  Outline: I use the way shown on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=35087 to backup my linux system, but somehow when I restore it, it crashes. Problem Description: When I reboot, there's an information: Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems: -- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline) -- Check rootdisplay = (did the system wait long enough?) -- Check root = (did the system wait for the right device?) -- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls dev) ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/9cf6f563-86d1-47be-bc26-92dd7df35cb3 does not exist. • Good source for interview-style coding problems for entry/intermediate developers?

  I have taught myself to code over the past few years and do not have a computer science degree. As a result, I lack experience from many things, such as the basic homework/test questions many CS graduates take for granted. I recently had a tech screen interview where I fumbled and struggled to finish a (relatively) common question, I believe due to this inexperience. My question to all of you is this: do you know a good source for a bunch of these problems that includes answers, for an entry/intermediate developer who is trying to gain coding problem solving experience? The ones I've been able to find on the internet are for coding teams, so they're a bit too complicated for me. Thanks so much in advance.

• How to design an interface, where things need to be called in a specific sequence?

  The task is to configure a piece of hardware within the device, according to some input specification. This should be achieved as follows: 1) Collect the configuration information. This can happen at different times and places. For example, module A and module B can both request (at different times) some resources from my module. Those 'resources' are actually what the configuration is. 2) After it is clear that no more requests are going to be realized, a startup command, giving a summary of the requested resources, needs to be sent to the hardware. 3) Only after that, can (and must) detailed configuration of said resources be done. 4) Also, only after 2), can (and must) routing of selected resources to the declared callers be done. A common cause for bugs, even for me, who wrote the thing, is mistaking this order. What naming conventions, designs or mechanisms can I employ to make the interface usable by someone who sees the code for the first time?

• Combining two MVC frameworks in a project

  Is it any good to combine two MVC frameworks together in a project? Is it a fairly common approach? I am thinking about using a serverside framework like CodeIgniter/Laravel and client side framework AngularJS in a predominantly CRUD based web project. I am a bit apprehensive about this idea. I think this approach does not get the best out of both frameworks and can kind of get in way of each other making the application needlessly complicated. Are there some good approaches/practices if one wants to combine these frameworks together?

• How can you identify duplicate CSS rules?

  I'm not talking about used/unused here. I have two stylesheets and some rules differ (either in selectors, rules or both) and some are exactly the same. So I'm looking for a way to extract and move those rules, which are the same in both files, into a third stylesheet. In other words: an intersection of two stylesheets. Strangely, I couldn't find a software for this. Would have expected this to be a more common problem. Background, for those who care: I'm converting a desktop website into a mobile one and I've started by duplicating the desktop stylesheet and changing it (throwing stuff out, adding to it).

  Assume we are getting some statistics from a customer which we analyse and we send our comments to the customer. Now, the customer tells us that the statistic they computed between January and March are based on a wrong methodology and sends us corrected series. We want perform analysis with the wrong and with the correct set of data, which are huge and only differ from January to March. Therefore, we need something like synthetic database records implementing the following logic: synthetic[1] = wrong_data synthetic[2] = correct_data between Januar and March, wrong_data otherwise With this, we can easily perform our analyses on synthetic records. Should such synthetic records be implemented in the application logic or on the side of the database? What are common pitfalls of such an implementation?

• SharePoint 2010 slow page response time suddenly !

  Hello, One of my customers faced a problem that suddenly their SharePoint portal was loading extremely slower than usual. After some basic troubleshooting I did not find anything suspicious in the ULS logs, IIS logs or even Event logs. After that, I came to the part that I like most which is capturing a memory dump for the IIS process and analyzing the threads running. I searched for any common mistakes like looping a large list, calling a remote web service but couldn't find any. After a deep analysis of the memory dump (Which was done by an Escalation Engineer for SharePoint), it seems that the farm root certificate was missing and therefore was trying to validate it from the internet every time the user requests to load the page and this was the resolution http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2625048 Cheers,

How do I know s/he really did anything on my site and what have been done? if it's just to optimize URL to make it meaningful then I don't need that, and I am sure giving every page's URL an alias is not enough to make the site popular. • why is the video freezing all the time on youtube yet the audio plays ok throughout?

