• Remote mouse pointer not visible in VNC

  I used VNC desktops as a kind of collaboration server, as shared planning and pair programming environment for a long time. Now my latest iteration uses a KVM guest running Fedora 17 "Beefy Miracle", the Cinnamon desktop environment and an X11VNC server. The X11VNC server is automatically started with the desktop environment using the following command: x11vnc -localhost -many -shared -display :0 -bg My problem is that depending on the VNC client, the mouse pointer of the remote system which is shown through VNC is not synchronized to my client. I really need this, so I can see what my partner is doing on the desktop. When using Vinagre 3.2.1 on Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot (11.10) or Vinagre 2.3.0.3 on Debian Squeeze (6.0) and I don't have my local mouse pointer inside the VNC view, I cannot see the mouse pointer of my remote system, nor its movement. When using TightVNC on Windows 7, I can recognize a mouse pointer trace for very short amounts of time after moving the mouse, but it is not clearly visible. Using UltraVNC on Windows 7 the mouse pointer is clearly visible all the time. With Gnome 2 I never had any problems with remote pointer synchronization, using exactly the same clients. I suspect this could have something to do with Cinnamon's dependency on 3D acceleration. On the other hand, it doesn't change anything to start Cinnamon's fallback environment Cinnamon 2D. Update: Same effect when I use Gnome 3.

So I don't screw it up, I'd like to pre-record typing the more complicated bits of the source code and play it back. Most programs I've found that do similar things (like AutoHotKey) dump the text instantaneously as a giant block. Is there any program that will do this and allow me to adjust the play-back speed?

• Synchronize folders on different computers without cloud and without network just internet

  I have two computers with windows 7, one in my home town and one in another town. So they are not in private network but I have internet on both. They have exactly the same file structure. I am searching for program that can keep the data equal. I know about dropbox or google drive but they are cloud and I don't want to use them. Also they are using folder that you should copy your data in it. There is another programs that are like a server, just put something and after that you can download it but I dont need them. I want just to point which folders to be synchronized and the program make the synchronization. The sync can be in real time if the two computers are powered, or after few time when they are powered. Or it can lock another computer synced folder till update is required. At all this is my documents that I want to be synced in all my computers and to be changed from where I want. In fact I can move the updates with flash but if some program save the changes and make them on another computer with one click it will facilitate my work.

• Synchronize Active Directory to Database

  We are in a situation where we would like to offer our customers to be able to manage their users themselves. It is around 300 customers with up to a total of 10.000 users. Besides creating, updating and removing users, they will very often read information about users for statics and other useful informations available. All this functionality, should be available from an Intranet web page (.NET Framework 4) that the users will access through Citrix or similar. Now the problem is that we would really like the users not to query AD directly for each request, but rather make them hit a database that is synchronized with AD. It would be sufficient to run this synchronization a few time each day (maybe every 5. hour). When they create a user, it should not be available right away, but reviewed and then created within two days (the next step would be to remove this manual review, but that's out of scope for this question). What do you think about this synchronization of AD? Does anyone have any experience with it and is it something that is done in other organizations, where you will have lots of requests which is better handled by a database than AD (I presume)? Are there any techniques out there for writing such a script that synchronizes AD with database tables? My primary concern is the groups/members relations which can be rather complicated. Or are there software that synchronizes AD with a database? Any comments will be much appreciated. Thank you.

• Optimal disk partitions for database setup (15 Drives)

  We are setting up a new database system and have 15 drives to play with (+2 on-board for the OS). With a total of 15 drives would it be better to setup all 14 as one RAID-10 block (+1 hot spare) OR split into two RAID-10 sets one for Data (8 disks) and one for logs/backups (6 disks). My question boils down to the following: is there a specific point where having more drives in a RAID-10 setup will out preform having the drives broken into smaller RAID-10 sets.

