• How can I run the same Linux Installation on my hardware and in a virtual machine?

  I've started some development that requires Linux (I'm currently on Ubuntu, but I may switch to Debian), but I still use Windows 7 for my day-to-day computing. I have already tried a dual-boot setup, but I've found that it is too cumbersome to switch between Linux and Windows. I'm wondering if it's possible to setup an installation of Linux (again, Ubuntu or Debian) on a partition of my hard drive that I can also run from Windows in a virtualized environment.

  Mac OS X Spaces change when I drag a window at the edge of the screen. Is there an application or 'defaults' command to disable this? Warp looks like it might help, but hasn't changed the behavior for me, even though I tried turning it off, or setting a modifier key.

  I'm currently using UltraVNC to connect to my Mac Mini from my Windows 7 machine. I'm running into annoyances/issues because I'd like to use activate certan Mac key combinations from my Windows keyboard but can't, and I may even want to remap explicitly what Windows Shift, Alt, Ctrl, and Win do on the Mac when I'm using the VNC client. Does anyone know if it is possible to customize this in UltraVNC, or if there is some other client that can do that?

  I've recently begun using KVM for my development/test environment on a Linux host system with 8G memory. Prior, I was using VMware Fusion for my virtual environment, but my Macbook only has 2G memory. I tried VMware Server and ESX on the host instead of KVM, but the webUI doesn't run on Mac OSX's Firefox, and we're going to be doing more with KVM anyway. The main feature of VMware I miss is robust snapshot/rollback, but I'm missing this in KVM. I understand the snapshot command, but it shuts down the guest OS when complete, and then copying the disk image to preserve its state is cumbersome. Is this really the best way to manage snapshots on KVM?

• How to Shrink large Hyper-V VM

  Using Disk2VHD utility I converted my bare-metal OS into Hyper-V VHD - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ee656415.aspx And I could obtain a huge 190GB VHD file. Apart from performance issues, this VHD worked fine as guest when hosted on Windows Server 200 R2, Hyper-V. Having realized need to keeping only system files and application installations on VHD. I have deleted most of the junk data from this VHD and now it contains only 20-25 GB. But I am not able to shrink the VHD VM. Having done some research, I came to know, this as a limitation of .VHD files. Subsequently I followed these two step using Edit Virtual Hard Wizard on Windows 2012 Box. Convert from VHD to VHDX (took close to 3 hrs.) Compact (Another 4 hrs.) This did not ever shrink the VHDX either. Does Hyper-V does not provide proper support to handle large VHDs or VHDXs whose size are the range of 200GB.

  At my workplace, everyone uses VMware Player (and some people have licenses for Workstation). We frequently share VMs to save time on development setup. However, I would really like to take advantage of the Snapshot feature in VirtualBox since I am unable to acquire a license for Workstation. I have read that VirtualBox has no issues reading VMWare VMs (including VMs with snapshots). However, I'm worried about how compatible things are the other way. In VirtualBox, I open up a VM created in VMware and create multiple snapshots. Can the resulting files be opened in VMware?

• (simple) linux HA with vmware vsphere?

  I hope my upcoming question is specific enough, and you are able and willing to support :-) We have several openSUSE VMs in an ESX-Cluster (three ESX-Servers) with an attached iSCSI-SAN. All of those Linux VMs are "single point of failure"-configured, which means in the case of a Web-Server: LAMP, storage, etc. everything on this machine. This was very simple and in case of a failure (in the last years: kernel panics or apache crashes) a simple reboot triggered by a script did it. But the problem is: How to upgrade/maintain the w(eb-)application or the underlying OS without downtime? This wasn't really managable and i did this in the early morning ;) How can i achieve a "simple" High-Availability Cluster now? I thought of: DRBD with heartbeat with 2 VMs. And for the storage a RDM (raw device mapped) LUN and change the read-write-permissions for both VMs. Is this a good idea? Anyone has a better solution?

