• good free OCR with GUI for correcting errors (for Windows)

  I've used SimpleOCR, which has a nice GUI for correcting errors. Unfortunately it makes a lot of errors! (and suffers other bugs and limitations) On the other hand Tesseract is more accurate but has no GUI at all. Is there a free OCR program for Windows which has a nice GUI and a low error rate? I want it to highlight suspect words (by OCR uncertainty, not just spell checking) and show the original (bitmap) word while I'm editing the OCRed word similar to what SimpleOCR does: Open-source would be best, followed by freeware, then trial / crippleware a long way behind.

• Why does a browser dialog come up when an xmlhttprequest sends the wrong / no auth?

  How come the major browsers all bring up a login dialog when an xmlhttprequest does auth wrong or doesn't send it? I mean isn't this poor UI? Now a days it seems like a lot of people try http auth in jQuery, because theoretically it is quite easy - until the user fails to enter the correct data and is presented with the browsers dialog, which gets in their way, and they might have no idea what to do with it or why it's there? I don't know too much about these low level browser specifications but can someone bring this up with the RFC or webkit/gecko developers? jQuery digest auth could be powerful and user friendly if this was fixed. ** It seems like apache could also fix the problem on their side by not sending the header, but whichever one is the most secure way of doing this would be nice.

• Product Recommendation: Good job scheduler for windows servers?

  Looking for a mostly-GUI tool that is low cost (less then $1k, but not required) and allows you to create scheduled tasks and jobs without writing vbscript, batch files, or powershell. Something simple that speaks SMB/CIFS, SMTP, LDAP, etc. for such things as "delete some files based on a list of folders from this text file" or "disable all users with expired accounts" or "delete all disabled users not in this AD group". I've seen some of the big multi-OS enterprise task automation systems and they just look way overkill. We're a windows-only shop, Server 2003 or newer and there's got to be a simple non-agent based product that is drag-n-drop for some of this basic automation. Today we use all three languages mentioned above, and the scripts are not as reliable as a workflow-based-tool would be. Thanks.

  Hello, we're moving from Solaris to Redhat Linux, and trying to duplicate our low-latency setup, that, on solaris, includes the ndd settings related to TCP NO DELAY, and NAGLE ALGORITHM. I got the impression that those parameters are not all configurable system-wide, but still found some info. we have configured our applications to run with no nagle algorithm, but that is not sufficient. we have found an interesting RH article talking presenting the tcp_delack_min parameter, however, when browsing /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ , I can't find it there. would it be safe to assume that simply "adding" the parameter as it's said on the doc would be enough, or rather that the option is not supported by this version (would be strange, as RH specify that it "can be performed on a standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux installation") ? any other idea / recommendation to improve latency further ? thanks

• What's the difference between these Intel things?

  My head still spins with the various Intel "things" that may (or may not) need installing/configuring/yaddayadda'ing: Intel Rapid Storage Technology (is this driver? a software manager/package?), Intel Chipset (i.e., Intel INF Update Utility, Intel RST OROM, Intel RST driver, Intel Matrix Manager, etc. I think I have a basic understanding that the OROM is the low-level BIOS "driver", which communicates with the higher-level RST driver (in Windows). But what's the Chipset Installation software? What's the INF installation/update software? I'm confused as to what the other pieces are (or why there are so many to begin with). And as for a practical matter -- I'm wanting to upgrade my BIOS with a recent Intel OROM included, and then also update the Intel RST drivers in Windows -- BUT, as for the Windows side of things, I don't know what I should uninstall -- the Intel Chipset installer thing (through official uninstaller), Intel RST Manager, finding the individual Intel devices in Device Manager and right-clicking-uninstall/deleting, etc.

• Printer monitor software across multiple workstations (AD integrated)

  I was asked to see if there is any kind of (free) software that allows multiple people in an office that use the same printer to see what jobs have finished recently, which are queued and which is printing. Main reason is that sometimes multiple people have the same task where they need to print some kind of form, and they are unsure whether or not their colleague has already printed the file. Because the printer is AD integrated, they only see a short message when printing, but they do not see a proper printer queue. A simple tray icon/tool would be perfect, no real graphical user interface is required. If this turns out to be too hard to find, I will attempt to write a simple application or script for the job, but since this is a low priority job I decided to ask here first before I start messing around with scripting which isn't my forte. • Saving a Word document as Web Page, Filtered drastically reduces image resolution

  I have a document with hundreds of images. When I save the first image (right click and save picture) it ends up with a good resolution as shown below: However, when I save the document as Web Page, Filtered, all the images end up really low-res. Here's the exact same image afterwards: I've tried the following options in the Save As dialog with no luck: In Tools > Web Options... > Pictures > Target Monitor I've set the Pixels Per Inch to the highest value, 120. In Tools > Compress Pictures > Target Output I've set it to Print (220 ppi). Any ideas would be appreciated.