• recommendations for efficient offsite remote backup solution of vm's

  I am looking for recommendations for backing up my current 6 vm's(and soon to grow to up to 20). Currently I am running a two node proxmox cluster(which is a debian base using kvm for virtualization with a custom web front end to administer). I have two nearly identical boxes with amd phenom II x4's and asus motherboards. Each has 4 500 GB sata2 hdd's, 1 for the os and other data for the proxmox install, and 3 using mdadm+drbd+lvm to share the 1.5 TB's of storage between the two machines. I mount lvm images to kvm for all of the virtual machines. I currently have the ability to do live transfer from one machine to the other, typically within seconds(it takes about 2 minutes on the largest vm running win2008 with m$ sql server). I am using proxmox's built-in vzdump utility to take snapshots of the vm's and store those on an external harddrive on the network. I then have jungledisk service (using rackspace) to sync the vzdump folder for remote offsite backup. This is all fine and dandy, but it's not very scalable. For one, the backups themselves can take up to a few hours every night. With jungledisk's block level incremental transfers, the sync only transfers a small portion of the data offsite, but that still takes at least a half an hour. The much better solution would of course be something that allows me to instantly take the difference of two time points (say what was written from 6am to 7am), zip it, then send that difference file to the backup server which would instantly transfer to the remote storage on rackspace. I have looked a little into zfs and it's ability to do send/receive. That coupled with a pipe of the data in bzip or something would seem perfect. However, it seems that implementing a nexenta server with zfs would essentially require at least one or two more dedicated storage servers to serve iSCSI block volumes (via zvol's???) to the proxmox servers. I would prefer to keep the setup as minimal as possible (i.e. NOT having separate storage servers) if at all possible. I have also briefly read about zumastor. It looks like it could also do what I want, but it appears to have halted development in 2008. So, zfs, zumastor or other?

  I'm looking for an industrial strength cloud file storage system. It will be used by multiple people in a startup. Our requirements: Transparent file system access: files and folders in the file system must be able transparently access (read and write) files in the cloud; files must be synchronized whenever network access is available and buffered otherwise. The system must be usable by non-technical people. Access control: we need to control who can access which files, at least on a very coarse basis. e.g., the developers will be able to access the system design documents, only the corporate folks can access recruiting documents, and only management can access certain corporate documents. Dropbox provides this via Sharing folders, but that's not adequate, if I understand it correctly, because there's no authentication of the sharing user. so the cloud service should have a notion of an account (our startup) with multiple users with distinct credentials and rights for each user Clients: it must be accessible from Macs and PCs; I would hope that it supports Linux (e.g., Ubuntu) too Security: it must provide robust security Backup: the cloud service must reliably backup the files Versioning: change version history, is a big plus, but not required Not free: we're willing to pay for the service So far, we've reviewed the following, albeit not completely thoroughly: Dropbox: has all except 1) Access control, which is provided via Sharing folders, but that's not adequate, if I understand it correctly, because there's no authentication of the sharing user. and 2) Security, as discussed here http://www.economist.com/blogs/babbage/2011/05/internet_security and here http://blog.dropbox.com/?p=821. • How can you turn off alternate screen in OSX's Terminal.app?

  altscreen is evil. If you don't know what I'm talking about, see this page for visual demonstration. Problem is, there doesn't seem to be a way to stop it with Terminal.app (under OSX), when you're not using screen. Yes, you can edit terminfo definition, but that's rather blunt hammer. Plus that solution might break if Apple decides to update relevant term's definition in some patch. Is there some clean way to convince Terminal.app to block altscreen usage?

• suggestions for fast reliable proxy IPs like codeen but with posting?

  Hi, I am looking for a list like one offered by codeen http://codeen.cs.princeton.edu/ of fast reliable proxy servers.. I just want to be able to "post" on usenet or yahoo groups with them.. I think the codeen ones don't allow HTTP-POST I don't need them for downloading or for torrents, or even for any images.. they can block images to keep browsing faster. • Dual DC Time Service

  I believe I'm having an issue with my Domain Controllers and Time Server. On my back up DC, I keep seeing a warning stating "The time service has stopped advertising as a time source because the local clock is not synchronized." Does this mean that my backup DC believes it's a Time Server? My PDC should be the time server and I have gone through setting up the PDC as the time server. I was not around for the original setup of the time server with the old PDC and Backup DC. But I believe the old PDC was the time server so I setup the new PDC as the new time server, when I decommissioned the old PDC. Is it possible that the Backup DC was setup as the time server and it still thinks it's suppose to be giving out time to everyone? It makes it really hard to concentrate and since I can't really move my PC to another part of the house I was thinking of getting a decent pair of noise-canceling headphones. • Is it possible to map a network path to any cloud storage hosts?

I don't see any obvious ways on Google, or SkyDrive web sites. I know they each have their custom applications to access the cloud storage files. • Multiline Equation won't center and align on equals sign

  I have a multiline equation which I wish to align on the '=' and center the equation block on the page. I have selected align on '=' and center as a group, however the equation group becomes left justified on the page (and aligned on the =). No matter what I do I cannot get it to concurrently center the group on the page and also align on the '='. Does anyone know what setting at what level would cause this type of behavior? (I'm using MS Word 2011 on OS X 10.8)
