• Please help optimizing a long running query (left outer join, with 2 subqueries)

  Hi all. The query I need help with is: SELECT d.bn, d.4700, d.4500, ... , p.`Activity Description` FROM ( SELECT temp.bn, temp.4700, temp.4500, .... FROM `tdata` temp GROUP BY temp.bn HAVING (COUNT(temp.bn) = 1) ) d LEFT OUTER JOIN ( SELECT temp2.bn, max(temp2.FPE) AS max_fpe, temp2.`Activity Description` FROM `pdata` temp2 GROUP BY temp2.bn ) p ON p.bn = d.bn; The ... represents other fields that aren't really important to solving this problem. The issue is on the the second subquery - it is not using the index I have created and I am not sure why, it seems to be because of the way TEXT fields are handled. The first subquery uses the index I have created and runs quite snappy, however an explain on the second shows a 'Using temporary; Using filesort'. Please see the indexes I have created in the below table create statements. Can anyone help me optimize this? By way of quick explanation the first subquery is meant to only select records that have unique bn's, the second, while it looks a bit wacky (with the max function there which is not being used in the result set) is making sure that only one record from the right part of the join is included in the result set.   Hello, What should I do to avoid that commands be executed each time I hit 'Execute !. icon' I mean this USE master; GO CREATE DATABASE Sales GO USE Sales; GO CREATE TABLE Customers( CustomerID int NOT NULL, LName varchar (50) NOT NULL, FName varchar (50) NULL, Status varchar (10), ModifiedBy varchar (30) NULL ) GO When I click Execute!, Sql Server tries to redo the same thing. What I do for now is to delete the Query Window completely then write what I need before clicking the Execute icon. But, I doubt that I should be doing that. What can I do to keep writing the commands without having each time to clear the Query Window? Thanks for helping

  I am making a simple matchmaker as a learning project in JAVA. My program so far just asks a few questions, but I wanted to do gender specific questions, so I asked for their sex (m or f) and then attempted to add a message that only showed if sex was m. The dialog should say "well done, you are male!". Else it restarts method. Every time, no matter what I type it restarts the program. • Rails Active Record Mysql find query HAVING clause

  Is there a way to use the HAVING clause in some other way without using group by. I am using rails and following is a sample sccenario of the problem that i am facing. In rails you can use the Model.find(:all,:select,conditions,:group) function to get data. In this query i can specify a having clause in the :group param. But what if i dont have a group by clause but want to have a having clause in the result set. Ex: Lets take a query select sum(x) as a,b,c from y where "some_conditions" group by b,c; This query has a sum() aggregation on one of the fields. No if there is nothing to aggregate then my result should be an empty set. But mysql return a NULL row. So this problem can be solved by using select sum(x) as a,b from y where "some_conditions" group by b having a NOT NULL; but what happens in case i dont have a group by clause?? a query like below select sum(x) as a,b from y where "some_conditions"; so how to specify that sum(x) should not be NULL? Any solution that would return an empty set in this case instead of a NULL row will help and also that solution should be doable in rails. We can use subqueries to get this condition working with sumthin like this select * from ((select sum(x) as b FROM y where "some_condition") as subq) where subq.b is not null; but is there a better way to do this thru sql/rails ??

• Detecting if Excel file has been closed

  Hi StackOverflow, I've spent the past 3 hours trawling the web for answers to no avail, so I hope you can help me. I'm writing an application which automates Excel. The application has an option to "show/hide the excel sheet" so you can look at it, make any final changes and so forth. Closing the application will naturally close the instance of Excel, however, there is a small chance that someone may exit out of Excel directly, without thinking. This breaks my application and I can't seem to find anyway of "checking if the same workbook is still open, and if not, re-opening it", before saving it I've tried all sorts of things: checking if the Excel Application is null (when it's !=null it will save correctly, but when it "is" null (or at least, something other than !=null it won't even hit the breakpoint so I'm completely lost :( Help please?

