• Drupal: does removing these lines from .htaccess cause security issues ?

  hi, I had to comment these lines from the htaccess files in my main Drupal folder and in sites folder # Don't show directory listings for URLs which map to a directory. #Options -Indexes # Follow symbolic links in this directory. #Options +FollowSymLinks ...in order to not get a 500 Internal Error on the new server. Can I leave them uncommented or am I going to have security issues ? ps. I've also set all content in files folder 777 permission. Is this ok ? thanks

• Socket.io Duplicate clients on a namespace

  Hi I'm trying to use dynamic namespace to create them on demand.   I have an Email body that used to be plain text, but now I've made it HTML. The emails are generated using a number of methods and none of them are easy to convert. What I have is: Some content [email protected], some http://www.somewebsite/someurl.aspx. What I'd like to do is create a function that automatically encloses all email addresses and all URLs within a string in HREF tags so that the HTML email reads properly in all email clients. Does anyone have a function for this?

  In my urls.py I have this: (r'^myapp/$', 'myapp.views.views.index'), (r'^myapp/login/$', 'myapp.views.views.login_user'), In my settings.py I have this: LOGIN_URL = '/myapp/login' In my views.py I have this: @login_required((login_url='/myapp/login/') def index(request): return render_to_response('index.html') def login_user(request): #login stuff return render(request, 'registration/login.html', {'state':state, 'username': username}) I can go to mysite.com/myapp/login and the login page works. However, when I go to mysite.com/myapp/index I do not get redirected to the login page even though I am logged out. Why is that and how do I fix it?

• How do I create a no-javascript url hash handler for my website?

  Ok, I'm not sure how this is normally done. But I've got a script that basically empties a div of content and then loads content from a div from a separate webpage, without reloading the current page. This works great. It's taken from this example actually, from net tuts (great site btw) http://nettuts.s3.amazonaws.com/011_jQuerySite/sample/index.html And the guy who wrote this even though about handling the url's since the url don't change when using his method. So he wrote a javascript snippet that looks up the url and loads the content accoringly. Which is not working btw. But I was thinking about people who don't have javascript enabled, or iPhone and iPad users ;) Copying URLs and sending to a friend won't work at all. So how is this typically done? And can it be done without javascript? Possibly by php?

  Is there a way to test the url you're entering in a step, to see if Google Analytics will recognize it? What I'd like to do is provide some web page or some web service with a URL, and get a pass or fail. It passes if Google Analytics recognizes a page hit to the url. Let me give some context. We've been having issues with our goal funnel steps in Google Analytics. The instructions on adding steps say not to use the domain. e.g. DO NOT use : http://www.mysite.com/step1.html INSTEAD use: /step1.html Our custom CRM uses friendly urls and as a result GA is having a hard time picking up on them. So we've experimented with changing around url we've placed in the step, however we've got to wait a day to see if the new url we've provided is going to work! Hence why we're looking for something quicker.

• File upload with tdo-miniforms not working

  I am using the TDO-miniforms plugin for wordpress. I have a form set up that lets the user submit files. The files are successfully uploaded to the tmp-folder, but once the post is created they are not copied into the allocated post folder. The only thing that is created in the folder with a post id is a file called array. It seems like the file holds the binary data of the uploaded files. The “correct” urls are appended to the post content I am running wordpress 2.9.2 on snow leopard using Mamp.

I have read svnbook and other sites and found file:/// access method is being used to checkout as svn checkout file:///var/svn/repos/myproject/trunk myproject ( ref:svnbook) I am little confused! • Finding all the URL requests from a firefox extension

  I am building a firefox extension. In this extension, I want to see the URLs of any new webpage that the user visits. The webpage can be in a different tab or window than the current tab that the user is viewing (this should also catch the URL of pop-ups). Is there a way to find when firefox makes a GET or POST request and grab the URL? An alternative that I am trying to avoid is going through all the tabs and manually check to see if they have loaded a new page. Thanks

• nginx - how do I get rewrite directives to execute before index directives?

