never ship.

• Drivers Unresponsive, Only Ubuntu 8.0 can install

  I tried to install through boot through disk, but the windows set-up says there's no hard drive. The new ubuntu cd's i've made do not work. I can't update anything on old ubuntu. This is all due to my computer turning off during a recent version upgrade of ubuntu. Kernel error? idk. Going throught my computer, none of my media drivers are responsive, or cd writing drivers, and I guess I have no hard drive (only old ubuntu can read?). Serious need of help, I cant write college papers on this....

• Web services, J2EE, Spring, DB integration project ideas - maybe data mining related?

  I am a graduate Computer Science student (Data Mining and Machine Learning) and have good exposure to core Java (3 years). I have read up on a bunch of stuff on the following topics: Design patterns, J2EE Web services (SOAP and REST), Spring, and Hibernate Java Concurrency - advanced features like Task and Executors. I would now like to do a project combining this stuff -- over my free time of course -- to get a better understanding of these things and to kind of make an end to end software (to learn the best design principles etc + SVN, maven). Any good project ideas would be really appreciated. I just want to build this stuff to learn, so I don't really mind re-inventing the wheel. Also, anything related to data mining would be an added bonus as it fits with my research but is absolutely not necessary since this project is more to learn to do large scale software development.

• System displays "File system maintenance error, press ctrl+d" while booting

  In my office I've Ubuntu 8.10 desktop installed and it's running for a long time. When ever the system is started, I'll get a file system maintenance error and something it's prompted for the root password or (press ctrl+d to continue). After pressing Ctrl+D the system normally boots up. I could not resolve this issue for a long time and I think something should be done in the fstab file. I'm not sure to do anything and expecting the experts here to help to perfectly fix this. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

• Which iPhone/iPod Hardware to Support for iPhone Game

  I'm coming from a background of Android. I would like to figure out what kind of iBlah device hardware I need to support for iPhone game development. From my research, it seems that I need to support both iPod and iPhone. But which versions of hardware? is 3G still used? What about 3GS? For example, the -S phones seem to have dual core instead of single-core CPUs. I also worry about performance. In Android, I had a severely low-end phone, which meant pretty much anything that ran okay there ran okay on other phones. For iPhone, how do I figure out what to support in terms of performance?

• genetic algorithm for leveling/build test

  I'm starting o build a online PVP (duel like, one-to-one) game, where there is leveling, skill points, special attacks and all the common stuff. Since I never did anything like that, I'm still thinking about the maths behind the level/skill/special balances. So I thought good way of testing the best/combo builds would implement a Genetic Algorith. It'd be like that: Generate a big portion of random characters Make them fight, level them up accordingly to the victories(more XP)/losses(less XP) Mate the winners, crossing their builds, to try to make even best characters Add some more random chars, emulating new players Repeat the process for some time, or util find some chars who can beat everyone butts So I could play with the math and try to find the balance where the top x% chars would be a mix of various build types. So, is it a good idea, or there are some other easier method to do the balance? PS: I like this also, because it sounds funny

• Should I use C style in C++?

  As I've been developing my position on how software should be developed at the company I work for, I've come to a certain conclusion that I'm not entirely sure of. It seems to me that if you are programming in C++, you should not use C style anything if it can be helped and you don't absolutely need the performance improvement. This way people are kept from doing things like pointer arithmetic or creating resources with new without any RAII, etc. If this idea was enforced, seeing a char* would possibly be a thing of the past. I'm wondering if this is a conclusion others have made? Or am I being too puritanical about this?

• GParted doesn't see any partition

  What I am trying to do couldn't be more logical I think. I have a 40gb drive with two partitions, Xp and Ubuntu. I have dual boot, everything boots and works perfectly. I have about 9gb free in the Windows partition When I run Gparted I only see 40gb unallocated space, booting from Gparted Live CD. What the hell is going on ? I've read everywhere this is a common problem, however it has no sense something like this remains unsolved by gparted developers, considering what I am trying to do is the very basic step anybody wanting to migrate from Windows to Linux would od Something like this honestly doesn't give anything else than frustration Could anybody on this forum be so kind to explain whats' going on ? • Synaptic: Requires installation of untrusted packages

  I am completely new to the forums and almost completely new to Linux. I am running Chrubuntu on an Acer C7 and I've been having trouble installing anything in the Ubuntu Software Center. Based on some advice in another thread I tried to install Synaptic, which seems like it does the same thing except it actually works, but I get the same error message with that as I have with every other program I've tried installing. This is all I get under the details: libept1.4.12 librarian0 rarian-compat synaptic Any help with some simple step by step instructions on how to fix this, and will Synaptic basically be able to replace the Software Center?   My laptop housing my life in entirety decided to go south this last weekend, cant blame it because I wanted it to do things that not even normal people :)  but it corrupted and could not get it going no matter what I tried. Imagining what I would loose (my POC's, Couple of VM's and lots and lots of documentation) pushed me to try anything short of reinstall.   I have the following dilemma with the links of a wordpress blog that I work with, I don't know if the way it creates the link to the images is ok or not so good. For example: Article URL: http://test.com/prima-de-riesgo/ Image URL belonging to the article: http://test.com/prima-de-riesgo/europa/ So what I'm worried about is the repeating "prima-de-riesgo" part. • A glitch after Ubuntu Installation. Cannot boot Ubuntu

  I am trying to create a dual boot of Ubuntu 10.10 with Windows 7. My hard disk allocation were as follows: Windows 7 NTFS 100 GB /boot EXT4 200 MB SWAP LINUX SWAP 4 GB / EXT4 46 GB After installation is complete, instead of getting the boot screen of Ubuntu, it directly boots from windows 7 without asking anything. What is wrong? I run the Live Cd again using USB drive and I see that the \boot, and \ are occupied with most likely Ubuntu data. Now How do i point my Laptop to point to Ubuntu Boot instead of Windows Boot

• I'm building a theme for tumblr and the {HasPages} doesn't seem to work properly.

  I've put the HTML draft of the theme so far, with minor CSS edits. Currently I have all the block posts and everything else that's essential to a tumblr theme but I can't seem to get the {HasPages} block to work properly. I've tested it on a different tumblr, also. There are pages created and I already have provided some basic CSS for it just in case. But there isn't anything showing up. Has anyone has this problem and if so, is there a solution I'm missing? The code to display the pages is included. {block:HasPages} <ul> <li><a href="/">Home</a></li> {block:Pages}<li><a href="{URL}">{Label}</a></li>{/block:Pages} </ul> {/block:HasPages} Also, is this a valid web masters' question.
