• Why is dwm.exe using so much memory?

  I've scoured the web, but I'm sick of reading "scan your computer for viruses" and "upgrade your RAM" on answers to similar questions to this. I understand that dwm.exe is for (simply put) caching bitmaps for things like Aero-peek and similar, but as far as I have read it shouldn't be using vast amounts of memory. My colleague and I both have 4GB of RAM, Core 2 Duo, blah, blah -- essentially they're pretty capable. His dwm.exe is running at around 30mb, mind is currently running at about half a gig, though it does fluctuate quite a lot. This is the same while running the exact same applications (currently Zend studio, FireFox (with firemin - low memory usage), Outlook). Every so often I will get a notification asking me if I want to switch to Aero Basic because it's using too much memory, and sometimes it will just switch itself to basic and let me know why. I know it's possible to stop it switching, but I want to know why it is using too much memory otherwise it's just papering over the cracks. One thing to add is this seems to have started after a robbery on Monday, where two of my monitors were stolen, and I had to temporarily use a couple of alternative monitors. I am now using brand new monitors but the problem is the same. All drivers installed and working seemingly fine. Any ideas why the usage is so high? We are using windows 7 64-bit Professional.

• Best Practice - SQL 2012 & IIS in VMWare

  We are pretty new to VMWare and looking for some thoughts on our environment. We have a VMWare cluster that has on one host: VM#1: MS Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise & SQL Server 2012 VM#2: MS Windows 2008 R2 Standard & IIS The IIS asp.net app talks directly to the SQL Server. We had this similar environment on physical servers a few months ago and just recently moved to the virtualized environment. Regarding the setup, we have not tweaked any of the vm resource parameters -- all is set as standard and all is working. What is observed is that the VMs seem to spool down and we get lags in response. Of course this sin't as fast as the old physical environment, but I am wondering if: *is it a good idea to run the SQL server and the IIS server on the same host? They are the only two VMs on it. The host is a new Dell R620 with 192 gb mem. does it make sense to change any CPU or memory reservations when it doesn't seem like there is any contention is there a way to keep the VMs spooled up to eliminate delays? This is a brand new squeaky clean vanilla install. What are your thoughts?

• Having problems VPN'ing into our Windows server network.

  Hi folks, When two people (on their notebooks) try to VPN to our office, only the first user gets a connection. the second user always times out. Is it possible for VPN to allow two or more people, using / sharing the same EXTERNAL PUBLIC IP to connect/authenticate? Now for some specifics (cause those two statements are very broad). I'm not in the IT Dept. I'm a developer. Our IT Dept don't really care (sigh) so it's up to me to fix this crap. Our office is all Microsoft shop stuff - servers and clients. We also have a firewall (watchguard brand?) and some other crazy setups (yes i know, it's very vague :( ). So i'm wondering - is it possible for multiple users, from the same public IP, to connect via VPN to a windows server? i'm under the impression - yes. But it is possible that this only happens when the clients (who are all behind the single, public IP .. otherwise they will have their OWN ip's) need to have UPnP running or something? this is killing me and i need to start asking the right questions cause these guys don't know what they are doing and i can't work without this happening. I know this is a vauge question with so many 'if-what's-etc' but maybe some questions/suggestions from you guys might start to lead to solving this problem. • Host ::1 resolves to remote IP

  /etc/hosts files usually have this line, ::1 localhost. I thought ::1 was the equivalent of 127.0.0.1/localhost, and from my reading it seems to be the IPv6 version. So I was using it in Apache for firewalling, "Allow from ::1" and it only allowed local. Then suddenly that stopped working, so I pinged ::1 and got a remote IP address. I tracerouted it and it went through my ISP, through some Microsoft server, then another half dozen steps of asterisks... I'm not sure why this would be (the remote IP), but it doesn't seem good. I grep'd my hard drive for the remote IP and it doesn't appear anywhere. Is this some indicator that I'm being hacked, or normal behavior? Maybe my IPv6 settings are wrong? (This is a brand new MacBookPro with Snow Leopard.) Any ideas about this would be great - what is ::1 supposed to be, why would it be remote, should I be worried, how do I get it back to localhost? • Switched from DVI to HDMI, possible audio artifacts?

