  Possible Duplicate: What should I be focusing on when building a development PC? I am a Microsoft Developer on Sharepoint and ASP.NET. I am tring to buy a new laptop since the one that I have is an old one. From my point of view, Microsoft Development tools are becomming more and more resource-consuming (I don't find a suitable reason for it though). So I thought I would go for a Lenovo U260 i-7. • Web Host for Small Rails-based CMS site [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I am building a site for someone that uses a Rails-based content management system that I built myself. All of the Rails deployment experience I have so far has been over small intranets. I'm looking at web hosts like rackspace, because it seems like they're well-suited for Rails deployment. However, for a site that's not going to have more than a couple of hundred hits a month (if even that), I'm not sure it's necessary. I've also used Dreamhost's Phusion Passenger deployment for small projects before, but it seems barely functional and not well-supported, and I've also used Heroku for deployment, but I think a regular web host may do a little bit better, as they'll need things like Google Apps for Gmail set up. If anyone could provide some guidance on this, I'd greatly appreciate it. I get confused when I see things on rackspace like "1.5c/hour", because I'm not sure how that gets computed.

• Today is my first day in the land of backbone.js

  I am semi-excited to say that today is my first day into the land of backbone.js.  This will of course take me into many other new javascript-y areas.  As I have primarily been focused on building backend systems for the past many years…with no focus on client side bits…this will be all new ground for me.  Very exciting! I am sure that this endeavor will lead to writing about many new findings along the way.  Expect the subject of near future postings to not be related to MVC or server side code. I am starting this journey by reading through the online book “Backbone Fundamentals”.  http://addyosmani.com/blog/backbone-fundamentals/  Has anyone read this yet?  Any feed back on that title. • SQL Strings vs. Conditional SQL Statements

  Is there an advantage to piecemealing sql strings together vs conditional sql statements in SQL Server itself? I have only about 10 months of SQL experience, so I could be speaking out of pure ignorance here. Where I work, I see people building entire queries in strings and concatenating strings together depending on conditions. For example: Set @sql = 'Select column1, column2 from Table 1 ' If SomeCondtion @sql = @sql + 'where column3 = ' + @param1 else @sql = @sql + 'where column4 = ' + @param2 That's a real simple example, but what I'm seeing here is multiple joins and huge queries built from strings and then executed. Some of them even write out what's basically a function to execute, including Declare statements, variables, etc. Is there an advantage to doing it this way when you could do it with just conditions in the sql itself? To me, it seems a lot harder to debug, change and even write vs adding cases, if-elses or additional where parameters to branch the query.

  Possible Duplicate: Is there such a thing as Programmer's block? Has anyone had writers block? Currently, I am trying to get back in to a development role but am struggling to develop any apps. I have a good understanding of VB and OOP. I developed last in the first version of .net studio and also foxpro 9. At the moment I have tried building a customer order app, the form and database have been straight forward but I'm struggling with the nuts and bolts of the application. Should it be a Web or Windows application? Should I use classes/modules? All advice is welcome.

• is box-shadow (CSS3) really not ready to use? (according to "CAN I USE")

  I have a problem that I want you to help me, I am currently making a website, I am building that website on HTML5 and CSS3 technology, every feature I'd like to use I check it first in "CAN I USE", the technology I use most is box-shadow, and I already made some great things with it but, I have a doubt about the percentage of browser that don't support that technology, the percentage of browser that do not support box-shadow is around 17.12%, and if you see the conclusions (show options = other options = show conclusions) they say that that feature isn't ready yet because they are "Waiting for Opera Mini 5.0-6.0 to expire", I personally think that the best that we can do in order to make people update their browsers is not support older browser, but ... am I right thinking like this? will I have bad consecuences if I don't support older browsers? is worth to work twice just to support older browsers? should I still working with box-shadow?

• Terminator Skull Crafted from Dollar Store Parts [Video]

  Earlier this year we shared an Iron Man prop build made from Dollar Store parts. The same Dollar Store tinker is at it again, this time building a Terminator endoskull. James Bruton has a sort of mad tinker knack for finding odds and ends at the Dollar Store and mashing them together into novel creations. So, I'm looking for a good book, tutorial or websites where I can continue to read about this. Currently, what I know and what I do is: to design relational database(3NF), make separate class for each table put that in MVC implement modular programming ...write code and hope for the best... I presume that next things I need to learn more deeply are: programming codex(naming, commenting, conventions...), organize functions building interfaces organizing custom made libraries, organizing API that I'm using, documenting, team work... ... • PHP city-sim castle layout

  I am currently contemplating the layout system for my php based game but i've run into a couple of worries. So my idea is a 9X9 grid where the center 3X3 are inner castle. The inner castle will be 6X6 if you enter it(click on it). and with the option to expand the inner castle converting one of the 9X9 tiles to a 4X4 inner castle tile. So here is my question: What is the best way to tackle this type of layout? my original idea was a 18X18 grid and saving it in the db as (idCastle, Y, X) where X is a string of 18 numbers long telling me if the tile is an inner/outer tile or a inner/outer building. but i am not really fond of this idea and would like to hear some other ideas on how to tackle this. • Pokemon Yellow wrap transitions

