• How can I synchronise my Outlook Calendar with Google Calendar (preferably using a free/open source tool)?

  How can I synchronise my desktop Outlook calendar with my Google Calendar (Outlook - Google)? I saw the question Free tool for Synchronizing Google Contacts and Calendar with Outlook, but the solution that was suggested there is no longer available - Google Sync End of Life. There are tools that required a payment, like SyncMyCal, gSyncit and OggSync, but I am looking for a free / open source solution. One can download Google sync, but when trying to use it there's an error: For now, I use OggSync to synchronise, but as a freeware it allows to synchronise manually only, not automatically, so I have to remember to synchronise after every change. I checked Mozilla Sunbird, but I couldn't find any relative posts on how to synchronise Outlook - Google using it. Just to be clear: I'm not looking for software; I am looking for a solution. What can I do if sometimes software is a solution?

• Book Recommendations for Technical/Solutions Architecture [closed]

  I wish to learn more about Technical and Solutions Architecture. Specifically, I'm concerned with designing HA, Fault-Tolerant Scalable web-based solutions (enough buzzwords ;-). Its a topic I'm familiar with on a technical level having worked as a sysadmin, but I don't know all the buzzwords Architects use and have to brush up on my UML and diagram techniques. I would like a book that describes what architecture is as a discipline and explores standard design patterns, and some do's and don'ts. Do you have any recommendations? I apologise if this sounds vague, its because I am still learning what Architecture is as a discipline having come from a sysadmin background. To be 100% clear I'm looking for books or websites that give broad overviews of what System Design patterns exist and how the discipline works. • Xen: How to install bootloader for domU (guest os) ?

  I tried to install with "grub-install" grub for guest os (which is debian) from host (centos). Tried with chroot, tried with deboostrap, tried with netinstaller. Centos is running on two raid hdd's,under LVM. Lvm volumes are created everything is formated and works. Only bootloader problem left. Netinstaller just throws me a window with error that grub can't be installed, debootstrap instructions is not clear for me in here, grub-install doesn't work in chroot, and out of chroot (grub-install /dev/mylvm/partition) Please can somebody write how to install grub for domU (guest) os from centos?

  I'm starting to test EC2 for a couple of new projects. I need to choose an AMI (Amazon Machine Image) and Amazon offered me as first option Fedora Core 8, which is a very old version of one of my favorites distributions. There is a lot of choices, but it's not clear for me which one is the better option. I have my own reasons in order to choice a distro and a version when I need to install a new server but I don't know If I can apply the same for EC2. I know there is a beta for RHEL, how stable is this beta?, How can I choose between all the CentOS AMIs in the list? So this is my question: Do you recommend an AMI to start with EC2? Thanks

• What does VNC reflectors basically do?

  I am confused about what vnc reflector does. From the documentation http://sourceforge.net/projects/vnc-reflector/ I got that it's proxysitting between real VNC server (a host) and a number of VNC clients. My confusion is : 1. Does it make any changes to the coming stream from server 2. Does it make 1 connection with server to connect to many client or the connections are proportionate. Documentation is not clear in this. If anyone can help me?

• Cannot Ping PS3 Using a Wired Connection

  PS3 is using the inbuilt wireless network adapter (I cannot change this) When I try to ping the PS3 from ANY computer which is on a wired ethernet connection, I get Request Timed Out errors. Whenever I ping from a computer with a wireless connection, it works just fine. To be clear: Pinging from Wireless PC to Wireless PS3 works Pinging from Wired PC to Wireless PS3 fails I have tried this on several PC's and Laptops all with the same results. As an attempted solution I have set up static IP's on all related devices. More information: Default Gateway = 192.168.2.1 PS3(wireless) = 192.168.2.100 PC(wired) = 192.168.2.99 Subnet Mask(for both devices, I have made sure) = 255.255.255.0 Thanks

  I have a server (debian) with two network interfaces that I would like to host multiple services and domains on; it is not entirely clear to me how the hosts file should be set up. Example: eth0, bound to WAN interface 1.2.3.4: mail.example.com www.example.com eth0:1, bound to WAN interface 1.2.3.5: www.other-domain.com eth1, bound to LAN 192.168.1.123: some-clever-hostname What should my hosts file look like? (including localhost,localhost.localdomain, etc.) Should I use DNS for some of these entries? Which ones? Thanks!