  I'm using an ASUS VH236H monitor and an EVGA GeForce 570 GTX both of which are brand new. My monitor has an audio out port for speakers/headphones so I plugged in my headphones and made a random selection from my library when I noticed two things: There are static-like artifacts during "louder" parts of songs. There's what seems to be a volume cap in place. When I crank the volume past 100% in VLC the decibel level does not truly increase but the amount of static does. The cable is not new; I yanked it off of my PS3 when my DVI cable broke. It has been used a good amount on my HDTV and PS3 so I doubt it's a matter of burn-in. I like the way the setup works with an HDMI cable as opposed to DVI because my headphones barely reach my rig whereas I have plenty of slack when they're plugged into my monitor. Thanks in advance for any support. Note: I'm using a high quality HDMI cable from monoprice, AKG K702 headphones, and VLC media player.

• linux routing issue

  Hi! I have 2 linksys routers which has linux running on it and using tomato firmware.. both has internet lines plugged on but only 1 acts as DHCP server (router 1) What I am having to achieve is that all packets goes to router 1 from internal IPs want to access internet will go out to that internet line but from 1 specific port, if router 1 detects packets from a specific source port (for ex: http port: 80), it will redirect that packet to router 2 and goes out to the internet from there.. I have found some documents which give solution that I will need a linux servers with 2 ethernet cards and then we plug both internet lines on that server and routing base on it but I do not want to do that because my boss does not want to have an extra work mantaining that server, besides, he says that the router itself already a linux one so why.. I tend to agree his points.. Can it be done or a seperate linux server acting as a router is a must? Thank you all in advance and really look forward in your replies.. • Converting PDF eBooks into a Kindle format

  Over the past couple of years I've amassed quite a collection of guides, tutorials and ebooks in PDF format. A lot of these are quite useful for work, especially PDF documentation, and rather than have to be at a computer every time I want to read how to do something in Sitecore or to read through a software testing ebook I'd like to do it on my brand-spanking-new Kindle. However, even though there is now a native PDF reader on the Kindle due to the nature of PDF's they are practically unreadable. The text doesn't wrap due to how PDF's are sized and so far after a bunch of Google searches I've yet to find a viable solution to get my PDF's converted into a readable Kindle format. Sometimes these books have code or pictures/tables in them, but most of the time they're text-heavy and to be honest I'd be surprised if there wasn't a free tool to handle the converting of PDF to one of the (seemingly many) Kindle formats. So, can anyone help me out with this? EDIT: I've tried Calibre, and have checked their forums to play with some of the advanced settings, yet the solutions available seem to be extremely poor, especially if the book you're attempting to read contains equations, code, or anything outside of plain text. I've also tried Amazon's conversion service, which wasn't much help with such documents. The best way I have found so far is to build the entire thing over again in ePub or RTF format and convert to MOBI from there. This works for text-heavy books with tables, but anything technical still isn't covered. Can anyone help with this?

• Why do I need a managed switch and which one should I buy?

  I bought a 2nd router and I want both routers to have direct WAN access to the modem. One of the 2 routers directs VOIP traffic to a telephone line port. This VOIP service is provided by the cable carrier which also leases the modem & the router. The cable company technician told me that this VOIP line uses IPv6 addressing and therefore I must employ an IPv6 capable/compliant Giga Hub/Switch or my telephone line won't work anymore. Pls advise me (brand/model) an IPv6 compliant, 2 port, switch to purchase. Pls educate me: By reading this forum I thought that hubs broadcast traffic to all ports, regardless of which input/output is being used and so, theoretically, they have nothing to do with IP. Correct? Same story for unmanaged switches, where the only difference is that these latter devices route traffic only to those ports which are detected to be in use. Correct? I also understood that unmanaged switches route traffic simply by detecting hardware use and not by selecting specific IP traffic. Correct? Finally, there are managed switches which DO select traffic based on IP and, therefore, only these managed switches are involved with IPv6... Why would my cable company explicitly tell me, over and over, that I must use an IPv6 compliant switch? Why would they need a managed switch instead of an unmanaged one? • Is Ubuntu a viable replacement of Windows XP for small enterprise environments?

