• Can't connect to certain HTTPS sites

  I've just moved to a new apartment and with internet connection via a router and I'm finding that I can't connect to quite a few sites that use SSL. • Allow sudo on specific file from active directory group

  I have an Ubuntu Server 12.04 box that has active directory integration running on it. I want to allow a certain active directory group access to execute a script as sudo. I want to do something like this: %programmers ALL=NOPASSWD: /usr/local/bin/createSambaShare.php When I log in with my active directory user and issue groups I do not see the group programmers, but I am a part of the programmers group within active directory. I've set up the group under the Unix attributes tab and given it an id of 1000 and added my user to it. My first thought was that I needed to add the group to the Ubuntu box. When I tried to do that, it told me that the programmers group already existed. What am I missing here?

• Rolling Along: PASS Board Year 2, Q2

  Eighteen months into my time as a PASS Director I’m especially proud of what the Virtual Chapters have accomplished and want to share that progress with you. I'm also pleased that the organization has invested more resources to support the VCs. In this quarter I got to attend two conferences and meet more members of the SQL community. Virtual Chapters In the first six months of 2013 VCs have hosted more than 50 webinars, offering free technical education to over 6200 attendees. This is a great benefit to PASS members; thanks to the VC leaders, volunteers and speakers who contribute their time to produce these events. The Performance VC held their “Summer Performance Palooza”, an event featuring eight back-to-back sessions. Links to the session recordings can be found on the VCs web site. The new webinar platform, GoToWebinar, has been rolled out to all the VCs. This is a more stable, scalable platform and represents an important investment into the future of the VCs. A few new VCs are in the planning stages, including one focused on Security and one for Russian speakers. Visit the Virtual Chapter home page to sign up for the chapters that interest you. Each Virtual Chapter is offering a discount code for PASS Summit 2013. After Chicago the Board had several serious discussions about the lessons learned from this seven and what we should do next. We agreed to apply those lessons and continue to invest in this event; there will be a PASS Business Analytics Conference in 2014. I’m very pleased the next event will be in San Jose, CA, the heart of Silicon Valley, a place where a great deal of investment and innovation in data analytics is taking place. Global SQL Community Over the last couple of years PASS has been taking steps to become more relevant to SQL communities in different parts of the world. In May I had the opportunity to attend SQL Bits XI in Nottingham, England. It was enlightening to meet and talk with SQL professionals from around the U.K. as well as many other European countries. The many SQL Bits volunteers put on a great event and were gracious hosts. Budgets The Board passed the FY14 budget at the end of June. The  budget process can be challenging and requires the Board to make some difficult choices about where to allocate resources. Overall I’m satisfied with the decisions we made and think we are investing in the right activities and programs. Next Up The Board is meeting July 18-19 in Kansas City. We will be holding the Executive Committee election for the Exec Co that will take office in 2014. We will also be discussing plans for the next BA conference as well as the next steps for our Global Growth initiative. Applications for the upcoming Board of Directors election open on July 24. If you are considering running for the Board you can visit the PASS elections site to learn more about the election process. And I encourage anyone considering running to reach out to current and past Board members to learn about what the role entails. Plans for the next PASS Summit are in full swing. • Drupal + LDAP + Automatic

  I've got Drupal 6 setup within a XAMPP test area. I have LDAP authentication, groups and data working against Active Directory. What I want... is since I'm on an intranet where users are logged in via user-names... is for automatic authentication, without the need to login via the website. If it's more difficult than its worth, it's no major hassle, but I'd like to know if it's possible that when my users visit our intranet they auto-magically authenticate with their already logged in Windows session. Ultimately, I may switch to IIS, but I do like having a portable, easy to backup/copy/test setup so for now I'm going to see if I can get this working in XAMPP.

