• Socialengine installation error

  I'm trying to install Socialengine (clean install, empty database, legal license key), but I ran into this error message at Step 3 of the installation: Step 3: Setup MySQL Database Mysqli statement execute error : Prepared statement needs to be re-prepared I found a troubleshooting artice about "Bug in MySQLi Extension Causes Apache 500 Error" at http://www.socialengine.net/blog/article?id=161&article=Bug-in-MySQLi-Extension-Causes-Apache-500-Error I uploaded the fixed file and try to install again, but it still doesn't work. It terminates at Step 3 again with the same error message. I would be very grateful if you could help me. Thanks.

  I am hosting collection of videos, for which I retain the copyright, on a file server that I'd like to share with family and friends. When a user visits the my fileserver via a web browser they are asked to authenticate using HTTP auth and then they are presented with a basic list of the files. I'd like to build web application that provides a clean interface with simply library functionality. However, this app will be hosted on a different server. I'm trying to figure out a security model for my file server that doesn't require the user to login to both the file-server and the hosting-server. I want to make this as easy as possible for my non-tech savy family while still maintaining security for my files.

• How can I upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10 to 11.10?

  We need to program in CUDA 5.0 which can be installed only on ubuntu 11.10 or 12.04. Our current version, 9.10, is no longer supported, so we chose to proceed with a clean installation. Since we have a shared workstation, we used clonezilla for cloning the system. However, booting from the LiveCD showed an unexpected error. We also tried to install 11.10 in an external HDD by partitioning it, but Gparted could not be installed, and terminated with the error "installArchives() failed" which we couldn't solve even after modifying the sources.list. Is there a way to proceed with this upgrade?

• How to batch remove spamming users and pages they created on MediaWiki?

  I'm trying to clean up a MediaWiki instance which has been subjected to spamming and vandalism for a period of time. The current status is that there are a large number of users which only created spam pages but typically not altered legitimate pages. And there is only < 10 users which I know are legitimate users and created a small number of legitimate pages. Abstractly, my idea of fixing the messy situation is to find the complete list of users that are not in that small set of legitimate users, and use RenameUser extension to rename them all to a Spammer user, and use Nuke extension to mass delete all pages it created. Any practical advice on how to proceed? Since there are hundreds of spammer users, how do I effectively rename them? It seems Renameuser extension does not support automated batch renaming of users by allowing users to be renamed with a list or file.

• Is it possible to use Back in Time with Ubuntu One without storing the back up files locally?

  I use Deja Dup as my back up tool. Love its simplicity and the fact that I can store my back up directly on my Ubuntu One account. Now I really like the flexibility of Back in Time, but I can not find a clean way to store my back up in Ubuntu One. Some threads suggest to use the Ubuntu One folder in your system, and that works, but it also keeps a local copy of the back up in my system, and I do not want that. Any work around for this? • Installed 12.04 from CD problems with compiz-core - wont continue - just

  Installed 12.04 from CD to clean hard drive but on first boot up says problems with compiz-core. Clicked continue with it not installed. After I sent info for help; it came back with some packages are not up to date. Said I need to update compiz-core and libylib2.0-0 Cancelled the process to send info (after second time) but it wont cancel and it wont load the desktop. What do I do now? Right click will let me create a new folder/document or organise desktop by name etc but I cannot see the usual system bar or left menu items. Is there a way to load the terminal and reload the desktop. If this was windows I'd use cntrl alt delete and run explorer to fix the desktop.

• Why does Chrome crash on websites using the Awesome font?

  Since github using webfront for icons, every time I open github website that tab will crash. But other websites are not crash. I did everything I can, like disable all extensions, clean all cache, even create a new user profile, still not working. I'm using Ubuntu linux 12.04, last stable google chrome browser, always up to date. I searched from google and not found any one has the issue like mine. And I found any website using Font-Awesome my chrome tab will crash if I open that website.

• Is it ok to run with unknown video device?

  I'm new to linux and just starting to learn. From what I've read and experimented with there's no more support for older ati mobility cards. I resolved a few boot issues with my first install of Ubuntu 12.10(now on clean install #3) and my system seems to function ok with video unknown. Picture quality is good and no issues with video playback. It functions for my purposes. Should I leave it as is......or will this cause problems I'm not aware of? Thanks

