• ACL tool for audit of Ubuntu production servers

  In my production environment, I have close to 10 Ubuntu 12.04 Servers and I want to get the list of users from them. I am looking for some kind of script or tool (non-gui) to get the same. Yes, I can get the list from /etc/passwd and /etc/groups files but it would be good to have a tool or script to do this due to the following reasons. I have right now 10 systems in Ubuntu and 30 systems in Windows 2003. I am recommending my organization and IT to move all the systems to Ubuntu except the one running MS SQL server We do not have good Ubuntu admins with us and they should not mess up with the system if I give some manual commands I also need to find out date of creation of user, group, password standards like strength, expiry etc Please help me as I want to automate the process and get the list on weekly basis from IT team. • Should I force users to update an application?

  I'm writing an application for a medium sized company that will be used by about 90% of our employees and our clients. In planning for the future we decided to add functionality that will verify that the version of the program that is running is a version that we still support. Currently the application will forcequit if the version is not among our supported versions. Here is my concern. Hypothetically, in version 2.0.0.1 method "A" crashes and burns in glorious fashion and method "B" works just fine. We release 2.0.0.2 to fix method A and deprecate version 0.1. Now if someone is running 0.1 to use method B they will be forced to update to fix something that isn't an issue for them right now. My question is, will the time saved not troubleshooting old, unsupported versions outweigh the cost in usability?

• Storage device manger regarding NTFS automount at boot time

  I am using storage device manager to auto-mount NTFS file system at boot time.But repeatedly, I am trying to uncheck the checkbox listed 'read only mode' in assistant option of storage device manager. I am not able to to auto-mount my NTFS partition in read/write mode. Please suggest a solution regarding this problem? Remember I am repeatedly trying to uncheck read only checkbox but not able to do that!

  There is a guy who calls himself c/c++ programmer, but what does he actually know? What knowledge about c++ does he have because there are so much to know about c/c++. So he knows the core language? He knows visual c++? He knows how to program with WIN API? He knows how to program in linux with gtk? Network programming? The real question is: What do you need to know, to be called a c/c++ programmer ,because I know c and I really do not feel like I own the power of programming... please illuminate my path.

  My friend asked me for some files that I let him take from my system. I did not see he doing that. Then I was left with a doubt: what extra files or data did he take from my system? I was thinking is here any application or method which shows what data is copied to which USB (if name available then shows name or otherwise device id) and what data is being copied to Ubuntu machine . It is some like history of USB and System data. I think this feature exists in KDE This will really useful in may ways. It provides real time and monitoring utility to monitor USB mass storage devices activities on any machine.

• how to install gerix on ubuntu 12.04 using backtrack repositories?

  I got instructions from here, and I found several sites with similar instructions but somethig is wrong with the repositories on 12.04. This should work for 11.10 and previous versions. Any ideas how to install backtrack repos and some back track apps on 12.04? I read about downloading the .deb package for gerix and manually making the same folder structure that gerix uses on backtrack, then manually run the python script, but this way didn't work for me either. How can I get gerix installed and working on my Ubuntu 12.04 system?

  I have use Ubuntu 10.04 & 12.04 but my problem is disk space, I just have 4GB of HDD! awesome considering all hardware that exists nowadays! Notebook Asus eeePC 900 with 2Gb of ram, intel inside CPU. So, which is the best OS should I use? I need one that have no problems with compatibily also that's not be so old. I've tried some of lightly versions like Puppy, slax, LPS us army OS, Precise.... BUT I don't like any of them. What do you think about Debian or Linux Mint?

• Internet TV streaming applications

  Are there any programs for Ubuntu that can pull TV streams from the Internet ? For example like on a blu-ray player you get BBC iplayer and hulu and youtube as apps, so is there an application that can do this ? I know XMBC can but its to fiddly and resource hungry, I just want the net TV apps and not the full media center. Boxee was great for this, it was a media center but had an interface for the apps not just sticking them in some strange menu like XBMC. Please let me know of anything you know of

• What is the current frequency of my processor (CPU-Z equivalent)?

