• Color Theory: How to convert Munsell HVC to RGB/HSB/HSL

  I'm looking at at document that describes the standard colors used in dentistry to describe the color of a tooth. They quote hue, value, chroma values, and indicate they are from the 1905 Munsell description of color: The system of colour notation developed by A. H. Munsell in 1905 identifies colour in terms of three attributes: HUE, VALUE (Brightness) and CHROMA (saturation) [15] HUE (H): Munsell defined hue as the quality by which we distinguish one colour from another. He selected five principle colours: red, yellow, green, blue, and purple; and five intermediate colours: yellow-red, green-yellow, blue-green, purple-blue, and red-purple. These were placed around a colour circle at equal points and the colours in between these points are a mixture of the two, in favour of the nearer point/colour (see Fig 1.). VALUE (V): This notation indicates the lightness or darkness of a colour in relation to a neutral grey scale, which extends from absolute black (value symbol 0) to absolute white (value symbol 10). This is essentially how ‘bright’ the colour is. CHROMA (C): This indicates the degree of divergence of a given hue from a neutral grey of the same value. The scale of chroma extends from 0 for a neutral grey to 10, 12, 14 or farther, depending upon the strength (saturation) of the sample to be evaluated. There are various systems for categorising colour, the Vita system is most commonly used in Dentistry. This uses the letters A, B, C and D to notate the hue (colour) of the tooth. The chroma and value are both indicated by a value from 1 to 4. A1 being lighter than A4, but A4 being more saturated than A1. If placed in order of value, i.e. brightness, the order from brightest to darkest would be: A1, B1, B2, A2, A3, D2, C1, B3, D3, D4, A3.5, B4, C2, A4, C3, C4 The exact values of Hue, Value and Chroma for each of the shades is shown below (16) So my question is, can anyone convert Munsell HVC into RGB, HSB or HSL? So i take 7.05 to mean 70.5%. But what is Hue measured in? i'm used to hue being measured in degrees (0..360). But the values i see would all be red - when they should be more yellow, or brown. Finally, it says that Choma/Saturation can range from 0..10 ...or even higher - which makes it sound like an arbitrary scale. So can anyone convert Munsell HVC to HSB or HSL, or better yet, RGB?

• How would you organize a large complex web application (see basic example)?

  How do you usually organize complex web applications that are extremely rich on the client side. I have created a contrived example to indicate the kind of mess it's easy to get into if things are not managed well for big apps. Feel free to modify/extend this example as you wish - http://jsfiddle.net/NHyLC/1/ The example basically mirrors part of the comment posting on SO, and follows the following rules: Must have 15 characters minimum, after multiple spaces are trimmed out to one. If Add Comment is clicked, but the size is less than 15 after removing multiple spaces, then show a popup with the error. Indicate amount of characters remaining and summarize with color coding. Gray indicates a small comment, brown indicates a medium comment, orange a large comment, and red a comment overflow. One comment can only be submitted every 15 seconds. If comment is submitted too soon, show a popup with appropriate error message. A couple of issues I noticed with this example. This should ideally be a widget or some sort of packaged functionality. Things like a comment per 15 seconds, and minimum 15 character comment belong to some application wide policies rather than being embedded inside each widget. Too many hard-coded values. No code organization. Model, Views, Controllers are all bundled together. Not that MVC is the only approach for organizing rich client side web applications, but there is none in this example. How would you go about cleaning this up? Applying a little MVC/MVP along the way?   I've got a recordset that I'm filtering on a particular field (i.e. Manager ="Frannklin"). Now I'd like to group the results of that filtered recordset based on another field (Client). I can't seem to get Muenchian grouping to work right. Any thoughts? TIA! • File sizing issue in DOS/FAT

