• Tic-Tac-Toe game AI

  I'm looking into creating a simple tic tac toe/noughts and crosses game in Actionscript3 and am trying to understand the ideas behind the AI used in a game like this. I've seen some simplistic examples online but from what I've read a game tree or something like minimax is the best way to go about this. Can anyone help explain or reference any good examples of this? I've seen that there is a library called as3ds - data structures for game developers which has a number of classes that might help tie this together? Any info/examples or help is much appreciated.

• Automatic Maintenance Jobs in every PDB? New SPM Evolve Advisor Task in Oracle 12.1.0.2

  A customer checking out our slides from the OTN Tour in August 2014 asked me a finicky question the other day: "According to the documentation the Automatic SQL Tuning Advisor maintenance task gets executed only within the CDB$ROOT, but not within each PDB - but the slides are not clear here. So what is the truth?" Ok, that's good question. In my understanding all tasks will get executed within each PDB - that's why we recommend (based on experience) to break up the default maintenance windows when using Oracle Multitenant. Otherwise all PDBs will have the same maintenance windows, and guess what will happen when 25 PDBs start gathering object statistics at the same time ... The documentation indeed says: Automatic SQL Tuning Advisor data is stored in the root. It might have results about SQL statements executed in a PDB that were analyzed by the advisor, but these results are not included if the PDB is unplugged. A common user whose current container is the root can run SQL Tuning Advisor manually for SQL statements from any PDB. When a statement is tuned, it is tuned in any container that runs the statement. This sounds reasonable. But when we have a look into our PDBs or into the CDB_AUTOTASK_CLIENT view the result is different from what the doc says. I haven't verified the reason why this is different from the docs but it may have been related to one change in Oracle Database 12.1.0.2: The new SPM Evolve Advisor Task ( SYS_AUTO_SPM_EVOLVE_TASK) for automatic plan evolution for SQL Plan Management. This new task doesn't appear as a stand-alone job (client) in the maintenance window but runs as a sub-entity of the Automatic SQL Tuning Advisor task. • Is there a good tutorial/book for creating a quiz app for iOS 5? [closed]

  I am new to iOS development and looking to create a quiz application which will be for ipad, iphone and itouch. It will ask a question, text based, and have four possible answers. After you select an answer, the system tells you if you are right or wrong and provides an explanation. It provides the percentage of correct answers. I'm not sure how to go about creating this and wondered if anybody has read a book, seen a tutorial or could offer any advice that would explain this process? Thanks in advance for all of your help!

• How can I generate signed distance fields (2D) in real time, fast?

  In a previous question, it was suggested that signed distance fields can be precomputed, loaded at runtime and then used from there. For reasons I will explain at the end of this question (for people interested), I need to create the distance fields in real time. There are some papers out there for different methods which are supposed to be viable in real-time environments, such as methods for Chamfer distance transforms and Voronoi diagram-approximation based transforms (as suggested in this presentation by the Pixeljunk Shooter dev guy), but I (and thus can be assumed a lot of other people) have a very hard time actually putting them to use, since they're usually long, largely bloated with math and not very algorithmic in their explanation. What algorithm would you suggest for creating the distance fields in real-time (favourably on the GPU) especially considering the resulting quality of the distance fields? Since I'm looking for an actual explanation/tutorial as opposed to a link to just another paper or slide, this question will receive a bounty once it's eligible for one :-). • Ubuntu 12.04 on Lenovo ThinkPad with UEFI

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop amd64 on my Lenovo ThinkPad E330. There were no problem during installation. Now I can boot to Ubuntu and use it. BUT: now there is only one option in Boot Devices in my ThinkPad's BIOS: ubuntu I can boot ThinkPad to Ubuntu on HDD ONLY - no other options. I switched BIOS to "Legacy devices only" - this did not help :( Could you, please, help me and explain how to boot my ThinkPad from USB drive? How can I switch back to Legacy devices and use MBR, not UEFI? Thank you!

  I am totally impressed about the Nokia City Lens application. How does the Nokia Lumia City Lens app work? Nokia Lumia City Lens app detects shops, restaurants, etc. by scanning the visual environment. But how can it detect shops or anything by only scanning visual information? Because we need a 360 degree view to detect a location. Because we can't simply match visual information and get that data. The visuals will change proportionally with distance and angle. So how does this app match the location and retrieve the information? Can anyone explain the concept What technology or algorithm is used in this app?