• Unmount Mass Storage USB Device from the Command Line in Linux

  I've searched high and low, and can't figure this one out. I have a older Olympus Camera (2001 or so). When I plug in the USB connection, I get the following log output: $ dmesg | grep sd [20047.625076] sd 21:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg7 type 0 [20047.627922] sd 21:0:0:0: [sdg] Attached SCSI removable disk Secondly, the drive is not mounted in the FS, but when I run gphoto2 I get the following error: $ gphoto2 --list-config *** Error *** An error occurred in the io-library ('Could not lock the device'): Camera is already in use. *** Error (-60: 'Could not lock the device') *** What command will unmount the drive. For example in Nautilus, I can right click and select "Safely Remove Device". After doing that, the /dev/sg7 and /dev/sdg devices are removed. Some things I've tried already are sdparm and sg3_utils, however I am unfamiliar with them, so it's possible I just didn't find the right command.

• Stream Music To Ventrilo From ESXi VM

  I would like to stream music to my Ventrilo server from a Windows XP virtual machine running on an ESXi host. I have followed the instructions outlined here to stream music from something like VLC to the Ventrilo server on another machine and it works fine. I have also added the lines: sound.present = "TRUE" sound.virtualDev = "es1371" sound.fileName = "-1" sound.autodetect = "TRUE" to my .vmx file, as suggested here (http://communities.vmware.com/thread/191878), to get a sound card in my VM. The problem I am having is that it seems that my VM is not outputting any sound, so there's nothing to stream through Ventrilo. The Device Manager on the VM shows that this new sound card has drivers and doesn't appear to have any concerns with it. Can someone point me in the right direction to get my desired outcome? Thanks! • DSP - Problems using the inverse Fast Fourier Transform

  I've been playing around a little with the Exocortex implementation of the FFT, but I'm having some problems. First, after calculating the inverse FFT of an unchanged frequency spectrum obtained by a previous forward FFT, one would expect to get the original signal back, but this is not the case. I had to figure out that I needed to scale the FFT output to about 1 / fftLength to get the amplitudes ok. Why is this? Second, whenever I modify the amplitudes of the frequency bins before calling the iFFT the signal gets distorted at low frequencies. However, this does not happen if I attenuate all the bins by the same factor. Let me put a very simplified example of the output buffer of a 4-sample FFT: // Bin 0 (DC) FFTOut[0] = 0.0000610351563 FFTOut[1] = 0.0 // Bin 1 FFTOut[2] = 0.000331878662 FFTOut[3] = 0.000629425049 // Central bin FFTOut[4] = -0.0000381469727 FFTOut[5] = 0.0 // Bin 3, this is a negative frequency bin. FFTOut[6] = 0.000331878662 FFTOut[7] = -0.000629425049 The output is composed of pairs of floats, each representing the real and imaginay parts of a single bin. So, bin 0 (array indexes 0, 1) would represent the real and imaginary parts of the DC frequency. As you can see, bins 1 and 3 both have the same values, (except for the sign of the Im part), so I guess these are the negative frequency values, and finally indexes (4, 5) would be the central frequency bin. To attenuate the frequency bin 1 this is what I do: // Attenuate the 'positive' bin FFTOut[2] *= 0.5; FFTOut[3] *= 0.5; // Attenuate its corresponding negative bin. • How to input 64-bit hex values in octave

  I'm trying to use Octave as a programmer's calculator. I want to input a 64-bit pointer, but when I do apparently the 64-bit value gets silently truncated to 32-bit: octave:44> base_ptr=0x1010101020202020 base_ptr = 538976288 octave:45> uint64(base_ptr) ans = 538976288 octave:46> printf("%lx\n", base_ptr) 20202020 So it seems like it's truncated the input value to the low 32-bits. I would use scanf, but the docs say it should only be used internally. How can I input the full 64-bit value? Alternately, is there some awesome free programmer's calculator out there for Windows? (I know Windows calculator has a programmer's mode but I would like arbitrary variable support). I tried using my ti-89 but it also doesn't support 64-bit hex.