• Clearing the terminal before displaying MOTD

  When I connect to my SSH server, it prompts me for the user name and password. After I have authenticated, it will display my MOTD, then show user prompt, like this: Using username "root". Authenticating with public key "everssh" this is my motd root@debian:~# I want to edit some file so that the screen is cleared before the MOTD prints (so basically calling the clear command would do). I heard that the MOTD is displayed by using cat /etc/motd in a startup file, however after searching around I can't find where it is called from. Does anyone know how I can find it?

• Controlling TV Channel Through Computer

  I'm passing my TV input through my computer so that I can use the video stream in an application I'm creating which then outputs to my TV. E.g. Sky Digibox/FreeView box - Laptop - TV Where on my laptop I'll be using the stream in a WPF application so I can overlay XAML objects onto it. My question is, what would be the best way for me to send the signal back to the box to say change the channel for example? I don't want to have to use the remote, I want the computer to handle everything. Is there a standard cable these boxes have that could take what would normally be a remote control signal and use that as input instead? Or would I have to go down the route of looking at some sort of Infared LED to send the signal recreating the remote? Apologies if this is not clear enough, let me know and I'll try and be more precise.

• Do I really need to reboot for AD changes to be applied?

  Every time I request a permission change the IT group at my company instructs me to wait 20 minutes and reboot the computer. I cannot believe that in this day and age you still need to reboot the computer to clear whatever cache stores the permissions locally. It feels like something out of the NT 4 days. Do you actually still need to reboot the computer? Is a logout/login sufficient? Is there still a long time(20 minutes) for the changes to propagate through the AD tree?

• Ctrl Alt Left/Right moves mouse - how to find responsible software?

  Hi, I've got a bit of a strange problem. On one of our computers, pressing ctrl + alt + left/right/up/down will move the mouse pointer on the screen, but it's not clear which software makes this happen. It interferes with other software that uses these shortcuts. I've already tried disabling some software, such as WinKey and a Kensington mouse driver, but that didn't make a difference. It's happening on a Windows XP SP3 computer by the way. Does anyone have an idea of how to find the software that traps this shortcut? Suggestions for actual (types of) software that might be doing this are welcome too. Thanks!

• Windows XP Log In: Can't do it. Logon Message popup.

  A friend recommended this site to me. Hope you can help! I can't seem to log into Windows. I boot my computer. The log In screen appears. I put in my user name and password, hit OK, and the following message pops up: "The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain name are correct, then type your password again. Letters in your passwords must be typed using the correct case". NOTE: I have tried Safe Mode and the same message pops up. Just to be clear, I am not able to get into Windows (I'm stressing this b/c I've come across some suggestions that require you to be in Windows, which doesn't help in my case). • Putting two physical hard drives in a single 2.5" bay?

  My crazy brain came up with this ridiculous idea. "Why can't I have a single 2.5" drive device that actually contains two independent hard drives? I want RAID 1 data mirroring and the security of having redundant drives. This is a thing that must exist!" To be clear, I am not asking if I can somehow shoehorn two 2.5" drives into a single bay, replace an optical drive with an additional HDD, or anything like that. What I have in mind is a single 2.5"-form-factor device that houses two independent hard drives, with separate housings (likely) and distinct controllers. Probably all they'd need to share is the power & SATA connections. Probably no such thing exists, but because I know there exist hard drives the physical size of a stack of postage stamps (roughly), I have to ask.

• Managing multiple ssh keys

  I have a lot of ssh keys, they are all passphrase protected and managed by ssh-agent. As a result of this, I am now getting "Too many authentication failures" on some connections. As has been explained on this site before, this is because ssh will try all keys the agent throws at it. The proposed solution is to use IdentitiesOnly in the config, together with an IdentityFile. While this indeed stops offering wrong keys, it seems it completely disables the agent in full, so now I have to type the passphrase on every connection. I could not find clear info about this. Does IdentitiesOnly just disable getting keys from ssh-agent in full? Or should it just block out the keys that aren't mentioned? • Twisted pair cable twists and unwanted signals issue

  I am confused about one point I have read the following paragraph from the networking book. “the twists in the twisted pair cable are used to avoid the unwanted signals. For example one twist, one wire is closer to the noise source and the other is farther; in the next twist the reverse is true. Twisting makes its probable that both wires are equally affected by the unwanted signal. This means that the receiver which calculate the difference between the two receives no unwanted signal.” Now ok I understood the purpose of twists but I am confused about how receiver will calculate the difference when it will receive the signal?. How unwanted signal will be eliminated ? Another thing that I want to make clear is , I am beginner please provide such an answer that can be understood.

