• Images from remote source - is it possible or is it bad practice?

  I'm building a management system for websites and I had an idea related to image galleries. I'm not sure it's a good approach. Since image space needed is related to how many images a user might upload, I thought about using cloud services like DropBox, Mega, and Google Drive to store images and load then when needed. The obvious problem with this approach is that downloading the images from the 3rd party service would hamper the user experience due to the increased download times. Is there any way to save images belonging in an image gallery on remote source without hampering the user experience because of speed? Or is this approach really not a good practice?

• No idea of how to simulate car crashes

  I have a simple car game with all the basic collision detection and movement in Unity with C#. But when I was building the "engine" for the game I didn't include a detail I later decided to include. I want the possibility so that cars can get damaged and so that the model can change. For example the car looked like it was new and after a crash it looks like a wreck. Please help me by pointing to some resources or by telling me approximate ways of implementing this new feature. Thanks!

• Hover alternatve for touch devices [migrated]

  I'm building a standard infographic where you mouse over a region and the image changes as you move. For instance, imagine a map of the world, and when you mouse over a country, that country glows and a panel shows statistics about that country. The implementation is to have a separate image for the glowing country, and a div element with the statistics, and the code shows these additional elements on a hover over the country. The question is: what should this do on a tablet, where there's no hover event? What's a good alternative navigation metaphor for this kind of situation on touch-only devices?

  This is the first in a series of blog posts based around an application called Task-It that I have developed in Silverlight 4. Task-It is real-world application designed for people that need a simple way to manage the numerous tasks that we all strive to accomplish on a daily basis. Many of these applications had their strong points,but some were overly complex, some lacked key features, some cost too much money, and so forth. • How to choose a language, when taking in account the community it includes?

  I was reading the following article: Great Hackers The following part grabbed my attention: "When you choose a language, you're also choosing a community. The programmers you'll be able to hire to work on a Java project won't be as smart as the ones you could get to work on a project written in Python. And the quality of your hackers probably matters more than the language you choose. Though, frankly, the fact that good hackers prefer Python to Java should tell you something about the relative merits of those languages." I would like to apply his advice on a commercial web application I am building (I am a strong believer in culture and community), yet this article was written in 2004, and python has increased in popularity in the recent years. How can I decided a language when taking in consideration its community, rather than the popularity? Any recommendations? Is there any language community that show dedication and passion for developing, rather than learning a language to get a Job and a paycheck?

• Database structure for various items

  I'm building a sqlite database for an android app which will hold a list of items, each of which have different characteristics. Some of the characteristics are available for all objects, some are only relevant for a subset of objects. For example, all my items have a name, a description, an image. Some items will also have an expiration date, others wont. Some will have a size, some wont. Etc... How should I build my Database, as I don't know how many characteristics may be added in the future, and knowing I should be able to filter the list by any characteristic ?

• Failed i3wm install package has unment dependinces

  Tried installing i3wm from these instructions using the Ubuntu ppa http://i3wm.org/docs/repositories.html Got this error when I typed in the final command apt-get install i3 sudo apt-get install i3 Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: i3 : Depends: i3-wm (= 4.6.1-1+g4.6-88-ge99158e1) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. When I tried downloading the .deb file and running it I get an error in the software center saying "Dependency is not satisfiable: i3-wm (=4.5.1-2) Any ideas I am pretty much a noob

  I'm reluctant to ask this, as it may not pass the question requirements (not allowed to ask for suggestions?). Our company operates in a niche which hires and sells equipment. Often there is a requirement to source new goods, which would then be hired or on-sold. The industry (niche) as a whole does not really have anywhere specific online to go to find new goods. We thought about building a niche equivalent of eBay. To build a clone of eBay, would a simple classifieds script be too simple? We would need the majority of features that eBay has. Any suggestions for a web app to act as an equivalent of eBay?