  I've been tasked with writing a data collection program for a Unitech HT630, which runs a proprietary DOS operating system that can run executables compiled for 16-bit MS DOS with some restrictions. I'm using the Digital Mars C/C++ compiler, which is working well thus far. One of the application requirements is that the data file must be human-readable plain text, meaning the file can be imported into Excel or opened by Notepad. I'm using a variable length record format much like CSV that I've successfully implemented using the C standard library file I/O functions. When saving a record, I have to calculate whether the updated record is larger or smaller than the version of the record currently in the data file. If larger, I first shift all records immediately after the current record forward by the size difference calculated before saving the updated record. EOF is extended automatically by the OS to accommodate the extra data. If smaller, I shift all records backwards by my calculated offset. This is working well, however I have found no way to modify the EOF marker or file size to ignore the data after the end of the last record. Most of the time records will grow in size because the data collection program will be filling some of the empty fields with data when saving a record. Records will only shrink in size when a correction is made on an existing entry, or on a normal record save if the descriptive data in the record is longer than what the program reads in memory. In the situation of a shrinking record, after the last record in the file I'm left with whatever data was sitting there before the shift. I have been writing an EOF delimiter into the file after a "shrinking record save" to signal where the end of my records are and space-filling the remaining data, but then I no longer have a clean file until a "growing record save" extends the size of the file over the space-filled area. The truncate() function in unistd.h does not work (I'm now thinking this is for *nix flavors only?). One proposed solution I've seen involves creating a second file and writing all the data you wish to save into that file, and then deleting the original. Since I only have 4MB worth of disk space to use, this works if the file size is less than 2MB minus the size of my program executable and configuration files, but would fail otherwise. It is very likely that when this goes into production, users would end up with a file exceeding 2MB in size. I've looked at Ralph Brown's Interrupt List and the interrupt reference in IBM PC Assembly Language and Programming and I can't seem to find anything to update the file size or similar. Is reducing a file's size without creating a second file even possible in DOS?

  This one seems to be a simple problem, but I can't make it work in a single select or nested select. Retrieve the authors and (if any) advisers of a paper (article) into one row. I order to explain the problem, here are the two data tables (pseudo) papers (id, title, c_year) persons (id, firstname, lastname) plus a link table w/one extra attribute (pseudo): paper_person_roles( paper_id person_id act_role ENUM ('AUTHOR', 'ADVISER') ) This is basically a list of written papers (table: papers) and a list of staff and/or students (table: persons) An article my have (1,N) authors. An article may have (0,N) advisers. A person can be in 'AUTHOR' or 'ADVISER' role (but not at the same time). The application eventually puts out table rows containing the following entries: TH: || Paper_ID | Author(s) | Title | Adviser(s) | TD: || 21334 |John Doe, Jeff Tucker|Why the moon looks yellow|Brown, Rayleigh| ... My first approach was like: select/extract a full list of articles into the application, eg.SELECT q.id, q.title FROM papers AS q ORDER BY q.c_year and save the results of the query into an array (in the application). • How to stop DW20.exe running on Win 2003 Server (usual solutions already tried)

  Periodically my ASP.NET application crashes (usually because memory consumption exceeds maximum allowed by application pool) and DW20.exe starts up. This is a big problem because it uses huge amounts of memory and CPU for minutes at a time. I want to know how to stop DW20.exe from running. Please note, I have already tried these often mentioned solutions: Disabling error reporting in Control Panel System Advanced Error Reporting Disabling the Error Reporting Service Modifying the registry as in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841477 (however I might have done this wrong - this doc says "add a DWReportee value of 1" - what I did was add a DWORD entry with hexadecimal value of 1 - is this right? Also only 2 of the 4 keys were present, so I only modified these, e.g. there was no HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\PCHealth key at all) So, zero points for suggesting any of the above (unless you can see I have modified the registry incorrectly) ! Also zero points for suggesting I resolve whatever is causing the application crashes :) - I am figuring this out, I just want something in the mean time to stop DW20.exe eating up all the server resources. By the way, this is a Windows 2003 SP1 server, with IIS 6 and SQL 2005 installed. There is no MS Office. Thx

• How-To Configure Weblogic, Agile PLM and an F5 LTM

  Agile, Weblogic, and an F5 walk into a bar ... I've got this Agile PLM v 9.3 Running on WebLogic, two managed servers. An F5 BigIP LTM. We're upgrading from Agile v 9.2.1.4 running on OAS. The problem is that while the Windows client works fine the Java client does not. My setup is identical to one outlined in F5's doc: http://www.f5.com/pdf/deployment-guides/bea-bigip45-dg.pdf When I launch the java client it returns this error "Server is not valid or is unavailable." Oracle claims Agile PLM is setup correctly, but won't comment on the specifics of the load balancer. F5 reports the configuration is correct but can't comment on the specifics of the application. I am merely the guy in a vortex of finger-pointing who wants my application to work. It's that or give up on WLS and move back to OAS. Which has it's own problems but at least we know how it works. Any ideas?