• How to convert eps file to a large jpeg image

  Hello, I am using Linux. I want to convert an eps file to jpeg file. I find that I can use "convert" command. However, the resulting image looks very small. I want to enlarge the jpeg file by -resize option. It seems not to work. The resulting image is a pure black one. Do anyone has the same problem? Here are more details: 1: if I use convert -scale 1000x1000 your.eps your.jpg the resulting image looks like a low quality image. The eps vector image is not scaled properly. 2: if I use convert -geometry 300% your.eps your.jpg I get a pure black image. • Recommended RAM and disc space for Oracle 11g on Windows

  I need to provide the recommended amount of RAM and disc space (divided in two partitions) so the customer can create an appropriate virtual machine to run Oracle. All I could find in the documentation was a brief listing with minimum RAM and typical/advanced install types. The virtual machine will run latest Oracle Standard Edition One (11g release 2 so far) under Windows Server 2008 x64 and will host a reasonably low traffic web application. How much RAM and disc must I ask for in order to be safe? (Feel free to ask for further details if I've omitted something relevant.) Update: Rough estimations: Database size: 10 MB after installation Growth rate: +3MB per day on average Size of database 'active' data: (not sure of what this means, there's not actual archive so I guess all data is current) Amount of data written per second in peak hours: a few KB Number of client sessions: 3 or 4 at most Frequency and response size of most heavy requests: some reports make heavy table JOINS that need up to 20 seconds to complete but they won't return more than a few thousand rows with plain text. The app also handles BLOBs (typical size from 50KB to 200KB)

• How can you control the speed of fan that comes with the Antec Sonata III case from the outside?

  The Antec Sonata III case comes with a nice 120mm fan that has a 3 speed switch. Most of the time the fan is fine on low, but for games or other taxing workloads I need to switch it to medium or high. Opening the case every time I want to change the setting is kind of a pain. Has anyone figured out a way to control the speed from the outside of the case without going nuclear (e.g. cutting holes in the case)? Other than this annoyance I like the case and the fan that comes with it.

• 1000 HZ linux kernel necessary if I have tickless and high resolution timer?

  I am trying to improve performance on my server. I have a few processes that need low jitter (less than 10ms variance). I have a load average of 4 maximum on an i7-920 (4 physical cores, 8 with HT). There are about 10 processes ranging from 40% to 90% of a core user mode. System usage is 3% total. Total CPU usage is 80% max. Will setting the kernel from 100hz to 1000hz improve the jitter if tickless and high resolution timers are already set? This page seems to indicate it still does something. https://lkml.org/lkml/2009/4/28/401 How about changing from voluntary (PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY) to preemptible (PREEMPT)?

  I have OpenFiler storage server. Without installing Windows and MSM, I want to create raid10 array from disks 2 to 21. I have already successfully installed MegaCli to OpenFiler but I'm stuck in figuring out the correct command line for creating a raid 10 array. • What do I need to write a small game on Linux?

  I want to make a simple game: 2d, single-player, without tons of animations and special effects. I am not interested in ready to use game engines, I want to learn to write some code in a quite universal language. I am using Linux (AMD64) and looking for something easy with nice library for games. I do not want to mix few languages, most of them are in fact fast enough themselves for my needs. Cross platform would be an advantage, however all I need is a good Linux support. I have been considering few solutions. Ruby + Language looks very nice. + I am going to learn Ruby. - I am afraid I can have problems with additional libraries. - This thread about game libraries for Ruby could be longer. SDL + C + It is used for games. + It is very easy to set up. + There is a lot of additional libraries. + It is cross-platform. - The solution is quite low level. - The language is sometimes quite hard to read. QT + C++ + It is very easy to set up. + The standard QT libraries supports everything I can possibly need. + It is cross-platform. + The documentation is good. - The compilation is slow. - The language looks horrible. - The size of standard QT libraries is too big to comprehend. Environment of web browser + I am going to learn something more about this environment. + It is somewhat used for games. + It is quite cross-platform. - It would be too much experimental. • Configure Iptables to allow a PHP-app accessing a port-nr