• Feedback on Using ZFS and FreeBSD

  I need to create a server that will be used solely for backing up files. The server will have 2TB of storage to begin with but I may want to add additional storage later on. As such, I am currently considering using FreeBSD + ZFS as the OS and file system. Is ZFS a reliable, trusted file system? Should I use it in this scenario? I have read that ZFS should be used with OpenSolaris over FreeBSD as OpenSolaris is usually ahead of the curve with ZFS as far as version updates and stability. However, I am not interested in using OpenSolaris for this project. An alternative option that I am considering is to stick with ext3 and create multiple volumes if need be, because I know that I will not need a single, continuous volume larger than 2TB. • Physical-to-virtual for personal use

  One of my current projects involves reducing the number of old computers lying around. So far, the office systems have been downsized from 5 to 2. One system which had no data on it was dumped entirely, while three other identical boxes were consolidated into to one (I swap hard drives as needed and they just work(tm)). I want to make further cuts. The physical systems in question all run windows xp sp3, and were old Pentium 4s with 256 MB of RAM. Currently, I have got a VirtualBox running on another system. My intention is to migrate all services to that. We can assume that disk space and RAM on the host is not an issue. I'd rather not go with a client-server physical-to-virtual (P2V) method like what VirtualBox uses now. I have a few specific concerns as well - specifically whether I'd need to reactivate or sysprep for dissimilar hardware first. An offline tool for imaging (Windows or Linux) would not be an issue since the drives could be mounted onto another system I have anyway or I could use a LiveCD. What would be my options for P2V conversion, and what would I need to keep in mind when doing this?

• Virtual Server 2005 VSS writer missing

  I have two servers running Virtual server 2005 R2 SP1. I'm using Symantec Backup Exec 10d for backups. One server runs the backups fine but the other will cause the vm's to crash when it tries to backup. I think the problem is because the "Microsoft Vitual Server 2005 Writer" is not showing up when I run "vssadmin list writers". Can I install the writer without reinstalling VS 2005?

• Is there a good command-line OS from which I can launch VMs?

  Generally speaking, I'm interested in something that can load quickly and, depending on what I want to do, can choose to launch a Virtual Machine that is tailored to my desired activity. So, something that loads to (preferably) a command line, then if I want to run my Windows 7 machine that has all of my programming junk on it, I can simply enter the command to launch some VM player and close it when I'm done.

• Terminal Server 2008: Remote App Issue

  I have a FoxPro 2.6 (16-bit) application that I've installed on a Win2008 (32-bit) Terminal Server. I then created a Remote App from it. It works fine. The problem is that within this FoxPro application it calls out to a .Net application. I have the proper .Net Framework installed on the server (2.0) and I have run the code access security policy tool (caspol.exe). • No GLX on Intel card with multiseat with additional nVidia card

  I have multiseat configured and my Xorg has 2 server layouts. One is for nVidia card and other is for Intel card. They both work, but display server assigned to Intel card doesn't have hardware acceleration since DRI and GLX module being used is from nVidia driver. So my question is, can I configure layouts somehow to use right DRI and GLX with each card?   I downloaded this and the instructions say: Important: You must enable the I/O APIC in order to use 64-bit mode. (See http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch03.html.) On newer versions of VirtualBox, it may default to using SATA as the disk interface. This can cause a kernel panic in the VM. Switching to the IDE driver solves this problem. I am running this on Red Hat 64-bit mode (I've also tried on Ubuntu 64-bit with the same result). I pointed to the cloudera-vm image as a startup disk for the VM. I am getting this message: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine ClouderaDevelopment. VT-x features locked or unavailable in MSR. (VERR_VMX_MSR_LOCKED_OR_DISABLED).   Hi, I have tried running windows xp development virtual machine under windows 7 and the performance was dreadful. I'm considering installing Linux and running the virtual machine from the Linux, but I'm not sure whether I can expect any performance gains? It's a 2.4ghz core 2 duo machine with 4gb ram and 5400 rpm hdd. Can somebody please recommend very cut down version of linux that can run VMWare player and isn't resource hungry? Thank you

Then I saw that the interface was renamed to eth1, so I edited /etc/network/interfaces to change eth0 to eth1, rebooted (didn't know how to restart the network), and boot was now faster and internet worked fine. But now after every time I log in, I get 1 or 2 error messages that say nothing, they only ask me if I want to report them. So I was wondering, is there was a proper way to change MAC address, to avoid these issues?

First, I'm on OVH, and you need to know they don't allow networking from different mac addresses.   My boss is looking at getting an aircard ( internet over cell network ) for his laptop. One of the uses he mentioned was gotomypc. I couldn't find good information on it, but I was thinking it would blow out the bandwidth because it was like streaming a movie. Is gotomypc really feasible with an aircard at this point?

  I'm trying to shrink a Windows 7 XP Mode VHD file with VhdResizer with little success. When I select my VHD file, it says "VhdExpand only supports fixed and dynamic VHD files". My XP Mode VHDs are dynamic files. Does anyone have any idea why it is failing? Failing that, does anyone have a process that I can use to shrink my XP mode VHD files on Windows 7 (64 bit)?