  Hi all, I'm a newbie systems administrator, so any advice would be great. I would like to setup ubuntu 8.04 lts in a small office of consulting in management (around 50 workstations) instead of Windows XP. I would install MS Office 2007 via WINE (*). It would be a fresh installation, so the migration would be less of a pain. The new setup would also include a small server as document repository and a backup server by now. Later, I would install another goodies like a IM server, a document management solution, and whatnot collaborative tool. What do you advice in this scenario? Do you think is viable? Should I try to convince my managers this is a good idea? I consider myself as a fair experienced user in both systems, and I'm the only guy in charge of everything. I need to cut costs down, and I think that antivirus and antimalware software are a waste of money and time. Is this good idea?, or should I resign and try to lock down the Windows systems and install AV software? Is there anything else in this setup I'm not foreseeing? (*) The only catch in my test machine until now had been that Office SmartArt doesn't work properly, the rest of Office 2007 may seem ok.

• System and Router configuration for setting up a home firewall based on Zentyal

  I am not much of a system administrator, so please be patient if this looks too simple for you. I have a several computers at home, and all of them connect using an ADSL modem/router (and Wireless AP). I have been attacked several times (mainly from Russia and Ukraine), so I thought I should have some kind of firewall, besides the ESET firewall on my Windows 7. So now I have these (new) configuration: I have a small ADSL modem (Zyxel brand) which has only one Ethernet port. This modem is used to connect to internet and is configured in NAT mode. The interface has is configured with IP address 192.168.1.1. I have an old PC and I have installed zentyal on it. It has two Ethernet ports, eth0 and eth1. Eth0 is connected to the Zyxel modem with IP 192.168.1.2 and is checked as the WAN interface (external). I have another ADSL modem which is also a router with 4 Ethernet ports and Wireless AP. One of the Ethernet ports is connected to eth1 on Zentyal box. The Ethernet port's IP is 192.168.2.1 and Zentyal's eth1 is 192.168.2.2. Now, I want to enable other computers to connect to internet through the router both using Wireless and Ethernet. The problem is that I don't know how to configure the router so it routes connections to the Zentyal box. Does anyone have any clue? Again I am sorry if this looks stupid. Thanks.

• Screen occasionally flashes black when under load, sometimes does not recover

  I've built a brand new machine, but to my horror my monitor occasionally flashes black for around a second, then returning to normal. This happens under load (watching videos / playing games) but only sometimes; e.g. it doesn't occur in "Batman: Arkham City" but does in "XCOM: Enemy Unknown". When watching videos, it also occurs when not watching them full-screen, and it sometimes even occurs when the machine isn't doing anything, just sitting at the desktop and moving the mouse around. Has anyone ran into this problem and knows of any solution? Additionally, sometimes after the black screen, it won't return to normal, instead turning completely corrupt. In these cases even quitting the application doesn't help, but physically disconnecting and reconnecting the monitor fixes the problem. This problem did not occur on my earlier machine which used the same physical monitor. Additional details: Windows Server 2012, configured as Windows 8, with latest updates installed NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti, with latest driver installed Ample amounts of CPU and RAM for playing the above games and for watching videos. • mouse pointer moving on its own

  After two months of working correctly, I am experiencing an strange and very annoying problem. My mouse pointer is moving on its own. If I move the mouse to the left, as soon as I stop the movement, the pointer runs again to the far right. This makes the mouse totally unusable. The mouse device is an optical USB mouse. It is not a problem with the mouse itself. I have tried with another mouse, same problem. (both mice are OK, I have tried both mice on my laptop, both worked perfectly) Have tried different surfaces, too. Same problem. System is Windows XP Pro SP3. Computer is a desktop PC two months old. I suspected it could be a problem with the mouse driver. But both mice are from different brand, so I suppose they use different drivers. What else can I try? any suggestion?

• My bios datetime is resetting to 2002, what should I do?