• Removing BIOS Post Messages

  I am working on a project where a standard x86 desktop system will boot and run a single program until it is shut down. I would like to remove all the bios post messages so that it looks a little more "finished" and cleaner when it starts up. I was hoping that there might by a standard implementation/terms to know about so I can avoid having to dig through every manual to see if there are options, or get some advice on a standard set of tools I should be using. I was thinking about getting a board that has an image that covers up the post messages until you press a key and trying to customize it to all black, but it's not clear if this is a good direction. I started looking for OEM motherboards but my searches were filled with standard commercial stuff, or seemed to be way to big for my toy project. What is the best way to go about removing all the bios post messages and just having a blank screen or "loading" message until OS loads?

• Visual Studio 2010 locking referenced Assembly

  I have a sandbox app that is built from the simple WPF Application template. This sandbox references an assembly that I am also building which contains the definition of a UserControl (WPF). I am instantiating this user control in the sandbox, to test the control's behaviour. The point of all this is to speed up development. This worked fine, but recently the .Vshost.exe paired with the sandbox process won't shut down. This prevents me from recompiling the Controls library, though ironically I can recompile the sandbox application. I can't kill the vshost process with Task Manager... only restarting VS2010 will clear it out. But every time I run the application from VS, the process just hangs there, blocking my workflow. I'm at a loss. Any ideas what could be causing this? Or does someone have any proposed workaround (mega-kill switch, perhaps?)

  Hello, guys, good morning. 127.0.0.1 is the local IP, isnt it? Is there a IP that I can use in order to refer to the any user in the internet? The thing is: i want to block a specific file to be accessed by the internet using IIS6. but i doesnt show me a clear way to do this. But i can define some security rules, for example: give IP restrictions for some file. So, i can deny for everybody (using that IP i am asking about) and allow for the internal IP. any suggestions?

• Solaris NFS: user permissions

  I am very new to NFS. I would like to make sure I am clear. If the NFS server shares a directory rw,, and all the files in the directory are permissions 700 and user/group for those files is root/root,,, On the client you would have to log in as root to see it. Is this correct? I am aware that a non root user on the client could make a direct connection to override this. (as in don't use the mount, just use an NFS client hack.) It really seems like anyone who has access to the client machine should have access to the files and that the client machine should be ignoring permissions. Only the server should handle permissions. Am I correct in my understanding? Is it normal to have this type of layout? Is there a way to ignore the permissions on the client side?

  I'm learning javascript and I thought it would be fun to build a "simple" calculator. I spent a few hours coding, and implementing the functions, but it only works partially. Can one of you look at my code and try and figure out what's wrong? The Calculator.zip Here's some explanation of the issues: the add(), subtract(), multiply(), and divide() methods work partially, not at all, or don't do as they're supposed to.. sometimes the 0 wont clear when the replaceDisplay() method evaluates the screen. If it helps, I'm also using jquery, so keep that in mind. Thank you!

• I want to reformat my external hard disk but disk utility said it could not be unmounted

  Hi I wanted to reformat my HP 500GB hard disk to MS DOS (FAT) by using Disk Utility but Disk Utility kept saying that the hard disk cannot be unmounted. I tried googling it but nothing seems to answer my question. I'm not trying to reformat the hard disk in my Mac but my external hard disk! I usually format my hard disks to clear the documents I no longer need. And I'll change it to ExFat but currently, whenever I plug in my hard disk on Windows, the whole system just hangs there.   I have a Google Drive spreadsheet where I would like to compute occurrences of date ranges. Then, I would like to count the occurrence of those bins, such as bin_from bin_to freq ----------------------------------------------- 12/5/2012 23:57:04 12/6/2012 0:03:17 2 12/6/2012 11:20:53 12/6/2012 17:17:07 19 ... ... ... Hope it is clear what I mean. Partial hints are very welcome as well since I am pretty new to spreadsheeting.

What do you suggest? (Note that %1 is always supplied with quotes) Also, I'm not very familiar with vbscript, why does it require no quotes next to each other? ... Still not clear why vbscript can't interpret this assignment, but found a fix: %~1 - Expands %1 and removes any surrounding quotation marks ("").