  I'm trying a simple internal rewrite with nginx to navigate to a sub-directory depending on the user_agent -- mobile browsers go to /mobile, otherwise they go to /www however it seems that when I rewrite these urls, the index directive is processed before the rewrites, so I end up getting 403 forbidden. # TEST FOR INDEX index index.php # TEST PHONES if ($http_user_agent ~* '(iPhone|iPod)') { rewrite ^(.*)$ /mobile$1 break; } # OTHERWISE WE ARE DONE rewrite ^(.*)$ /www$1 break; when I turn off the re-writes and hit the hostname (http://www.somehost.com/) the index is displayed correctly. When they are on, I have to explicitly navigate to somehost.com/index.php to get the script to run ... Do I have to explicity test for directories, and then re-write to an index.php file, or is there a simpler solution?

• Downloading image from server without file extension (NSData to UIImage)

  From my server I'm pulling down a url that is supposed to simply be a profile image. The relevant code for pulling down the image from the urls is this: NSString *urlString = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@%@",kBaseURL,profile_image_url]; profilePic = [UIImage imageWithData:[NSData dataWithContentsOfURL:[NSURL URLWithString:urlString]]]; My url is in the format (note no file extension on the end since its dynamically rendered) localhost:8000/people/1/profile_image If I load the url in my browser the image displays; however the code above for pulling down the UIImage does not work. I've verified that the code does pull an image from a random site on the interwebs. Any thoughts on why this is happening?

  Hello. What I'm trying to do: have pretty URLs in the format 'http://domain.tld/one/two/three', that get handled by a PHP script (index.php) by looking at the REQUEST_URI server variable. In my example, the REQUEST_URI would be '/one/two/three'. (Btw., is this a good idea in general?) I'm using Apache's mod_rewrite to achieve that. Here's the RewriteRule I use in my .htaccess: RewriteRule ^/?([a-zA-Z/]+)/?$ /index.php [NC,L] This works really well thus far; it forwards every REQUEST_URI that consists of a-z, A-Z or a '/' to /index.php, where it is processed. Only drawback: '?' (question marks) and '#' (hash keys) seem to still be allowed in the REQUEST_URI, maybe even more characters that I've yet to find. Is it possible to restrict those via my .htaccess and an adequate addition to the RewriteRule? Thanks!

• Efficient implementation of exclusive execution

  I have an ObjectManager class that is used to process payments. It is wrapped over the Order entities, so new instance has to be created when processing is required. I need to prevent the situation when several ObjectManager instances are dealing with the same order simultaneously (it happend once because of some errors on the remote payment processing center, somehow they called our callback urls twice). I'd love to get an advice how to implement it more efficiently.   I'm trying to make an url that adds a / to all hrefs and srcs in a string. It should only add a / to urls that don't have a http:// at their beginning and that don't have / yet also. If we have this: <a href="ABC">... <img src="DEFG">... <a href="/HIJ">... <a href="http://KLMN">... The results should be something like this: <a href="/ABC">... <img src="/DEFG">... <a href="/HIJ">... <a href="http://KLMN">... This is what i've come up till now: &(href|src)="?!(\/|http::\/\/)(.+)" And the replace would be $1="/$2" It isn't working, though. What am I doing wrong?   A cool feature in Windows 7 Media Center is the ability to listen to local FM radio. But what if you don’t have a tuner card that supports a connected radio antenna? The RadioTime plugin solves the problem by allowing access to thousands of online radio stations. With the RadioTime plugin for Windows Media Center, you’ll have access to over 100,000 online radio stations from around the world. Their guide is broken down into different categories such as Talk Radio, Music Radio, Sports Radio and more. It’s completely free, but does require registration to save preset stations. RadioTime It works with Media Center in XP, Vista, and Windows 7 (which we’re demonstrating here). When installing it for Windows 7, make sure to click the Installer link below the “Get It Now – Free” button as the installer works best for the new OS. Installation is extremely quick and easy… Now when you open Windows 7 Media Center you’ll find it located in the Extras category from the main menu. After you launch it, you’re presented with the RadioTime guide where you can browse through the different categories of stations. Your shown various station suggestions each time you start it up. The main categories are broken down further so you can find the right genre of the music your looking for.   World Radio offers you stations from all over the world categorized into different regions. RadioTime does support local stations via an FM tuner, but if you don’t have one, you can still access local stations provided they broadcast online. One thing about listening to your local stations online is the audio quality may not be as good as if you had a tuner connected. It provides information on most of the online stations. For example here we look at Minnesota Public Radio info and you get a schedule of when certain programs are on. Then get even more information about the topics on the shows. To use the Presets option you’ll need to log into your RadioTime account, or if you don’t have one just click on the link to create a free one.   Creating a free account is simple and basic on their site. You aren’t required to have an account to use the RadioTime plugin, it’s only if you want the additional benefits. Conclusion For this article we only tried it with Windows 7 Media Center, and sometimes the interface felt clunky when moving quickly through menus. Also, there isn’t a search feature from within Media Center, however, you can search stations from their site and add them to your presets. Despite a few shortcomings, this is a very cool way to get access to thousands of online radio stations through Windows Media Center. If you’re looking for a way to access thousands of radio stations through WMC, you might want to give RadioTime a try. • Convert YouTube Videos to MP3 with YouTube Downloader