  I bought my PC brand new in mid-2006. I'm currently dual booting Win XP 32 bits and Ubuntu Karmic Desktop. Over the last few days, when I boot up my computer, it tells me that my bios time is not set. I now have 2 choices for booting in: Windows first: I can safely get into Windows but the date now shows 2002/01/01 at 00:00. From there, Windows will not sync its time to its servers, I have to manually advance the date myself. I can also advance the date from the bios at startup. Ubuntu first: Since the time date is still set at 2002, the boot system cannot find my linux partition. I can fix that issue by booting to Windows, set the date properly and the linux issue will be fixed automatically. The above two issues can also be fixed if I manually set the bios date/time manually when I turn on my computer. It's annoying to do that every single day since I shut down my PC daily. Am I having an OS issue or a hardware issue? How can I resolve this problem?

• Performance decrease in every game and application

  When I start a game, initially it runs smoothly, but after a couple of minutes, the performance gradually decreases to the point of being unplayable (1-2 FPS). The sound also starts to lag at this point. This does not happen every time I start my PC, usually exiting the game, rebooting, then starting the game again solves the problem, and I can play with perfect FPS for as long as I want. I could not find any deterministic reason when this happens and when doesn't. It happens in every game I tried (SWTOR, Diablo 3, Skyrim), and not even games, but simple applications like a browser or the Control Panel can get unusably slow. This is a brand new PC I bought three months ago, and this problem occurs since the first day I've been using it. Could you provide any advice how to further diagnose the problem? I tried to reinstall Windows, and tried different video card drivers, but it did not help. It would be important to know whether this is a hardware or software problem, because I can use the warranty if it is a hardware issue. (I did not want to return the PC yet, because I can't reproduce the issue deterministically.) • Light Blue Monitor Screen

  I have seen this before with an older monitor that over time, the monitor colours change to a light blue haze. This has started happening with an older monitor of mine now (A GigaByte Monitor) and although none of the pins are bent and it's a brand new machine, there is no reason, other than aging that it should show the light blue screen. Perhaps it is just time for a new monitor, but if there is a way of saving it still. I would appreciate the insight. Perhaps there is something I have not tried, perhaps it has something to do with the new machine instead of the monitor? I had the monitor plugged into two other machines over the weekend and didn't have this problem. So I am not quite sure what to make of it. Many thanks! EDIT: I must also add that when I plugged the monitor into the older machines, I had the VGA converter attached to the end of the newer DVI output. Which, when plugged into the newer PC, I don't need of course.

• Server side url scanner for malware, spyware , viruses and protect my visitors

  I have a forum/groups site that contains a lot of external URLs, sometimes direct download links. I want to protect my visitors from possible attacks from malware sites as they are mot likely to click on these links. CUrrently I implement DBL (spamhaus) but thats not enough. I want to run a background task to check the outgoing links first. I have looked at similar questions in StackOverflow (wrongly posted there) and here but fail to find a question same as mine or a good answer. People have suggested ClamAV , I don't believe it can detect Web hosted malware sites and its has a lot of missed detection. I have looked at google safe browsing service ( http://code.google.com/apis/safebrowsing/developers_guide_v2.html very complicated to implement or maintain plus midway I get lost :S ) I can go for commercial solution, anything to protect the visitors and my site brand. But I would like to hear the opinion of server admins and if anyone has implemented such a service. My Server is basic CentOS LAMP stack. thank you very much in advance.

• 403 Error when accessing vhost directive

  I'm having some troubles with setting up my webserver (Centos 5.8). It's a brand new server and I'm trying to set a vhost to the following dir: /home/exo/public_html However whenever I restart httpd I get the following warning: Code: Starting httpd: Warning: DocumentRoot [/home/exo/public_html] does not exist Yes the directory does exist. So whenever I visit the domain exo-l.com it gives me a 403 error. This is my config file (I put this inside my httpd.conf because the files in conf.d were not included for some reason. Or at least my newly created vhost conf file, but that has 0 priority for now) <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /home/exo/public_html ServerName www.exo-l.com ServerAlias exo-l.com <Directory /home/exo/public_html> Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> </VirtualHost I'm completely clueless because this should work as far as I know. httpd is being run as apache:apache i tried chowning the public_html directory (also recursively) to exo:apache, apache:apache, root:root with no success. chmod 777 doesn't do anything either. a tail from the log: [Sat Oct 13 15:10:04 2012] [error] [client 82.***.***.61] (13)Permission denied: access to / denied [Sat Oct 13 15:10:04 2012] [error] [client 82.***.***.61] (13)Permission denied: access to / denied I also found something about selinux and that disabling it might help, but do I really want to do that?

