• Changes to grub in ubuntu 10

  I've been running CentOS 5 for some years. I've decided to upgrade to Ubuntu, and with 10.04 just out, this seemed like a good time. I'm a tad paranoid, so I started off with a new set of drives - one to install on, one to backup to, and one as a spare. I removed my existing CentOS 5 drives, and did an install, and had no problems. I installed the server version, and used the default full-disk LVM installation. Next, I copies my backup scripts over, edited them to work with the new configuration, and did a test backup. That worked fine, as well. Then comes the real test, could I do an install of the backup onto the spare drive? (I won't put anything of importance on a system that doesn't have a reliable backup, and if I've never done a restore, it's not reliable.) I booted from a System Rescue CD (ver 1.5.3), with the spare drive as /dev/sda, and the backup drive as /dev/sdb. I had no trouble in partitioning, configuring LVM, formatting, making swap, or restoring the file systems. But when I got to restoring grub to the MBR, I ran into problems. My restore instructions from CentOS 5 said run grub, then enter two commands: root (hd0,0) setup (hd0) The first command exits with an error: "Checking if /boot/grub/stage1 exists ... no" I did some googling around, and found that the Grub2 included in recent Ubuntus is very different than the Grub 0.97 included in CentOS 5. One site suggested I use: grub-install --root-dir=/mnt/restore /dev/sda That appeared to work, but when I booted from the drive, I ended up at a grub prompt. Any ideas as to what I need to do? It seems like a simple problem, but my attempts at searching out answers on the web are being swamped by references to the old version of Grub. Help would be appreciated.

• Backing up Excel Files to a different Directory

  In Excel 2007 in the Save As box there is an option to 'Create a Backup' which simply backs up the file whenever it is saved. Unfortunately it backs up the file to the same directory as the original. Is there a simple way to change this directory to another drive / folder? I know the path is correct, I also know that the file is not open anywhere else. The workbook has the same name as the one I'm trying to save over but it should just overwrite. The backup consists of 3 scripts, the first will create the shadow copies and expose them, the second uses robocopy to copy them to a remote location and the third unexposes the shadow copies again. The first script – the one that runs correctly but fails to do what it's supposed to: # DiskShadow script file to backup VM from a Hyper-V host # First, delete any shadow copies of the drives. System Drives needs to be included. Delete Shadows volume C: Delete Shadows volume D: Delete Shadows volume E: #Ensure that shadow copies will persist after DiskShadow has run set context persistent # make sure the path already exists set verbose on begin backup add volume D: alias VirtualDisk add volume C: alias SystemDrive # verify the "Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer" writer will be included in the snapshot # NOTE: The writer GUID is exclusive for this install/machine, must be changed on other machines! writer verify {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de} create end backup # Backup is exposed as drive X: make sure your drive letter X is not in use Expose %VirtualDisk% X: Exit The next is just a robocopy and then an unexpose. Now, when I run the above script, I get no errors from it, except that the "BITS" writer has been excluded because none of its components are included. That's okay because I really only need the Hyper-V writer. Also I double checked the GUID for the writer, it's correct. During the time when the Hyper-V writer becomes active, 2 things will happen on the guest machines: The Debian/Linux machine will go to a saved state and restore when done, all fine. The Windows guests will "creating vss snapshop-sets" or something similar. Then X: gets exposed and I can copy the .vhd files over. The problem is, for some reason, the VHD files I get over seems to be old copies, they miss files, users and updates that are on the actual machines. I also tried putting the machines in a saved sate manually, didn't change the outcome. I hope someone here has an idea of how to solve this.

EDIT 2: After a long break from this problem, I've just run a few tests again and found out that, although my macbuntu still fails to connect to my home wi-fi network, it works just fine at my university... Does that help in anyway? My home network is managed by a dual-band (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz) 802.11n cisco e4200 wi-fi router.

• Ubuntu Raring on iMac 2008; graphics update ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro broke my Raring this morning!

  Was working on my iMac(2008) 20,5" this morning when again some GLX etc updates appeared! As usual I let the update-installer do it's job; when finished updating, my screen got scrambled; I can not work anymore as the screen shivers, shakes and graphics is one big mess. Ctrl+Alt+F1 does not work either as most of the time my screen is black completely! When booting into OSX 10.8.5 (Raring dual boot with OSX 10.8.5), OSX graphics works flawlessly! Can anybody indicate me which ATI Radeon drivers I can download which repairs the 'malversation' of this mornings updates? I guess I will have to startup with some rescue boot disk (Knoppix?) to do manipulations… As I'm still a noob as well I need clear explanations (please). Raring worked perfectly in dual boot on my iMac until this mornings updates! Needles to say the 'final resort' is restarting (re)installation of Ubuntu Raring, but want to attempt to rescue my present 13.04. Thank you! Kind regards, Gaytan!