• Twitter Customer Sentiment Analysis

  The breakable toy that I am currently working on is a twitter customer sentiment analyser. It scrapes twitter for tweets relating to a particular organisation, applies a machine learning algorithm to determine if the content of tweet is positive or negative, and generates reports of the sentiment data over time, correlated to dates, events and news feeds. I’m having lots of fun building this, but I would also like to learn if there is a market for quantified sentiment data. So that I can start to show people what I have in mind I have created a mockup of the simplest and most important report. It shows customer sentiment over time, with important events highlighted. As the user moves their mouse to the right (forward in time) the source data area scrolls up to display the tweets from that time. The tweets are colour coded based on sentiment rating. After I started working on this project I discovered that a team of students have already built something similar. It is a lot of fun to enter your employers name and see what it says.

• Using MLP, how to make a link to the according page in the other languages?

  Hi all, the question says it all, but here's a bit more detail: I help building a bilingual website using MLP on TextPattern. It's trivial to put a link to the top level page of another language, but how to put a link to the current page in another language? Eg. /en/contact should link to /de/kontakt (the same article in another language). I'm sure there are some variables somewhere that I could put into the template that would be filled with the correct links. Thankx in advance. :)

• Open Source License that prevents re-selling

  I have an open source project that is a add-in to TFS (ie it is for developers and those using TFS.) It is currently using the GPL. But it occurs to me that the GPL does not really represent what I am trying to do with my license. I want my code to be free to everyone who wants to use it. And if you modify it and use it then that is great too. You should not have to open source your modifications. But I would like to block someone from building my code and selling it. Or modifying it and selling it. (Anyone that wants to do that should have to negotiate a separate license with me.) Is there an open source license that prevents re-selling, but allows full non-vending use for a person/company that downloads it?

• Drop in service for account management, authentication, identity?

  I'm building an Android app and associated set of web services for uploading/downloading data. I need a basic (no frills) solution for account management (register, login, logout, verify credentials/token). What open source / third party solutions exist for this scenario? I need: create a new account db based on a salt simple web service to create a new account simple web service to authenticate supplied credentials and return some sort of token That's it, I can get by without 'fancy' email activation or password reset for the time being. Are there off-the-shelf components for this? Should I just use a 'blank' django or rails app to get this done? Seems crazy for everyone to be doing CREATE TABLE user_accounts ... Thoughts?   I'm a 3rd year Computer Science student and I would like to get started with building a game engine or at least tinkering with making one. I am curious if there are any good resources to use to get started. I get the idea behind different pieces in the engine, but I'm not really sure about how they fit together. Is there anything out there to help teach me the skeleton of a game engine? So far I've been playing with the idea of a game engine that uses modules built in a circular linked list so that each can do it's computing and then pass move to the next piece of the engine to work.

The good news is that he first part seems easy enough and CruiseControl.NET can work off Git repositories. The bad news is that according to my searches, nobody has ever tried to do this. Ideally, I'm looking for a step-by-step guide on how to set up such a development environment assuming more than one development computer, one central repository for the "master" branch, and one machine for building and packaging the binaries via CruiseControl.NET. • 3D game engines for XNA games

  Before I start development of an XNA game, I need to choose a 3D game engine to develop upon. Is this belief unfounded? Does XNA have basic object transformation, lighting and mesh/texture importing functionality by which you can develop a decent 3D side-scrolling game? Chances are I'm going to need a 3D engine such as Torque X to handle most of the special effects, animation and sound for me. What are the engines that you recommend building an XNA game with? What work reliably in your experience? Is XNA alone enough? do you have repositories of code that work directly with XNA to create effects and other game environments with sunlight, fog and rain?

• Should I give up my cushy job to be tech lead for a startup? [closed]

  I'm in my mid twenties, and I'm in a safe, comfortable job as a Software Developer. The work environment is great, I'm well paid, the benefits are good. I enjoy my job. Some friends passed my name on to some guys starting a new company. I had some informal chats with them and they liked me. They've asked me to joint their start-up as tech lead, designing and building their product from scratch. They're fully funded, and they know what they're doing. Taking the job would require giving up my safe, enjoyable, relaxed job for a risky, stressful, hard one, albeit with the potential to be really great in future. Should I take the job?