Now i want these two entities to be null sometimes. Now my guess for why this is throwing an error is because that both of these entites that are inside order are null. If this is the case, How can I insert an new order into the database with both entities (Address and creditCard) being null.

• MVC SiteMap - when different nodes point to same action SiteMap.CurrentNode does not map to the correct route

  Setup: I am using ASP.NET MVC 4, with mvcSiteMapProvider to manage my menus. I have a custom menu builder that evaluates whether a node is on the current branch (ie, if the SiteMap.CurrentNode is either the CurrentNode or the CurrentNode is nested under it). The code is included below, but essentially checks the url of each node and compares it with the url of the currentnode, up through the currentnodes "family tree". The CurrentBranch is used by my custom menu builder to add a class that highlights menu items on the CurrentBranch. The Problem: My custom menu works fine, but I have found that the mvcSiteMapProvider does not seem to evaluate the url of the CurrentNode in a consistent manner: When two nodes point to the same action and are distinguished only by a parameter of the action, SiteMap.CurrentNode does not seem to use the correct route (it ignores the distinguishing parameter and defaults to the first route that that maps to the action defined in the node). Example of the Problem: In an app I have Members. A Member has a MemberStatus field that can be "Unprocessed", "Active" or "Inactive". To change the MemberStatus, I have a ProcessMemberController in an Area called Admin. The processing is done using the Process action on the ProcessMemberController. My mvcSiteMap has two nodes that BOTH map to the Process action. The only difference between them is the alternate parameter (such are my client's domain semantics), that in one case has a value of "Processed" and in the other "Unprocessed": Nodes: <mvcSiteMapNode title="Process" area="Admin" controller="ProcessMembers" action="Process" alternate="Unprocessed" /> <mvcSiteMapNode title="Change Status" area="Admin" controller="ProcessMembers" action="Process" alternate="Processed" /> Routes: The corresponding routes to these two nodes are (again, the only thing that distinguishes them is the value of the alternate parameter): context.MapRoute( "Process_New_Members", "Admin/Unprocessed/Process/{MemberId}", new { controller = "ProcessMembers", action = "Process", alternate="Unprocessed", MemberId = UrlParameter.Optional } ); context.MapRoute( "Change_Status_Old_Members", "Admin/Members/Status/Change/{MemberId}", new { controller = "ProcessMembers", action = "Process", alternate="Processed", MemberId = UrlParameter.Optional } ); What works: The Html.ActionLink helper uses the routes and produces the urls I expect: @Html.ActionLink("Process", MVC.Admin.ProcessMembers.Process(item.MemberId, "Unprocessed") // Output (alternate="Unprocessed" and item.MemberId = 12): Admin/Unprocessed/Process/12 @Html.ActionLink("Status", MVC.Admin.ProcessMembers.Process(item.MemberId, "Processed") // Output (alternate="Processed" and item.MemberId = 23): Admin/Members/Status/Change/23 In both cases the output is correct and as I expect. What doesn't work: Let's say my request involves the second option, ie, /Admin/Members/Status/Change/47, corresponding to alternate = "Processed" and a MemberId of 47. Debugging my static CurrentBranch property (see below), I find that SiteMap.CurrentNode shows: PreviousSibling: null Provider: {MvcSiteMapProvider.DefaultSiteMapProvider} ReadOnly: false ResourceKey: "" Roles: Count = 0 RootNode: {Home} Title: "Process" Url: "/Admin/Unprocessed/Process/47" Ie, for a request url of /Admin/Members/Status/Change/47, SiteMap.CurrentNode.Url evaluates to /Admin/Unprocessed/Process/47. The routes are interpreted by Html.ActionLlink as I expect, but are not evaluated by SiteMap.CurrentNode as I expect. • easiest and best way to make a server queue java

• Why is django admin not accepting Nullable foreign keys?