• Alternative to Google Adsense which has good international coverage

  I have a technical blog (programming related) which has around 500 visit per days, 70% are international visitors and 30% are from US/CA. Google Adsense disabled my account due to invalid clicks so I can't use them (no need to explain here, they suck hard and never respect and listen to the publishers' appeal) I have tried adbrite and recently using chitika but they almost give me nothing, e.g. chitika 13,865 Page Views 4 clicks $0.01 The performance is so poor even I don't want to mention about it. I am already putting a full top banner and a 350x200 box in article body. I am researching if any alternative would provide more revenue for my internation visitors or technical visitors. Thanks.

• Does having a Google "stop word" in a domain name have less SEO benefit than not having it?

  Let me explain. Let's say my keyword I want to optimize is "green giraffes". But the domain greengiraffes.com (singular, plural, no hyphen, hyphen, etc.) is not available. I know that the search results for "green giraffes" and "about green giraffes" are essentially the same because "about" is a "stop word". Does that therefore also mean that the domain name "aboutgreengiraffes.com" is as good as "greengiraffes.com" in terms of SEO value? Are all stop words equal in that regard, or a shorter one (such as "e" or "z") is better?

  I'm in the process of trying to introduce Version/Revision Control to a team of developers who have never used it. I'll be giving a presentation that I hope will be a persuasive explanation of the importance of Version Control -- the benefits of using it and the liabilities of avoiding it. I'd like to kick it off with an amusing but instructive list modelled after the "redneck" line of jokes. Can anyone help me add to this list? "You know you're a Version Control Avoider if..." You have a bunch of files or folders with names like Engine_05212012_works_old[2].cpp You've had to explain to your boss how you accidentally overwrote production code. I don't consider myself terribly witty, but I think a little humor could be helpful in this situation. Any ideas for how to extend this list? [Bonus points if you can suggest a better moniker than "Version Control Avoider"]

• Better control on code updates

  I will briefly explain my situation. I have a website in PHP, this website is powered by a custom framework + some "plug-in" made ad hoc for it. I am the only developer of this. Until now I just test locally any changes than I upload the php files via FTP. I don't feel confortable anymore with this. The code base has grown quite a lot and I need some sort of system that helps to keep track of changes (line by line) and can restore to an old version easly if something goes wrong. Are there any good solution for this? • Service Layer - how broad should it be, and should it also be on the local application?

  Background: I need to build a desktop application with some operations (CRUD and more) (=winforms), I need to make another application which will re-use some of the functions of the main application (=webforms). I understood that using service layer is the best approach here. If I understood correctly the service should be calling the function on the BL layer (correct me if I'm wrong) The dilemma: In my main winform UI - should I call the functions from the BL, or from the service? (please explain why) Should I create a service for every single function on the BL even if I need some of the functions only in one UI? for example - should I create services for all the CRUD operations, even though I need to re-use only update operation in the webform? Now is the time now to branch things off as discussed in the article; http://drilian.com/2009/02/25/lightning-bolts/ Again however i am confused as to the meaning of the following pseudo code; splitEnd = Rotate(direction, randomSmallAngle)*lengthScale + midPoint; I'm unsure how to actually rotate this correctly. In all honesty i'm abit unsure what to-do completely at this part, "splitEnd" will be a Vector3, so whatever happens in the rotate function must then return some form of directional rotation which is then * by a scale to create length and then added to the midPoint. I'm not sure. If someone could explain what i'm meant to be doing in this part that would be really grateful.

  I'm trying to understand the tutorial 16 at http://ogldev.atspace.co.uk, which requires the image processing library ImageMagick. But when I run the tutorial, I encountered an following error: freeglut: failed to change scree settings Error loading textures 'test.png': no decode delegates for this image format 'C:/../appdata/magick-6024a_cIJcw90t-j'@error/constitute.c/ReadImage/552 I searched for google and found that my ImageMagick library do not have PNG Delegaes, but when I checked for the information of ImageMagick, it sees PNG in its delegate lists. Command line: convert -configure Result: LIB_VERSION 0x687 DELEGATES: bzlib, freetype, jpeg, jp2, lcms, png, tiff, x11, xml, wmf, zlib Could you explain to me this error, thanks so much!