• Friday Tips #6, Part 1

  We have a two parter this week, with this post focusing on desktop virtualization and the next one on server virtualization. Question: Why would I use the Oracle Secure Global Desktop Secure Gateway? Answer by Rick Butland, Principal Sales Consultant, Oracle Desktop Virtualization: Well, for the benefit of those who might not be familiar with client connections in Oracle Secure Global Desktop (SGD), let me back up and briefly explain. An SGD client connects to an SGD server using two distinct protocols, which, by default, require two distinct TCP ports. The first is the HTTP protocol, used by the web browser to connect to the SGD webserver on TCP port 80, or if secure connections are enabled (SSL/TLS), then TCP port 443, commonly identified as the "HTTPS" port, that is, "SSL encrypted HTTP." The second protocol from the client to the server is the Adaptive Internet Protocol, or AIP, which is used for displaying applications, transferring drive mapping data, print jobs, and so on. By default, AIP uses the TCP port 3104, or port 5307 when SSL is enabled. When SGD clients need to access SGD over a firewall, the ports that AIP requires are typically "closed"; and most administrators are reluctant, to put it mildly, to change their firewall configurations to allow AIP traffic on 3144/5307.   To avoid this problem, SGD introduced "Firewall Forwarding", a technique where, in effect, both http and AIP traffic are "multiplexed" onto a single "well-known" TCP port, that is port 443, the https port.  This is also known as single-port firewall traversal.  This technique takes advantage of the fact that, as a "well-known service", port 443 is usually "open",   allowing (encrypted) traffic to pass. At the target SGD server, the two protocols are de-multiplexed and routed appropriately. The Secure Gateway was developed in response to requirements from customers for SGD to support multi-stage DMZ's, and to avoid exposing SGD servers and the information they contain directly to connections from the Internet. The Secure Gateway acts as a reverse-proxy in the first-tier of the DMZ, accepting, authenticating, and terminating incoming client connections, and then re-encrypting the connections, and proxying them, routing them on to SGD servers, deeper in the network. The client no longer needs to know the name/IP address of the SGD servers in their network, they connect to the gateway, only. The gateway takes care of those internal network details.     The Secure Gateway supports the same "single-port firewall" capability as does "Firewall Forwarding", but offers the additional advantage of load-balancing incoming client connections amongst SGD array members, which could be cumbersome without a forward-deployed secure gateway. Load-balancing weights and policies can be monitored and tuned using the "Balancer Manager" application, and Apache mod_proxy_balancer directives.   Going forward, our architects recommend the use of the Secure Gateway over "Firewall Forwarding" for single-port firewall traversal, due to its architectural advantages, its greater flexibility and enhanced features.  Finally, it should be noted that the Secure Gateway is not separately priced; any licensed SGD customer may use the Secure Gateway component at no additional cost.   For more information, see the "Secure Gateway Administrator's Guide".

But for me need some documentation what architecture have to be in here. System requiments is simple: User have autentification username and password Then he can see which product groups assigned to it Then he can see all product with information (price, title, description, images, specifications etc.). • How to build a team of people not working together?

  I am in charge of a group of about 30 software development experts and architects. While these people are co-located in the companies organization chart, they do not really feel as a team. This is due to their work enviroment: 1) The people are spread over eight locations, with a max. distance of about 1000km (this is Europe). 2) The people don't work as team but instead get called as single people (and sometimes small groups into projects for as long as the projects run. 3) Travelling is somewhat limited as this requires business reasons. Lot is done via phone. Do you have ideas or suggestions on how I could make these people feeling part of a joint organization where they support others and get supported by others. So that they get to know their peers, build a network, informally exchange information? So that they generally get the feeling of having common ground and derive motivation and job satisfaction?

• building kernel headers (v3.4) breaks wifi (in Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS)

  I have dual-booted by Samsung Series 5 Chromebook into Ubuntu using Jay Lee's script/instructions, and then installed the ~500 updates that appear thereafter. Now, I am trying to build my kernel headers in an attempt to enable virtualization so that I can run VirtualBox (I have a VM image on a flashdrive). I followed the instructions here: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/chromebook-central/PPQFpC7mYzk mainly doing as olofj suggests in his answer, while also making sure to abide by additions/edits made by panZ and algp. However, now that I have done so, my wifi has stopped working, and when I click on the network icon in the top bar, in place of wifi networks there is a grayed-out message that says "no network devices available". I have an Atheros AR9300 Ethernet card (I think thats what you call it). Any help is much needed and appreciated. Any further details necessary to answer the question will be provided as necessary. • Single page not appearing in Google Search

  Description I have a static franchise website which has various sub pages each dedicated to an individual franchisee. For each franchisee the page, the only thing slightly similar between all of them are the page titles, they follow this structure: <title> Welcome to THE_COMPANY - PRODUCT_DESCRIPTION Services, THE_LOCATION </title> THE_COMPANY and PRODUCT_DESCRIPTION are the same across all franchisees, however THE_LOCATION changes depeding on where they are located in the UK. Each franchisee page has the following <meta /> tags: <meta name="DC.creator" content="user"/> <meta name="DC.format" content="text/html"/> <meta name="DC.language" content="en"/> <meta name="DC.date.modified" content="2014-01-23T11:22:31+00:00"/> <meta name="DC.date.created" content="2014-01-23T11:22:09+00:00"/> <meta name="DC.type" content="Page"/> <meta name="DC.distribution" content="Global"/> <meta name="robots" content="ALL"/> <meta name="distribution" content="Global"/> The main content on each franchisee page is completely different. The Problem There is one particular franchisee page, located in Area A.. Which will not appear in Google Search results at all. However every single other franchisee (if you Google Search for "THE_COMPANY, THE_LOCATION" is number 1). And if I do the same search on Bing, Yahoo or DuckDuckGo, the Area A franchisee is the first result on all of them. Has Google for some reason black listed one page on the site? What I Have Tried Ensuring the page is referenced in my sitemap.xml file 'Fetching as Google Bot' the link www.the_company.co.uk/areaa When that came back as OK I would submit to index Resubmitting the sitemap.xml file in Webmaster Tools Linking to the Area A page from another pages content For this I also waited about 3 weeks before checking again to give Google time to re-index Making a change to the page content and waiting another 2 / 3 weeks Removing the page completely and recreating it with an alternative URL The closest thing I have found to this issue is this StackOverflow question but this particular franchisee has existed for almost a year, it used to appear on Google searches however no longer does. I'm guessing the Panda update wasn't too happy with something on the page, but it hasn't effected anything else on the site and I am at a loss for things to try. I would greatly appreciate any information or thoughts as to what could have caused this Thanks. Update It appears Google likes to drop pages every now and then from the index, despite my steps above, I left the site alone and the page appeared back in the SERPs by itself.