  Here is a simplified version of one of my models: class ImportRule(models.Model): feed = models.ForeignKey(Feed) name = models.CharField(max_length=255) feed_provider_category = models.ForeignKey(FeedProviderCategory, null=True) target_subcategories = models.ManyToManyField(Subcategory) This class manages a rule for importing a list of items from a feed into the database. The admin system won't let me add an ImportRule without selecting a feed_provider_category despite it being declared in the model as nullable. The database (SQLite at the moment) even checks out ok: >>> .schema ... CREATE TABLE "someapp_importrule" ( "id" integer NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY, "feed_id" integer NOT NULL REFERENCES "someapp_feed" ("id"), "name" varchar(255) NOT NULL, "feed_provider_category_id" integer REFERENCES "someapp_feedprovidercategory" ("id"), ); ... I can create the object in the python shell easily enough: f = Feed.objects.get(pk=1) i = ImportRule(name='test', feed=f) i.save() ...but the admin system won't let me edit it, of course. How can I get the admin to let me edit/create objects without specifying that foreign key?

• should the builder reset its build environment after delivering the product

  I am implementing a builder where in the deliverable is retrieved by calling Builder::getProduct() . The director asks various parts to build Builder::buildPartA() , Builder::buildPartB() etc. in order to completely build the product. My question is, once the product is delivered by the Builder by calling Builder::getProduct(), should it reset its environment (Builder::partA = NULL;, Builder::partB = NULL;) so that it is ready to build another product? (with same or different configuration?) I ask this as I am using PHP wherein the objects are by default passed by reference (nope, I don't want to clone them, as one of their field is a Resource) . However, even if you think from a language agnostic point of view, should the Builder reset its build environment ? If your answer is 'it depends on the case' what use cases would justify reseting the environment (and other way round) ? • Inserting contact with android and querying the result uri returns no entries

  Im developing an application which is dealing with the android contacts API. I implemented methods to insert, update and query contacts. So far everything worked (writing and reading contacts). At one point in my project Im experiencing a strange behaviour. I insert a contact using batch mode. I receive the URI to the RawContact. But the android documentation states, that the ContentResolver objects scope is the application's package, so you have on ContentResolver for the whole app. Am I right? What am I doing wrong? Why does the same rawContactUri return the contact at one place and does not on another place? And why do I get a lookup uri from a raw contact, which is not working at all?

  I'm trying to make a program that uploads a image to a webserver that accepts multipart file-uploads. More specificly i want to make a http POST request to http://iqs.me that sends a file in the variable "pic". I've made a lot of tries but i don't know if i've even been close. The hardest part seems to be to get a HttpURLConnection to make a request of the type POST. The response i get looks like it makes a GET. • Extension Methods - IsNull and IsNotNull, good or bad use?

  I like readability. So, I came up with an extension mothod a few minutes ago for the (x =! null) type syntax, called IsNotNull. Inversly, I also created a IsNull extension method, thus if(x == null) becomes if(x.IsNull()) and if(x != null) becomes if(x.IsNotNull()) However, I'm worried I might be abusing extension methods. Do you think that this is bad use of Extenion methods?

  I have a custom servercontrol that inherits from CompositeDataBoundControl. I have three templates: one header template, one footer template and one item template. The item template can contain a checkbox that I use to decide if I should delete the item. In the footer and/or header templates I have a button with a CommandName of "DeleteItem". Any suggestions on how to fix this?

• ListView Parsing Persian xml

  I used a tutorial about listview parsing xm from internet and using LasyAdapter shows the items in listview. When I add persian characters in xml (into one of childnodes) the result is some boxes in listview (after showing the text in listview). The format of xml is UTF-8, too. I used typeface too (but didn't work). Besides when I type Pwesian into the application it shows alright but it can't show Persiann content parsed from xml. Thanks in advance. • Selecting rows without a value for Date/Time columns

  I'm running this query: SELECT TOP 1 [DVD Copy].[Stock No] FROM [DVD Copy] WHERE [DVD Copy].[Catalogue No] =[Forms]![New Rental]![Catalogue No] And [Issue Date] = Null; Which works fine without the null check for Issue Date. I'm trying to select rows without a Date in the Issue Date column. Is Null the wrong kind of value to use for here?