  Is there a ubuntu program like CPU-Z which will show me the actual frequency of my processor? I do a fair amount of scientific computing which leads to me running my programs for up to 10 hrs. To alleviate this problem a little I overclock my CPU. However I can't see what the actual clock of my processor from within ubuntu which means I either have to restart and look at the bios or load into windows. If there was an applet or command line command to find out this information it would be very helpful. Thanks for your help

  I have a few thousand FLAC files which I would like to transcode to OGG Vorbis, but I can't find any suitable tools for the job. To name a few I have tried so far and why they are unsuitable: oggenc is single-threaded and would require me to automate it myself, mencoder requires the input to also contain video, and abcde assumes the input is a CD. The ideal tool should be multi-threaded, and support inputing multiple files located in different directories simultaneously. CLI or GUI makes no matter. Does such a tool exist?

Then one of the experts said that reading books will not make any good and that to learn, you have to solve real world problems in C#, and he gave me some problems which I previously solved in C++. The thing is that while I know the internal logic of solving the problem, I don't know how to implement it using C# efficiently. I know the message to pass but not the exact way to pass it. I did a program to solve a problem, then find out there are much easier ways of doing it wherever I was doing it in tougher way.   First, thank you in advance for any help that you can give a recent transplant from Windows to Ubuntu. I have a question that I have been seeking the answer too but I draw a blank at every turn. I design websites, free of charge, for nonprofit organizations that are just starting and do not have the resources to hire a design firm. I am in need of a flash/swf editor and compiler. I had a program that I used with the awful previous O/S, however WINE would not run the program. Thank you in advance for any help that you can offer. • USC gives "failed to download package files" message - how to fix?

  Trying to download a program (Advanced Settings aka Gnome Tweak tool) from USC and getting this error "Failed to Download Package Files: check your internet connection". Under details is info: Failed to fetch http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/n/network-manager/gir1.2-networkmanager-1.0_0.9.1.90-0ubuntu4_i386.deb 404 Not Found Question: how to fix? Note: I tried downloading another program from USC (GnuCash) and it worked fine. And my internet connect is working fine (able to surf the web, etc) and Ubuntu is fully up to date and is able to download updates. It seems to be a problem just getting the "Advanced Settings" program. (Ubuntu 11.10).

• Any patent issue if I want to call my classes "signal/slot" as in Qt?

  I need to code a signal-like mechanism and I was thinking of using the same "slot" and "signal" terms to indicate the signal and the function that needs to be called. Since this is a commercial application I'd like to know if there might be any issue with using these names, e.g. if Qt has some sort of patent on them (I searched around but couldn't find it). I believe this is a stupid question since patenting a class name would be moronic, to say the least.. but anyway... To add some detail: my code is ENTIRELY different and has NOTHING TO DO with Qt except the above. I don't use moc or any Qt class.

  I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on one of my systems and I am using Unity interface. Unity is working quite nice so far but i really miss panel applets for net speed, cpu temp, and system monitor. These applets show useful quickinfo. Unlike 10.10, there is no other way to get these infos onto the panel or unity launcher. There are solutions like screenlets and conky but they don't feel appropriate for a clean desktop look. If you know then please list out any third party indicators with links so that they can be found at one place.

So, I need a way to remove the updates that have been installed since 30th of may 12 for example (or any other date). I'm able to mount and view the digital media folders, but I'm looking for behavior more like the Mac/Windows iExplorer app that will list the /var folder as well as Applications, etc rather than just making it look like an external filesystem. I've found a few options that require jailbreak but I'd rather not go that route if it's at all possible. Thanks!

• Installing programs from a download

  Hello, my name is Anthony and I'm new to Ubuntu and any other Linux OS for that matter. My question concerns downloading a program, and then installing it. The program is called Remotedroid, it lets you use your phone as a wireless keyboard and mouse. I'm use to windows automatically starting setup upon download and cant figure out how to initiate the install in Ubuntu. The programs website says its compatible with Linux OS and the readme file says to just click the extension remotedroidserver.jar to use, but it wont work and none of the files do anything. I've unzipped all the files and my Java is all up to date as far as i know, I think. I'm just not getting how to run a setup in Ubuntu. I looked around this site for the answer but came up with nothing so if someone could maybe offer some insight I would be grateful. Thank you.