I have just started learning UML and that is why I would like to ask for a few cues from experienced users how I could improve my diagram because I do know it lacks a lot of details, it has mistakes for sure etc. Renovation company hires workers. Each employee has some kind of profession, which is required to work on a particular position. Workers work in groups consisting of at most 15 members - so called production units, which specializes in a specified kind of work. Each production unit is managed by a foreman. Every worker in order to be able to perform job tasks needs proper accessories. There are two kind of tools - light and heavy. To use heavy tools, a worker must have proper privileges. A worker can have at most 3 light tools taken from the warehouse.

• 12.04 scanner works fine as super-user but is not recognised as a normal user

  I have an all-in-one printer Epson SX130, wich I have just tried to install. I got the printer working with no problem, but I couldn't set the scanner up. I have had another all-in-one printer before (Brother DCP-125C), and had just the same problem, so I decided to try the same trick I used to do then, running the scanning program as super-user: $sudo simple-scan and $ sudo xsane Once again, it worked just fine, and I could use the scanner. Anyhow, this solution is a little annoying, because I also have to change the permissions to the files I get scanning like this. I have been searching the internet for solutions and got to know this must have something to do with user groups permissions, but couldn't find a satisfying solution. Is there anyone with an idea? Thank you in advance.

• Explicit resource loading in Ogre (Mogre)

  I am just starting to learn Mogre and what I would like to do is to be able to load resources 'explicitly' (i.e. I just provide an absolute path instead of using a resource group tied to a directory). This is very different to manually loading resources, which I believe in Ogre has a very specific meaning, to build up the object using Ogres methods. I want to use Ogres resource management system/resource loading code, but to have finer control over which files are loaded and in what groups they are. I remember reading how to do this but cannot find the page again; I think its possible to do something like: Declare a resource group Declare the resource(s) (this is when the actual resource file name is provided) Initialise the resource group to actually load the resource(s) Is this the correct procedure? If so, is there any example code showing how to do this?

  SharePoint 2010 Training: more information Microsoft launched SharePoint 2013 with great fanfare. But what stuck out was the introductory blog post by Corporate SVP of SharePoint, Jeff Teper. You can read the blogpost titled “The New SharePoint”. But one paragraph has stuck out, “Use SharePoint as an out-of-box application whenever possible - We designed the new SharePoint UI to be clean, simple and fast and work great out-of-box. We encourage you not to modify it which could add complexity, performance and upgradeability and to focus your energy on working with users and groups to understand how to use SharePoint to improve productivity and collaboration and identifying and promoting best practices in your organization.” The keywords here is “whenever possible”. The reality is, frequently it is not possible to not customize SharePoint in order to meet the customer requirements. But you must try and minimize SharePoint customization. • What's up with all the updates? [closed]

  I use Ubuntu exclusively for my job, especially for the fact that everything works and I get the most out of my processor and memory, but you are killing me with updates! I just lost a very good opportunity from a client that installed Ubuntu but got tired of all the updates. I really can't argue the fact. In a matter of a day I had two software updates. Quote from customer: "It's sad that I come in at 6:00 in the morning to install updates from a LTS version, and then before I leave at the end of the day I have 19 new updates to install. At least Microsoft bundles them in controllable groups." Sadly I have to agree, guys you have to do something about this. Please!

• Google Webmasters tools crawl error caused by URL split into two lines

  I am looking in to Google Webmaster Tools - Crawl Error section. How should I handle for those URL due their system / application showed invalid URL. e.g http://www.example/images/products/s_=enlarge_16gb.jpg but, I dunno what happen to yahoo groups, it break the link into http://www.example/images/products/s_= enlarge_16gb.jpg and I only make the top part become hyperlink, which is http://www.example/images/products/s_= Because of the URL, Google show crawl error, I got few error because of this kind of result or because other people typo error. How do I prevent this. I am sure I don't have the right go and change other people post. What is the solution for this. Thanks!

• What has Ubuntu contributed to the Linux Kernel?

  This question is similar to this one: What unique enhancements and features has Ubuntu brought to the Linux Community but in this case it is directed towards what has Ubuntu contributed to the official Linux Kernel. For example, many times I hear about Intel contributing to patches for the Linux Kernel like the RC6 latest patches and any other related to the recent Sandy/Ivy Bridges. In another group, Android did an upstream patch and a lot of ARM patches have also come to the Linux Kernel. I have seeing only a small percent of companies and groups that have contributed to the Linux Kernel (http://kernel.org) but I want to know, since the beginning of Ubuntu till now, what has Ubuntu contributed to the Linux Kernel in regards to any aspect of the kernel. For Kernel information I typically go to http://kernelnewbies.org and http://kernel.org