  So I've been trying to make a pretty accurate clone of the good old Pokemon Yellow for quite some time now and one puzzling but nonetheless subtle mechanic has puzzled me. As you can see in the uploaded image there is a certain colour manipulation done in two stages after entering a wrap to another game location (such as stairs or entering a building). One easy (and sloppy) way of achieving this and the one I have been using so far is to make three copies of each image rendered on the screen all of them with their colours adjusted accordingly to match each stage of the transition. Of course after a while this becomes tremendously time consuming. So my question is does anyone know any better way of achieving this colour manipulation effect using java? Thanks in advance, Alex

  From what I understand Weebly uses the drag and drop interface and even when looking at the code, it doesn't show the full content, but rather shows {content} which is where the drag and drop parts of the content are put. Does their drag and drop content, such as text have the same effect as a <p> or <h1> tag would on a website? Is the weebly drag and drop less optimized for SEO? Does using Weebly have an adverse affect on SEO compared with building from scratch if I do include keywords, alternate text etc...?

The system "thinks" via its simulator, building and adapting code on its own; and then carries out the best solution.   Hello. I'd like to build a web service similar to kickstarter that allows users to pledge money to an idea, tho I'm unsure how I can implement this kind of payment system. If the the idea receives a specified amount of money, then the donors are charged. If it doesn't, the donors are not charged. I've done some preliminary research and have found Amazon Payments to be a possible solution provider for this, but I'm still unsure where to start with this and was hoping someone could point me in some right directions for how I can go about implementing this kind of payment structure in my web site. I should also note that this is primarily a prototype I'm building, so it's ok if the solution is limited to U.S. customers only. Also, I plan to build the site using Ruby on Rails. • How essential is it to make a service layer?

  I started building an app in 3 layers (DAL, BL, UI) [it mainly handles CRM, some sales reports and inventory]. A colleague told me that I must move to service layer pattern, that developers came to service pattern from their experience and it is the better approach to design most applications. He said it would be much easier to maintain the application in the future that way. Personally, I get the feeling that it's just making things more complex and I couldn't see much of a benefit from it that would justify that. This app does have an additional small partial ui that uses some (but only few) of the desktop application functions so I did find myself duplicating some code (but not much). Just because of some code duplication I wouldn't convert it to be service oriented, but he said I should use it anyway because in general it's a very good architecture, why programmers are so in love with services?? I tried to google on it but I'm still confused and can't decide what to do.

  I plan on building a gallery/exhibition event site. so Locations are usually always the same an fall into 3 categorys (gallery, offspace, institution). then there is the Exhibition title the date and the participating artists. So I was wondering if Wordpress could handle such a site. it should be very data driving though, so all the information is in a list view on one site and can be ordered and queryed (which artists took part in which exhibitions and so on) Please tell me the cons and pros of using Wordpress for such a site and problems I could run into if I might plan to broaden the scope later on. thanks!

• Usefulness of the Backlinks shown in Webmaster Tools

  Is the list of links for a site shown in Google Webmaster Tools a complete list or just a sample? I've noticed that the links in there appear to be all the ones I didn't think would have any real value - either because they were nofollow or from irrelivant sites. The few I did think would be some use have never shown up and there's also some links that are sometimes there and sometimes not (such as my linkedIn profile). Does this mean that the missing links don't/no longer carry any value? It almost appears that the list is there for Google to either inform you about problems (there was a useful list there when someone tried to SPAM my site) or mis-imform you about which link-building strategies work or not (to keep people guessing about what works or not).

• Algorithms for rainfall + river creation in procedurally generated terrain

  I've recently become fascinated by the things that can be done with procedurally terrain and have started experimenting with world building a bit. I'd like to be able to make worlds something like Dwarf fortress with biomes created from meshing together various maps. So first step has been done. Using the diamond-square algorithm I've created some nice hieghtmaps. Next step is I would like to add some water features and have them somewhat realistically generated with rainfall. I've read about a few different approaches such as starting at the high points of the map, and "stepping" down to the lowest neighboring point, pooling/eroding as it works its way down to sea level. Are there any documented algorithms with this or are they more off the cuff? Would love any advice/thoughts.

• Java EE 6 and Maven 3 using CLI

  NetBeans and Eclipse provide tools, templates, wizards and code generators for building a Java EE 6 application. They both also allow a Java EE 6 Maven project to be created. In his recent screencast, Adam Bien explained how a Java EE 6 project can be easily created at command-line using Maven 3. The screencast walks through the process of creating the project using command-line. The created project has no dependency on NetBeans and GlassFish but can still be opened in NetBeans and deployed on GlassFish. A complete list of Adam's screencasts are available here.