Conversion was successful! The MP3 you converted will be in the same directory you downloaded the video to. Now you’re ready to listen to your MP3 or import it to your Zune, iTunes, or music library. • Easily Add Facebook Chat to Pidgin

  Want to keep in touch with your Facebook friends throughout the day?  Here we’ll show you how to easily add Facebook chat to the popular multi-protocol chat client Pidgin. Facebook has recently added support for XMPP chat, which means you can easily add it to popular chat clients such as Pidgin.  Previously you could only add Facebook chat to Pidgin through a plug-in that didn’t always work correctly.  Here we’ll walk you through setting up your Facebook account in Pidgin. Getting Started First, make sure you have a username for your Facebook account (link below).  This is a relatively new feature for Facebook, so if you’ve had your account for a while you may need to choose one.    If you already have one, you should see it listed instead. Now, open Pidgin, and click Manage Accounts. Click Add… Then select XMPP from the Protocol list. Now, enter your Facebook username without the facebook.com part (e.g your.facebook.username, not http://www.facebook.com/your.user.name).  Then, enter chat.facebook.com for the Domain, and enter your standard Facebook password.  You can check the “Remember password” box if you’d like Pidgin to automatically sign in to Facebook chat. Now, click on the Advanced tab, and uncheck the “Require SSL/TLS” box.  Also, make sure the Connect port is 5222.  Click Add, and your Facebook account is added to Pidgin. Now Facebook will show up in your list of accounts, with the username [email protected]. Your Facebook friends will show up directly in your Buddy list, complete with their full name and Facebook profile picture.  Any users that are not in a group will show under your standard list, while ones in a Facebook group will be shown in a separate group.  You can move which groups your Facebook friends show up in, just like you can with other chat contacts.   And no matter if your friend is logged in on the standard Facebook website or through another chat application, it will work the same as always.   This is a great way to keep in touch with your Facebook friends throughout the day.  If you like Facebook chat and already use Pidgin, now you can keep from switching between programs and just chat with all your friends from a central location. • View Mobile Websites in Windows with Safari 4 Developer Tools