• Permanent fix for unicode characters not displaying correctly (as boxes)

  Please read this entire message before replying. First I know how to fix the issue on a temporary basis. I am looking for a permanent fix. I work with foreign language files a lot. Unfortunately sometimes all the unicode characters in windows explorer, notepad, and other places (as rendered by windows, probably GDI) do not display correctly. That is they display as square blocks, where as they had just been displaying correctly. There are countless methods to temporarily correct the issue. But again, I want a way to permanently resolve the issue. What I have tried: The silly "Hide fonts based on language settings". This setting only applies to what fonts you see in the fonts folder and font dropdowns. It doesn't disable foreign fonts (doesn't work, or if it does, it is temporary). Deleting the font cache file and rebooting (works.. usually, temporary solution). Changing my locale and then back (sometimes works, temporary solution). Rebooting my PC and getting lucky (50-50 chance, temporary solution). Changing my keyboard input/adding foreign keyboard (temporary solution that only seems to work once). Reinstalling windows (temporary solution, sometimes lasts a few months though, I have done this 7 times across 3 computers) What I have not tried: Buying Windows Ultimate and installing the interface packs. This is not a solution. I can't read Japanese/Chinese and I do not want my interface in those languages. What I will not do: Switch to a different brand operating system (unix, linux, mac os x) Switch to an older version of windows (Windows Vista, XP, 2000, etc). So can anyone recommend a permanent fix for the problem?

• Tables in the SQL Server "master" database, will they cause problems?

  Folks, please be kind on me... I'm just an 'accidental' DBA due to our DBA resigned, so I'm totally a newbie in DBA... You see, I have this application, "ESET Remote Administration Server" (ERAS) that stores its logs and analysis on (originally) a local Access database. The decision was to migrate its database to a SQL Server 2008 R2 machine. ESET (the maker of the software) helpfully provided tools to perform such migration; unfortunately, being the DBA neophyte that I am, I didn't realize that I have to first create my own database (on the SQL Server side) and assign that database as the 'default' database for ERAS' ODBC connection. Now, the migration tool had successfully created a whole bunch of tables inside the "master" database. My questions: Should I leave things be as it is, or should I re-migrate the ERAS database to a different database? If you suggest me perform a re-migration, my plan is to (1) create a new instance, (2) create a new database within the new instance, (3) create a new ODBC System DSN on the ERAS server pointing to the new DB in step 2, (4) use ESET's migration tool to migrate from the current DSN to the new DSN. Do you think I missed a step there? Thanks beforehand for any guidance.

• Inbox not updating in Exchange 2010, all users affected

  I'm battling against this darn issue this morning. We have the following setup: Big Hyper-V machine hosting the servers as VM's VM for CAS: WEB.XXX.local VM for Mailbox: EXC.XXX.local Servers are running Server 2008 R2 with Exchange 2010 SP1 Clients are all running Windows 7 Pro x64 with Outlook 2010 x64 The problem we're having is that nobody is able to see any emails received today (16th of October), but they are able to send externally. When I reply back to the email received externally, I don't get an NDR, yet the user cannot see my email. This is what I found and tried thus far: If we create a subfolder in Outlook 2010 and move any email from the inbox into that folder, changes will be immediately reflected in OWA We've been sending test emails to other users internaly and external email addresses and the sent items folder contains all those tests, synced properly to OWA as well Have tried crating a new profile, new emails are still missing Tried disabling Cache Mode, still no luck Also disabled "Download shared folders", still no luck Tried to setup a brand new Exchange mailbox and configured it on a VM that never had Outlook on it, still the same issue Tried restarting Exchange services on both CAS and Mailbox servers, no luck Tried rebooting both CAS and Mailbox servers, still no luck Performed a Mailbox Discovery on my admin account, emails from today are being found in the Discovery results, so the stuff is there, just not updating the user inboxes Any idea about what this hellish thing can be? I've done everything I can think of and also everything I could find out there. Let me know if you need any more details and thanks for reading this!

