  • how does a web application cope with thousands of requests?

    I went to a few websites and noticed that they all use AJAX technology for many tasks such as chat, messages, and so forth. They use a lot of httprequests obviously. My question is if you build a simple website using AJAX and you expected only few people per hour and then you start to have like 1,000 members logged per hour - can a single web application handle more requests per hour if you just upgrade to faster bigger servers or do you have to rewrite the code? Exactly how do you "scale" the web application?

  • Hide from google while developing

    I will be building a (wordpress) web site. While I am developing, other team members will be pushing content. I'd like to have it hidden from google while under development. It will be hosted on godaddy. I have thought of not pointing the domain name to it until live and using "preview dns", or buying a static IP during development. Or hosting dev site in a sub-directory ("/dev/") until ready and then moving it up a level. If in the dev directory I'd add htaccess or robots.txt to not crawl. Is any of this a bad idea? Will google penalize for any of this - like search by IP and then associate that with the domain later on? Any better ideas?

    I am trying to read data from a bluetooth barcode scanner (KDC300) using C. Here is the code I have so far, and the program successfully establishes a bluetooth connection to the scanner, but when a barcode is scanned, no input is displayed on the screen (Eventually more will be done with the data, but we have to get it working first, right).     Hi, I have developed web applications using JSF (myfaces components). But in these days of responsive UI, JSF doesnt fare well. I m hearing a lot about AJAX, GWT, etc. So i wanted your opinion on which web technology/framework should i learn inorder to develop web applications for enterprise products. Some of the web technologies that i m hearing are: ICE Faces (With AJAX Bridge support) GWT extJS and extGWT JavaFX Apache Wicket Jquery AJAX Open laszlo Which of the above or the combination of the above would help me ? Some of the parameters on which you can rate these web technologies are: Ease of learning Maintainability of web application code Community support IDE support - Eclipse or NetBeans Off the shelf component availability (like textbox,table grids, option menus) License - Does it cost for commercial use ? User Experience - responsive UI. Shouldnt be sluggish A similar question on SO does answer my question partially. Would want more info though. EDIT: Answers collated: Based on the answers : AJAX would be the best thing to start for learning fundamentals, then learn JQUERY. Any component based frame work that can complement ajax,jquery ? Edit 2: If i had to design a web application like StackOverFlow (in java platform) which would be the best choice to learn and adopt?     I'm using .NET 2.0 and Visual Studio 2005 to try to create a web service that can be consumed both as SOAP/XML and JSON. I read Dave Ward's Answer to the question How to return JSON from a 2.0 asmx web service (in addition to reading other articles at Encosia.com), but I can't figure out how I need to set up the code of my asmx file in order to work with JSON using jQuery. Two Questions: How do I enable JSON in my .NET 2.0 ASMX file? What's a simple jQuery call that could consume the service using JSON? Also, I notice that since I'm using .NET 2.0, I i'm not able to implement using System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptService.   • How do I implement page authorizaton in ASP.NET using a SQL store instead of web.config?

    For instance, the way we're doing it now is like thus: (in the web.config) <location path="somePath"> <system.web> <authorization> <allow roles="approvedRoles"/> <deny users="*"/> </authorization> </system.web> </location> And what I would like to do instead is to store this information in SQL somewhere so that we can manipulate the information more easily. But we want to keep the same functionality that having the information in web.config provides, just like we can use a SqlRoleProvider instead of hardcoding roles in the app. So in other words, if a user currently tries to goto "somePath" and they're not a member of "approvedRoles" then they get redirected back to default.aspx, and if they are a member of "approvedRoles" then they get the page. I want to do the same thing, but without using web.config as the authorization mechanism. So what I'm NOT asking is how do I go about defining roles, or how do I handle logging in to the database, but specifically how do I store the above information in SQL instead of web.config. Actually, I'll take "anywhere but web.config" for now. Any ideas? Is this possible using a "Provider" class? I'm just looking for pointers on what to inherit and maybe some technet documentation. In this regard my googlefoo is lacking since I don't really know where to point. Am I really only looking for AzMan? Is this location-authorization-via-SQL already defined in the default aspnetdb somewhere and I'm missing it? For that matter, has this question already been asked on SO and I've missed it? What would you google?

  • How do I secure a .NET Web Service for use by an iPhone application?