• System checks for disk drive error every time it boots

  When my disk space for the ubuntu installation partition was getting low, from a live cd, I used gparted to increase its volume capacity, but deleting another partition and merging it to the ubuntu partition. Since then onwards, I am receiving disk checking for errors at boot screen for my partitions, always. What seem to be causing this and how to fix it?   I'm looking for an SMS gateway that has the following criteria: Supports sending from short codes Opt-in capabilities for end-user (will require user to opt in before sending message) Has a clean API, preferably an XML/ REST API, although SOAP is fine The cheaper the better Honestly, I keep searching and searching all permutations of "SMS Gateway API" etc... on Google and I can't find any great services that can support all of these criteria. There are a lot of really SEO optimized sites and I can't tell which of them are legit. I'm looking for something that will be easy and quick to implement, and none of my colleagues have any recommendations. What APIs have you used (preferably with PHP) that have gotten this job done?   First of all I'm 26 and I'm asking this question because I want to see how do you manage your time. Also I'm interested how do the programmers with a family(wife, several kids) manage their time. I'm asking this due the fact that I'm working aprox 7,5 hours at work (9 to 5), spent 1,5 hours on the way to/from workplace, and when I'm home I must cook/clean/etc and LEARN! And I have the impression that I don't have enough time to learn. Did you have a period similar in your life? To want to learn another language/improve your development/other skills? I saw here and on SO that there are a lot of peoples with +10k points, this in my mind means that they stay on blogs/forums more than 15 hours a day. Actually, since I now work with a big company writing high-scalable web applications, I think I need to be better with details. I have no understanding of what happens underneath of Java.   I'm running on a clean install of 10.10 Server edition and have alsa-base, alsa-tools, alsa-utils, alsaplayer, and alsa-firmware-loader installed. At one point I installed pulseaudio, but I have since removed it. • How can I redirect any kind of access to my site to somewhere else, except for me?

  My site, www.example.com has a MyBB forum installation, and has many users constantly checking it out. I would like to make a major change to it - basically, I want to delete everything it has and start clean. However, this rebuilding process may take me hours since I need to do a lot of things. Thus, whenever an user tries to enter any part of my site (www.example.com, www.example.com/blog etc), the user will always be redirected to www.example.com/underconstruction so they can see a nice HTML site explaining the current situation. But not only that - while I am configuring my site, I need to visit it myself to make sure things do work live. So basically, it has to redirect everyone who isn't me. Is that possible in any way? I am using GoDaddy hosting.

• How can I tell what error grub has when I can't read what it's saying?

  Grub won't allow me to get into any systems on my HP dv7 (it runs 12.10). As the screen is broken, I can't read what the error is. Nothing works, not even the recovery mode. It gives me some error about "cannot find" (I think) and Press any (I guess key?) When a press a key I'm dropped back to the menu. At the moment I'm trying all the recovery options I know. However, it would be great if someone could tell me how to know what error grub is facing from a live cd or something (maybe a log file or something could help)? NB: I can view the filesystem from a liveCD, and I did check the filesystem - it was clean.

  I'm planning to upgrade from Maverick to Natty, and to try out Unity, but I don't want to lose any settings, customizations and downloads in Maverick. I just want to know, if upgrading alter anything that I said earlier? I don't want to start over with a clean, fresh Natty, and I hope I can keep all of my files and folders and settings in Maverick, and to have them in Natty after the upgrade. Is this possible? Should I use Update Manager to achieve this? And would all my compiz-settings be reset after I upgrade? Sorry for too much questions, but I'm asking this because you know, in Windows, any version upgrade would require the disk to be reformatted. I hope Ubuntu is more convenient than that.

• How to configure kubuntu for lightweight low-memory usage?

  I just upgraded an old, secondary computer to the latest Kubuntu (10.10). It seems the effort was a bit too much for the hardware and one 512MB memory module died. I tried to take it away, clean the connectors, put it back several times, but to no avail. Until such a time I can find a second hand DDR memory module, I am left with a meagre 256MB RAM, which is below the official requirements (384MB) to run Kubuntu/KDE. Indeed: the computer constantly swaps the memory, making everything painfully slow. Since Kubuntu is already installed and I use it on all my computers (and I want to keep KDE for when I really need it), how can I configure Kubuntu to squeeze out every bit of unnecessary memory usage? This is a secondary computer but still very useful. We use it mostly for web browsing. A "lightweight" tag is missing.

  I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on one of my systems and I am using Unity interface. Unity is working quite nice so far but i really miss panel applets for net speed, cpu temp, and system monitor. These applets show useful quickinfo. Unlike 10.10, there is no other way to get these infos onto the panel or unity launcher. There are solutions like screenlets and conky but they don't feel appropriate for a clean desktop look. If you know then please list out any third party indicators with links so that they can be found at one place.

I bought Word Cleaner but the results are merely sufficient and I need go over all the generated html files to clean tons of useless injected tags like <strongH</strong<strongell</strong<strongo </strong<emWor</em<emld</em Most of the articles displayed on a website I manage are based on documents written on MS Word by people how has little idea of what are margins for or ordered/unordered lists, foot/end notes etc and I cannot make them use something else. Does anyone has a tip to help me handle those pages more efficiently than going over them to correct and apply my CSS style ? NB: Just for the record, using "Save as HTML DOC" in Word is faaar worst than Word cleaner