  Want to try out mobile websites designed for the iPhone and other mobile devices on your PC?  Safari 4 for Windows lets you do this easily with their developer tools. By default, Safari will show standard desktop websites.  But by making a simple change, you can switch it to work like Safari Mobile on the iPhone or iPod Touch. Getting Started First make sure you have Safari 4 for Windows installed.  You can download Safari directly (link below) and install it as usual.   Or if you already have another Apple program installed, such as QuickTime or iTunes, then you can install it from Apple Software update.  Simply enter apple software update in the Start menu search box. And then select Safari 4 from the list of new software available.  Click Install to automatically download and install Safari. Accept the license Agreement, and then Safari will automatically install. Once this is finished, Safari will be ready to use. View Mobile Sites in Safari First, we need to enable the developer tools.  Click the gear icon on the toolbar, and select Preferences. Click the Advanced tab, and then check the box that says “Show Develop menu in menu bar”. Once you’ve closed your settings box, click the page icon, select Develop, then User Agent, and then choose one of the Mobile Safari settings.  In our test we chose Mobile Safari 3.1.2 – iPhone. To make your browser emulate a mobile device better, you can hide the bookmarks and tab bar to have a more streamlined interface. Click the Gear icon, and select “Hide Bookmarks Bar”, and then repeat and click “Hide Tab Bar”. You can also shrink your window to be closer to the size of a mobile device screen.  Once you’ve done these things, Safari should look similar to this screenshot.  Here we have loaded Google.com, and you can see it in its iPhone-style interface. Simply enter any website into the address bar, and it will load in its mobile interface if it has one.  Here is Google’s other mobile offerings, right inside Windows. Gmail loads messages with the default iPhone interface. One especially interesting mobile site is Apple’s online iPhone User Guide.  When loaded in Safari with the iPhone setting, it loads with a very nice mobile UI that works just like an iPhone app.  In fact, you can even click and drag to scroll, just like you would with your finger on an iPhone. Conclusion Even if you do not have a Smartphone, you can still preview what websites will look like on them with this trick. Not all sites will work of course, but it’s fun to play around with different sites that have mobile versions. Before For our example we chose a great extension that unfortunately has not been updated yet. As you can see here Firefox is refusing to let the extension install. After As soon as you install Add-on Compatibility Reporter you will be presented with an information page on how the extension works and what you can do with it. You should definitely take a moment to read this as it is very helpful. After trying our non-compatible extension again we were able to proceed with the install process. Notice at the bottom that “compatibility checking” has been overridden. Success! As soon as we restarted our browser it was easy to see the “non-compatible icon” in the “Add-ons Manager Window”…but the extension did install though (terrific!). Clicking on the extension’s entry will reveal a new button in the lower right corner. Using the “Compatibility Drop-Down Menu” you can report if the extension is working as well as before or if it is actually having problems. The extension that we used for our example had no problems whatsoever so good news there. Whichever option you choose you will be presented with a small “Report Window” with information about the extension, your browser’s version number, and your operating system. Click “Submit Report” to send it on its’ way. You will see a confirmation message letting you know that your report was successfully submitted. While the extension itself has not been altered in any form at least you have it working again and have helped verify whether it still works well or not. Notice the “notation” present now in place of the “Compatibility Button” that lets you know that you have already taken care of that particular extension. Looking great… Conclusion If you have a favorite extension that you miss using in the newest release of Firefox then this is definitely an extension to add to your browser. Not only will your extension start working again but you can let Mozilla know how well it is working and (hopefully) help get the extension updated. • PHP and Ruby: how to leverage both? and, is it worth it?

  As you might have noticed from the title, this is not a "PHP or Ruby", or a "PHP vs. Ruby" question. This is a question on how to leverage PHP + Ruby in the same business. I myself am a PHP developer, I love the language because of its convenience and I specially love the ecosystem of resources that surround it: Joomla, Drupal, Wordpress, Symfony2, Doctrine2, etc. However, the language itself can be a little disappointing sometimes. OTOH, Ruby looks like a very beautiful language and —from studying it superficially in several aspects— I could say it is leaner than Python as a language per se. However, from what I've seen there is pretty much only RoR making noise, and I don't like RoR so much (mainly because its model layer). As Co-CEO and CTO at my company I'm trying to think outside of the box since I want to start to focus on the human side of technology and see if its sane to use both PHP and Ruby. Here are some random thoughts: Ruby folk seem to be generally better suited programmers than PHP folk (in terms of averages), I know the previous statement is somewhat baloney because very good and well architected PHP can be written, but I'd say the Ruby programmer culture is better than PHP's. The thing about Ruby is that it seems better suited for rapid development, I don't really know if this is only the case for RoR, but I do know that there are certain practices (perhaps not so good) like monkey patching that let business needs be satified quicker. From a marketing point of view (yep, sometimes you need to leverage the marketing BS for the sake of your company) Ruby seems better while PHP carries some stigmas. PHP 5.4 is bringing traits, and that is better/cleaner than mixins. That could really make PHP as lean as Ruby —or more— for certain stuff. Now, concretely, my questions: Would a PHP programmer want to learn Ruby?, I know I do, but conversely, would a Ruby programmer want to learn PHP?. What kinds of projects or situations would be better suited for Ruby that are not suited for PHP?. What is the actual ecosystem of Ruby?, aside from RoR, I have not seen other hyped technologies/frameworks (I've seen RSpec, but I confess being a total noob on what BDD really consists of and its implications). Supposing there are a certain type of projects ideal for Ruby, would there be a moment that its better to move it to PHP?. I know PHP can handle lots of stuff, but I've read that Ruby has its limitations when scaling (or is that RoR?, or is that baloney for both?). Finally and most importantly, would it be sane to maintain projects in two languages?, or is that just stupid. As I said, it looks like Ruby is leaner on the short term and that can make a project happen and succeed, but I'm not so sure about that on the long run. I'm looking for insights mainly from people that know well the strengths and weaknesses of the languages —preferably both of them— and Ruby's ecosystem in real practice, meaning: frameworks and applications like the ones I quoted from PHP's ecosystem.