  this is just a fresh install of ubuntu 12.04 . I tried it a few years ago when it was on 7.04 and had a lot of issues,then my pc broke and ive never tried it again until tonight. Everything seems to be working well except videos on youtube either wont play at all or freeze while the audio keeps going as normal. Is this a common issue thats gonna be fairly easy to fix or is it something to do with my video card?(ati radeon2100). Any help/advice would be much appreciated.If any other info is needed about my pc feel free to ask. thanks

  I recently heard that a big part in successful/quick debugging and easing the process of programming is to use a big screen. I may be purchasing a new computer in the future and this has me wondering: 1)Is the aforementioned statement actually true or is it a bit of a stretch? 2)Have you noticed that this plays a significant enough part to buy a bigger screen if the bigger screen is significantly more expensive? 3)Is it common for developers to work on 13'' laptop screen as their main (and only) workstation (this is what I currently develop on) or is this actually disadvantageous? • Screen with no usable configuration - Ubuntu 12.04

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on my Dell XPS13 L322X (installed onto a flash drive). However, at boot time, the screen just turns off. I was able to access the Terminal through recovery mode though. I have tried several of the most common solutions that I've seen on forums/AskUbuntu, in vain. Please help me figure this out. Thanks!   I installed the Faience theme (sudo apt-get install Faience) and it installed fine. Then I tried installing another package and it said this... Reading package lists... While of course there are some that I am more at ease than other, I do not have a real way to precisely measure my skill in a specific language. • How to install aircrack on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have downloaded the tar.gz package from the site and then I have extracted using tar -zxvf command as mentioned over there. After that I used sudo apt-get install build-essential then I further installed libssl-dev. Then I changed directory to the aircrack folder. But when I type either sudo make or just make I am getting this same error. I don't know what to do. I have installed the file what they have asked in the error as well. Still the same error is shown. Okay I am not permitted to upload images. The error is : common.mak:85: *** Cannot find development files for any supported version of libnl. install either libnl1 or libnl3.. Stop.

• NVIDIA GFORCE 610M drivers

  I'm attempting to install drivers for my GFORCE 610M and none of the solutions seems to work. Generally people recommend using the jockey-gtk program, which doesn't detect the card and states that there's no propitiatory drivers to install. I tried download the official binary from the NVIDIA site, but that told me that I had to remove the Nouveau kernal driver, so I did that, following the instructions on the wiki (apt-get remove --purge xorg-something or other) and ignoring the "DON'T DO THIS" warning, after that didn't do anything i installed various packages (nvidia-common, nvidia-settings, etc) and eventually got the nvidia-settings program (and a very low screen resolution). Unfortunately when I open nvidia-settings it tells me to run nvidia-xconfig as root (i've done this several times, but to no avail) and doesn't let me configure anything. At this point I tried re-running the binary installer i downloaded from nvidia's site, and it said it worked but it didn't change a thing. So I'm out of ideas, what've you got?

• Help with off-game tasks

  I love writing video games for fun, and often do that. I noticed, anyway, that most of the times implementing the gameplay itself doesn't take too much time to me (maybe because I already did that plenty times and know what and how to do for most of the things), but when I try to implement off-game stuff I get lost. By off-game I mean what is not gameplay: menus, cutscenes between levels, world map to choose levels, saving and loading status, managing replays ... Only tried to write a few of these a few times, but always failed; that's why I never really completed and distributed a game. Are these common problems? And where should I start to do this? Where could I find some books/guides about such stuff?

  Is it discouraged/not-common to build Websites (not web-services!) using Jersey or any other JAX-RS implementation ? I didn't find any guide/tutorial/article regarding that.. • Would you use (a dialect of) LISP for a real-world application? Where and why?

  LISP (and dialects such as Scheme, Common LISP and Clojure) haven't gained much industry support even though they are quite decent programming languages. (At the moment though it seems like they are gaining some traction). Now, this is not directly related to the question, which is would you use a LISP dialect for a production program? What kind of program and why? Usages of the kind of being integrated into some other code (e.g. C) are included as well, but note that it is what you mean in your answer. Broad concepts are preferred but specific applications are okey as well.