  I have a php-application which connects to another app called Solr (database search engine). I can via this php app add/remove documents (records) from the Solr index. However, the Solr security is low, and anybody with the right port nr can access Solr and remove documents (records). I wonder, is it possible to ONLY allow my own php-app to have access to Solr somehow? Prefferably via Iptables. I am thinking I can only allow my own servers IP to that port, and it would solve my problem, because PHP is a server-side code. But I am not sure. About the Php-app: The website is a classifieds website, and when users wants to add or remove classifieds, they do so through a php app, which is this one. The app has a function which connects to solr and updates the database (index). I appreciate detailed answers... Thanks

• Best suited multi-function printer for Linux usage from a few choices

  I want a cheap multi-function printer for Linux usage. I'm looking for rock solid scanning and printing that works with big images. I'd prefer drivers that are available in Debian, or other drivers that are open source, but will settle for proprietary drivers if they are well contained and clean. Some choices I have are: Samsung SCX-4300 HP LaserJet M1120 MFP Samsung SCX-4500 Canon i-SENSYS MF4010 Brother DCP-7040 I am also interested in opinions what printer communication language is best for Linux usage for cheap printers. PostScript is nice, of course, but low-end PostScript printers often have problems when printing complex (large) PostScript files. It seems Samsung printers use SPL for communication, HP uses XQX and ZJS, then there's ofcourse PCL.

• Run Windows batch file on schedule as non-Administrator user

  I'm running Windows XP x64 SP2. I have a Windows batch file that with some Robocopy commands that I want to run on schedule. I created a scheduled task for it, running as a dedicated user (not the user I'm logged on as), but it simply did not run. I could see successful logon events in the security log, so it got that far, but the commands in the batch file definitely weren't getting executed. After reading through all of http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winservermanager/thread/d47d116e-10b9-44f0-9a30-7406c86c2fbe/ I tried making the target user account an Administrator and that fixed it - the batch file ran just fine. Nothing else seemed to work. The thing is, I want it to run under a low-privileged account. Does anyone know how can I get a batch file to run on schedule as a non-Administrator?

  Several years ago, I tried a CMOS-based webcam and it really sucked. It needed an extremely brightly-lit room to work. Around the same time, I also tried a CCD camera and it worked great. But since then, I've heard that CMOS technology has advanced considerably. Is it still the case that CCD webcams will give you a better picture, or can CMOS webcams also produce a picture of similar quality at moderate to low light levels? What type of camera is used in modern integrated webcams and cameras? If CMOS cameras actually are competitive these days, how do you tell if a webcam has a newer-generation CMOS sensor instead of one of the older sensors?

• Is there a way to create a consistent snapshot/SnapMirror across multiple volumes?

  We use a NetApp FAS 6-series filer with an application that spans multiple volumes. For backup purposes I would like to create a consistent snapshot that spans these volumes at the same point in time (or at least with an extremely low delta); additionally, we'd like to to use SnapMirror to replace the production environment to test volumes. The problem is in creating a consistent snapshot/SnapMirror, since these commands are not transactional and do not take multiple parameters. I tried scripting consecutive "snap create" or "snapmirror resync" commands via SSH, but there's always a 0.5-2 second difference between each snapshot. It's currently "good enough", but I'm seriously concerned about the consistency impact with increased load (we're currently in pre-production). Has anyone managed to create a consistent snapshot that spans several volumes? How did you pull it off?

Basically I'm not looking to spend a lot of money, in fact i'd rather to spend as little as possible and get low end or mid range card, I'm not really playing games all that much so pretty much anything will do, I'd prefer 2xx series though. Current Mac Pro sells w/ GT120, Apple sells upgrade kit for $149 (which is okay, I just not sure if I'll be able to use this card on such an old Mac Pro)

• Download acceleration with jigdo?

  Im using jigdo-lite to download a Debian DVD ISO. I already have the CD version of the image, so I added the CD files to the task. Now I need to download many files (not all) of the DVD ISO. The default jigdo-lite uses wget to download files. It seems jigdo (wget) downloads only one file at a time with one connection. So I'm getting a low download speed. How can I accelerate the download speed using jigdo? Possible Solutions: Using different download manager with jigdo. Is it possible? If yes, How? Using jigdo (wget) to download multiple files at once. How? Getting download links of remaining files to download so that they can be downloaded with a download manager and later added to jigdo iso. How?