• Is there a way to backup everything in an app-engine blobstore?

  bulkloader.py is very handy. But as far as I can tell it doesn't appear to fetch items from the blobstore, so you can be left with broken entity relationships if you needed to dump/restore your application. Does anyone know a method for completely backing up their data from app-engine including blobstore data?

• Accidentally deleted /opt/local/bin without backup. Any help?

  Hi all, I'm on a Mac OS X 10.5.8 I was recently uninstalling mysql5 from /opt/local/bin. I typed: rm -rf /opt/local/bin mysql* instead of rm -rf /opt/local/bin/mysql* This deleted my entire /opt/local/bin directory which puts me in a bit of a bind. Is there any way to recover these files? If not, I have a friend that is using a similar set of programs, would it be possible to use the contents of his folder? If I end up needing to re-install everything in this folder, what is the best way to go about doing this? Thanks in advance!

Whats the point in this question? The idea while not perfect is catch the most commonly asked questions regarding redirects using the htaccess on the Apache platform either on some type of lamp or a live server.   Several people have got a single domain name server.company.com server, where they are now supposed to host their infrastructure or temporal projects, written in different ways even in different programming languages. How do they divide the domain? Split into subdomains: john.server.company.com, kate.server.company.com, etc. This would need a lot of admins' assistance, time, etc. -- there would be no way for John and Kate to do it themselves. Split into url namespaces: server.company.com/john/, server.company.com/kate/, etc. Pro: They now can make a single welcome page at root with any additional info (if they need?) Con: Each server would need to know their namespace string constant, and hrefs like / whould need patching. Split into ports: server.company.com:8080, server.company.com:8081, etc. and make a single :80 welcome page. Pro: They still can make a single welcome page at :80 Con: ??? I would like to know more pros and cons for 2 and 3 solution.

  Hello, I am trying to develop UI in C# .NET to synchronize 7 instances of backup databases with the central database one by one (All holding same schema) .The backup database( all 7 instances client databases) which is brought to the central server in a removable device such pendrive will consist of mdf and ldf files from each client and will be attached to the server where the central database resides. After all the client backup databases are attached i need to synchronize(update existing data or insert new data to the central database residing in server) each backup database one by one to central database. I want to know as how i can synchronize betweeen a backup database with a central database using C# .NET

  fired up my Minecraft server again after about a year off. My server used to run 11.04, which has since been upgraded to 12.04; I lost my management scripts in the upgrade (thought I'd backed up the user's home directory), but whatever, I enjoy developing stuff like that anyways. However, this time around, I'm running into issues. I start the Minecraft server using a detached screen, however the script is unable to 'stuff' commands into the screen instance until I attach to the screen then detach again? Once I do that, I can stuff anything I want into the server's terminal using the -X option, until I stop/start the server again, then I have to reattach and detach in order to restore functionality? • When configuring daily backups, which files should I include to be sure I have the MySQL db's

  I have a dedicated LAMP server with cpanel hosting 100 websites (some of them have MySQL db's). I am currently using the Jungle Disk Server Edition to backup our files from our LAMP server to Amazon S3. Once a week were are backing up the entire cpanel which is an enormous strain on resources but that is a separate issue. Now, what I want to do is to set up a daily job to backup just the HTML files and the MySQL db's. If I just backup the "public_html" folder will my MySQL database info be stored in that directory? Would backing up the public_html folder be enough to recover the db? I can find plenty of resources online about how to manually backup MySQL db's but with a 100 sites, I need it automated. I'm hoping for an easy solution where I can just grab a folder to backup each day.

I want to limit my access to some data and what I want is that I should be able to access the data only on certain days of the month (e.g., every 3rd day). Is there any way like encryption or some utility to allow me to only access data on specific days? One idea that I was thinking of was to encrypt the data and store the password (will be complex and long so that I couldn't remember it right away) on some website which would then email me back the password in future on those specific days.

• Does the combo of PHP5, MySQL, and a Macbook Pro constitute a LAMP stack? If not, what does?

  Hello - I mostly code in Visual Studio, I like it, but lately it's making me feel a little claustrophobic. On my MacBook Pro, I've set up PHP5 and MySQL (natively). With the built-in server on the mac, does this constitute a LAMP stack? Is Mac OSX considered a Linux Environment? I have VMWare Fusion 3, should I set up a Linux OS virtually in order to implement a LAMP stack? Should I just use CakePHP or Zend? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