  So I'm trying to setup PostFix while using SASL (Cyrus variety preferred, I was using dovecot earlier but I'm switching from dovecot to courier so I want to use cyrus instead of dovecot) but I seem to be having issues. • apache renew ssl not working [on hold]

  Downloaded a new ssl cert from go daddy and installed the cert on apache2 server put the cert in /etc/ssl/certs/ folder put the gd_bundle.crt in the /etc/ssl/ folder private key is in /etc/ssl/private/private.key I just replaced the original files with the new files, did not replace the private key. I restarted the server but the website is still showing old certificated date. • Reverse Proxies and AJAX

  A client of ours is using IBM/Tivoli WebSEAL, a reverse-proxy server for some of their internal users. Our web application (ASP.NET 2.0) and is a fairly straightforward web/database application. Currently, our client users that are going through the WebSEAL proxy are having problems with a .NET 3rd party control. Users who are not going through the proxy have no issues. The 3rd party control is nothing more than an AJAX dynamic tree that on each click requests all the nodes for each leaf. Now our clients claim that once users click on a node in the control, the control itself freezes in such a way that they don't see anything populate. Users see "Loading..." message appear but no new activity there afterwards. They have to leave the page and go back to the original page in order to view the new nodes. I've never worked with a reverse proxy before so I have googled quite a bit on the subject even found an article on SF. IBM/Tivoli has mentioned this issue before but this is about all they mention at all. While the IBM doc is very helpful, all of our AJAX is from the 3rd party control. I've tried troubleshooting using Firebug but by not being behind the reverse proxy, I'm unable to truly replicate the problem. My question is: does anyone have experience with reverse proxies and issues with AJAX sites? How can I go about proving what the exact issue is? Currently we're negotiating remote access so assume for the greater part that I will have access to a machine that's using the WebSEAL proxy. P.S. I realize this question might teeter on the StackOverFlow/ServerFault jurisdictional debate, but I'm trying to investigate from the systems perspective. I have no experience with reverse proxies (and I'm unclear on the benefits) and little with forwarding proxies.

• Setting up SQL Server 2005 to use all available memory in 32bit Windows Server 2003 - and verifying

  There are a number of questions along this line - but they either sometimes contradict each other, or don't show how to properly verify that everything is actually working - hopefully this can be comprehensive... I'm running SQL Server 2005 SP3 Standard on Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard. My server has 8GB of memory installed - my system is almost entirely used as a Database Server - there are some services running on them, but the OS + services can run within 1Gb of RAM. What I've done (please tell me if I'm doing something wrong): /3GB in the boot.ini. (To increase the amount of user-space memory available - info) /PAE in the boot.ini. (Windows claimed to be doing PAE even without this switch, somethow.) Enabled AWE in SQL Server. Enabled Lock Pages in Memory Option for users SYSTEM and Local Service. (info). SQL Server Standard doesn't seem to use this until Cumulative Update 4, which isn't installed on my server. (info) Set Min/Max Memory to : 1024Mb/5112Mb After doing all the above, we definately saw a level of improvement - but I'd like now to verify my settings, make sure that I'm making full use of the memory available. (There appeared to be a slowdown when max = 7Gb, so I edged off from that value, but it might have been just perceptual.) To verify, I checked the following levels in PerfMon : Process(sqlserv):Working Set : 76386304 SQL Server(Memory Manager) : Total Server Memory : 3538944 (I saw a doc that noted that this wasn't the full memory used by SQL Server, so I'm not sure whether to trust it) So -- my questions... Should my max be around 7Gb? If not, what should it be? Why is total server memory at 3.5G, when it's been allocated 5G? What is the proper metric for the amount of memory allocated to SQL Server? The Working Set seems a bit large... Am I possibly missing any steps in the setup? Any recommended resources on starting to tune the caching system now? Thanks