  When learning about polymorphism you commonly see something like this class Base { int prv_member; virtual void fn(){} } class Derived : Base { int more_data; virtual void fn(){} } What is upcasting or downcasting? Is (Derived*)base_ptr; an upcast or downcast? I call it upcast because you are going away from the base into something more specific. Other people told me it is a downcast because you are going down a hierarchy into something specific with the top being the root. But other people seem to call it what i call it. When converting a base ptr to a derived ptr is it called upcasting or downcasting? and if someone can link to an official source or explain why its called that than great.

  Recently, I read that Facebook ads are moving towards retargeting and got interested deeper into subject. Essentially, retargeting is technique advertisers use that tracks purchase intent by putting cookies into your browser and when you visit another website within ad network you will see ad for item you "wanted to buy". In order this to for, both publisher and advertiser need to work together. Publisher needs add couple of lines of javascript and publisher need to be able to read this info across sites. In most cases, javascript inserts iframe from adnetwork domain. Iframe script sets cookies for both host domain and remote adnetwork domain. However, Same Origin policy do not let iframes read/set content from parent domain. Is there something I'm missing here? Can someone explain how this technique actually works?

I tried to explain that there is no equivalent Java EE 6 Programmer examination, but a number of different exams, such as Web Services, Web Components, and Enterprise JavaBeans. Is there a recommended path to follow for the various Oracle certifications in the Enterprise Edition of Java? Is it logical to take some exams prior to taking others because the content builds upon previous knowledge or are they all independent?

• Sensor based vs. AABB based collision

  I'm trying to write a simple collision system, which will probably be primarily used for 2D platformers, and I've been planning out an AABB system for a few weeks now, which will work seamlessly with my grid data structure optimization. I picked AABB because I want a simple system, but I also want it to be perfect. Now, I've been hearing a lot lately about a different method to handle collision, using sensors, which are placed in the important parts of the entity. I understand it's a good way to handle slopes, better than AABB collision. The thing is, I can't find a basic explanation of how it works, let alone a comparison of it and the AABB method. If someone could explain it to me, or point me to a good tutorial, I'd very much appreciate it, and also a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of the two techniques would be nice.

• How do I get VirtualBox to work?

  I can't seem to make VirtualBox to work, I've installed it and reinstalled by 3 ways: Terminal, Ubuntu Software Center and VirtualBox's official web site installation and I keep getting the same kernel error. I found a "solution" to this problem by typing in terminal: sudo apt-get install virtualbox-dkms But it tells my that "virtualbox-dkms is already the newest version". Then I typed in terminal what the error tells me: sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup but then I tells me that DKMS is actually NOT installed (which is a contradiction). If anyone has encountered the same problem and actually solved it please tell me and explain me step by step 'cause I'm new to Linux.

• Is there a purpose for using pull requests on my own repo if I am the only developper?

  So I got started with a real project of mine on GitHub and things are going pretty well and ideas are flowing a lot faster than I initially thought. In order to keep things organized, I setup some branches so I can develop different features separatly. Now when I push my branch to GitHub, I have that section where I have two buttons : Pull Request and Compare with the name of the branch I recently pushed to. I understand the purpose of the Compare button but I don't get why I would want to create a pull request on my own repo. Can someone explain me why I would do that? Is it useful to make pull request on my own repo if I am the only developper?

  I happened to use `netstat' program this morning.. And what I couldn't understand its results. [1] I don't understand why `canonical' servers are connected with my computer even if I am not currently using anything that I would expect such a connection to exist. [2] Second, I don't see the PID/Program name of the Program which has made this connection. I would at-least expect a PID.

• What modelling technique do you use for your continuous design?

  Together with my teammates, I'm trying to self-learn XP and apply its principles. We're successfully working in TDD and happily refactoring our code and design. However we're having problems with the overall view of the design of the project. Lately we were wondering what would be the "good" practices for an effective continuous design of the code. We're not strictly seeking the right model, like CRC cards, communication diagrams, etc., instead we're looking for a technique to constantly collaborate on the high level view of the system (not too high though). I'll try to explain myself better: I'm actually interested in the way CRC cards are used to brainstorm a model and I would mix them with some very rough UML diagrams (that we already use). However, what we're looking for are some principles for deciding when, how and how much to model during our iterations. Have you any suggestion on this matter? For example, when your teammates and you know you need a design session and how your meetings work?
