• Javascript slider with fade

  I've been scouring the web for a slider that offers a particular effect, but I can't find one. I'm hoping that someone here will be able to help out... Specifically, I need a slider that will slide left and right through a series of HTML DIVs. However, I also need the old slide to fade out as it slides. This is because I don't what to have a visible frame around the the slider, so I don't want the old slide to be cropped against an invisible edge. It's hard to explain in words, so here's a graphic. In each case the green slide is entering the view, the red one is existing. Is possible, I'd like the slide to use CSS3 transitions where available for the smoothest possible effect. Has only ever come across such a beast?

• Caching preventing users seeing site updates

  I'm experiencing a caching issue I can't explain. This is happening across browsers, IPs and ISPs. If a user force-refreshes, they see the new content. If they then refresh or return to the page, the old one displays. I've tried using headers via PHP such as header( 'Expires: Sat, 26 Jul 1997 05:00:00 GMT' ); header( 'Last-Modified: ' . gmdate( 'D, d M Y H:i:s' ) . ' GMT' ); header( 'Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate' ); header( 'Cache-Control: post-check=0, pre-check=0', false ); header( 'Pragma: no-cache' ); Laid out correctly, at the very beginning of the file. The problem persists. A pan-ISP proxy is unlikely. Suggestions?

• Writing a basic C Shell - understanding argv[] [on hold]

  I have an assignment for my class to write a basic C Shell. I have found many pages that explain parts of it and some fully implemented code. I'm not going to copy, i'm just using it right now as a way to get started. So I'm at the beginning of this project obviously. One example I am looking at parses the user's input and stores a pointer to the beginning of the argument in char *argv[3]; Am I just misunderstanding this or would this technically break if there are more than 3 arguments? (say /a.out arg1 arg2 arg3 etc). Would I wanna malloc this somehow? I know a.out is considered argv[0], and the arguments argv1 - however many there are. It's probably bad practice to have too many arguments for a program, but I still would at least want to address it as I don't know what my TA's are going to use to test my shell.

• Ubuntu 12.04 wallpaper problem when using two monitors

  I am using two monitors, the main resolution is 1920x1080 and the secondary is 1440x900. Everything seems to work fine (with default drivers, fglrx crashes bad), besides windows opening in the wrong monitor (even when the main is set correctly), but now what I am trying to fix is the wallpaper problem, here's an image to explain it easier: http://i.imgur.com/msLRR.jpg It also happens with gradients. The secondary monitor is physically aligned like in the image, lower than the other, the wallpaper on the main screen seems to keep the size of the lower resolution, and then it start at the correct resolution the last part at right. Any way to fix this? I am using Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome-Shell 3.4.1, the vga is a Radeon HD 6950 UPDATE I went to gnome-tweak-tool and disabled "Have file manager handle the desktop", now it looks ok on both monitors, but I can't have icons on my desktop, so I am still interested in solving it. UPDATE2 Disabling "Have file manager handle the desktop", in gnome-tweak-tool and then re-enabling it seems to work, but has to be done every time you turn on the PC.

• Encryption password

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS I thought that everything in my Documents folder was being backed up by Ubuntu1, as everytime I put a file in my documents folder a box popped up stating backing up file. When I looked at the Left hand list of programmes on my desktop screen there was an extra Box in the list. Clicked the Box and it stated encryption Password required. It seems the latest files have not been backed up as an Encryption Password is required. Can anyone explain for me, what is this Encription Password and how do I get it.

• Is an in-app purchase required to unlock game in order to bypass pirating acceptable?

  I'm considering writing a mobile game and looking at distribution. The game will have a server requirement, which means I will have to pay for bandwidth, hosting, processor time, etc. Because of that I'll need to make at least a little money off this thing. According to the press piracy is rampant in the android community. To get around this, I'm thinking of implementing a simple model where the game is free, perhaps allowing play for X number of turns or something, and then requiring an in-app purchase to continue to play. I would clearly explain this in the app description, and the in-app purchase would be managed per account so it would be linked to your google play account so you wouldn't have to re-purchase every time you get a new device. Would gamers accept this model or see it as unreasonable?

  Are there any alternatives to voxel based terrains? Such terrain should be fully destructable, allow for arches, overhangs, preserve sharp features where needed and keep consistent topology. Maybe you can explain the problem that makes you ask this question? Voxel based terrain is basically just using a 3D grid of data to store data. There are lots of ways to render that data, but it doesn't get much simpler for storing it. – Byte56 Current isosurface extraction methods aren't most effective/bug-free. Cubical Marching Squares seem to solve most of the issues, however it is a relatively new method and there aren't too many resources about it. (I've found single university paper) Even if we stick to CMS, when we want to add multi-material support, we can either divide surface into multiple meshes, or pass a texture array or texture atlas to shaders, then we are limited to set amount of textures and additionally increase memory-usage alot.

  i would like to backup my dedicated server which is my web server hosting various sites and email, so that I can update the os to Ubuntu 12.04, and basically restore back to 10.04 if things go wrong. I have a local machine that I can install 12.04 onto an then I was going to rsinc between the two, but I am fairly clueless when it comes to linux. I can ssh into the remote server and gain root access. can anyone explain if i need to backup the whole server hard drive or just some of the files? Thanks Timmo.