    Hello, The title says it all, I have a Web Service written in .NET that provides data for an iPhone application. It will also allow the application make a "reservation." Currently it's all internal to the corporate network but obviously when the iPhone application is published I will need ensure the Web Service is available externally. How would I go about securing the Web Service? There are two aspects I'm looking into: Authentication for accessing the web service Protection for the data being transferred I'm no so bothered about the data being passed back and forth as it will be viewable in the application anyway (which will be free). The key issue for me is preventing users from accessing the Web Service and making reservations themselves. At the moment I am considering encrypting any strings in the XML data passed back and forth so only the client can effectively use the web service sidestepping the need for authentication and providing protection for the data. This is the only model I have seen but I think the overheads on the iPhone and even for the web service make for a poor user experience. Any solutions at all would be most welcome? Thanks

    I have quite simple task to accomplish - I have to set up the security for web services ( basic authentication with hardcoded in WLES user id and password). I set the web.xml (see code fragment below) but I have tough time configuring WebLogic. I added IdentityAssertionAuthenticator Authentication Provider, set it as Required, modified DefaultAuthenticator as Optional and I went to deployed application's security and set the role to "thisIsUser" and at some point it worked, but not anymore (I redeployed war file and set web service security the same way but no avail.)     I am trying to semi-securely erase a bunch of hard drives. The following is working at 20-50Mb/s dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda But dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sda seems not to work. Also when I type dd if=/dev/random of=stdout It only gives me a few bytes regardless of what I pass it for bs= and count= Am I using /dev/random wrong? What other info should I look for to move this troubleshooting forward? Is there some other way to do this with a script or something like makeMyLifeEasy | dd if=stdin of=/dev/sda Or something like that...

I have a simple html page that I use to make the AJAX request to the web service. How can I debug what's going on in the web service in Visual Studio? Because the HTML ajax request doesn't seem "tied in" to the web service, which is located on my local IIS service, I can't figure out how to debug it.

A single web site will be used for both mobile browsers and desktop browsers. If users are accessing the web app from mobile browsers, users will be redirect to mobile specific pages and will get normal pages if users are accessing from desktop browsers. In this demo app, the mobile specific pages are maintained in an ASP.NET MVC Area named Mobile and mobile users will be redirect to MVC Area Mobile. Let’s add a new area named Mobile to the ASP.NET MVC app. For adding Area, right click the ASP.NET MVC project and  select Area from Add option. Our mobile specific pages using jQuery Mobile will be maintained in the Mobile Area.   • Dual booting on separate hard drives

    I have windows XP professional installed on 1 hard drive and Ubuntu 10.10 on my second hard drive. On start up the computer completely skips the grub menu and boots straight into 10.10. I have tried running os-prober with the windows hard drive mounted and then updating grub but it didnt work. Any ideas? I have changed the boot order so that the HDD with xp on it is first however the computer still booted into linux. I tried running grub-install /dev/sda and got this /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Sector 32 is already in use by FlexNet; avoiding it. This software may cause boot or other problems in future. Please ask its authors not to store data in the boot track.. /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Sector 33 is already in use by FlexNet; avoiding it. This software may cause boot or other problems in future. No error reported I checked using disk utility and the code for my xp hard drive is sdb so i ran the camand grub-install /dev/sdb shich gave me this Installation finished. No error reported. So i rebooted but it still didnt work. Any other ideas? Any ideas how I can fix this? gcc-4.4.4 and 4.5.0 were compiled with: binutils-2.20.1 gmp-5.0.1 mpc-0.8.2 mpfr-2.4.2

  • How can i use the `eject` command on a computer i have SSH'd into?

    So if i do eject on my machine, it works exactly as expected, however, if i ssh into the machine next to me, and do the same thing, it does not work... my computer: eject: using default device `cdrom' eject: device name is `cdrom' eject: expanded name is `/dev/cdrom' eject: `/dev/cdrom' is a link to `/dev/sr0' eject: `/dev/sr0' is not mounted eject: `/dev/sr0' is not a mount point eject: checking if device "/dev/sr0" has a removable or hotpluggable flag eject: `/dev/sr0' is not a multipartition device eject: trying to eject `/dev/sr0' using CD-ROM eject command eject: CD-ROM eject command succeeded other computer: eject: using default device `cdrom' eject: device name is `cdrom' eject: expanded name is `/dev/cdrom' eject: `/dev/cdrom' is a link to `/dev/sr0' eject: `/dev/sr0' is not mounted eject: `/dev/sr0' is not a mount point eject: checking if device "/dev/sr0" has a removable or hotpluggable flag eject: `/dev/sr0' is not a multipartition device eject: unable to open `/dev/sr0' if i look in the /dev/ dir, then i find cdrom which is a symlink to sr0 - as mentioned by the verbose outputs of eject -v. On my machine, if i try and look at it, if the drive is open, it will close it, and then give this: $ less sr0 sr0 is not a regular file (use -f to see it) so $ less -f sr0 sr0: No medium found but if i do it on the other computer, $ less -f sr0 sr0: Permission denied so i look at the files more, and get this on both machines: $ ls -la sr0 brw-rw----+ 1 root cdrom 11, 0 Nov 12 10:13 sr0 Does anyone know a way around this? I do not have root access.