• NTFS frequent corruption when writing many small files, index $I30 error

  I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on a laptop with a 500G HDD, and had all partitions formatted as NTFS. I do a lot of programming and LaTeX typesetting, both of these involves a large amount of reading/writing/deleting to a lot of small files, such as C++ library headers or LaTeX packages. The problem is that frequently, when there is a large number of writing to files, the partition being written to often corrupts, the chkntfs e: returns dirty, where e: is the partition being written. I've re-formatted the drive, I've contacted the laptop manufacturer and had the HDD checked, the HDD is not faulty, there are no bad sectors, and I've tried a brand new HDD, to no avail, and the other partition on the same physical drive doesn't have this issue. I'm pretty sure that it's no hardware related. I've searched the Microsoft support pages, one page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982018 provides an update for Advanced Format Disks, which I've already installed. The chkntfs log shows $130 index errors. I'm at a loss here. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

  I am not a Linux newbie, but haven't touched SuSE in a very very long time (last time I tried it, it was SuSE 7!). Finally now I felt like giving it a try, and many things seem strange or unnecessarily complex. I have a series of questions. How do I ensure that my packages are uptodate? It sounds silly, but I tried the obvious methods already. I have disabled the default repositories that show up when you do zypper lr, and added Tumbleweed and packman repositories (Essentials, Multimedia, Extra). Then I did a sudo zypper ref --force and then sudo zypper dup, and it tells me many dependencies are not met. I have already added solder.allowVendorChange=true to /etc/zypp/zypp.conf, so it should not care which repository the latest versions are in, and just upgrade to it. Even when I chose to skip the packages with unmet dependencies, and seemed like quite a bit happened in the background, I opened Firefox afterwards and the version was 7! I am guessing things did not go as expected. But of course this is not a problem with SuSE, but I am not understanding the system right. How do I do it right? When I start typing arguments of a command, for example sudo zypper install, when I type sudo zypper ins and keep hitting TAB, nothing happens! It always worked in Ubuntu and I feel very uneasy with this. Is this how SuSE is supposed to be? When I try to install something, and I start writing its name, even though the package exists and I am sure of it, hitting TAB does not autocomplete it. This is also quite inconvenient. Why is it not happening? There are many things in SuSE that are really great, and I think I will stay with it and not go back to Ubuntu once I settle these very rudimentary issues. But right now they are giving me a lot of grief! Please help!

  Hello, I'm struggling to find a way to connect my Asp .Net + C# application with my Oracle 10g Express Edition. Here's my scenario, I'm at Mac OS and I have 2 Virtual machines, one for Win 7 (VS 2010 app) and another with a Parallels Virtual Appliance with Oracle 10g Express Edition 1.1. Which provider (Oledb, ODP.NET, etc..) should I use? How to make the connection to the server in C#? Right now I have this: <appSettings> <add key="conn" value="Data Source=10.211.55.11;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=l3gion;Password=l3gion;" /> </appSettings> And at the .cs file: SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("insert_thing", new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["conn"])); cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; *insert_thing is a stored procedure Using this I got this error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) I've searched for some possible solutions. Tried some, including: firewall disabled, allow remote connection at oracle express edition using this cmd line ("EXEC DBMS_XDB.SETLISTENERLOCALACCESS(FALSE);").. The error persists. Can anyone guide me into the right direction? I'm a newbie with this type of things. Thank you for your patience. regards

• HP EliteBook 8440P - USB ports stop working on docking station

  I have a HP Elitebook 8440P running Windows XP Pro SP3. I installed it on my docking station and everything went smooth for a while. Last week, my mouse and any other USB devices stoped working sudenly... It was working fine on my laptop itself but nothing on my docking station. LCD attached monitor works and same for LAN and PS2 keyboard. I updated the BIOS, Chipset, Video Drivers, also changed my docking station by a brand new one but the problem still comes back. I also noticed something in Device Manager... A Generic USB Root Hub has an error on it, a Yellow/Orange exclamation mark. I tried to update that driver but no luck. Windows is unable to process it. This seems to be the problem but can't fix it. I may only re-image my laptop but for me, I need to avoid that since I have so many apps installed on it. If anybody has any advice, I'll take it!