• How can I fix indicator's behaviour?

  I recently switched to Ubuntu 11.10 from Windows. The panel has been acting really weird lately. What happens is when I click on sound icon to change volume, the menu for Bluetooth connectivity pops up. When I try to hover over the popped up menu, the latter disappears the moment I move my mouse. It is just not one icon that has been troubling me. When I click on network icon in the panel, it pops-up the menu for Chat and then the popped-up Chat menu just disappears as soon as there is a movement of the mouse. I hope I was able to explain my situation. I am sure you must be aware of this issue. Please advise. Thanks.

• What is the standard way of delivering HTML5 games to portals and such?

  Let me explain what I mean by "standard way of delivering"... Think about Flash games sites. Flash games can be delivered as a single file, either hosted by the site, or, I guess, provided by someone else. HTML5 games, on the other hand, don't have something so standard. Usually, they have their own page, and portals just link to that page. I think that it greatly hinders the purpose of that portal, because, well, you want people to stay on your site and look for other games. Now, I think that a some kind of iframe way of delivering games would help solve this problem greatly. I saw some games doing that, and they were often included on tutorial sites to show a live example, which is obviously a great thing. So, is there a standard at all? Any suggestions? Can you create a game that just preloads itself in an iframe (I heard something about a "single document" or something)?

  In a presentation, i stumbled upon the Statement "JavaScript is a Language everybody uses, yet nearly noone seems to find it neccessary to learn how it works". And indeed, not many of the programmers i know could explain javascript's prototype concept, or why functions need to be 'bound' to this. CSS seems to be another example of this behaviour: everyone knows how to put a 'class' to an element, and to write a style .myclass { ... }, but only a few even know of margin-collapse. My question is: are there more of those languages, technologies, concepts, that are so prevalent that we dont even notice them as something worth learning while we use them?

I would kindly ask students/beginners to refrain from jumping and answering quickly and without thinking. At the beginning of my career I thought that stupidest thing you can do is disregard the referential integrity. Today, after "few" projects I'm thinking different. Quite different. • Rsyslog problem after ubuntu upgrade 10.4 to 12.4

  I was using Ubuntu 10.4 until last week for storing the log informations of a external device with rsyslog. After upgrading to ubuntu 12.4 the logging of TCP doesn't works anymore. (There are just no pakets visible - not even with tcpdump - aold ubuntu machine still sees the pakets.) UDP works with the identical configuration on the ubuntu machine and a "use UDP" on the external device. Are there any changes in rsyslog, that could explain this? • Geographic location settings

  I am building an website. It has an .nl domain. Now only my domain is showing up on google.nl I hope I can change this somehow that it could be findable in all google's (like google.com / co.uk) and so on. If I look on google forums. They say go to webmaster tools and change your geographic position over there. But I have added this site and I am not able to change it there because there is no select box. I dont have any idea were to search (yes I searched on google offcourse) or where to ask for this special problem. So maybe here can someone redirect me or explain me what is possible and what not. • I removed Ubuntu from the BIOS menu but it comes back.

  For reasons too long to explain, I reluctantly removed Ubuntu from my computer. After completely removing it and deleting the partition that it was installed onto, I discovered that I still had two Ubuntu entries in the boot order in my BIOS menu. I deleted them by following the instructions in this answer: http://askubuntu.com/a/63613/54934 As I was doing it, everything appeared to go smoothly. However, upon reboot one of them came back. What's going on here? How do I delete it permanently? I'll gladly provide any other information that may be needed to diagnose the problem. Thanks.

  Background: I need to build a main application with some operations (CRUD and more) (-in winforms), I need to make another application which will re-use some of the functions of the main application (-in webforms). I understood that using service layer is the best approach here. If I understood correctly the service should be calling the function on the BL layer (correct me if I'm wrong) The dilemma: In my main winform UI - should I call the functions from the BL, or from the service? (please explain why) Should I create a service for every single function on the BL even if I need some of the functions only in one UI? for example - should I create services for all the CRUD operations, even though I need to re-use only update operation in the webform?   How many bytes an array occupies in Java? Assume It's a 64bit machine and also assume there are N elements in an array, so all these elements would take up 2*N, 4*N or 8*N bytes for different types of array. And a lecture in Coursera says that it would occupy 2*N+24, 4*N+24 or 8*N+24 bytes for a N element array and the 24 byte is called overhead, but didn't explain it. Also objects have overheads, which is 16 bytes. What exactly are these overheads? Also, do these overheads only exist in Java? How about C, C++ and Python?
