    New Ubuntu User Needs Help!- version 9.10 does not communicate with laptop Hello folks, Several days ago, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my Acer Aspire 3100 laptop, running it alongside Widows Vista as a dual-bootable system. Creation of the Ubuntu boot CD went fine, and the installation onto my hard drive was flawless. Ubuntu opens and behaves as I would expect, except for one little problem. For reasons unknown to me, Ubuntu is not communicating with my laptop's networking hardware, and I have no internet connectivity, even when sitting directly under the wireless router at the local library (literally), which puts out a wickedly-fast signal that my Windows Vista OS auto-detects and immediately connects to. Up in the right side of the Ubuntu desktop, I click on the network icon and it does not show a wireless connection at all, even though I am only a few feet from the router. At home, where I use a dialup modem, I also see no means of getting online. My modem is an HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with Smart CP,manufactured by CXT (Conexant Systems Inc., file version 4.0.13.0, and the driver version is 7.58.0.0). I desparately wish to convert to Ubuntu. I used Mac for ten years, and then Windows for ten years. Now, after 20 years, I want to live out my days as an open-source Ubuntu fanatic. I am ready to give the old status quo the boot! I am an advanced computer user, but I am not a programmer. I seek a solution that is user-friendly for normal people, something equivalent to a driver that I can easily install or activate that will allow Ubuntu to see my hardware and get me connected. Can anyone help me over this hopefully-little glitch so that I can move on in total Ubuntu bliss? My processor is a Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3500+ at 1.80 GHz, 1.50 GB RAM, and a 32-bit Operating System. I am running Windows Vista Home Basic, Service Pack 2. My current email is [email protected] if you have a workable solution that does not require programmer status to implement. Surely this must be a simple fix that I simply am overlooking, but being the new guy on the block, I have yet to be enlightened. Thanks for your help in coming up to speed!!     I'm trying to config archlinux to use my wireless network adapter. It's quite troublesome. From what I've gathered, it's an atheros network adapter, using the ath5k driver/module... I can't get it to work; any ideas?   • Canon LIDE 30 scanner with Windows 7 x64

    Has anyone gotten any of those older LIDE scanners (models 20, 30, 35 etc.) to work on Win7 x64?? I've tried several things, like grabbing the LIDE 60 driver for Vista64, but nothing has worked so far.... Any ideas? Doesn't look like Canon wants to support its "more-than-six-months-old" own hardware.... disappointing, really.

    The HP DL380 G7 has 3 SAS disks in RAID 5 configuration. I need to change that server to another task and instead of make a clean install on the HP DL380 G6 can i just swap the 3 disks from HP DL380 G7 to the HP DL380 G6? I expect some driver issues maybe on the OS itself because the processor is different. They both use Smart Array P410i, if i power down the machines swap the disk by the same order will the RAID 5 configuration remain and the OS will boot?

  • Suggestions for sharing and using data between Ubuntu and Windows 7 dual boot

    Note: TL;DR, scroll to bottom for summary. I recently set up my computer for a dual boot between Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7. My current drive setup is as follows. | A1 | A2 | | B1 | B2 | B3 | A1: 100 mb, windows 7 "System Reserved" boot partition A2: 230 gb, data section, this one needs to be shared between the operating systems B1: 125 gb, windows 7 OS B2: 123 gb, ubuntu OS B3: 2gb, linux swap space Pretty much i want to have my documents, music, pictures, videos, etc accessible from both operating systems. My first attempt involved making the data (a2) partition NTFS, and moving my home folder from ubuntu to the data partition. However, as I read NTFS does not work nice with permission, and it messed up my home folder. My next idea is one of the following: 1) format the data partition to ext2/3/4 and move my home folder from linux there, and get a driver to read ext partitions in windows 7. The problem with that is that most of the ext drivers/software are not compatible with windows 7 or do not integrate with windows explorer (I really don't want to open a separate software window just to access my data, plus it's probably not compatible with other software.) http://www.fs-driver.org/ looks promising, but I'm not sure how it works with ext4 and windows 7 (not officially supported, when trying in vista compatibility mode, it tells me I need to format the ext drive to use it). My next idea, 2) keep the home folder in ubuntu where it is, but create symlinks for the Documents, Music, etc folders to an NTFS formatted Data (A2) partition, and add those locations to the windows 7 libraries. I'm not totally sure how the permissions would work out, but it should be fine since it's only the documents, music, etc and not the important config files in the rest of /home/user/. Correct me if I'm wrong. Currently, symlinks is my best idea, although i'm not sure how it will work. Any suggestions, additions to my ideas, links, pointers, whatever would be greatly appreciated. Even if it means i should reformat both my drives and repartition (2 250gb drives if you want to suggest a setup for that), I won't be too opposed if that's the best suggestion (I've gone through the format/install/format/reinstall process 5 times over the past 3 days, once more won't hurt me). TL;DR, summary: I have two hard drives. One is partitioned for Ubuntu and Windows 7, the second one I want accessible to both operating systems to store documents, music, pictures, videos, etc. Suggestions on how to set up the data drive please =) P.S. bonus if I can get an apache server document root folder working between the two OS's as well (permissions could become very complicated, so don't worry too much about that) P.P.S.     I am a webdeveloper and my current working tools are: Terminal (ssh, tailing logs, grep, git, etc) Eclipse (PDT, Javascript, etc) Firefox (Developer Toolbar + Firebug) The problem is that I hate using the eclipse navigation tree. For me it is a lot easier to go to the Terminal and do something like this: $ eclipse /var/www/myproject/long/path/lib/Driver/Sql.php The annoying part is that the eclipse window is not focused after this command. I have to manually click on the eclipse window (using mouse... :@ grrr) Anyway to force eclipse to be focused?

    So, I just got a new ENUTV-2 USB TV Tuner Box, and it works fine overall. The driver seems to be OK, but the utility provided by encore doesn't seem to be working 100% in win 7. The only real issue is that I can't mute it, or change the volume level. So I'd like to know: Is there good (free) software out there for watching TV? Thanks

  • Kill overscan for ATI drivers?

    I have a dual-boot Windows 7 64 bit/Linux 64 bit machine that uses ATI's Catalyst drivers. Sometimes I attach it to a 1080p LCD TV over HDMI. ATI is daft enough to provide a border to account for overscan. I'm using an LCD TV. No overscan, or it looks like crap because the pixel mapping is not 1:1. How do I disable this driver "feature" in Windows? in Linux?

  • Software for decreasing of touchpad sensitivity (when finger is hovering over touchpad it detect it) (alps touchpad)

    I have an issue with touchpad, when I use it and I have one finger on the touchpad plate and another finger very close to the plate (but i do not touch it with the other finger), my mouse pointer is jumping around the screen. It seems to be an issue with touchpad which detects finger even if it is not touching the plate. I have dell e6530 with Apls touchpad driver and windows7, is there some software which can somehow help to mitigate this effect it is really annoying, on my previous laptop (7 years old) i did not have such issue.
